Imagine the old days. Falling asleep at night and hearing a steam whistle off in the distance
Absolutely
Hoboism
Would be lovely
I remember the sounds of shunting done by steam shunters in the night.
A warm night, windows opened, on the bed, the sounds of steam.
But, that was 65 years ago.
Ahhh, the memories.
Happens every night for me. There’s a 10pm train that comes through announcing my sleep every week day.
They sure don't make em like they used to. You go BIG BOY 4014. Show em what you got.
That sound of BIG BOY is the sound of OLD AMERICA. The great industrial era. WHEN AMERICA WAS GREAT! When folks were proud to be living in America.
The whistle blow and just the sound of power from the locomotive - WOW! That must have been really something to experience in person! Thanks for sharing 🚂
It really was!! Can't wait for it to come by again!!
@@BillsRandomStuff Just give that monster LOTS OF ROOM as he goes by!
@@A_Bit_of_Thought yeah, those people were waaaaaay too close to the track. They didn't blow the whistle for the delight of the foamers, they blew it to get them to move back! At one point that guy was literally in the foul of the track.
@@CrowDawg11 Not only is there the danger of being physically hit, but the engine farts out high pressure steam in all different directions. Getting blasted by the steam can result in some nasty burns.
@@CrowDawg11 Maybe that's how they get the whistle to blow - clever.
Growing up hearing the sound of distant steam trains haunting whistle is a fond memory.. Its no wonder so many people come out to see this great train run along the tracks.
There's just something so grand and majestic about a steam locomotive.
I feel those people stayed a little too close for too long for that crews nerves especially at that speed
I thought the same. Stupid.
I agree completely! The Union Pacific website keep telling people to be back at a minimum of 25 '
They shouldn't have even been where they were, let alone the guys who crossed the tracks.
Idiots 😳😳😳😳
Ya there are a lot of dumb people out there that don't know their cameras can zoom in
I remember at school, the railway line was at the end of our playing field. On runs we used to stand on the bridge and see the occasional steam train go past. This was early 70s in the UK, our teachers allowed to go see them and posted the date and times. It was awesome.
What part of the UK?
end of UK steam was Aug1968. Was it a preserved line?
Steam lasted National Coal Board lines until the mid 1970s.
Train whistle passing was fascinating
all across the US, all around the world, adult and child. Never forgotten.
@@lozziel9662 Nope, there were steam freight services into London until 1971 - London Transport didnt stop using steam on the national rail network until then, it was only BR that stopped in 68. National Coal Board ran steam well into the 1980s in some places
Love the sound of that steam whistle! Takes me back to the time when everything was steam and you could tell who the engineer was by the way he blew the whistle.
It also meant - time to work at the factory. Not such a pleasant thought.
@@paulsawczyc5019, It also meant quitting time and time for a cold beer.
Yabba dabba doooooo!!
But, was that a steam whistle or an air horn?
@@swiftadventurer On a steam engine it's a steam whistle. Diesel locos have air horns. There's no comparison to thesounds.
That steam whistle gives me chills.
goosebumps
Im just in love with the traditional single head lamp. When they put ditch lights on the newer locomotives they just dont look the same at a distance.
We had 6 tracks going past a short distance from our house when i was young in the late 50's and early 60's and I still miss hearing those soothing and sad whistles.
That sound is pure gold.
Crazy standing that close to the tracks. You could've hurt the engine.
WOW! When you have 5 million pounds of huge locomotive bearing down on you and you aren't smart enough to move back far enough for safety, something is wrong in Texas.
It puts the conductor in a bad spot.
@@evankeal The conductor's got no control what these over eager railfans do. Even in the yards when they coming back on their last trip, the UP police had to yell at people to get off the tracks when an intermodal was coming through.
@@Chuck59ish Yep, no control, hence the bad spot.
Exactly what I was think. What a fool.
@@Chuck59ish and a 6c33p9 I v7
Engineer should have opened the water valves from the cylinders when those idiots were standing there!!!!!! lol
I was thinking the same thing, our neighbors dog used to Chase the trains one morning the engineer opened up the steamcocks and gave him a steam cleaning LOL he didn't seem to chase trains after that!
@@ianhotson6057 HAHA thats funny!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic footage! I remember when they first got her to make a feeble croak. Such a gorgeous machine!
