In this video I take you on a brief overview of the third largest commuter rail service in the country, NJ Transit. Operating in a state of over 9 million people, NJ Transit provides an extensive network of 10 commuter lines, allowing people to move throughout the state and to the nearby big cities of Philadelphia and New York City.

You kept saying "Pasack Valley" and even showed it on the screen, but it's Pascack. Anyway, I live along the Atlantic City Line, about 10 miles west of the Parkway. It would be nice if the Coast Line went all the way to Cape May. It could run along the Parkway. That would make it a nice easy trip to NYC by train. Right now I think one would have to take the Atlantic City Line out, and then go up to the Northeast Corridor Line, and go from there. That would be a lot of extra miles, and extra time. So we just drive if we want to go to New York. It would be nice to be able to go to and from anywhere along the coast by train. Thanks for the overview.
A lot of people pronounce it that way. Also, please don't drive into the city. We'd rather you just stayed home than bring your car here.
@@kirkrotger9208 What if we drive in just to park at Port Authority Bus Terminal?
@@davidfrischknecht8261 It'd be a lot cooler if you drove to a train station out in the suburbs.

@@kirkrotger9208there are many many people who love the revenue generated from all the car parks in the city so speak only 4 yourself
The Main Line is a combination of the former Lackawanna Main Line & Erie Main Line. The Erie Main Line ran through Rutherford into downtown Passaic into Paterson. The Lackawanna Main Line ran through Lyndhurst into Passaic Park to Paterson. This changed in the early 1960s with the merger of Erie & Lackawanna and the closure Erie line through downtown Passaic and the closure of the Lackawanna line for the construction of Interstate 80.

Well done and very enjoyable! As an old Jersey Guy now living in Virginia I thank you for the "trip home!"
Very detailed video about one of my favorite railroads! I always love hearing background and history; well done!
Excellent job!!!! It’s The Pascack Valley Line. It travels from Hoboken to Spring Valley, NY. It’s mostly single track when it branches off to the North at The Meadowlands. It is a diesel operated line, and is the least travelled on NJT
dude, the PVL is my local line and it never makes sense to take it during the off-peak or non-peak direction. the trains run so infrequently and move very slowly between stations. in fact according to Google Maps, from my local station (Anderson St.) it is usually faster to just take the bus and subway to PABT or Penn Station. this is not to mention that I live about 2 miles away from the station. The only time I would argue it might be faster is during rush hour in the peak direction because the highways are backed up and the trains run slightly more frequently. my suggestion is that NJT turns it into a bus rapid transit line which would increase ridership, but even this might not be possible due to the width or the right of way.

Those are a lot of stops when taking the New Jersey Transit. : 0
The north jersey coast line should expanded and connect to the Atlantic city line

Great explanation bro are you gonna do septa next
If you live along the rvl Plainfield you can either drive to I-78 Exit 45 Morris & Essex lines Summit or CR-529 Washington Ave Stelton RD to Edison. In the case of Easton, PA exits 17-18 High Bridge/Annandale the drawback of RVL is weekends only to Newark from Raritan they should be doing it from High Bridge when needed. Weekday off peak RVL has NYC Trips. If you compare a Morris & Essex line Electric to the Newark Division electric trains the M&E trains still has room to spare on the longer Newark Division electric lines but run a standard length NEC Newark Division electric trains on Hoboken Division lines electric territory 25kv 60hz since 1984 you will not fit on the platform since they were meant for short length EMUs not the longer length NEC lines
I really thought more of NJT was electrified. realizing that I took that for granted with SEPTA
watching this on the njcl rn
I would love it if you can do one about New Jersey Transit bus operation in newark's Penn station as well as the city's Subway

