  • Fantastic day seeing a great variety of motive power at several locations such as Hohokus, Glen Rock, and Ramsey. Numerous trains are seen powered by the CNJ and NJDOT Heritage GP40PH-2’s. The locomotive cycles for these engines were suddenly changed resulting in them operating on the Main Line. You will hear the lively RS3L and SU3L horns on the 4109 and 4101 respectively plus other sweet sounding K5LA horns on other trains. This was a nice early Christmas present. (At 26:03 that is actually an RS3L. Ignore the SU3L graphic)

    Still like the original blue NJ DOT scheme the best. And I like the brutish looks of the 4500's.

    actually, the ALPs are to replace the PL42s. as i am aware, NJT/MN has absolutely zero plans of retiring the Geeps and F40s.

      @3985uprr  Рік тому +2

      Yes that’s true. They should get rid of those PL’s. Supposedly the DP’s are tremendous fuel guzzlers while the EMD’s are more fuel efficient surprisingly. Go EMD!!!!

    My childhood home was on the top of hill on the other side. We used to watch trains on the other side of the track. Wow theres a crossing gate now! And the signals got moved they used to be several hundred yards north of the crossing. But that was 50 yrs ago

    I lived on Hillcrest Rd. in Ridgewood, NJ (about 1000 feet from Hollywood Av. crossing) from 1966-1976) in the Erie-Lackawanna era. There were 4 tracks back then from Ridgewood Junction to Suffern, NY. Then it was double tracked to Port Jervis, NY on the old (now abandoned) passenger mainline thru the downtowns of Monroe, Goshen and Middletown, NY. Plenty of RS-3s, E8s, GP-7&9s and later U-34s when commuter trains transitioned from E-L to NJDOT about 1974 or so. I think E-L used the old Stilwell commuter coaches up to 1976. Maybe even a little after NJDOT takeover. Not 100% sure when last Stilwell disappeared from roster. I even rode on some of the six passenger coaches that E-L bought from the Santa Fe around 1970 or so. They were long distance coaches so they only had a door at one end and the seats were 2X2 and individual. Comfy and roomy! I think it was an easy (and cheap) purchase by E-L because Santa Fe and E-L long distance passenger trains both used Dearborn station in Chicago before AMTRAK. Lots of freight on that line back then using anything from FA-2s to SDP-45s! The E-L put welded rail on the Waldwick S-curve in the late 60s-early 70s, but only on the curved sections. The tangent track remained jointed rail. BTW. That storage area on Hollywood avenue was a textile bleachery up to the end of the 60s when it was forced to shut down because it was polluting Ho-Ho-Kus Brook! They used to blow their factory air whistle every morning! It was my alarm clock for waking up on school days! I hated that whistle. Also BTW. U r about 1 year older than me. In case u were wondering. I also lived in Mastic Beach, NY for 2 years in the late 1980s when I worked at Grumman in Calverton. The LIRR was using FA-2 control units and GP-40s (I believe) back then on the Montauk line. I only remember switchers on the Greenport line. Great videos! Love your insights!

    I forgot to mention that I listen to the horns differently. I base them on vocal ranges of opera singers. High pitch I call them tenors. Low pitch I call them, baritones. And very deep, I call them bases. I live near the West Shore Line so I can have fun.
