Nu metal appears to be... by complete accident... my fave genre. 50% of the genre is absolutely brilliant and still innovative. Simple riffs with super catchy riffs now with added breakdowns. but the other half is bland, stale and only used as a joke when someone in a UA-cam video gets angry in a comedic way.
Who would you consider stale? I love bands like Taproot, 40 Below Summer, Spineshank, Dry Kill Logic, and Earshot for the exact reasons you laid out, but many people claim bands like them "saturated" nu metal
I think he nailed it too. But I would even go as far as to say the foreign guy is also a huge D&D nerd on the side... since there's a huge amount of fantasy themes to the power metal genre
On the basis of Periphery alone, I would slot "Djent" (or progressive metal if you're splitting hairs) in C. If feel like the influence factor is a little overlooked as they haven't really influenced culture outside of music, but they have had a massive impact on music itself (production, asthetic, etc.)
So true. Pretty much all of Metalcore is Djent infused by now. So the influence factor is pretty large. Also there's this splitting of Djent into different styles. Just look at the difference between Meshuggah, Vildhjarta, Modern Day Babylon, (early and current) Intervals or heck even Polyphia. Djent can be implemented in many different styles.
The only one that got me was the melo death ranking. Not just because I dig it, but because of how many metalcore bands have been influenced by it. Still to this day bands are trying to sound like At The Gates, In Flames or Soilwork.
Early Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my Valentine, early Bring me the Horizon, Killswitch Engage, As I lay dying, All that remains are literally At the Gates Core. I love all of them but you can't deny the Melodeath influence especially At the Gates - Slaughter of the Soul. Even the Crabcore bands (who I also love) such as Attack Attack!, Asking Alexandria still had some At the Gates riffage.
ahah same Athough I love me some prog, but prog-metal would've probably been C or even D in my list - it's not super-influental, it never sold well and I'm not a fan of metal side of it/metal in general
I'm a huge fan of "progressive-ness" in music Opeth is my favorite metal band rn That being said, I think "prog" in general is "music-theory-wankery" for me and most of the bands are not even progressive as Metallica imo
ironically this was the only one I disagreed on, I think djent was more influential then he thinks. 90% of heavy bands nowadays were inspired by AAL, periphery, ATB etc. I reckon B category would have been more fitting
@@Jaydos1470 I LOVE djent, have since Acle was posting 1 minute pre-TesseracT clips on the Harmony Central and Andy Sneap forums. But IMO it's over and done except for the nostalgia, just like thrash. All the stuff that can definitely be classified as "Djent" is more of a Meshuggah tribute than its own thing. Nothing new has evolved from it that is still recognisably "djent". The bands that started there are either still exactly as they were (hello Meshuggah, I still love you) or have morphed into very different sounding bands (hello Contortionist and Vola, I love you more than ever).
The commercially successful ska bands were atrocious but there are probably like maybe 20 great ska bands... I honestly wouldn't stretch much further than that.
Why isn't blackened-death-epic-sanctimony-core in here!? How are me and the other 2 guys in the fan club supposed to get through the day!? That's it! Ima tweet about this!
Although you're hating on my boy Power Metal, I really appreciate your work, man. You seem super genuine and that's super rare these days. ALSO, I swear to god we lived the exact same life, judging by some of the things you say haha
I’ve always considered Disturbed to be nu metal in my eyes. Their first 2 albums were definitely nu metal, and their 3rd album had a little bit of nu metal elements in it, but that’s when they started to change their sound.
I'm not a metal fan by any means...in fact, other than ska and TRL core, i probably couldn't recognize one genre from the next...but, wow, your descriptions of the music these genres play drew me in and now im binge watching your videos. Awesome job, man.
As one of the many complainers on your Black Metal video I’m amazed you even put it that high. Now as for my complaint regarding this one, no traditional Heavy Metal, Doom Metal, Goth Rock, Industrial, Folk Metal, Prog but all these Core and Punk styles that sound the same to me. Bah!
Power Metal is at least an A+ tier. Its a very well crafted kind of music and its very popular among the metal community. And very easy for a non metalhead to like It , cause of catchy chorus, riffs and melodies.
Yeah that’s dumb. The Clash, The sex pistols, DK etc.. are massively influential and sold millions of records. Most people in the scene don’t even know what crab core is
because it really wasn't that obscure it was actually massive. Like it or not it was hugely popular, even though it may have been a dorky trend yes, and even though it was a relatively short trend too (2009 to at the LATEST 2014), when it was here it was HUGE. By 2011-2012 it seemed like almost the entirety of the Warped Tour was nothing but crabcore bands.
@@ChrisCoignet still nuts to say a meme was more influential than.. actual punk. that's like saying gangnam style was more influential than sergeant peppers
@@ChrisCoignet It came and went in a blink of the eye. I made a crabcore joke to my girlfriend (who like hardcore-ish music around that time) and she had never even heard of it.
As an occasional attendee of “red state rock festivals” even though I live in California, I can say that there are a LOT of disturbed, godsmack, five finger death punch, and shinedown fans out there (especially shinedown), including me.
No mention of post-punk? Sure, it's old folks music, at this point, but it's super-influencial and still culturally relevant. Remember all those alt-rock, buzz bands from the early 2000s that totally aped Gang of Four and Joy Division? Plus, I hear a lot of Robert Smith in many emo/pop-punk vocalists and even the emo rappers. And I think Hot Topic will always seem to have Smiths, Cure, or JD represented on their t-shirt racks. It's at least a B tier.