@@saywhat6250 it's not so your comment is not true we have issues lol just like other agencies but we are not the worst
Unlike many who talk about NJ you did an excellent job of pronouncing our sometimes strange words. But, just to help Pascack which is the name of the branch line is pronounced Pas kak as opposed to Passaic which is Pa sa ic. Lot of dutch and indian (Lenape) imported words. But good job , thank you.
As others pointed out, it's Pascack Valley and also not to be confused with "Passaic"
We need service to Scranton!!!
Njt should get some ACS 64 locomotives and ACL locomotives for the non electrified lines
Shame they could make a branch running from redbank to farmingdale and split there to run down to lakewood/toms river/lakehurst and the other branch could go to brunswick via freehold. The tracks are there and freight and just got a fix up/restoration.
Southern secondary we still exist njt.
There are so many lines still running freight in South Jersey that should be reactivated for commuter service.
I wonder how wild it would be if one of the NYC subway lines gets extended then replaces the old boonton line or via catenary pantographs added 😂 to R188 or 143 stock
Lautenberg was nonen of the worst politicians to ever live. Leave it to Jersey to name stuf after him 😂
They really need to convert the Princeton junction line to a light rail
Do the metro north lines!
What would it take to get all these lines electrified?
You said the ACL's tracks are owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Who owns them now?
NJ Transit itself owns the AC line's tracks as far as the Delair Bridge over the Delaware River. From there until the Northeast Corridor, it's owned by Conrail Shared Assets, and then of course Amtrak owns the NEC to 30th street.
Great explanation video, but I would appreciate it if you asked for my permission or gave credit for using my railfanning clips in your video (The Secaucus Junction ones)
I'm so so sorry for forgetting to do this. Someone sent the video file to me itself so I had no idea who made it. Will give credit to you in the desc and comments. Footage was awesome but I'm deeply sorry for this.
@@DTransit Thank you very much. I’m glad you think my videos are great enough to use as background footage, means alot. But next time if you want to use any of my videos for background footage, please ask me first or at least already give credit. Also I would try to give credit to other channels whose clips you used from. Just to keep you from causing any trouble. I’ve seen some of your other videos and you got potential. But some other people might not be as nice about using their footage without permission as I was
Agggh! Your otherwise excellent review of NJ Transit uses the term "Commuter Rail," which at best is a limited description and, at worst, gives aid and comfort to those opposed to public transportation in New Jersey.
Yes, I know NJ Transit carries "commuters," but it also carries people like me, who use the rails for beaucoup other purposes. Call it a "regional" railroad or maybe even a "statewide" railroad. Calling it a "commuter railroad" is a straight-out pejorative, akin to "MASS transit."
Overreacting? Given 40 years of railroad advocacy in New Jersey, I'd respectfully beg to differ. We tried to get the Pascack Valley Line -- at the time, a truly "commuter" rail service, I'll grant -- double-tracked throughout its New Jersey stretch to provide two-way, seven-day service. One Assemblywoman from Montvale, opposed to any expansion, freely used "commuters" interchangeably with "those people." And that's just one example.
New Jersey Transit serves commuters, fair enough. Commuters still account for the majority of rail riders, also (sadly) a given. But it is not, nor should it aim to be, a "Commuter Railroad." You do public transit an injustice.
Douglas John Bowen
Totally get it! The name of anything can really change what people think of, so I totally understand you. And that's very true that only a portion of people actually use it to commute. Sorry about that one but don't worry, I totally get your frustrations 👍
Best of luck with the advocacy, got involved with advocating for bike infrastructure at my town and county level about 1 year ago and having train more train infrastructure for non-commuting transportation needs would be huge.
A fellow NJ'er
@@DTransit liking this content, idk what your long term plans are with this channel, whether its simply a focus on history/reporting on future plans associated with NJ transit and/or other transit projects but something I think a lot of people are hungry for is tools for getting involved. My personal suggestion would be to try out some videos highlighting either how some transit lines got added in the first place (as in, the political/advocacy side of it), and/or highlighting future plans that need attention in order to gain traction.
Just my 2 cents as someone who has consumed a lot of youtube urbanist content and has now started translating what I've learned about transit into advocacy at the local level.
What's the negative connotation with MASS transit?

“It shows the New Jersey state bird….the mosquito…”
Just kidding. 😂
I think the Atlantic City line should be electrified and the service shifted to Septa. That should make the line more inclusive and boost ridership on the line.
The key part of the line across the Delaware River is owned by Conrail (Norfolk Southern and CSX joint venture). They would never allow electrification.
@@zeroone8800then drop it
why?@@qjtvaddict
@qjtvaddict For what? They did drop it once, and there was so much demand that they brought it back. What are you even talking about?
@@zeroone8800 id say PA and NJ should give NS and CSX no choice in the matter, Either allow it to be electrified or lose it via eminent domain.