Him actually, guess the largest steam locomotive earned the name King of the Rails
Very excellent indeed including the scenery. Back in 2010 here in my hometown. A certain celebration took place 50 miles away and an old steam engine train passed by our hometown. On the way back people were gathered by the tracks to look at that locomotive. It wasn't a Big Boy but nonetheless it was a steam engine train it wasn't pulling many cars. It had a mournful whistle sound similar to this train on the video. As it blew the whistle it was making it's presence known on the railroad on the outskirts of Corpus Christi, Tx. It was making it's way back to either Victoria or San Antonio, Tx. Those vintage trains are a site to behold and I'm glad I got to see one of them.
I love being able to both see. And capture video of these things!!! They are absolutely mesmerizing!!!
Mournful steam whistles echoing at night in the distance are the stuff of legend -- oft referenced in song and story -- the loneliest sound in the world!
That horn is a beauty, if i could put that on my car. Heeeeeeey. What a beautiful sound, never get sick of it.
I was in Martinez, CA when 4-8-4 4449 passed through, sometime in the 80's. The ground shook and I could feel the whistle in my bones. Imagine what it's like to be close to the 4014 when it passes by!
there is something about the pitch of that steam whistle vs the horns on a diesel electric
Демон, а не паровоз
@@maxfly7429 lol, indeed!
Like the Old Milwaukee commercial says,it don't get any better than this, great history and it's alive,🚂👍😀
Big boy 4014 is the king of all steam locomotives
Wow those people were way too close😳
Mesquite, TX should get this blessing. It would draw a beautiful crowd. Count my "yes" vote.
Worth the drive to the closest place it passes to see it!!
It looked like we were about to see some Darwin Awards handed out - posthumously, of course.
Most are...
Bill nicely captured it was really moving, amazing people standing very close 🚂
They definitely should not have been that close!!
@@BillsRandomStuff You’re smart
@@captainminecraft631 Right! I wasn't standing right hy the track!
The one dude basically got blown off his feet when it went by. Who thinks it's cool to stand that close to 1.2 million lbs of rolling steel? SMH
It's not like you're going to get a better photo by standing so close.
Steam engines' Era was Majestic. Wish long long life to Big Boy. Live on and keep going.
Reminds me of Six Flags. Sweet memories.
I like seeing the guy who wisely decided to step away a couple of more feet from the track 🙂
Great video, watched it three times (will do it again). A small steamer went through our town years ago, I just happened to be at the crossing, its horn was, well, steamy (like a whistle). But its rapid chuga, chuga, chuga, was impressive- probably doing 40 mph. The smoke pouring out of the stack was the icing on the cake. These trains are works of art and beautiful to behold, if you have the opportunity. Thanks
Glad ya enjoyed!!
It is a whistle, not a horn
Check my channel for other videos of Big Boy and a few other steamers!!
I love the sound of a steam engine!! Thanks for sharing this and I am sure the spectators enjoyed it as well 😀
Why does that get me choked up and teary eyed?
Thanks for this. It so reminds me of when I was a boy, watching the trains with my dad from one of the bridges that connected Boston’s old South End to Chinatown (before the Mass Pike), seeing the telltale plume of smoke rush closer and closer and then in one breathtaking instant you’d be enveloped in an acrid cloud of coal smoke with an incredible roaring, chuffing, magnificent monster rumbling along under your feet. Nothing else like it, still unforgettably etched in my memory nearly seven decades later.
Big boy is really a big boss superb sweet capture with fabulous timing and filming
It's like seeing and hearing some kind of primeval Beast awoken from It's long slumber. Walking the Earth again and calling to its kin, not knowing She the last of her kind.
THAT is spectacular!
Watched with my Grandson when 4014 came through Waukegan Il between Milwaukee to Chicago, to Aurora to The West, memorable.
What a buety. That being said, how stupid must you be to wait till the last second to move away. You guys are giving that engineer anxiety.
So cool!! The power!! Just love the sound of that horn! 😍 😎 If I see that someday I'll die a happier woman!
There's something about those old steam locomotives people can't seem to get enough of. I once rode on an sightseeing excursion, as a guest of my friend's dad who was the engineer. Every small town we hit, people would come out and video or take pictures. We stopped in one mountain town and were treated like rock stars...
