I've had some luck catching this train at the Tyrone Jct and following it through town heading east. That's a street run for that heavy train against a considerable grade. Never saw any rear-end help. It had been pretty dependable around 12 noon on a Saturday but I can't speak for lately. There are a number of Tyrone street action vids on YT to check out if interested. Nice vid, 9572 and thanks.
If I turned up my speakers it would sound like the train was coming right through my living room. The audio output from my PC goes to my Fischer RS-9005 stereo receiver and I have a pair of 1 meter (39") tall Jensen quadraxials. Each speaker cabinet has 1 supertweeter, a pair of 5" midrange speakers and a 15" Boss subwoofer (the original 15" woofers blew and had to be replaced lol). They thump the walls and rattle the windows. Bwahahaha! >:-)
That's really interesting! The trains are working hard at Tyrone, but its not like here. Thanks for the comment, glad I brought some enjoyment for you.
Wow. I spoke with a CSX employee, and he said he was envious of NS's rebuild program. Who thought that the "Crash Team" and "Horsies" would ever get along?!?
No problem. Horn enthusiast such as myself will normally try to get their hands on old cast models s they play the proper pitch. Many new castings vary in quality which could cause them not to play the correct sound.
Well man you said EVERYWHERE that you lacked the draggage on this trip...but in my book you didn't...cuz you bagged the granddaddy of all the west slope drags, the 536. First of all, 4 banger of SD40-E's on the head end was AWESOME, second, my double zero was in the consist, and lastly, you got my 44 shoving hard as hell, I can't wait to see that unit.
I Know, that is entirely true! The mufflers really kick the sound off. You Most Certainly CANNOT beat the sound of SD40-2's ANYDAY!! NS still has i think 15 SD45-2's left..
Well if you visit the west slope, be surprised by something, these units are going to take over the mountain eventually, and its offical this time. The era of SD40-2's ruling the mountain, are coming to an end..
Audio sounds fine to me, Ian. I'm using a JBL computer Speaker set with SubWoofer on my linux desktop. There's not a lot of bass, but everything else is there... Nice Catch, BTW.
Incredible at the amount of comments! and Thank you, though I hardly ever do train videography anymore. These trains average a good 2 miles in length as well.
There was no road power for this train. It was sitting on PITL 1 probably and a helper set took the point... They dropped the train at Altoona's Rose Yard and went back up the mountain
Though in some cases they are manned and detach from the train while the train is still moving. The helpers then drift back to their stations to help the next train.
I think this is a PPL train going to the power plant at Strawberry Ridge, Pa. If it is then this train will never go away because the Strawberry Ridge power plant has scrubbers which get rid of the sulfuric acid in the smoke!
Haha last trip made me LOVE the 3337, it shoved some GOOD trains along with my favorite black helper, the LOUDER THAN LOUD 3427. But man, idk about you, but I'd be a HELL of a lot more PO'ed that NS took the 3337 out of the Altoona Helper Pool...yea, its been leading ethanol trains these days. Last I heard it was leading a 66Q to Jersey a couple weeks ago.
Now the SD40E's are making a new rule, there is offically going to be a changing of the gaurd on the mountain soon.. the SD40-2's are going to die, and the muted sounds of SD40E's are going to take lead..
check out Push for the Pass pt 1 and 2 its about canadian pacifics pusher station near Rogers Pass BC canada where CP would have 4 head end units 2 mid tarin slaves and 6 pushersnear the raer of the consist all SD40-2 locomotives time line 1988
Yes.... there is something that sounds better.........All the diesel locos built by English Electric in England. In particular their Class 40, Class 37, Class 55(Deltic), Class 31, & Class 20. Check these out on YT. See if you can find any on one of the steepest gradients in England, particularly the Class 37's.....its called the Lickey Incline.
Well, NS played it smart with the 40E's, taking equipment they already have and just advancing further
Thank You!
That is a real coal train with lots of good sound.
I'm glad we'll start seeing more coal trains here in America again.
Thanks, and i understand Completely! Thanks..
Thanks, and when it comes to loaded coal on the Allghenies, nothing can be beat..
Im glad I have headphones to listen to the pounding drums of this EMD music. Great upload...woo ! !
Liked listening to the wheels with the flat spots on some of the cars
536 is always gonna have a good show..
Love the EMD'S thay have a sound unlike no other great video
Ah, thanks for explaining
This Train Is Working Hard Great Video Listen Too That Horse Power I Like Too HEAR THAT sound.
All Right, thanks Jim.. I've noticed there's not very much bass but, better than nothing at all with audio.
Its a siding that leads out of the Cresson Engine Facility. RJ Corman coal drags use this siding whenever they drop it off for NS.
Yea, but its still good to hear the past escape. ;D
Im sure this is NOTHING compared to what that really sounded and felt like in person! AWESOME! 5*
That is a great horn!!!! Just awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!!
we get trains with 5 to 6 engines on it through here every day though its mostly freight but we do get a few coal trains
Thanks, and yea i feel your pain there, last trip, not a single coal train came, and only 1 helper pair was seen in action..
Thank you! I always wondered
Thanks And my Name's Ian. Yep, 536 is a local one for me.. Im about 6 miles from Shire Oaks, which is a ns yrd
Yea Thanks! the 6302/6304 are the only pair in active helper duty as of right now..
I agree, but the SD40E's sound cant be even matched to the awe and mighty sounds of the NS SD40-2's.
Thanks for explaining.
Ah, never knew that they stood for that
Might be so! Thanks for sharing that!
The horns are made in castings. Many old model horns are still produced today, but with new castings.
Man them engines are Glossy! Sound great too!
I bet, 3337 is a nice little helper and always was nice to here.. and for SURE! Hell i'd rather take black than that!
YES! that's the sound i was looking for!
Dang! Now this is how a coal drag is supposed to br loaded!!
Stories from pop pop about the Erie🚂🚂
Could there possibly be anything that sounds better?................no!
thanks for posting wonderful masterpiece in sound.
greetings from New Zealand
Sorry for the late reply, but they didn't have any road power available so they used all helpers to get it over.
@footienz ...go find some video of like 5 SD 70's lashed up, pulling a coal drag up Sandpatch grade ... that's the sound of power!
@SSGWoodruff1 LOL! No kidding, thanks for the comment.
Yes sir ( or ma'am ); these units are rebuilds of EMD SD50 and SD50S models'
If I turned up my speakers it would sound like the train was coming right through my living room.

