  • Did a setup with rails day before it was supposed to snow. Plan was to get some nice shots with the trains plowing through the snow. Unfortunately, the snow was too heavy and it did go as planned, but it was stil fun. Enjoy!

    To be fair, if scale is taken into consideration, each snow 'flake' would be at least the size of quarter, if not one's entire hand.
    Try plowing through that.

      JuMa Bricks perhaps... but the trains need raw power to slice through snow that deep. The trains here are even said that they don’t have enough power.

    • @RasseruS
      @RasseruS 7 років тому

      Agree, the snow piles up in front of the train and this causes the more power to push away the snow. A plow might help the train to gain some power back.

      Yea. And Also when you make a Snowball,it gets really hard because ur pushing it together. That happens here too. that makes it nearly impossible for the train.

    put a plow on a train car and then put three engines behind that car. that'll give you more pushing power. more wheels and with more power to them also means more traction and weight. and more weight will help you slide less.

    Yah it once snowed about 4 inches where I live and the night before I set up a train track. I took a flat car and put a plow on the front and a side on top for ballast. The flanges in the engine kept being pushed up by the snow and derailing. So I just scooped off all the snow by hand.

    I think its because the trains are too light, so it loses kenetic energy very fast. I'd say add some dead weight to the train, I don't know if it'll work, but maybe next year. (Its almost July 4th)

  • @TheDrksoul

    The problem is, is that you need more mass, the snow in comparison to the train is pretty heavy, like how if someone runs really fast into a wall it's not going to move if the wall is made out of bricks. I suggest more mass on the train, or you could always go for more speed, but there is a limit due to frictional forces and the train not having a lot of momentum (p = mv), additionally there are ways of reducing the amount of friction onto the train by the snow by including things like snow plow at the front to push the snow past the train rather than trying to move it forwards.

    • @Valthornet
      @Valthornet  5 років тому

      The yellow train has 2 motors. Problem is, that when ever you get a bit of snow on the tracks and touch it or the train runs over it, it turns to ice. No matter how much torque you have, small lightweight trains on plastic/ice rails wont work.

    For what it's worth, real trains have the same problem when you scale it up. They have to punch in and back out. It's a bit mundane, yes, but sometimes it's the only way. You can improve your success here by adding a car or two with several of those weights from the old Lego boats. Momentum is a thing...
    A plow of some kind would work. Or some kind of rotary plow.

    I mean... the trains are made of plastic. They're LESS DENSE than the snow.
    it's not a question of 'engine strength' since no matter how many trains you stack up in a row, they won't be able to generate sufficient friction to push forward with.

    Why not build a snow plow train?? Could easily make something V shape at the front of the train and give it that extra edge. If you ran the same thing in real life, the trains would most likely get stuck and derail too. Spent more time doing something pointless than actually thinking outside of the box, as a lego enthusiast... you know building something useful??

      Most of the snow we get here is too hard. On just a few days we get powdersnow, that might work with a plow. And then we dont just get a few mm, but sometimes up to 10-30cm. No snowplow can handle that.

    ur ramp idea was a good one in this, but im not sure if u noticed just how much it was flexing under the weight of ur trains as they went down it...as a result, a lot of the energy they gained from the decent was lost well before they hit the snow, meaning they basically hit with the same force as when they were not using the ramp at all. granted, the fact that u were using box engines didnt help at all, compressing anything makes it a lot harder to get through

    • @Valthornet
      @Valthornet  4 роки тому

      Biggest problem is the traction. Rubber wheels on icy plastic just does not work. And when you compare Lego trains with for example Märklin H0 trains, they are far too light. When I have time I will try to build a heavy train and try agian

    I think your big problem here is physics - your trains are scaled down, but the snow isn't. Think about the shape of the snowflakes: they are wonderfully complex shapes, and those shapes get all tangled together. And to complicate it more, if it is a "wet" snow, a lot of them are partially melting and freezing together. The size, weight, and structural integrity of the snowflakes is all out of proportion to your train scale. If we assume a real snowflake diameter of 3mm, and weight of 0.005g, to the Lego train that would be 11.46cm and 0.191g!!! How does THAT affect your Lego train?

  • @willc6577
    @willc6577 6 років тому +4

    Worst understanding of physics and friction ever. You should've put a weight on the front of the MOC 60051. It had the best shape for cutting through the snow, but wasn't heavy enough on the front end. Next time try putting a small metal washer on the bottom the train to give it more drive. Even if you do this, you still have to account for the fact that snow is an object that is covering the rails themselves. Those wheels are eventually going to spin and the engine stall out after a period of time because it'll be derailed, unless the snow keeps it from veering off-course too much on the sides
