Those carving disks are interesting, and certainly a decent option for places that don't have a lathe. That being said, you need to try making a bowl with a bowl adze, carpenter's hatchet and cabinet scraper sometime. A friend of mine who used to do living history demonstrations at frontier museums and the like made some gorgeous bowls with those three tools. Kinda peaceful and satisfying.
Edit: UA-cam has been punishing longer format content creators by shoving the short format stuff down our throats in order to compete with TikTok. We appreciate you, Mr. Humphrey. Upload whenever you want, I for one, will be sticking around.
Thank you Pete! I've actually done just that in the past. I've got a very nice adze and a great collection of high quality carving chisels. Fun and challenging for sure. I love me some power tools too though, lol!
I really don't care for the shorts, personally. I want something substantial to sink my teeth into. I will also be sticking around and will gladly enjoy your videos.
The disk went through that wood like a hot knife through butter. Great rustic bowl. Good to see you back again, Rod. You've been missed.
Thank you, Jill, I appreciate that!
😉👍 Nice project Rod, CARVING DISK
Thank you!
Nice to see you back sir hopefully all is well with you and your loved ones
Thank you, Len! Yes, and I hope the same to you and yours
Those carving disks sure make quick work of that log! Can they be easily cleaned? Glad to see you back! You can’t keep a good Marine down
Awesome work
Thank you! I cleaned them up with a wire brush. The wood was a bit green so the burs filled up, but I only cleaned them once, after I was done.
Good to see you back Rod you have done a great job again. Russell
Thank you, my friend!
Glad to have you back. Semper Fi.
Thanks, brother!
Carving Disks is something I’m going to have to try. That looks really cool!
Pretty fun process. I'll be trying them in some other carving projects too. Thanks!
This is just the way I would have to do it, I am encouraged that I now think I could, thanks for that. Love those old bowls and am thinking I might get some smaller planters for herbs and a few flowers this way.
Cool project. I thought the carving disks worked well. It's kind of like sculpting. Good job.
Thank you very much!
Looks like a vintage dough bowl. Love it.
Thank you, Bonny!
By the way glad your back have missed you.
Thanks very much! 😊
“carving disks”
Love the videos. Beautiful work.
Semper Fi
Much appreciated!
Great looking bowl. And the ease of how it was made without a lathe was enjoyable to watch. Never a disappointment Rod. Glad you’re back. I’ve missed watching. See ya soon Brother!
Thank you, brother!
Those carving disks (no I'm not entering a competition, I live in Norway) is amazing! But your skill needs to be a factor as well!
I appreciate that! Lovely to hear from Norway!!!
Glad to have you back Rod. Carving disks.
Thank you very much!
Amazing rezult and fascinating process video! Thanks :)
Thanks very much! You make a great and affordable product 😊
I apologize for not noticing this channel as often as I used too. But this is an impressive craftsmanship for a non lathe bowl. Glad your back hope to see more
Great to see you again Rod. Carving discs
thanks, David!
Thanks for sharing that!
You're welcome, Hassan, and thank you!
Welcome back Rod. Interesting project. I made a bowl by that method a few years back and I strongly recommend that it's done outdoors as the shavings are much easier to clean up.
Semper Fi
Hello my friend! Thanks! You're so right, I'm glad I did this one outside, lol...
Welcome back! Full size carving disks are too aggressive for my safety level. I now use the two inch Merlin chain disk and get great results. Takes just a little longer, but I have no fear of adding blood to the project. 😊
They sure can be, Valerie! This set is less aggressive that a few others I've tried, but still can be grabby. Thanks!
Hi Rod. Very cool approach to making a bowl. It is beautiful. Glad to see you back at it. 😊 carving disks 😊
Thank you very much!
Thanks. I wish I had remembered watching this prior to my wife asking me to mimic an oblong bread bowl. I cut the outside shape then proceeded to follow using the same tools, BUT it got away from me a went through the side. Oh well, do and learn. Thanks for your sharing your skills and for your military service.
Nice work, this power carving is new to me. Thank you for sharing.
Glad to see you're back. I've been looking to get into power carving recently, and these carving disks would come in handy!
Carving disks look cool, I have a hickory log that I might try that on. Good to see you back, thanks for all you do and have done.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Carving discs are wonderful to use. I've shaped several different things that are quite useful and rather rustic.
