  • Continued working my way through trying to work out what was making the strange noise. As a recap, it sounded like dustbin lorry with a hydraulic transmission. That nasty whine that went up and down with engine speed. It doesnt come over too well in the videos but it was there from idle up to about 2500 rpm.
    Last video i thought i had diagnosed the idlers for the aux belt being at fault....WRONG!

    Crankshaft pulley vibration damper is breaking up.
    I’ve seen the crank pulley fall off on m57s numerous times.
    The rubber between the inner and outer pulley goes soft.

      Will be the same pulley on an m47 too.
      No load on the crank pulley when the belt is off.

    A good way to identify power steering pump issues is to watch the fluid with the vehicle running. If it stays nice and dark red it's probably OK unless there is a detectable mechanical issue like a worn bearing, but if the fluid turns pink and frothy, like a milkshake, then there's probably and issue as the fluid is getting aerated. It's not so easy to tell on a vehicle with a divorced power steering reservoir as here but if there are sufficient issues to be causing a bad noise it'll probably be churning up the fluid sufficiently for it to become noticeable in the reservoir fairly quickly...

    To save hassle with removing and refitting the tensioner pulley shaft, I'm thinking you could have just unbolted the old pulley wheel from it's shaft left in situ on the car, and replaced with the new pulley wheel taken from the new shaft? As in, getting a spanner on the bolt that holds the pulley wheel on to stop it spinning, then unwind it/wind on the new pulley wheel. In theory, the moving (and broken) part is replaced and the metal shaft is still a metal shaft.
    That is, presuming you have enough access to get a spanner behind the pulley wheel when it's on the car. Maybe someone can let me know.

    I would agree alternator, I had a similar noise on mine on a focus. More work, but would taking the bumper off and removing rad make thing easier?

      Yeah it was the alternator. Weird thing was there was no play in either bearing, but it still made a noise. Swapped it today and it’s sorted now. Will post a video tomorrow.

    I would go with alternator think if it has a freewheeling clutch in it probably siezed up no sure am just taking a guess.

    These suffer starter issues : How much did you start it? I’ve a 535d which used to flatten the battery if started much without being fully charged between. Used to labour to kick over the starter (a bit like yours sounds). New starter meant whizzy transformed instant start and no battery issue since. Reset battery condition monitor.
    Can too much load do the alternator in?

    hey and how did you take out the idler pulley ? i cant get it out, i just removed the nut, but the pulley is still on the same place, not moving, and its like glued in there

      Hi mate, such a long tome a go i cant remember. Some of the idlers bolt in from the front, but there is one that is mounted on a long rod that has a bolt at the back behind the alternator. Very hard to get to. Curse BMW!!! Good luck! I feel your pain and scuffed knuckles!

    Its one of the reason why i don't like modern cars. Designed to last 10 yrs and piss you off trying to get to something when fixing it

    Oh just finishing your video, I have same engine and same noise problem. Did you manage to sort it out at the end?

      Yes it was the alternator. I would suggest you remove the belt at front just to check the noise goes away. Good luck

    How did you know there was a "tiny imperceptible bit of play" ? ,were you using "THE FORCE", I am not helping am I, I'll get my coat.

      Wouldn't it be easier to remove the alternator mate? I am going to replace the tensioner at the back bcs I think the noise is bad but vibrating belt is worse imho.
