Contains spoilers on what I believe to be Season 4 Part 4? Since I watched the whole thing Me, sadly I don't really have a good excuse, but I hate him, or rather maybe resent him and haven't forgiven him (since I've been on the side of the MCs from ep 1) Just like I've never forgiven Annie and Bertolt (at least he died, I wish the others did too) and later down the line Pieck and Zeke as well. I soaked those first 2 seasons into my brain telling myself there's nothing they could do or show later that would make me forgive them and I stayed by that. I was watching the show hoping those 5 would all die eventually and in the end when I learned 3 of them would not only survive but get to grow old, it felt a sour taste in my mouth I understand that our beloved MCs are no better, but the way they went so hard on poor humans who didn't know shit, I just couldn't get past it I understand that I'm talking about it as if it isn't a show but actually happened, but that's just how immersed I was in the show. He’s a tragic yet fantastically written character and his parallels with Eren Yeager are so inspired. I love how he gradually begins to understand what Eren meant when he says you and I are the same in the final arc Isayama’s writing is truly genius
Yes I totally agree, I’ve seen people still trash him in s4 when he gets stomped by Jean. Its like their minds are still in s2 “you killed Marco” type of thinking lmao. But honestly one of the more interesting and tragic characters in AOT. What a masterpiece.

It's always painful when you love a character, go to the fandom, and see that people don't like him 👁👁 He's so fascinating, especially his mental state. Man has PTSD or sum.
Reiner is my fave character in this series by far. He's uncomfortably relatable, and as someone trying to enlist in the military, I can relate to his feelings of just not being good enough. I'm afraid I won't be the right guy for whatever task I'm given. He doesn't quit, though, he just keeps going. He's got true grit.
In my opinion, hating Reiner (at this point in the story) is kind of childish. Once we learn about the history of Marley, and how Eldians are treated outside of the walls, all of Reiners actions make sense. I think most people would make the same decisions he did if they were in his shoes. If most of us spent our entire lives being indoctrinated and mistreated, and we had one opportunity to “break out of it” and build a better life for ourselves and our families, we would do it. He does make mortally questionable choices but so do many other characters. His story is bleak and he’s a misunderstood character.
There is one thing to fight blindly after you get brain wash by propaganda without the change to know the people you fight beforehand. Reiner live with this people understand them as their friend, They should understand even if they successfully get founding titan by eating it , Marley just gonna feed whoever it that founding titan to the next candidate, nothing will change Eldian still gonna be enslave by Marley. Remember they have 6 out of 9 Titan if they joint forces with Paradis Island, they can all work together freeing Eldian in Marley.
What I love about reiner is that despite all his issues and his worst moments like when he was going to commit suicide he still chose to keep living for his loved ones. And Its ironic how despite being the worst of the warriors he proved marley wrong. When they wanted to strip of the armor he gave them the middle finger by achieving victory in all the battles he faced during the war without any losses.( that's what I read in the manga) yeah he's not perfect but he makes the most of his abilities. And during the scene when he confessed about Marcos death, instead of being a coward and let annie take the fall he came clean, imagine telling the people that probably still hate your guts it was you who killed their friend. And instead of blaming anyone else he said it was all him, he called the shots, it was all his fault. He's not afraid to speak the cold hard truth even if he's hated for it. Yeah he's not the best fighter or the best at planning things but he fights, winning or losing that's all he does is fight, like during his battle with eren, no matter what he endured he kept coming like a raging bull, punched, stabbed, torn apart by rocks he kept on pushing even when everyones counting him out before the fight even ended. And as for the loser part. That's no the words I'd use and about how it the armored was given to him out of pity? Reiner proved himself worthy when he proved all of Marley wrong during the 4 year war after constantly winning victories after victory in battles.
Ah yes. Let's all hate Reiner. The guy who admitted to all the horrible stuff he committed on Paradis (taking down the walls, killing Marco, led to Porco's brother accidental death, etc) and had really bad depression, PTSD and even personality disorder for years but let's all "forgive" Annie for psychopathly murdering everyone (most of the Survey Corps) and going into crystallization for years only to return to psychopathly murdering everyone again to which she felt no regret about and would do it again since she's "daddy's precious girl". No wonder most people I've talked to say she's one of the most unredeemable AOT characters apart from King Fritz and the guy who fed Grisha's sister to the dogs.
Honestly, I don’t think Reiner should be blamed for his actions on Paradis. He was a child soldier, brainwashed for his entire life, and by the battle of shiganshina, he was still just a kid (albeit a teenager) with no real choice but to try to get home. He made all the wrong choices, but all of those choices were forced by fear of death or harm coming to his family
