This is the first in a few updates I'm going to put out over the coming year chronicling some changes to the channel as we go forward. I'm having to do some life restructuring and I thought I'd roll some channel stuff in there too.
I need to clean house but I need to do it right and I need to do it my way. So gonna try following my own lead openly, without apology. - Ігри

I've always made my own decisions for this channel, but yeah people getting grumpy used to get to me. Now I'm actively doing something I KNOW will piss off a certain faction, but it matters less because I'm acknowledging this is for me. And besides, everything will still get done hell or high water. it's just a question of how it's approached and I think focus fire is more efficient than two huge series-ships when I'm one stressed TA with no personal editor (or three, hello some channels I can think of)

The irony is that through selfishness one can actually make MORE people happy as you can focus on one thing being as enjoyable as possible beyond balancing more than one project.
Or to summarize: You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but you cannot please all of the people all of the time.
TLDR: Sometimes quantity does NOT beat quality. This is one of those times.

Ya ain't being selfish mate, you're getting things in order in the way that works best for you. Wearing you out means we wouldn't have more fun stories to begin with, but I know that if XCom is the only videos coming out for a while, I probably should go ahead and give them a try since I haven't yet. I'm here for you, not just for a specific part of what you make!

That pleasing everyone can be maddening and stressful isn't really surprising, this isn't really selfish as you're just looking at the situation you've found yourself in and simply concluded that it'd be healthier/better for yourself to make changes to it.

It helps being selfish from time to time. Let's you re-assess things, re-organize, re-prioritize, and sometimes even helps you come up with ideas you never considered implementing before, or have thought are too crazy and/or silly to put into motion - but might just end up working out in the long run.

I can recommend never trying to please everyone. Not only are there some people that you shouldn't please (this isnt that case luckily) but this is your channel, and so having a healthy balance between what you want to do and what the audience wants to see is key.

Don't worry, some of us actually care about your enjoyment and will stick around, cause we like YOU. Not the games you play, but your humor, personality, style and so on. I am such a person and i'm sure there are more like me. So do what you like, what makes you happy. It will always reflect on your content positively. And if you can't please everyone? So be it, you can't please them all. It's not the end of the world and, if you keep making quality content and keep improving your skills, then i am certain, that you'll have a loyal viewer base that'll stick around and support you, regardless of the game, wait times for the next vid and so on.

Just do what you are enjoying. My favorite series so far is the XCOM one but just like Seth, if you get burned out of the game, there really is no reason to hold on to it. After all it is not the game that matters, it is the person, and as long as you take pleasure in what you do, it shows in the end product.
Person, not the game is true for some. But undeniably it's untrue for others. Even I don't just watch EVERYTHING my faves make blanketly. And sometimes a single game focus can change a person's content style (hello ToG BoI becoming more scream focused and less narrative). With XCOM and with some future series I want to make sure I make good choices. As, at least in XCOMs case, there's a meta-narrative beyond just a playthrough. A narrative I want to see conclude.

If u do what u enjoy doing, your content will get better, just be flexible with your content but have fun and enjoy it, because that's when your content is at its best and then people won't mind what u play because it won't be about the game as such it will be about u and you will be with a main entertaining factor in the videos if that makes sense. In summary if u enjoy the content u make people will enjoy it aswel no matter what it is

Personally not huge into X-Com, but do whatever makes you happiest and work's better for you. Not only will you be able to make better content for everyone to enjoy by doing so, but you're health and happiness is far more important than anything else regardless.

I realized UA-cam never told me this had been released so I’m watching it now.
Honestly, I think “being selfish” and focusing on one series first is a smart idea, and probably better for your mental health than the (rather exhausting looking) series juggling act.
This is also beneficial for the audience because some viewers may be like me, and occasionally forget what had happened in the last episode of a series because there was an episode of a different series inbetween the two episodes of the first series. I often find myself waiting to for three or so episodes of a series to be out and then binging them in one sitting so that I don’t get series events mixed up in my head. So I think it’s a good idea for the audience as well.
P.S. Anyone who gets really upset about this update video can piss right on off.