Most of the Post-Punk Revivalists came from the 2000s UK Indie scene, mainly raved upon by the NME. The Libertines, Maximo Park, The Vaccines, The Futureheads, The Rakes, The Cribs, etc. A bit of a far cry to the bands featured on this video.
When I saw Last Days Of Humanity, the vocalist just kind of sat on the stage looking like he was going to cry, there was bad feedback, and the vocal fx pedal (which was setup centre-stage) kept turning itself off mid-gurgle. 10/10 show overall.
Being a bit of an old-school punk enjoyer kinda guy myself, I know for sure my list would look very different indeed. Perhaps I should make my own list with my criteria without worrying about staying objective. I truly appreciate your attitude about making this list and encouraging the viewer to disagree.
I’m usually stingy with likes and comments but you’ve earned both by including footage from The Unseen in your video. My favorite band from when I was in middle school.
Think you forgot Hair Metal (Posion, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi) , Hard Rock (ACDC, Aerosmith, Van Halen) and Classis Metal (Iron Maiden, Judas Priest). All of them on the S tier for sure, they still sell out stadiums and arenas worldwide
The second I heard melodeath put in C my heart died. In flames was my first experience (the first song I heard changed my music taste for the better. Only for the weak) into melodic death metal. I'm so glad I got to see them just before everything went into lock down. Red (who in flames was touring with) had been a favorite for a while (not death metal I know), but their recent stuff, excluding of beauty and rage, which is tied for best album with innocence and instinct SPECIFICALLY deluxe edition. Seeing them both fulfilled another section of music. Breaking Benjamin 4x 3 days grace 1x Red 1x Chevelle 1x Nothing more 1x 5fdp .25x (I only went to see breaking Benjamin and bad wolves) Bad wolves 1x TSO 2x Bowling for soup 1x Red jumpsuit apparatus 1x Falling in reverse 2x (though the concerts haven't happened yet) All I need to add now to die happy, is architects, slipknot, Billie eilish, a7x, and powerwolf
The "example" track that was playing during the deathcore segment (at 15:41) is "Unanswered" by Suicide Silence. _Also,_ that style of singing (described at 16:51) commonly found in grunge, post-grunge, butt rock, etc.-popularized by singers like Eddie Vedder, Gavin Rossdale, and so forth is actually called *"yarling".*
I'm definitely in that group of people that weirdly missed notifications for the last few weeks. Sucks big time, but I'm glad I searched for your channel and came across all you new (relatively) videos that I missed. Epic chart btw.
it never fails to amaze me when i watch one of these videos from finn and his tastes are like the opposite of mine nearly 80% of the time. i personally only like one genre from the s and a tiers and im kinda glad he left out prog metal which i adore because knowing him it would be near the bottom even though it would do well on nearly all criteria which is the same for several genres he made too low on the list.
"Mall Screamo" isn't an actual genre, so post-hardcore is rolled into what he was referring to as mall screamo along with all the other music from this same era (2001-2008) that was more pop-punk and/or alt-rock adjacent
"Probably gonna hurt some butts here" Guess you could call me... Butt hurt. Nah but pretty fair I'm into that midwest emo stuff but anytime I show a friend they look at me like I killed a dog.
Real punk isn't really about selling musicit's about getting a message out there that actually matters in our society today they did a lot of work which I thank them for 👍
Almost all "real punk" have a very sophomoric approach to political theory. If the subreddit "I'm 13 and this is deep" was a rock genre, it would be political punk. It was contrarian simply to be contrarian and had no real answers to life's quagmires.
I would honestly switch black metal and death metal- It's true the imagery of black metal is "in" in the fashion scene, but the music as well has started to gain attraction from non metal fans. Rap and pop have gone darker and the whole fashion angst is very in, just not in the corny nu metal way, but teens going "im dark and edgy" I've honestly met ALOT of kids into expensive designer cloth talking about Darkthrone, Burzum and other second wave black metal bands. A lot of soundcloud rappers as well as easy to listen to black metal like Deafheaven (yes I called them blackmetal) might have a lot to do with it, but fashion is much darker at this point and happy go lucky attitude is not what kids want. For extra points, I love the fact that the Trve dickheads precious genre might go mainstream
I had no idea so many of my favorite bands are referred to as "Butt Rock." Hilarious. Would only argue for this genre, Godsmack has been one of the biggest in commercial success in all of rock, as well as Five Finger Death Punch (of which I'm not a huge fan, but alas...). And "Butt Rock" (is there seriously not another name for this??) is the closest in heavy rock evolution of blues. I'd say it sits at a B, if not A tier, regarding the standards here. As always, thank you @thepunkrockmba for your badassery and putting out great content.
All these emo-rap ideas you have really hit home as I still dress very much like how you discribe and working on my two content and even have a emo-rap style track with screams/growls comeing out tomorrow on UA-cam...
“That was in 2010...it’s been ten years...” Me: holy shit where’d that decade go?? Honestly though, I’d love to see a profile on the Offspring and their influence being both punk but reliably radio played for decades. I need your take Finn! Or that Linkin Park video. 😂
Finn, I really wanna see some kind of analysis on why bands of mystery make such waves in the scene. Slipknot, GWAR, Ghost, Mushroomhead, Sleep Token....all these bands have severely dedicated followers yet some dont even know who the members are. Is the magic in the mask? Or is it just the simple mystery of these artists that carries the full interest. I love your analysis videos man, they are absolutely stellar. Stay metal.
Thank you for using a scene from Hesher to depict the thrash metal scene. That is one of my favorite movies and that is a perfect visual for the genre.
