I listened to the Jay's Instagram Live and this shoot was totally pulled together last minute. The girls are wearing kimonos from the hotel! They all did a good job considering this was cobbled together.

The girls were detained in customs so production was delayed - the original set was torn down and Jay had pretty much no money and no time to do this set. The robes are from the hotel and there is no lighting on set at all. They filmed these videos and went right to judging. This probably also explains why the translator is not great - they probably got her last minute.
I think it would have helped a lot if they had someone say the lines a few times so they knew what it was supposed to sound like. Also they needed a better interpreter
yeah. Plus, they probably did not use proper IPA transcription since most Americans do not know it, unless they study languages... so they had Japanese transcribed in English... most people have problems with that.
All the people on the comments throwing shit to them because of their pronunciation.... Hunny, not everyone watches anime, and they never spoke the language before.. they are trying but speaking a language for the very best time and on a commercial, is really hard. You wouldn't speak another language good for the first time and with all that pressure.