I started carving with angle grinder a few moths ago, generally using a planner disk followed with flap disks before standing. Looks like those carving disks you used are much safer to use and give smoother surface and I would love to have a set.
I did a couple small dough bowls a few years ago. The carving disc I used was smaller and slower. these do great. Very nice bowl.
Thanks, Tammy!
These carving discs seem to be very effective. Thank you for the effort you put into these videos
Thanks very much, Eric! 😊
Whether it's carving disks or a lathe your talent shines through. Good to see you back at.
You're very kind, thank you!
Beautiful bowl Rod I made my mother a cedar bowl with my dremel tool and carving bits and a couple of files, it looked similar to this one but a little smaller! You can make anything if you set your mind to finding a way to get it done!
Nice use of the carving disks. I've been wanting to make a bread bowl for quite some time. Your video has peaked the interest again. Thanks, and Semper Fidelis brother. 'Rah.
Glad it was helpful! Semper Fi, brother!
Carving Discs Rod, it’s good to see you, Friend! So glad you’re back. That bowl is fantastic. I’ve been trying to figure out our to make a bathroom sink out of some redwood I’ve got. You just showed me how! Thanks, Rod. Take gentle care. 🙏🏻❣️
Thank you, my friend! Great! Glad this was helpful. I hope you post pics of that sink, I'll bet it will be a beauty 😊
Glad to see you back! Never really thought about using carving disks...
I'm loving your channel...found it by one of my subscribers who must also love wood. I'm hooked!
Thank you so much!! Welcome! I love the U.P. by the way. I grew up in the northern mitten, south of the bridge, but travelled up there often for camping and adventures. It's a whole different place, full of so much beauty!
Good afternoon, Rod.
It's good to be a part of your day again. No lathe, no problem. Love it. You made a really cool bowl without a lathe. I did check out the "carving disks" and they are very reasonably priced. Definitely something I plan on trying soon. Thanks for the video lesson.
God bless
Great to have you here my friend! Thanks for sticking with me!

Great to see you back sir ! I have missed your videos I have contemplating the carving disks for some time thank you for sharing .
Thanks very much, Melvin! These are a great and less expensive option.
My wife has been asking for a dough bowl, those carving disks would come in handy in making one. Good to see you back, have a good day. Bill
They are a great option. I've made dough bowls with mallet and chisel, and it take a lot longer, lol. Thank you and you as well!
I love to watch you carve, either by hand or with a grinder. Thanks for this. Don't expect you'll be using that carving disc on this fall's pumpkins!!
Thanks very much, Leigh! Wow, that would be messy...might have to do it!
Cool Carving Disks!
Those carving disks seem like a good idea. Glad to see you posting again.
Thanks so much!
Rod I've missed you it's good to have you back I haven't one of your videos for years I will still watch the ones that you post
Thanks for sticking with me, Fred!
Absolutely fantastic job with those carving discs. I don't have a large up here in Alaska but you have definitely given me an idea for a new hobby. Won't completely replace shooting but a bit less expensive in today's society. Welcome back and thank you for yet another fantastic video. Tim
Sorry, I don't have a lathe up here in Alaska...
Thanks very much, Tim! Yes on both accounts... shooting is very expensive in the lower 48 too. Lots of potential in these disks!
An intriguing video Rod, loved it. Good to see you back too, thanks for sharing.
Much appreciated, John!
This is very interesting, Rob. I have a grinder that someone gave me several years ago that I hardly ever use for anything. A set of these carving discs may be just what I need. I can think of several ways they might be used along with the lathe for a variety of projects. Thanks for another great video. May God bless you and yours!
lots of potential for sure! thank you!
Hi Rod, good to see you back, this carving technique is very interesting.
Thank you, David!
That’s really nice my grandma had a big wooden bowl I think it was yellow popular it’s been a long time back in the early 50’s but her dad made it for her when she got married she called it her biscuit bowl she mixed ingredients in it
It was smooth maybe from so much use but it was pretty large like 12x18x4 all he had was just very basic hand tool I think she said he smoothed it with a piece of broken glass
Great video glad to see you back
Thank you for sharing that! Using a broken piece of glass is an interesting idea, a great scraper no doubt.
Super cool with the carving discs. Gives me some great ideas.