TLDR; Good.
From my understanding "do what *you* want to do with *your* channel." is typically the advice most youtubers seem to give when asked about how to get into YT sustainably, and I imagine that's because (as with most things in life) to please others you must sacrifice of yourself - that's why there's this idea that doing things for your own sake is "selfish".
But I mean... Sustaining your health ISNT what most would selfish. Nobody whos not a bell-end. It's a fact that you will, and have, consumed more in this life that you'll ever produce but it's not "selfish" to live a healthy life.
I know it may be cynical to say, but a channel is as much a business as it is an outlet. You are effectively CEO of OEM Inc. You do what's best for your workers and your product and youll see it improve.
Like... Yes, lets be real, there are PLENTY of people here who are like, I dunno. Under 17 and thusly only really wanna see the funny british fellow play the orc game, or the alien game. But I think catering to those people exclusively is a trap.
Because you'll kinda end up in a position where youre ONLY producing that, and that's not an attractive idea for many people (presumably you). You can easily look at say... Nothernlion, and say "I envy his success. I want to get where he's at." but NL built his community from literal YEARS of playing the same 5 or so games to the point where he has likely played more of 1 of those games, than every other game has played in his entire life combined. Sure, NL finds it fun. That's great, and it works for him.
But you can look at people like say... RTGame. RT made TF2 content for years, was miserable about it eventually, and tried to branch out. The *moment* he did, he saw unprecedented success and growth - because he was stimulated, he was having fun. Now RT is a streamer, so his style and opportunities for comefy are very different from edited let's plays, _BUT_ the fundamental truth of this is that he _WOULDNT_ be where he is now if he had just pressed his nose to the grindstone of TF2.
Dont get me wrong, I'm not at all fatigued from your "main" series' but I fear _you_ might be. I, like I presume many people here, are here for your style. I think you're a multi-talented individual and with the wide breadth of games and such that are out there I'd hate to see you stuck in a situation where you wake up, look at your set-up, and groan to yourself as you realize you'll be up for... Maybe 10-12 hours today, and maybe another 10 tomorrow to get footage for a series you're just not having fun playing anymore - largely in part to the hassles imposed by the condition under which you play it.
I know it's a bit tacky to mention, but Bret found out too late that working in niche is a trap. He uploaded isaac, just for some fun, found himself in that niche, and when he tried to leave he had already, unwillingly, become an "isaac" UA-camr. He never set out to be one, but that's what happened. His variety content went in decline because he was catering to the majority he hadnt realized he'd attracted.
So... Good. All success begins with self-interest. It's not inherently a bad thing. Do what's best for you and you'll likely find that what you do will grow alongside you.
That last comparison is exactly why I stopped watching him. I don’t intend to follow those mistakes, but I intend to do something a little “out there”.
My theory is if I can “goodbye” ie complete both the “big shows” then I can sieve the “this game” folk out from the “this guy” folk. And then move forward with a staple CHANNEL fanbase that is greater than the current “non-SW/XCOM” crowd (around 1k people judging by video views. Down from 10/20k on the two big’uns) it wouldn’t be a 100% retention obviously, but then I can make my own choices without feeling hounded by other games’ locked in audiences
I'd imagine LWOTC compatible mods would have WOTC compatible versions
LW2 ones often didn't for X2 vanilla. X2 Vanilla mods would often make LW2 versions, that's a given. But given the changes to tech trees, mission types, enemy damages, ranges, weapons, stealth, sight, etc etc. it was becoming a common theme I saw that LW2 mods would never / rarely come out with a Non LW version afterwards. Because converting one way was easier than the other, and LW2 had the bigger guaranteed market of downloads.

