And right here is what I love to see! From afar, it looks like a legit Conrail coming at ya. Those SD40-2s sure do sound great when theyre using their horses to push.
They kept PC and PRRs spirit alive. And I was shocked because of how many locomotives they acquired during the merger. They had gp9s that were different in every way! There were ones from erie lackawana, ones from PC, some from shortline railroads and a few other class 2 railroads, and for sure they got their gp30s from reading and lehigh valley
Has any UA-cam video ever caught the wonders of classical thermodynamics like this? We see the forces of mechanical, chemical, electrical and magnetic all in these wonderful GM locomotives. Good show!
And back to the video...the sounds of trip 710s on notch 8 and the Leslie RS3 horns are music to a railfan's ears! The Conrail paint (patch or no patch) is greatly appreciated and I truly miss it.
In the movie "ApocolyseNow" Robert Duvall had a famous quote which would like to paraphrase: "I love the smell (and sight) of screaminn' notch 8 SD-40-2s in the morning"!
@inrun84me Most of the rairoads are having extened life programs. (Except BNSF. Most of the SD40-2s are gone from them.) CSX is rebuilding their SD40-2s and SD50s. NS is also doing it too. UP has had a turn around, and is rebuilding, INSTEAD of retiring the majority of SD40-2s. If anything, we must remeber UP's standard cab C40-8s. THEY are on the cutting block now
@ShadowKnight227 CSX has leased a few of UP's C40-8s via GECX. It is rare not see an intermodal train without a Dash 8 in the consist...well at least where I am. I also have heard recently that CN is aiming at some more Dash-8s but I would think only of the wide cab variety.
The cycling on the smoke is due to the turbo varying in its rpms. It's a sign of a turbo on its way to failure. When maintaining a steady psi in the block at full throttle, there should be little or no smoke. But, when the psi drops due to a turbo problem, you will get more black smoke. When they completely fail, you get mega black smoke!
Most of the time when turbochargers fail you get a large flame shooting from the exhaust manifold.Sometimes alot of smoke, espiecally white or light color, means that the fuel injectors too are about to give up. On the GE AC6000CW's,they were notorious for this, the turbochargers only had a lasting three months at most and then oil would leak into the seals and there was blow by as well.It wasn't a good idea to start out with 6,000 HP and trying to maximize pressure on boost. This is why Union Pacific practically rebuilt theirs into AC4400CW's swapping out the prime movers and changing the stacks. CSX completely got rid of them just like most of the SD70ACE's and gave them to PRLX. However the SD80MAC's did just fine with 5,500 HP and I don't understand why CSX traded them for a dozen SD40-2's awhile back just for NS to either put them in storage or scrap them. They were better when Conrail was still around.
Isn't that the remote control unit on the last 40 there they used to try and use but ended up with going back to the manned units for more reliability? Al Krug at his page shows if these and posted a bit on the units and how they worked in is era..
Just a thought but it could be that as the traction motors slip, and get traction, the engines governor would see the momentary drop in amperage and back off on the HP and as the traction returns, the amps would go back up. then you would see the shot of smoke as the engine loads back up. just a guess.
Ah the Ridge trains.. glad the 536’s are back though not as often as back in the day. I miss the SD40-2’s that used to be Ridge power. They have the rebuilds, 60E’s way too muffled🤷♂️
Like the great sound of 567c thundering away into history, the rumble and whine of 16 cylinder 645e3a diesels will slide into history soon. Enjoy there music ,i sure do
Hello My name is Bert de Koning from the Netherlands I have a Question;;Those loco's on the rearend...is there a driver on board...or are these engines remote controlled... Greetz Bert
+Reflex Photography NZ Turbo clutch not completely letting go on the one SD-40 (the one in Conrail blue). EMD turbo's are clutch driven below a certain RPM, and sometimes won't completely release at high RPM's, especially when worn.