The problem is that once a child signed up to be one (in Paradis' case), or was made to become one (in Marley's case) you would be held just as responsible as an adult. So in both places they were expecting 6-18 years old to think and act and have the responsibilities as an adult once they were in their armed forces (with Marley being the worse of the two).
It's pretty funny really Reiner is in a way a mirror of Eren, he's kinda what you expected Eren to turn out like, having a conscience in the end, however what makes the story so great is that Eren who we wanted to win, kept going to the point of destruction. It's what makes the story so great, we as an audience did not get what we wanted or expected.
I think that "Human-Titan punching bag" Reiner's suicidal tendencies started showing up back in Season 2 (before he blew his and Burrito's (Bertholdt's) cover). After saving Connie from that one titan he tried to jump out a window multi stories up with said titan and had to be stopped by both Connie and Bert. I also think that when he suggested rescuing Annie to Zeke (which resulted in him being Zeke's punching bag), and when he and "Birth Control" (lol) was force to battle by Zeke (which resulted in him being a punching bag for Eren, Levi, Mikaaa, etc., lol), he was planning in each case to sacrifice himself while making sure the other "warriors" made it home (and delivering Ymir note to Historia). (On a related note I think in scolding Bert, he tried to give his best friend an out to save himself. We see were THAT when, but that's for another post.) I wouldn't be surprised if he, in the back of his mind, during Marley's attack on Paradis (HIS idea made so he can rescue Gabi and Falco) he was trying to figure out a way off himself as well as Eren and Zeke before the battle was over. ** It makes sense considering by the beginning of Season 4: * He not only blamed himself for killing Marco, but also the SOLE reason Marco's dead. (Uh, yeah, MAIN REASON definitely, but Reiner, you had accomplices. Circumstances or not, "Burro" and Annie are nor completely innocent of this.) * He also believed he was the SOLE reason for Marcel's death - not helped by Annie, and later Porco (and possibly Zeke, Pieck and Ymir too) telling him it was all him fault. (Uh, as this video said that was a freak accident. Even if anyone was to blame for that, which there wasn't, Reiner wouldn't be the only one since Annie and Bert was there too. Also Marcel would share in that by getting himself in that mess too. Btw, Ymir would still be blameless as she was a pure titan.) * He blamed himself SOLELY for Bert's death. (Ugh, hey Punching Bag weren't you *FOLLOWING ZEKE'S ORDERS, MAKING HIM THE MAIN ONE RESPONSIBLE* on the warriors side? Also Burrito got himself in that mess, and wasn't Pieck there too?) * And he blamed himself for what happened to Annie. (Again, it's true he's the main one responsible, but neither Annie nor "Bobble-Head" were innocent victims.) And I wouldn't be surprised if, before meeting with the other members of the alliance, he was told about what happened to Sasha (by Connie and Armin), and what happened to Colt (by Gabi and Falco), he then stupidly tried to apologized for the death's of Sasha (THAT WAS ON YOUR EQUALITY DUMB COUSIN MORON), Colt, Porco, and possibly Burtoro to Annie, and got double jump-kicked by Annie, decked by both Connie and Armin (Armin's punch would feel like air thought lol), and (because their confused on why is he apologizing want him to snap out of it) got double stomach tackled by both Gabi and Falco. ** AND Mini-SPOILERS (hint) for Anime only's: (Don't read onward if you don't want the hint.) Don't think he's done with trying to find a way to off himself. Pay close attention of "Part 3" in a year. Manga readers know tell unless asked please.
Ok Marco's death potentially was the only right decision for Reiner...not easy and for sure, not desired but they were spies in Paradis. He couldn't let them being revealed and Marco was very sharp.
Reiner has always been an intriguing character to me, and in some ways, was created to be Eren's opposite. Reiner has probably the weakest resolve out of everyone in the show, whereas Eren probably has the strongest. Reiner let Marley brainwash him, whereas Eren made every decision by his own will in the end. Reiner wants to die and just be done with his life, but he can't find death. Eren wants to live a long and happy life with his friends, yet ultimately chose a path he knew would end with his own death. Both these characters dreams and goals came crashing down on them when reality exposed them as impossible. Yet Reiner only broke down further, whereas Eren grew more determined. It's the reason why I think Reiner always lost to Eren. Eren's resolve, determination, will to win, in spite of everything that happened to him, was always stronger than Reiner's. Because Eren adapted, evolved, learned, and even though the core of his personality never changed, he learned how to view things differently, accept reality for what it was, and move forward accordingly. Reiner couldn't do that, and that's why I think, that even though Eren and Reiner are both broken and vulnerable characters, Eren is portrayed as someone who is unshakable, and we finally get to see Reiner for the weak person he really is.
Until season 4 he was just intresting to me, just like Annie and Bertold, why do all this? what is the bigger picture? Then came season 4 and I realized this guy is my absolute favourite of the series. One of the most human characters of media in general.