Yeah that's fine (especially since I'm all about that xcom 2 gameplay and not a shadow of mordor fan) mental health and stability should take precedence, especially since over doing it will make anything and everything worse. Do take your time and take breaks and what not.
On another note (bit of a rant):
I would like to talk about a comment down below that talks about people genuinely sticking around even if you don't play the games they want (this isn't targeted toward you, just youtubers in general). The games do matter, and that it isn't just a case of "you aren't true fans if you ONLY came for the youtuber". It is a mix of both the youtuber themselves and the game that makes this perfect smoothie blend of entertainment.
I do like your content and seth's, but I lose interest when I watch youtubers that play games that I don't really care that much about (generally non-xcom stuff). Maybe I'm not a TRUE fan, but I'd still say I am a fan and I do support your stuff. It slightly annoys me whenever people say you were never a fan if you did not come just for the youtuber.
Anyways don't get burnt out :P take care of yourself.
It’s alright. I’m a logical guy and I know from my own experience I don’t watch EVERYTHING my faves make. But I will admit a lot of people are closed minded and won’t watch anything that isn’t the specific thing They like and will attack what isn’t that. That’s equally silly.
But as I replied to that comment. The number here for Me, not particular games is fractional, like a tenth sometimes twentieth. I want to treat this “house clean” with respect to try and unify as many as I can and hopefully take us all into some good fun we all like.
Yeah we’ll lose some on the way, a few thousand probably but I’d like to keep who I can and open some eyes. Cos some of my favourite games have come from finally “giving in” and watching things from my fave creators that wasn’t my cup of tea. Example? XCOM, Albino Lullaby, Hearthstone, Silent Hill, OFF, FTL, and so so many more.

This is not selfish, it’s sensible.
People burn themselves out almost 100% of the Time when they’re juggling like a bazillion different series’ at once. And with the fucking mountain pile of editing you have to do, it’s reasonable to cut down how much you do.

I very much like this change. I think you fell into a trap similar to folks like Tear. Which is bouncing around to a bunch of the games your viewers are interested in. While admirable I think it's just way too stressful and fucks with your output. Meanwhile look at a guy like Chuggaaconroy he is a let's player who only does ONE game until he completes it. People still love and engage with his content and his output is pretty damn consistent.
Yeah. Tear got caught by BoI and it changed him to the point I couldn’t watch anymore. I refuse to fall into that trap. I’ve had the strain stage, now I’m backing out before it’s too late
Screw the people who complain that their favourite series isn't getting a new video every other day.
I wanna see more GOOD XCOM and SOW videos too, but they're very quickly gonna STOP being good if you don't enjoy making them.
I'd rather have a video on, I dunno, Moonlighter, Deep Rock Galactic or Warhammer Mechanicus as long as you enjoyed making it.

I'd say 40K is an acquired "taste" but "madness" feels like a better term.
In my experience 40K seems to be like Undertale & Jojo. Its fans insist on making EVERYTHING about 40K, even when unrelated and trying to do its own thing or just have a nice time. And there's an underlying aggression to the "YOU WILL LIKE THIS" from a lot of the enthusiasts who've tried to get me into it in the past that puts me off.
Granted I know most people are nice. But as with the prior examples - it's hard to want to get into something for the positive reasons, and then be unable to talk about those things you just enjoy without a swarm of locusts descending on you because memes about Emprah, Xenos, mudda mudda, "lol sans" etc. All power to the people who put up with the stigma and enjoy their hobbies like normal folk tho :)

Used to do that. Nobody cared lol. In fact it got a good deal of complaints so I even took a couple of them down.
I'll probably be streaming at some point (that's likely to be mentioned in Pt 2 when that has enough material) but that's just gonna be Twitch stuff, stream archive only really lands if you have a community who like to watch longform unedited videos - which I don't. They're either from my old shortform content or my newer higher edit/story content.
Even when those newer videos go long, the views drop off hugely so the audience just doesn't appear to be there.
Might as well build a separate audience of stream enthusiasts (naturally there being some crossover, but interest based not by forcibly putting it out on the channel) on a stream platform someday rather than try to combine.