OHHHHHHHH YEA!!!!! Ahh man, my back ones were definitely a hell of a lot SHINIER, but yours definitely SOUNDED better!! But I just gotta ask, if they ran the ALMIGHTY 536 up 2 that day...then what the HELL was coming up track 1!!!
does make a difference wether or ot the second and thrird engine units are backwards or forwards, i noticed some are in reverse and some forwards and some are both, whats the reasoning behind that is there one/
rhondaw1 wheel slip control. much more primitive form than today's new A/C units. when you see the smoke get heavier they are regaining traction, hence put under more load. when the smoke clears up a little it's cuz they are slipping and therefore the prime mover is temporarily not under as much of a load.
that or the load regulator is a little out of calibration... It's too rhythmic to be wheel slip... The system backs off, then it pours it on, but too much, so it backs off, a bit to far, then pours it on again. It's basically and unstable control system. Long way from the heart though, she'll pull till the day she's retired.
@EsPeSD40T I'm so pissed it has taken CSX and NS over 10 years to paint all these ugly conrail engines into black and blue to get rid of that awful conrail paint
And right here is what I love to see! From afar, it looks like a legit Conrail coming at ya.
Those SD40-2s sure do sound great when theyre using their horses to push.
The sweet sounds of EMD's!!!
The SD40-2 are very awesome by the sound! These are my favorite US-Diesel Engines! Five stars from me. Twostrokefan!
The conrail days Great memories. The railroad that changed the railroad business
@@FrehleyFan3988 they also got the GP30s from the PC
2 rare things in this video! Ex-Conrail power still in the Conrail paint scheme at that time, and SD40-2s as the rear DPUs!
Has any UA-cam video ever caught the wonders of classical thermodynamics like this? We see the forces of mechanical, chemical, electrical and magnetic all in these wonderful GM locomotives. Good show!
Man you can't beat that sound. Great catch!
two things that thrill me is a spitfire with the aural joy of the mighty merlin and the same for the incredible EMD SD40-2 at notch 8 .... WOW...
And back to the video...the sounds of trip 710s on notch 8 and the Leslie RS3 horns are music to a railfan's ears! The Conrail paint (patch or no patch) is greatly appreciated and I truly miss it.
Oh that is just sweet. Huffin' and puffin' and blowing the house down! Beautiful heritage engines!
Those 4 SD40”s pushing on the rear are pumping out some serious power ( 12,000 hp via 24 axels)
I love to hear those EMDs at Notch 8, Great vidio, and thank you for posting!
There is about 4 conrails on that train! 3 sd60is and 1 sd40-2
An entire ex-Conrail lash up, now isn't that something? Thanks man!
that was a rare catch. when I saw this, I've seen a train just like that. I was at the bridge in galizzen where you can see ar tower
The areal shot really put things in prospective as far as the weight the train was pulling and pushing. That’s when you could hear trains coming.
Awesome catch!!!!!
Great catch
Hi Dave here I like Con Rail thanks for posting
Dave
Wow. You can see the heat waves rising from the engines.
The boys un back pushing hard.
@pele6922 That's the Helper Link. It allows the helpers to cut away on the fly. It's rarely used though. All the new SD40Es have them too.
Leave it to the EMDs to get the heavy lifting done!!! Three thumbs up!
Nice flashing ditchlights on the SD60I! Nice catch!
Great video!!
In the movie "ApocolyseNow" Robert Duvall had a famous quote which would like to paraphrase: "I love the smell (and sight) of screaminn' notch 8 SD-40-2s in the

@inrun84me The E3A was applied solely to the DDA40X. All other 645's were E3's.
710s and 645s in run 8 together! AWESOME!!!!!
I agree but CSX left most of the class lights intact.
@inrun84me Most of the rairoads are having extened life programs. (Except BNSF. Most of the SD40-2s are gone from them.) CSX is rebuilding their SD40-2s and SD50s. NS is also doing it too. I'm jealous man! To catch a Conrail Quality SD60I I have to wait several months and go out at 3:00 AM to get my shots. Sweet video!
That is one massive train.
Not sure... probably a skip in the engine since it seems to occur in a repeating pattern.
An all EMD lashup, LOVE IT!!!
Awesome!! Thanx for posting!! 645's rule!! Best sound on earth!