I think he's the most pitied character. I'm not sure how anyone can make it through season 4 and still hate Reiner. The man is barely holding onto his sanity due to immense guilt and shame for his actions.

Reiner was constantly holding a burden, and both him and bertholt found out how normal and human those of paradis island are... Imagine being stuck between abandoning your family and put their lives at risk by going AWOL, or saving your family by having to murder hundreds of thousands of unknowing innocent people... while still not knowing the fate of your family too well in the process.
Reiner is far from a good or bad person. He is, much like most other characters in this series, a product of a bad society and childish dreams of heroism. He is a victim of manipulation from his mother, who deep down, wants to use him as a means to earn a more honorable life. A victim of indoctrination, spouting outdated propaganda because it was his only way of feeling validated. A product of a boy without fatherhood present in his life, seeking the admiration of every single outlet he could - desiring to be *the* guy instead of Reiner Braun. Whether it was his warrior side, that desperately wanted Marley's approval and thus forced him into a regurgitating spout of needless military bullshit, or his soldier side, painting him in the light of Marcel, even though he knows deep down he'll only ever be a shell of what Marcel was for his group. Neither are him. So his only path is breaking free of seeking validation in his life, and being prepared to die for a cause greater than himself - only then will he feel true worthiness instead of suffering for the sake of different masses,
This might be unrelated to the video but I finally watched fruit basket prelude the origin of tohru’s parents and how they fall in love and while the film was great we really didn’t need a recap .I’m hoping you see it because it’s definitely interesting/odd
Reiner is actually my favourite character in all of aot, from his backstory to how he ended up was truly tragic. One scene that made me really empathize with him was early on when Marco died, the way he switched so quick and the consequenses that living 2 seperate lives had on him was horrible…
Hating Reiner between season 1-3 is totally understandable, he betrayed his friends and tried to kill a whole island, but is season 4 he's just... done. Literally, he was moments away from killing himself, and it was hard to hate someone who just loses in everything. I mean seriously, when has Reiner every really won in AOT?
When he became Humanity's Shield during the Rumbling and was allowed to live a long life after Mikasa killed Eren to purge Ymir's curse from the world. That's when he won.
He’s my favorite character in the show, and one of my favorite characters in general. He’s almost an antithesis to eren. One of the most fleshed out, but also one of the most tragic. He could never catch a break.

Upon a rewatch, I did find Reiner and Eren to be two halves of a whole. Eren is right- they both think they are doing the right thing (infiltrating a foreign country in order to destroy it and free their people). Reiner was, in a way, acting out of slightly more noble intentions. He was living in occupation and had crappy parents, but he finds a way to overcome the self-hatred. He doesn't act out of revenge, is much more sympathetic to children, and feels actual guilt. I hope he found peace in the epilogue.
Reiner has a split personality. One is of a warrior of Marley, the other is of a soldier of Paradis. He is two-faced. This is even evident on the Armored Titan. Whenever Reiner and Eren fight, half of his armored face always seems to be broken off. One side is armored, the other side is not.
I never hated Reiner or Bert. Because I had started to not like Annie because it was seemingly out of nowhere. But when she crystallized herself and we saw those flashbacks, I knew there was more to her than being a cold hearted killer. They depicted her trauma so well through that. Then when I found out Annie was part of a team with Reiner and Bert, then the reveal of those two. How scared Bert looked before that badass transformation and Reiner's whole 'piece of shit' part. I knew they had been put up to it or they felt they had no choice essentially. Sure I was like wtf traitors! Lmao but I never hated them. Then when Season 4 happened and it explained everything, I felt even worse for them. I can't believe Reiner is so hated though! That's just wild post Season 4 Part 1.