Brilliant videos !
Awesome coal drage.
Yes, I know.
A New Cast means its a newer brand for the same horn. Like some of the bells are changed up, etc.
Wow. I spoke with a CSX employee, and he said he was envious of NS's rebuild program. Who thought that the "Crash Team" and "Horsies" would ever get along?!?
Great video!
That's North American coal Mr. President!
You So Should! We Could Meet Up!
nice job that is my new favorite from you the rebuilt ns s50s
No problem. Horn enthusiast such as myself will normally try to get their hands on old cast models s they play the proper pitch. Many new castings vary in quality which could cause them not to play the correct sound.
They're known as helper engines..they help push trains with heavy tonnage over graded tracks
@Filmitis I used to think the same as that but these big EMD's with no silencing are much better than all that chunttering and chugging racket.

Yes I know. The plant is located at Strawberry Ridge, PA. The train gets turned over to the NEBR at Tyrone
Its actually quite similar.. The SD40-2's are in that way that you say.. The 40E's will rattle your brain with how much they growl when their idle
I like the concept of North American locos, the standardisation bit, kind of similar in idea to the German Einheitsdampflokomotiven.
Holy shit that is one big freight train! I wonder what each of those 105 trucks weighs?!
those locomotives were really screaming!!!
Lets get ya some real Helpers, YN1, and Conrails.. ;)
The trains just don't look like themselves without the caboose.
Thumbs up if you thought the train was going to use the track coming towards you
Gold right there..
Yep, the unit was I believe painted black in 2001.
We'll get you some Union MP15's working as hard as they can, GP11's, and manned helpers.
Yea, they're really making their presence known. I love em though, haha I'll only hate em the day the last SD40-2 leaves the Altoona Helper Pool.
Well if you visit the west slope, be surprised by something, these units are going to take over the mountain eventually, and its offical this time. The era of SD40-2's ruling the mountain, are coming to an end..

Hey, no need to be sorry! We all make mistakes sometime. Besides that's perfectly fine what you said. That's pretty interesting though.
wow great video!!
Incredible at the amount of comments! and Thank you, though I hardly ever do train videography anymore. These trains average a good 2 miles in length as well.
Hehe, thats a comment a knew was destined to happen.. Thanks Much Mike, and im just still PO'ed NS paint my 3337 Black.. :-((
Then get out here! You better be here by next Summer's end!
Cresson, Pennsylvania.

cool video!
these are my new favorite locomotive geat vid

brinky100 yup. Strawberry ridge
Is there a set time when they get to the power plant?
rdgk1se3019 no

Back when standard cabs were still used alot
I agree entirely!
Welcome to the 3rd Generation K5LA...
EMD GETTING IT DONE
It sure was! Do you mean 105 cars? If so, ( not including the engines ) they are probably a few tons.
Emd Power baby!!! great video 5*
I saw 6310 the other day...
I should say its a 3rd Generation K5LA.
what have they done to the lovely K5LA! my goodness it has been ruined!
Now the SD40E's are making a new rule, there is offically going to be a changing of the gaurd on the mountain soon.. the SD40-2's are going to die, and the muted sounds of SD40E's are going to take lead..
oh wow..
Its not a normal K5LA. Its a new cast K5LA with a restricter on it. I believe
Yeah, well that explains why the 536 has a sporadic appearance
If anyone wants to know when the drivers go to the bath room on the railroad ? The toilet is in the front of the cab.
oh ok thanks
If only the CP kept their older engines cleaner
The only thing that would make this better would be if it weren't welded rail. I miss the click clack!
check out Push for the Pass pt 1 and 2
