To me John Prine is one of a kind . One of the best song writers to walk this earth . Not much of a country music person . John Prine and Blaze Foley are pretty much it for me. 2 of the best both gone . The world will never replace thier talents .
I could listen all day to John Prine and wonder why he isn’t right up there with Bob Dylan? I’m 75, but had never heard of him until we lost him to Covid.
Dylan said Mr Prine was a better composer than he was..Roger Waters also considers him one of the greatest songwriters..is amazing what an ex-mailman can produce; truly one of kind bird...so painful to know he is gone....
One of my all time favorites, and listening to people laughing sounded like another nail in our collective hearts. John shoulda been a Wilbury seein how he's every bit song writer the other five guys were.
So sorry for your loss. I can't imagine the pain you must still go through. But I can imagine John being there for and consoling you every step of the way.
Someone on facebook posted a survey: favorite john prine lyric of all time! Mine was “these are the champagne of bottled tears” ! But there are so many! I miss him so much! There are always a few tears though when I listen to his music even though I wont always admit it!

Natural Human Instinct It's actually a nervous response when people dont know how to respond. Or alot of folk songs get started with artists giving a little back story to the song and a good bit of them are funny also a fair amount aren't true also this was a new song and they most likely didn't think it was a true life event. Saw him Nov 2019 in Tampa. Tremendous concert, I love this guy! "For a heart stained in anger grows weak and grows bitter. You become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there, wrapped up in a trap ... of your very own chain of sorrow"
I have been a John fan since about 1975, wore this album out! Like most of his dedicated following, spent many hours re-visiting his catalogue around the time of his passing and missed this sad poignant tune. Have not heard it for years. Thank you for posting, gonna play it again 💙
Mr. Prine. It's always a pleasure, Sir, to run across your music. I can never state strongly enough to suit myself what a unique personality you are. I don't know whether your music brings you to life, or life brought the music to you.
Amazing that the basis for the song was an event that happened when he was 14. I wonder if he wrote the song then or years later. Either way it shows what a great songwriter he is, since he paints pictures or sings a film of real events in life.
What an amazing line! The laughing was infuriating....perhaps the crowd was uncomfortable with a serious song. Still, "I'll never forget the looks on those other women's faces."
I recorded this when it was broadcast by holding the mike of one of those old-fashioned mono cassette recorders near the TV speakers. Listened to it for years. Strange to come across it again.
When I was an altar boy, I used to take a shortcut at 7 in the morning through the railroad yards to get to church. By myself, past all the bums and everything. Freight trains all over the place. Also rain, snow, whatever.
This is deep philosophical truth right here: But it don't do no good to get angry So help me, I know For a heart stained in anger grows weak and grows bitter You become your own prisoner as you watch yourself sit there Wrapped up in a trap of your very own Chain of sorrow
Never thought of this much in connection to politics in these “united?” States but today it’s affecting me that way. You better look out below I’m afraid.
So far I could research: The blond was his bass player and (later) wife RACHEL PEER. In the other song "Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness" Rachel, in a surprising 'make over', has a much more sexy appearance !

With JP it’s like free association. But not with words. With themes. There’s like three ideas in this song and I’m not sure they all connect but it doesn’t matter. It just works on an unconscious level. Sort of like Jackson Pollack. Or Jack Kerouac.
What a shallow audience. I remember that people for the most part in the 70's were as about as deep as a thimble. To laugh at the backstory is a crime. John was a massive talent with very little appreciation back then.
I don't need no therapy. I've got John Prine. R.I.P. John. A good friend I never met.