Even after Marco's death he still manage (in spirit) to bring people together and had them talk. Marco is quite a important character in the series.

I think that "Human-Titan punching bag" Reiner's suicidal tendencies started showing up back in Season 2 (before he blew his and Burrito's (Bertholdt's) cover). After saving Connie from that one titan he tried to jump out a window multi stories up with said titan and had to be stopped by both Connie and Bert. I also think that when he suggested rescuing Annie to Zeke (which resulted in him being Zeke's punching bag), and when he and "Birth Control" (lol) was force to battle by Zeke (which resulted in him being a punching bag for Eren, Levi, Mikaaa, etc., lol), he was planning in each case to sacrifice himself while making sure the other "warriors" made it home (and delivering Ymir note to Historia). (On a related note I think in scolding Bert, he tried to give his best friend an out to save himself. We see were THAT when, but that's for another post.) I wouldn't be surprised if he, in the back of his mind, during Marley's attack on Paradis (HIS idea made so he can rescue Gabi and Falco) he was trying to figure out a way off himself as well as Eren and Zeke before the battle was over. **
It makes sense considering by the beginning of Season 4:
* He not only blamed himself for killing Marco, but also the SOLE reason Marco's dead. (Uh, yeah, MAIN REASON definitely, but Reiner, you had accomplices. Circumstances or not, "Burro" and Annie are nor completely innocent of this.)
* He also believed he was the SOLE reason for Marcel's death - not helped by Annie, and later Porco (and possibly Zeke, Pieck and Ymir too) telling him it was all him fault. (Uh, as this video said that was a freak accident. Even if anyone was to blame for that, which there wasn't, Reiner wouldn't be the only one since Annie and Bert was there too. Also Marcel would share in that by getting himself in that mess too. Btw, Ymir would still be blameless as she was a pure titan.)
* He blamed himself SOLELY for Bert's death. (Ugh, hey Punching Bag weren't you *FOLLOWING ZEKE'S ORDERS, MAKING HIM THE MAIN ONE RESPONSIBLE* on the warriors side? Also Burrito got himself in that mess, and wasn't Pieck there too?)
* And he blamed himself for what happened to Annie. (Again, it's true he's the main one responsible, but neither Annie nor "Bobble-Head" were innocent victims.)
And I wouldn't be surprised if, before meeting with the other members of the alliance, he was told about what happened to Sasha (by Connie and Armin), and what happened to Colt (by Gabi and Falco), he then stupidly tried to apologized for the death's of Sasha (THAT WAS ON YOUR EQUALITY DUMB COUSIN MORON), Colt, Porco, and possibly Burtoro to Annie, and got double jump-kicked by Annie, decked by both Connie and Armin (Armin's punch would feel like air thought lol), and (because their confused on why is he apologizing want him to snap out of it) got double stomach tackled by both Gabi and Falco.

Ok Marco's death potentially was the only right decision for Reiner...not easy and for sure, not desired but they were spies in Paradis. He couldn't let them being revealed and Marco was very sharp.
Reiner has always been an intriguing character to me, and in some ways, was created to be Eren's opposite. Reiner has probably the weakest resolve out of everyone in the show, whereas Eren probably has the strongest. Reiner let Marley brainwash him, whereas Eren made every decision by his own will in the end. Reiner wants to die and just be done with his life, but he can't find death. Eren wants to live a long and happy life with his friends, yet ultimately chose a path he knew would end with his own death. Both these characters dreams and goals came crashing down on them when reality exposed them as impossible. Yet Reiner only broke down further, whereas Eren grew more determined. It's the reason why I think Reiner always lost to Eren. Eren's resolve, determination, will to win, in spite of everything that happened to him, was always stronger than Reiner's. Because Eren adapted, evolved, learned, and even though the core of his personality never changed, he learned how to view things differently, accept reality for what it was, and move forward accordingly. Reiner couldn't do that, and that's why I think, that even though Eren and Reiner are both broken and vulnerable characters, Eren is portrayed as someone who is unshakable, and we finally get to see Reiner for the weak person he really is.
Until season 4 he was just intresting to me, just like Annie and Bertold, why do all this? what is the bigger picture? Then came season 4 and I realized this guy is my absolute favourite of the series. One of the most human characters of media in general.

