As a Rocker, I was privileged to have a friend turn me on to John Prine in the late 70's. Changed my way of thinking, and to a degree my way of life. The song Souvenirs really hit me hard; the honesty, simplicity, and sadness of the lyrics haunt me to this day. The guitar playing, ( With Steve Goodman) just flows like a gentle stream, seamlessly intertwined with the singing. I've been very fortunate to have seen him live twice, and what I wouldn't do to go back to those times...
better late than never...if you are lucky to live long enough you can listen to all of his songs !! I hope you listen to them all many many times over and over and then again.
The finest music ever made never was played on the radio my friend. Hoyt Axton, Guy Clark and John Prine never graced mainstream radio but there's no singers/songwriters that are finer.
John Prime --- RIP ---April 7, 2020 --- Nashville, TN, age 73 (same as me). We will all miss you and your music, my friend! Thanks for the fine musical ride!!! Smile, and have a "happy enchilada" or three from me!!!
Great and never wrote a bad song. Maybe the most entertaining songwriter. Dylan,Lightfoot, Townes, Hunter to name a few. But those guys , you really had to be willing to listen more than a few times to " get it" I agree no one made me smile and cry at one concert the way JP did. RIP
Don't get me wrong. I love John Prine and I've never heard a bad song written by him. You obviously have like a lot of people quit Dylan at various times of his career. Prine has songs allot better than this. This song reminds me of Dylan's Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. Just messing around . I don't know you but listen to Rough and Rowdy and Tempest. Dylans last few albums. Sam Stone would be a Prine song as well as many others that can set you back in tears. Prine is a super song writer and enjoys talking to his fans. And will hang out and sign auto graphs and bs after a show. Take the time and really listen to what Dylan is saying especially in his last 2 albums. The guy all but pulled the trigger on the recent Trump incident. He sang of pretty much what happened. The Titanic, the same. He's deep tho as is Prine, but no this song is a fun song even to Prine. I grew up with that old saying...to me it has always meant that we had our mom's name tattooed on our arm (as in the old toast that goes, "here's to the happiest days of my life, spent in the arms of another man's wife...my mother).
I’m 65 yrs old why haven’t I heard of John Prine until just a couple months ago ? Now retired I’m sitting around thinking man I gotta have some John Prine !
I was fortunate to grow up outside Chicago where John played his first gig while working as a mail deliverer. He and Steve Goodman wrote songs that described our lives as kids growing up in the midwest US during the Vietnam War and Watergate. They both played in our local bars and on college campuses. He was our touchstone and just as he was being rediscovered, we lost him.
One of the most humble, honest, writers ever. John did it all for the love of life and fun music brings... That is why he is looked up to by soooooo many fellow artists. His talents reach the hearts and soul of folks all over the world.....✌💖🎶
LOVE me some John Prine!!! He ain't afraid to tell it like it is. He is one helluva storyteller! A friend of mine turned me onto his music back in the early ' 80s when we were working at a huge plant nursery. In the winter, we would be working in greenhouses that didn't have heat, just plastic covering the plants, so we would break out our flasks of homemade peach or apple brandy to keep us warm & sing John Prine songs at the top of our lungs!! Thank you, Marla for introducing me to John & thank you, John for the awesome music & good times that have come w/it!!!!
Wow now MR JOHN PRINE he is one of a kind and so glad to have seen him several times And many years of listening to him Growing up in the 70s and 80s Blessed
3 years ago I was at John Prine gig in Vicar St. Dublin with my 18 year old son. On our way home he said "I have seen all the major rock bands that have played here in recent years. They should have been here tonight to learn how to do a gig."

Long live you John from an older Ozark Arkie in 'dem thar hills that has slipped down and over to Nashville and lucky to run into you, but you don't know it, at bars in town on a night out. I discovered him in 1975 or 76. I've listened to a wide variety of music from a young age, and picking an all time favorite was always something I said I couldn't really do, until recently. Not that I ever stopped listening to it for very long, but I've now revisited JP's music at several stages of my life, and I kind of decided recently that I can say he is probably my all time favorite artist. He is absolutely a treasure. Glad you discovered him. My life would not be as rich without his music.
Wonderful songs , from another Son of God with his feet on the ground and His eyes in his head and his Heart out for others . Great Human Being making this thoughtful music for us to enjoy . I love it .

John writes music people can relate to, and makes you feel like it was written for you. Such a cool guy.
Although, I never had a picture of another man's wife tattooed on my arm
Ha! Yea that's pretty ballsy. And stupid.

Crazy as a loon
Back before I was a movie star
Straight off of the farm
I had a picture of another man's wife
Tattooed on my arm
With a pack of Camel cigarettes
In the sleeve of my T-shirt
I'm headin' out to Hollywood
Just to have my feelings hurt
That town will make you crazy
Just give it a little time
You'll be walking 'round in circles
Down at Hollywood and Vine
You'll be waitin' on a phone call
At the wrong end of a broom
Yes, that town'll make you crazy
Crazy as a loon
So, I headed down to Nashville
To become a country star
Every night you'd find me hangin'
At every honky-tonkin' bar
Pretty soon I met a woman
Pretty soon she done me wrong
Pretty soon my life got sadder
Than any country song
That town will make you crazy
Just give it a little time
You'll be walking 'round in circles
Lookin' for that country rhyme
You'll be waitin' on a phone call
At the wrong end of a broom
Yeah, that town'll make you crazy
Crazy as a loon
So, I gathered up my savvy
Bought myself a business suit
I headed up to New York City
Where a man can make some loot
I got hired Monday morning
Downsized that afternoon
Overcome with grief that evening
Now I'm crazy as a loon
So I'm up here in the North Woods
Just staring at a lake
Wondering just exactly how much
They think a man can take
I eat fish to pass the time away
'Neath this blue Canadian moon
This old world has made me crazy
Crazy as a loon
Lord, this world will make you crazy
Crazy as a loon

I first heard him and loved his music in 1971 when I heard Sam Stone. That album was brilliant as was his latest in 2018 and all in between. John wrote that first album of great songs when he was about 23 years old! He is still helping me hold on to my sanity.
Saw him in Galway a few weeks ago. As good as ever.Looking forward to seeing another genius, Chris Smither, in 2 weeks time.
Got to see John at the Palms in October, 2015 with Kris Kristofferson. Great show.
I was Singing this this morning. Thought I'd Share. I thought I had it all together. Lost it by noon. Tryed to pick it up again. You guessed it. " Crazy As A Loon". I kinda like it. And don't act like you Ain't.