Hey Finn, love the vids! I just wanted to make a comment about the Ska classification. Ska is an umbrella term of multiple eras and your focus was solely on what is known as Third Wave Ska. It really doesn’t take into account the historical significance of ska in Jamaica or the massive social significance of the Two Tone era of ska in the U.K. I love all eras so I’m inherently biased but I think when ska is judged in whole, it would be held in higher esteem. There’s actually a great documentary out called Pick It Up: Ska in the 90s that examines the entire history as well as the future. I highly recommend it to anyone with even a casual interest in the genre.
Obligated to say I both agree and disagree with the ranking of ska If you’re talking only third wave, then yeah that’s fair. But counterpoint: take a look at how many Spotify listeners these ska bands have. I know it’s not the only way of measuring a band/musics reach but I think it says something when a band like reel big fish is near a million people who consistently listen to them monthly, meanwhile a legendary emo band like American football only has 300k. Also keep in mind that most people who listen to ska bands like reel big fish are older and don’t use streaming to begin with so those numbers are probably higher I would also say it’s more influential than people think. Most punks at some point had listened to ska and started playing music/going to shows because of ska. They just don’t wanna admit it because they can’t form their own opinion and think it’s cool to hate shit just to hate shit And lastly, the genre has done so much new stuff since the 90s and different bands have had huge success, especially internationally speaking. It’s just a genre that suffers from really loud fans who only push the same 5 bands from the 90s, so people think the genre hasn’t done much since then Edit: just wanna add that I saw your comment on how you’re learning how defensive ska fans are. I can’t speak for all ska fans, but ska fans like me get bummed out by perceptions of ska because the genre has output so much since 2002, and has a long history before it blew up in the 90s that often gets overlooked, and it sucks that what people think of ska is such a small percentage of all the genre actually is.
As someone who isn’t really a ska fan. In the sense I really (really) like the 90s stuff. The older stuff is a bit mellow, and RBF is my fave band, but I have to concede it’s just rock/punk with trumpets. My ska range is really just regional. I enjoy Spanish, Japanese ska a lot, the Aussie scene though small is really good. The Porkers are fantastic! But I have to confess they all have that 90s third wave Orange County vibe. My point is, I’m what’s wrong with Ska fans 😁
One thing people don't seem to realize is that the whole grunge look (old flannels from a thrift store and old worn jeans), is it was never originally meant to be a style. The people in the grunge band probably didn't have a ton of money so they needed to get cheap clothes. There's a lot of logging up in the Pacific Northwest, and a need for a light layer over your shirt, so they wore flannels. Lots of people own jeans, so it's no shocker that they did. Since jeans can be expensive, why through them out when they start to get worn. Wear them until they're unwearable. The people in the grunge bands were not trying to create a new style, the media just interpreted it that way.
@@Chris24Adam Maybe while they were performing they got warm and sweaty, but when they leave they get cold again. Plus, when they're just going about living their life it's cold.
That voice crack at 3:13 😂 dunno if it's just me or if I'm noticing that the latest videos are funnier/have more humor in them than usual... and I love it!
Finn has never mentioned my favorite bands/genre of heavy music: post hardcore/emocore Thursday, Thrice, Alexisonfire, Silverstein, Story of The Year, From Autumn to Ashes. It was my gateway to Metalcore, and was hoping for them at least to have room here. But, great video! Cheers
Brooo same! I think maybe they get lumped in with the mall screamo bands? They kinda came out around the same time, some of the big songs from the genre had some commercial success and there's a lot of similarities. On another note Silverstein put a pretty good album out this year that I've been playing a lot.
IMO melodic death should have been in B category. In Flames, Arch Enemy, Amon Amarth and Children of Bodom are still a huge bands that tour with mainstream metal acts around the globe. Where is groove metal BTW?
To me melodeath could definitely be ranked higher - since I'm from Europe (Finland more spesifically) I can for sure say "Göteborg" metal has been a largely impactful genre for European metal bands. I however got a huge bias since I love it personally but I think globally maybe B tier would be justifiable. Ps. Absolutely love your videos. You have a huge talent at being able to be objective towards music and when you're not, you turn that into a joke or a sarcastic statement that cranks me every time!
I would say In Flames’s Soundtrack to Your Escape was my first exposure to melodeath back in 2004 and really hooked me from the start. The Quiet Place is an absolute banger and the entire album is solid. This probably helped pave the way for my entry to metalcore back in the late 2000s as before that I was listening to nu and alt metal like LP, LB, Korn, and Slipknot. Ever since, I’ve aways really liked the juxtaposition of melody and heaviness and it’s even allowed me to open up to even heavier stuff like deathmetal, deathcore, grindcore, and even slam.
Hey Mr. McKenty, great video and great arguments! I particularly enjoyed your bit of petting the cat backwards, haha. However, I know you don’t like melodeath, but considering your preference for the American metalcore bands and arguments for why they score so high, I was wondering why you did visibly mention melodeath’s huge influence on melodic metalcore riffing (e.g., “swedish riffs”). Maybe you did take this into account but the terrible (in your views) juxtaposition of melody and death metal overruled that influence to keep melodeath ranked as low as it is. Anyway, I was a little surprised that the whole swedish melodeath riff aspect of metalcore wasn’t mentioned. Great video, and thanks for keeping the talks on heavy and hardcore music alive and thriving!
As someone who loves Melodic Death Metal, honestly it's a hit and miss. Some bands do it great, and others don't. The best Melodeath band going right now in my opinion is Be’Lakor. Such talented musicians.