No it means people in the mod scene will start making all the exciting mods as LWOTC mods that don’t play ball with the typical WOTC, where my series is based. Meanwhile some of my mods are so old they’re never be updated for LWOTC compatibility. You see the split brewing?

To be honest, I am a stupid piece of garbage, so when I saw that you're channel name was now Edit:ed and no longer Overenglishman, I had initially feared that you were taken down and someone else uploaded whatever they downloaded of your channel, or that someone was stealing them and posing them off as their own stuff.
Literally, I just noticed today that you changed your name, even though I have been watching your series's (XCOM specifically) whenever it comes out and replying to your posts.
But I am glad that you are trying to focus on one thing, and have been, until its completion. I am neurodivergent, so focusing on multiple tasks is often very difficult for me, so I try to complete one task until its done as well.
I enjoy your stuff so much, and while I will miss the aesthetic of the proper, nervous British man playing and voicing video games, I know that you will still manage to deliver fantastic stuff, and that you'll still be the Overenglish man in my heart! Godspeed, you magnificent bastard!

TL;DR I'm aware there are "Factions" of sorts in my community. Who will only watch certain videos and complain it isn't other ones. Of the two big ones (X & SoW), one (XCOM) is nearer completion and active fun to make (plus a huge change on the horizon that could breka it entirely). So I'm gonna make that til it's done for now. But SoW & others will be focused afterward so please don't worry nor complain. I don't need to be told you aren't going to watch, it'll be over sooner this way.

True. But they are significantly smaller in number. Like hundreds, maybe just above 1k compared to 10/20k.
I do this right and I keep everyone in the loop so they don't feel cheated - I can unify all three / four types. Like it's supposed to be in the myth of channels being "creator first".

I love that it's happening. But it's a death-clock for my series. As with vanilla X2 and LW2, post-LWOTC mods are going to be designed for compatibility with LWOTC as they'll want the guaranteed audience downloads. As LW2 mods didn't play nice in X2 without LW, so too I believe will LWOTC and WOTC. Thus I need to preferably wrap MBR before LWOTC releases so people who refuse to read don't spam my comments asking where is, and every mod that I love suddenly breaks itself changing that precious LWOTC compatibility
Besides, as it stands I've effectively BUILT my own LWOTC with the amount of shit I've added. And I don't want it jeopardised

Like if you had gone a year or two without making a video on a series I think it's a fair question to ask what happened to it, otherwise I can see it being annoying.
Also LW2 is coming back? Thought the devs of the mod had jumped ship a while back. Huh, that's interesting.
Personally I wasn't really able to get into LW2 (LW1 is a masterpiece tho) so i'm curious to see what the outcome of this update will be.
As always, focus on your mental health whenever you can dude, it's not worth to burn yourself out for a handful of videos.
It mostly got annoying because yes there'd be gaps but people would simultaneously be spamming questions while ignoring updates in every channel of communication I could think of (community posts, comments, videos, descriptions, tweets etc) that answered those exact questions. Internet gonna internet but still I was losing my tether. So since SoW is the less updated and the furthest in the past (recorded at launch, not exactly gonna change if I leave it longer is it? Already recorded 75%) then I may as well focus on the one with the most audience engagement, friendlier community and the one I enjoy making. Which'll in turn make SoW better when I come back to it with those refined skills.
@@EditEdward I think that's a good compromise, like I said before I will watch anything you put out my man, do what makes you the happiest, we will watch it because we enjoy your commentary, jokes and editing, you could be playing fortnight and i'm sure you could make it fun to watch lol.

I honestly don't care about the game. Plus UA-cam should always be fun first get paid ( and ask some serious enough questions about the algorithm) later.
Honestly I make so little from this I haven't even considered the pay angle in years, it was more just a constant whack a mole of trying to A: make popularity so there's more than 1k people watching videos that aren't from 2 specific games and B: stop peopling shouting at me from one camp or the other that I'm not making one or the other.
So I choose option C: my own option - throwing all my toys in the air, focusing down what's left, and starting again properly