@panamcunard The three lead units do. The SD40-2s all have 16-645E3 two strokers in them.
@bertdekoning Bert, The SD-40 locomotives on the rear of the train have the typical crew of 2.

That last sd60i was surging from traction control doin it's job, you can tell by the spurts of black smoke coming out the exhaust
Just a thought but it could be that as the traction motors slip, and get traction, the engines governor would see the momentary drop in amperage and back off on the HP and as the traction returns, the amps would go back up. then you would see the shot of smoke as the engine loads back up. just a guess.
I thought I was the only one who noticed that smoke on the one unit.
Great stuff!
Great Catch!

Hello. My name is whistle700.
It is a great force. Very very strong.
In Japan, are not considered.
Thank you shoot. ★×5!
Nice shot !
EMD's at their finest :) Solid catch!!
thAt was the rarest train I've ever seen=-O
Good Ole Conrail!
Be happy for black and white, all we get here is Armor yellow and Heritage paint
If you ask me Norfolk and southern pain scheme looks boss on sd40-2's
We will all miss big blue!
maybe its being controlled by remote control from the lead, supposedly that can cause it to throttle up and down like that
Nice video!!
you should have went down there and shot the hole train because i love the squeal of those breaks
@EsPeSD40T hah, we had a MP15 and an old conrail engine for switching duties in my yard and it still had the red lights (they are disabled)
Hello
My name is Bert de Koning from the Netherlands
I have a Question;;Those loco's on the rearend...is there a driver on board...or are these engines remote controlled...
Greetz Bert
Sounds like maybe you should have got behind that last unit and started pushing! Long Live Conrail!
I love this video! Great Stuff!
Super Nice !!!!
Great video! Is that extra smoke from wheel slip?!
Jesus there's a lot of power to be had there. How come that Conrail SD40 banker was periodically blowing a bit of extra smoke?
+Reflex Photography NZ Turbo clutch not completely letting go on the one SD-40 (the one in Conrail blue). EMD turbo's are clutch driven below a certain RPM, and sometimes won't completely release at high RPM's, especially when worn.
Make our loco`s here in the UK look pathetic. Would love to see and hear that. Sounds a lot better then a class 66!!!!
Love it!!
A conrail foi comprada ou absorvida por qual empresa?
i never seen 4 dpu's before i rarely see three!
very, very cool
does make a difference wether or ot the second and thrird engine units are backwards or forwards, i noticed some are in reverse and some forwards and some are both, whats the reasoning behind that is there one/
the reason they're backwards and forward mixed is that they couldnt get switched the right way, i always wondered it too
Nice catch. Does anyone know why the last CRQ was rolling in and out of coal?
Yo nice videos.
Sweet video! Nice RS-3L, too!
patios on the rear!
Awesome vid dude 5 stars :)
Can anyone please explain why the engines only appear to smoke intermittently on these units?
rhondaw1 wheel slip control. much more primitive form than today's new A/C units. when you see the smoke get heavier they are regaining traction, hence put under more load. when the smoke clears up a little it's cuz they are slipping and therefore the prime mover is temporarily not under as much of a load.
Looks like the Conrail SD40 needs a little work. 5 stars
Blue COnrail!!!!!!!!
Thats some train to need 7 loco's
Great catch! Also is it still possible to see a com rail?
dinosar Yes. There is a Conrail (NS heritage unit)#8098
Those flexicoil trucks look a little weird under NS paint.
Didn't know 536 still runs in daylight
Rolling Thunder!!
I love to hear EMDs howl at run 8
Relax.
If this video doesn't spell CONRAIL, then I don't know what does!
what are class lights?
They probably should've used all sd60s.
*grunt grunt grunt*
Yeah!!! What I'm saying!!.
@pele6922 EOD maybe??
When under full power
that or the load regulator is a little out of calibration... It's too rhythmic to be wheel slip... The system backs off, then it pours it on, but too much, so it backs off, a bit to far, then pours it on again. It's basically and unstable control system. GE's suck! lol but good video
not sure if coal train is heavier then container train?