Wow, very aggressive carving disks yet they leave a relatively smooth surface. Great job, glad to see you back.
the wood was a bit green which helped, but they aren't as aggressive as the carbide bur disks I have. They'll grab ahold though, lol... Thank you!
Thank you for an amazing and awesome bowl. It just shows us that you can make a bowl without your machine
Really nice, Rod. When I first saw the title, I was thinking you were going to spin the blank on a table saw and raise the blade in increments. Then I thought you were going to plane that split face flat. Instead, you used those carving disks to create something completely different. It's great to see you again. Other creators have been having problems with the UA-cam algorithms too.
Bill
I've seen that done... No interest, lol. I'm glad you enjoyed it, Bill. Yep, YT is providing unnecessary issues to certain folks.
Great looking bowl! Like the rustic look. Well done and take care.
Thanks, you too!
Those carving disks look like a lot of fun to use. I can imagine doing complex and asymmetrical forms with them.
carving disks Nice Job, I have been interested in trying some of those. Thanks for sharing!
Hi Ron, it is nice to see a video of yours. I should get some of those carving discs and put them to good use up here in Northern VT.
Thanks very much!
It looks like the dough bowl my great grand mother kept in a drawer with flour in it for making biscuits. Brings back memories. The "craving disc" did a great job hogging the wood out, but it still takes an artist to create a beautiful bowl like that. Thanks Rod.
Jean, the comment picker will not match "craving disks". Needs to be carving disks.
Carving disks
Thanks for sharing, Jean, and for your kind words!
Looks like you had fun with those carving disks. Very nice rustic bowl.
Thanks 👍
I like it... that's the kind of things I make... thanks for sharing and God bless
Greatings Rod. Great to catch up with you. Nice bowl!! I have a set of disks already, you make it look like childs play. Cheers! & Blessings! Lana
Thanks very much, Lana, same to you! 😊
So happy to see a new video from you ❤ thanks for the heads up and May you have peace in making the best choices for your life. 😊
Darlou, you have no idea how much I appreciate that!! Thank you!
@@RHumphrey God Bless You 🙏
good to see you back. carving disks - never thought about using those to make a bowl
Thank you! Food for thought!
Carving disks are great!! I've seen live edge cleaning videos using them.
Those carving disks work well. I want to try carving this way for sure. I’m working on chainsaw carvings as well. Thank you for sharing.
I'm doing more chainsaw carving too, videos coming soon! Thanks!
I have wanted to try carving discs but never tried one yet. Looks fun!
Pretty fun!
Welcome back! Them carving discs are aggressive and slick. That bowl looks like it would make for a great Planter. Say for on a porch.
Also need to tell you, when ripping a log in half. Better to cut with the grain than down thru it. You will find it to be much more chain saw friendly. Instead of throwing dust, you will throw shreds and get thru it much faster. A lot easier on the chain, bar, and you, you will notice!
Thanks very much! You're right about that. The problem is that the battery powered chainsaw I was using clogs too easy and often with the shreds. If I was using a gas powered I'd have gone that route. Good info to share though, thanks, my friend!
Very good to see you working something again. Missed your voice and good cheer. As others said below, this does look like a good rustic bead dough bowl. If MY cat got close to it, it would become her napping bowl 😉 A bowl for a cat loaf for both definitions of the word!
Not bad for your first one...I will have to give that a try.
Thanks! It's pretty fun
I learned something new today. Carving discs look interesting. I have seen the ones that have chainsaw looking teeth. I have yet to try one.
Neat bowl Rod. Those carving disks sure make for quick removal of stock. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome, and thank you, Craig!
I have been looking at carving disks lately but most seem to be such a small diameter. Thanks for showing this one
You're welcome, Tim, and thank you!
Great work Rod and from the mess on the floor I understand why you did this outdoors.
Take care my friend and I'll be here whenever you post a video.
Cheers, Huw
Thank you, my friend, I appreciate that!
