Beautiful! My sister just cut down an old walnut tree and it made me cry. This tree was here since I can remember. So I took two logs and want to carve a bowl out of that. I have never done any carving. Your video is very inspiring! Thank you.
You have got me wanting to have a go at trying something similar with what carving tools I have is the one hooked axe you use called something like a dais axe Thanks Jamie
@@jamiemitchell5132 the one that looks like a gauge - axe combination is called an adze. I have a few from Jason Lonon, if you google him he sells tools online :)
Well done!! I’m Planning on trying a bowl really soon. I struggle big time with symmetry and I’m always impressed when I see someone carve a perfectly symmetrical object 😂
Beautiful work. I’m curious, it appears that between sessions the wood darkens because each new generation of refining reveals lighter wood. Does the wood darken naturally or do you apply an oil or water between sessions? Thanks and keep up the brilliant work!
Absolutely beautiful. Is there a reason why you split the log in half first. Is it not possible to make the same thing with the rings of the log spreading out from the centre of the log as though you started carving out straight into the centre of the log?
Hi Adam, you can orient the log the opposite way (bark side up) and get a different shape and ring pattern. If you look at my videos there is a multi part series and the first video I talk about the orientation of the log. Thanks for watching!
was the wood green when you started? and if yes, how do you prevent cracks? I wanted to carve a water bowl for my dog, so far all have cracked WHILE I was still carving
Sorry to hear it! Yes, wood was green when started. If you’re interested I made a whole series on this you can find in my channel. I discuss drying and crack prevention there. Good luck!
Thank you Maxime! This is wood from an ornamental pear tree. They are invasive here in Ohio, USA. It is very dense wood that has an orange-pink hue. This bowl took me about 15-16 hours in total.
Good question! My favorite is Tung Oil from the real milk paint company but there are many good options. I did a video about it here: ua-cam.com/video/XT91IOwpUQ8/v-deo.html
The one most people ask about is called an "adze" which functions like a gouge on an axe handle. The others are carving axes, curved gouges, spokeshave etc. If you look up "Jason Lonon Toolmaker" he makes some of the instruments I use
Go to the UA-cam website men with the pot and look at their gorgeous wooden utensils... And of course their other stellar content! I'm doing vice versa recommendation too.

Thank you! This type of wood (Callery (Bradford) Pear) naturally oxidizes quite quickly, I didn't add anything to the wood.

I was always curious how you sharpened that curvy tool ... nice vid!
Thank you! 😊
Skills!!!!👍
Thank you! =)
I wonder when u hit so many times the wood it doesn t get damaged?
What is that big gouge that you used at about 6:48? Where did you get it?
That is a Pfeil Swiss made 50mm full size gouge, I believe it is a #5 sweep
@@TheGardenFamily thanks.
@@TheGardenFamily I want to get back into carving again. Nice tool, but pricey.
Bravo.
Thanks! ☺️
Who knew that bowl was hiding inside that log.
Always exciting to see what the wood gives you! I was very happy with this pear log

Hi Daniel. This is Bradford or Callery pear. It’s an ornamental pear tree that is now invasive in the state of Ohio where I’m from