Agreed
Who would you consider stale? I love bands like Taproot, 40 Below Summer, Spineshank, Dry Kill Logic, and Earshot for the exact reasons you laid out, but many people claim bands like them "saturated" nu metal
As someone who spent my early teens listening to almost purely power metal... I have never heard a better description of the genre.

Meshuggah crush, the rest of it is lame.

The only one that got me was the melo death ranking. Not just because I dig it, but because of how many metalcore bands have been influenced by it. Still to this day bands are trying to sound like At The Gates, In Flames or Soilwork.
ARCH ENEMY!!!

@@Jaydos1470 I LOVE djent, have since Acle was posting 1 minute pre-TesseracT clips on the Harmony Central and Andy Sneap forums. @@bengreenbank
Crabcore isn't even an actual genre, but a term that was coined to make fun of that dorky trend in Metalcore.
because it really wasn't that obscure it was actually massive.

As an occasional attendee of “red state rock festivals” even though I live in California, I can say that there are a LOT of disturbed, godsmack, five finger death punch, and shinedown fans out there (especially shinedown), including me.
It strangely hurts to see Shinedown knocked down a peg but this shit keeps me humble.

Almost all "real punk" have a very sophomoric approach to political theory. If the subreddit "I'm 13 and this is deep" was a rock genre, it would be political punk. It was contrarian simply to be contrarian and had no real answers to life's quagmires.

True.
It’s like 80’s Heavy Metal but more badass.
“I’m putting butt rock at D” man that was a shot to the heart. I agree but damn, that still hurt.
Honestly something like Black Metal is something rock needs right now.

I can't get over how great the face is in the thumbnail... 😂😂😂
Obligated to say I both agree and disagree with the ranking of ska
If you’re talking only third wave, then yeah that’s fair. Also keep in mind that most people who listen to ska bands like reel big fish are older and don’t use streaming to begin with so those numbers are probably higher
I would also say it’s more influential than people think. Most punks at some point had listened to ska and started playing music/going to shows because of ska. They just don’t wanna admit it because they can’t form their own opinion and think it’s cool to hate shit just to hate shit
And lastly, the genre has done so much new stuff since the 90s and different bands have had huge success, especially internationally speaking. It’s just a genre that suffers from really loud fans who only push the same 5 bands from the 90s, so people think the genre hasn’t done much since then
Edit: just wanna add that I saw your comment on how you’re learning how defensive ska fans are.
I love power metal, but you nailed it with the gym reference.

I mostly hate that style of american metalcore for the reasons you said. But this isnt about my personal preferences