I would love to have those carving disks. You say they are inexpensive. Of course if I do get them I will have to buy an angle grinder. That will drive the cost up a bit. 😄Excellent demo Rod. I like the rustic works. Makes us remember how things were done in the past. Even though in the past it was mostly hatchets and knives. I don't care much for the speeded up video though. Makes the process look a bit frantic. Your presence has been missed. Good to see you again. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Hello Glen, I appreciate that. I've done similar bowls with a mallet and chisel... but I do enjoy my power tools, lol. I know you aren't a fan of the sped-up videos and I apologize, but it'll continue to be my format due to extreme video lengths otherwise. I've experimented with formats in the past and a mix seems to be what the majority of my viewers like. I very much appreciate your feedback though, it has value, my friend.
This was so interesting. Those discs are amazing .....so are you and Edgar.
You're very kind, thank you!
love the use of the carving discs. great job
Those carving disks are amazing! Great job.
Carving disks hey rod it was nice to have had a few nice days here in Indiana so you could get outside and make a mess and not make a disaster in your shop. I was able to get some things done with the garage door open it was nice.
Great work as always. Keep on keeping on !!
Thanks very much! Yes, it was nice... hit and miss lately, as is the norm in our neck of the woods! I have something for you next time I see you.
@@RHumphrey that's great just let me know when I'm usually available 😀
Cool idea. I've been wanting to get some carving disks
A friend wants me to make her a dough bowl. These carving discs would be the perfect solution. . Another great looking bowl Rod
Nice! Have fun with that and send me a pic! Thank you
Hi Rod, it's long time !! Nice to see you again... I bought that carving set (flat and bumped disc and the carving ball) and still didn't try it... That's amazing how good it makes the job ! Great demo, thanks a lot... Take care yourself, mate :)
Thank you, my friend!
Great job Rod. I love the graffiti carving disc. I want to make a long bread dish… these would help a lot. Thanks for all you do… all you’ve done for us.
Thank you, Martin, I appreciate that very much.
Nice work! Looks like I need to add carving disks to my things to try list.
Thank you, Joe!
The carving discs seem to work very well and eat through the wood quickly. I would love to try out a set.
Amazing talent Top, there's really a lot can be done with "carving disk" sure missed your videos glad you're back
Thank you, Gordon! You're so right, huge potential!
Carving disks… I would like to try a set of those, I know someone who’d love to have a rustic dough bowl like that! Enjoy your videos, good job, thanks for sharing… keep ‘‘em coming!
Thanks very much!
It looks that they do a good job! Of course you know how to use them.
Thanks so much!
@@RHumphrey I learned a lot of techniques from your wideos!
Those carving disks are awesome!! Would love to have a set. Thank you!
You're welcome, and thank you!
Those carving disks would be really handy for cleaning up blanks so they would spin on my 12" lathe. nice video. thanks for sharing.
good idea! Thanks, and you're very welcome!
The carbing disc work pretty good
Those carving disks are pretty cool. It looks like they can chew through wood very easily. It reminds me of back when I used to grind boat hulls, without having to deal with fiberglass dust lol
Sounds like a dirty enough job for Mike Rowe, lol!
Those carving disks look like a great way to save time. Have a great day.
They are, and a fun way to spend time too! 😊
Nicely done! Those carving disks do a super job! 😎❤👍
Thanks for the carving disks video! Hopefully everything gets squared away and we can see videos on the regular again!
I hope so too! Thank you!
Loved how well the carving disks worked.
I missed this video, but then again I have been preoccupied with other things. Great looking bowl!
I like that you didn't do too much after using the carving disks. I love that look of it that way.
I do like some tool marks and divots now and then. Lots of character. Thank you!
¡Hola! Rod,
Great to see another video from you. And this one proves my assertion that you are an artist par excellence! Company X sends you some samples of their product. Not having seen them before, you simply get out your chainsaw and a chunk of wood, make a blank then proceed to carve a very credible giant bowl 🧐 using tools that you might be familiar with but have probably never used. Nor actually thought about using until they arrived on your doorstep.
A most excellent piece of work.
Keep the aspidistra flying!
Semper Fi.
God bless,
Paul
Hello Paul! You're too kind, but I appreciate it very much!
Great looking rustic bowl! The carving disks certainly do a nice job of removing matrial. I have one of those "chainsaw" carving disks for a grinder, but I've heard a few safety-related stories about them that make me think.
I have seen the aftermath pictures and videos of those chainsaw disks. They need to be banned.
I've used one of those... very sketchy and super aggressive. These are on the lower side of aggressive but can still be grabby in a much less dangerous way.