Hearing our grandparents talk about it is one thing, seeing and hearing it is like being enveloped by the past
I've had the pleasure of taking an excursion on two so far, Not this train... but others (there are videos posted on my channel)... This one does very limited excursions... definitely a bucket list trip!!!!!
What a fine sounding steam engine.
Impressive on a breath of steam, would be good to see/hear her working hard.
In 1958 my grandfather who was a locomotive engineer brought me down to the CV (Central Vermont) yard one cold night in January to see the last steam locomotive in use, and that was being retired… it was a small anthracite burner with an auger fed firebox it also had a fully glazed enclosed cab with wooden framed multi pane doors… an indelible memory.
It was tiny compared to this monster.
That was awesome! Thanks for posting that.
A true thing of beauty.
Great to see the ol' steamy hard at work......again.
BIG BOY 4014 : The King of the Tracks!
Great video. Too bad people feel they have to get that close. 25 feet back is close enough. 1 person learned that lesson the hard way,, with 844 a couple years ago taking pictures. I'm sure Ed had the pucker factor going.
Yup.... I don't know why folks do that... were it just sitting there, sure, I'd want to get close too... but not rolling like that!
@@BillsRandomStuff Yeah if you're standing on the ballast rock you're to close. If for no other reason than I've seen springs from the rail cars laying along the tracks. Which means they fly out somewhere. Mechanical stuff breaks and wrong place, wrong time stuff does happen.
@@garygsp3 dont forget the steam discharges that occur regularly as well, one of these days someone is going to catch a body full of that superheated steam and then try to sue the railroad for it
@@CapStar362 Those two on the right definitely got a facefull of something that indicated the error of their thinking.
@@spikespa5208 doubtful, but close. Maybe some hot air and the air-curtain wake itself, but nothing worthy of what I'm indicating could happen. Which one day, IS going to happen and then a lot of things are going to be ruined for us with common sense.
i reviewed the footage frame by frame in DSR Up-scaled 4K on a 60" TV.
They were turning away right as the forward guide wheels passed them, and no visible steam actually reached out that far. Close........
Simply majestic! I went to Brockport State and a train track ran close to my freshman dorm. At 11:00 every night a train ran through & we knew it was time to go to bed.
Wow! I lived in Cheyenne and remember the big boys pulling the pass to Laramie, WY
Definitely need to see it in the mountains sometime!!
@@BillsRandomStuff Yep that's what they were built for!
So awesome to see this thing running again
Despite it pulling just some passenger cars and a generator - so almost nothing compared to its days of duty, despite it running in front of a safety diesel (I know it's a necessity), it is great to see this gem of a steam loco moving again on it's own.
Love it, and simply ignore the videographers close to the track!
:-))
Magnificent! I remember Lying in bed on summer nights, windows open, listening to the summer insects and hearing the whistle of the steam engine as it passed the crossing about 2 miles away. Wonderful wistful memories.
Got a few other steamers on my channel if you get a notion to hear more!!
Just plain awesome!
I would take the Long Island Railroad to work every morning. The 4:55am. When you’re standing at the track you must look for the train.
You cannot hear it coming. The sound is behind the train. It can surprise you if you don’t pay attention.
That is what I'd say Fxxxing awesome. Brilliant footage. And I love the people at track side getting their good shots too. Thanks for sharing this good footage
Those folks on the right side of the train are idiots! You don't stand that close to #4014 when she's rollin' that fast!
Yup!!
If I'm not mistaken, it's illegal to be that close to the tracks.
They definitely should not be.... but hey, I'm not the one that is that close! So not my problem!! LOL
You don’t stand that close to a train PERIOD (unless you have a death wish or something). They stick out a couple feet on each side.
As I recall, a woman was hit by one of the UP steam engines not long ago doing the very same thing. Not smart.
No one wants to see that happen.
I’ve seen one in person. It was absolutely amazing to see, hear and feel that monster go by.
I saw this one in person!! LOL
@@johnnichol9412 Nice! They’re not really a common sight in NJ.
Isn't he a beauty?????!!!!! Love that whistle blow!!!! Would love to see it in person!!!!!
