How to make a Lighted Memorial Glass Block (2017)

  • A couple weeks ago I did a tutorial on how to make a Glass Block Nightlight. My darling sister saw it and really liked it. Just after that, I did a tutorial on how to put a Silhouette on Canvas. Again my darling sister saw it and liked it. So a few days later she sends me a text with a photo and asks if I can make the photo into a silhouette for her, but she needs it to fit one of the glass blocks that I used for the nightlight. Is this girl not creative! Pure inspiration!
    They were adorable! She runs a small daycare and she had taken photos of the children and put the silhouettes on the blocks as gifts to the parents. The perfect gifts and the parents loved them.
    So, with her inspiration, I decided to do a few of my own, but I added a small twist to mine. I knew I wanted to do something very special for my two boys. It has been a rough and almost overwhelmingly busy past couple months for both of them. I wanted something from the heart.
    This is not a typical cheap, easy or fast craft. This one takes money, work and time. It will result in a true from the Heart Gift and a long lasting memory. Very much worth it.
    Things you will need...
    1 - 8x8x3 Glass Block
    Extra Fine Glitter - White or Light Color
    Polycrylic
    2 - 8x8 pieces of Black Vinyl
    Transfer Tape
    LED Micro Lights - Battery Powered (with timer)
    Photo change to black and white silhouette
    Favorite Poem
    Cutting Machine to cut photo and poem - Cricut, Silhouette
    I know this tutorial won't be for everyone, but it might spark that bit of inspiration and imagination, so you too can come up with that perfect gift.
    Enjoy!

    I liked it. And I didn't mind hearing about your family. For some reason I thought you were going to be etching this. But I like the black for a memorial. I made similar memorial things on large floor tiles from Lowe's that cost like a dollar. Do the black lettering and the quote and I have this picture of a feather turning into birds and then I put a picture frame on it to put the person's picture. But I digress... I only mentioned it because I was going to say that's been my go-to memorial thing, but now I think I'll do a few of these! Very nice.

      Bonna Kelley also, what size would you recommend if I want to make the pic a little smaller?

      @BonnaKelley  6 років тому +1

      The block I used is 7 1/2 x 7 1/2 I made my picture 7 in square. I would say give yourself no less than a 1/4 inch boarder and 1/2 would probably be best

      Sadly I have not been able to find one that will do it for free anymore, sorry. I do mine using Photo Shop and I have seen several tutorial on YT on how to do it with just about every graphics program around. I hope this helps.

    Love this video very inspirational and I tried and having difficulties with the glitter drying. How long does it take because when I go to put the lights in, it’s scratching the glitter off? Can I put a second coat of polycrylic on top of the first layer of glitter?

    Oh ok.Does it matter what kinda vinyl u use or do u need a certain type of printer

    • @BonnaKelley
      @BonnaKelley  6 років тому

      The Vinyl isn't printed, it is cut on my Cricut Machine. The Cricut is a vinyl cutting machine. IF you do not have a cutting machine, yes you can print your saying and names out and cut them by hand. I would use a light card stock and a clear drying glue.

    I truly live this idea, My husband passed away this pass July.. What a nice way to remember him by.. I'm always doing something for every holiday... Sadly, I don't have a cutting machine..:( really wanted to try this.. Is there any other way of doing that part?

    • @BonnaKelley
      @BonnaKelley  6 років тому +1

      Yes, you could use printable vinyl or sticky paper. Anything you can print your image on. Then cut out the pieces using an X-acto knife or small cutting scissors.

    I have a silhouette but do you have to weed the photo I lose details like eyes and things

    • @BonnaKelley
      @BonnaKelley  6 років тому

      If you can not get any detail around eyes, which can be very hard to do, you can use an Xacto knife and add some after you have it on the block. I hope this helps.

    I was so excited to see how she made her block but she talked way too much about things that were not paramount to learning this project. I stopped the video five minutes into it. Keep your focus on what you’re teaching not your family and other things.