I think he's the most pitied character. I'm not sure how anyone can make it through season 4 and still hate Reiner. The man is barely holding onto his sanity due to immense guilt and shame for his actions.

Imagine being stuck between abandoning your family and put their lives at risk by going AWOL, or saving your family by having to murder hundreds of thousands of unknowing innocent people... while still not knowing the fate of your family too well in the process.
Reiner is also Isayama's favorite, as he is mine, followed closely by Erwin.

Reiner is far from a good or bad person. He is, much like most other characters in this series, a product of a bad society and childish dreams of heroism. He is a victim of manipulation from his mother, who deep down, wants to use him as a means to earn a more honorable life. A victim of indoctrination, spouting outdated propaganda because it was his only way of feeling validated. A product of a boy without fatherhood present in his life, seeking the admiration of every single outlet he could - desiring to be *the* guy instead of Reiner Braun. Whether it was his warrior side, that desperately wanted Marley's approval and thus forced him into a regurgitating spout of needless military bullshit, or his soldier side, painting him in the light of Marcel, even though he knows deep down he'll only ever be a shell of what Marcel was for his group. Neither are him.
So his only path is breaking free of seeking validation in his life, and being prepared to die for a cause greater than himself - only then will he feel true worthiness instead of suffering for the sake of different masses,
This might be unrelated to the video but I finally watched fruit basket prelude the origin of tohru’s parents and how they fall in love and while the film was great we really didn’t need a recap .I’m hoping you see it because it’s definitely interesting/odd

Reiner is actually my favourite character in all of aot, from his backstory to how he ended up was truly tragic. One scene that made me really empathize with him was early on when Marco died, the way he switched so quick and the consequenses that living 2 seperate lives had on him was horrible…

Hating Reiner between season 1-3 is totally understandable, he betrayed his friends and tried to kill a whole island, but is season 4 he's just... done. Literally, he was moments away from killing himself, and it was hard to hate someone who just loses in everything. I mean seriously, when has Reiner every really won in AOT?
When he became Humanity's Shield during the Rumbling and was allowed to live a long life after Mikasa killed Eren to purge Ymir's curse from the world.
That's when he won.

Literally the only reason I hate him is because he makes the fatal mistake of attempting to flirt with Historia whilst also not being Ymir and I’m a yumihisu shipper
Upon a rewatch, I did find Reiner and Eren to be two halves of a whole. Eren is right- they both think they are doing the right thing (infiltrating a foreign country in order to destroy it and free their people). Reiner was, in a way, acting out of slightly more noble intentions. He was living in occupation and had crappy parents, but he finds a way to overcome the self-hatred. He doesn't act out of revenge, is much more sympathetic to children, and feels actual guilt. I hope he found peace in the epilogue.
Reiner has a split personality. One is of a warrior of Marley, the other is of a soldier of Paradis. He is two-faced.
This is even evident on the Armored Titan. Whenever Reiner and Eren fight, half of his armored face always seems to be broken off. One side is armored, the other side is not.
I never hated Reiner or Bert. Because I had started to not like Annie because it was seemingly out of nowhere. But when she crystallized herself and we saw those flashbacks, I knew there was more to her than being a cold hearted killer. They depicted her trauma so well through that. Then when I found out Annie was part of a team with Reiner and Bert, then the reveal of those two. How scared Bert looked before that badass transformation and Reiner's whole 'piece of shit' part. I knew they had been put up to it or they felt they had no choice essentially. Sure I was like wtf traitors! Lmao but I never hated them. Then when Season 4 happened and it explained everything, I felt even worse for them.