It is absolutely amazing up close!!! You can FEEL that whistle through your core!! Glad you enjoyed! Check my channel for more!!
@@BillsRandomStuff My husband was a train fanatic and he LOVED the Big Boy!!!! His Grandfather and my Grandfather both retired from the railroad....in the steam days!!! Me, I love the steam engines!!!!!!!!! Thank you for sharing with us train lovers!!!!!!
Fantastic video! Thanks a lot for showing.
Greets from Germany Peter
I love the old steam locomotives, they need to bring them back in service
That's heavy metal thunder right there 😉
Big Boy! Just got to love it.
A thing of historic beauty!
I wish we could go back to those days!
The strength of that whistle says big boy could pull an ice train through hell on the fourth of july!
The most powerful 4884 ever! That sucker could do the job of 3 or 4 modern diesel locos!
Definitely feel the "umph" from that sucker as it goes by!!
Used to stand on the bridge above Queen St Station, Glasgow 🏴 and get smothered in smoke - and the noise was awesome 🚂😎
The shots from the guys cam on track level should be awesome too. Thanks for sharing.
Weekend Stuff
That was truly “far out!” Wish I was there.
Big boy rules the world , 540 tons
As much as it would be tempting, I'd never stand that close to the track when Big Boy thunders by, the crew was probably thinking some uncharitable thoughts too.
They definitely are too close....
The track splits two types of railfans, the foamers on one side standing stupidly close to the tracks and the railfans watching from a distance.
Dam just how I remember them as a kid .
Great shot…👍👍
People in foreground near tracks need their heads examined. All kinds of stuff loosens and falls off. 🤠
What an excellent machine. My grandfather was an engineer on just such a beast.
Love the pure muscle, nice vid
I rode steam train,,,
at NEW HOPE,PA.
many times,,60ies
and 70ies,,!! goes
from New Hope to
Ivyland,NJ,,!!
Cool shot!!
Give me steam or give me death!!
Goosebumps!!
Really cool. Thanks.
Thanks! Glad you enjoy! See my channel for more of Big Boy... and others!!
I love those sceanic observation cars.
I do miss seeing Bigboy all the time at Holliday Park !
nothing beats classic steam horns!
Twenty-five Big Boys were built exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad, the first of which was delivered in 1941. The locomotives were 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds.
Thanks ! Great footage and sound. It's pulling very well as if the train wasn't behind it.👍👍😊
that's because it's not pulling at all. This is so much UP smoke and mirrors, but no steam.
That is twice you have made that statement. How about some data to back up your assertion?
@@3RTracing Actually... Bug Boy IS pulling the train under its own power... It was HOT that day, that's why you do not see the steam... it mixes in with the exhaust from the stack. On a cold day, however, the steam is VERY visible! See my channel for video of just such an occurrence. The diesel locomotive in the consist is there for braking, PTC, limited assist in certain areas and in case Big Boy breaks down to move it off an active line to a safe area out of the way. I was there.... you can FEEL the power this thing throws out!!!
The worst part is It is really pulling that little train as if nothing was behind it. The Big Boy was ment to pull miles long coal cars out in the plains and up the passes in the rocky mountains. So for the Big Boy that passanger train is nothing.
Yes, we all know what it was designed to pull and did do very well, but this was a special train.
One of the finest sights was UP3985 pulling 102 freight cars up Archer hill at 30 mph a few years ago.It would be very nice to see UP 4014 doing the same .It's up to UP 🤔
"Express coming through!"
Like they say at McDonalds.......I'm lovin it!
People are just plain stupid standing that close to the tracks! Big Boy isn’t some Prius running down the tracks.
It amazes me that none of them have gotten squished...... Personally, I like to keep my distance....
It also drives the engineers blood pressure up...
My thoughts exactly. Sure, you want “that shot”, but for cryin out loud, GET BACK! I think the whistle was the engineer saying get the f$!k back!!!!
My personal rule is to stand where ther ballast starts
Joe Biden told them it was an electric Big Boy
Magnificent piece of machinery.
Great angle!
That whistle sounds like 10,000 tortured souls escaping from hell. Thanks for posting such a great shot of 4014! Cheers all.
Damm, that’s better that watching a B 747 take off. Had to play back four times.
