I believe he's a traitor of the highest order, and someone that is blinded by delusions of morality, self pity, and plain stupidity. He's not as bad as Zeke, but he's just as vile for betraying people that genuinely care for him, for the sake of a useless mother that treats him as a token, a nation that despises him, and a people without calibre or any value. There's nothing much to admire about Reiner, just trash that outlived his usefulness. I can understand his loyalty to Marley when he's a child. But as he grew older? No sympathy left for me to traitors.
It’s one of the better written characters of the story, i really enjoyed his development through the chapters. How ever i cannot not mention the infamous “moved my conscience to my balls” episode. And like many other alike moments in the story only left a sour taste. He was just about victim of the war state Marley was. Gladly at the end kind of found peace.
I liked his character a lot, he was my second favourite but the Ymir from seasons 1 and 2 will always be my favourite character. Reiner had such an interesting reveal about his mind in season 2 and I loved it. I do agree with AldrianCG’s dislike of the “moved my consciousness to the rest of my body” but overall his character was so interesting. I mostly feel bad for him because of the intense brainwashing and indoctrination he experienced in his childhood to hate Eldians and worship Marley, and seeing him in season 4 was depressing with how he lost the will to live. I am glad he could repair the relationships with his friends and with his mom. I just cannot get over the fact that he literally has the plot armour titan, he nearly died 5-6 times across the serious if not more. Seriously, isayama didn’t have to put Reiner into so many life threatening situations, and for him to survive every time was a bit absurd for me especially in season 3 and 4. TLDR I like him and he was a great character but there are a few plot issues surrounding him, but it doesn’t ruin who he is but rather the situations he is in.
Reiner has always been legitimately tragic to me. As well as Annie, and Bert. Of course none of what I'm saying excuses what they did. They still made the individual choices they did. But they were all just kids. I can't help but imagine that Reiner, Bert, and Annie could have lived fuller and better lives if they weren't forced into the military as children. Its so heartbreaking.
Kinda hard to blame them when they were just children who spent their whole lives being emotionally abused, fully believed marleyan devil propaganda about how they were saving the world and knew that if any of them disobeyed and refused to commit mass murder them and their families would be turned to titans and killed in the battlefield. I mean what reason did they have to not do what they did besides sparing the lives of the paradisian inhuman monsters who they believed deserved to die anyway (and should I add who they blamed for destroying the lives of them and their people because they had the same blood)?
I still hold Annie less guilty because she never tried to make excuses or sugarcoat things, and she wanted to abort the mission , and tried to take whatever chances she could get to run away.
they were all brainwashed, so they didn't deserve to die and it's not their fault however Paradis deserved to live more than them I was still happy to see Paradis winning and I was still rooting for them even if the warriors losing was a bit sad
Reiner knew Eren was the last person who should have the power of the coordinate. He said so. He recognized in Eren what he saw in himself. They both started their journey at opposite ends of some spectrum. They met in the middle, and then they both kept going until they found themselves where the other one started.
Reiner went from being big bro in the beginning, to crazy bastard, to moon knight to tramua soldier who was still a soldier fighting for people who wanted him dead. Man it sucks to be him because you saw what he went through and can't help but feel sympathy. It's about to be a decade since the dub of season 1 came on toonami, man good times.
Man, to think Reiner was basically considered a side character but had enough development in the series to be like a secondary main protagonist like Eren's trio. Guy just wanted to be like a hero wanting a better life for his family and the way he felt so much guilt since the incident at Paradis showed he's not just some villain we saw him back in season 2. He's definitely my favorite.

One of the most compelling characters in fiction. Started as a big bro who was sometimes comic relief, comes out that he was the enemy from the start, makes a lot of us hate him and want him destroyed, then makes us fully understand his story and empathize/pity him, then he finally becomes a true hero at the end. The fact that he wants to die but isn’t allowed to is a stroke of genius from Isayama. He has to live and suffer with what he did but still move forward towards peace.
There is a reason he is the best character in Attack on Titan, and one of my favorite characters in any media ever. His entire story, his fall, his redemption, his introspection, his guilt, his atonement, and how in the end he’s alive and happy striving to bring peace to the world. Just a fucking masterfully written and amazing character. Also, when his mom validates him and finally sees the error in her ways in the finale, I bawled my eyes out. Such a fucking awesome moment.

It's like seeing all the ill-informed choices you made when you were young and confused about the world, but there's still hope that you can push forward and do better. Not for recognition and validation, but because you know it needs to be done. You are Reinough!
It's interesting how both Eren and Reiner have opposite kind of parents, yet ended up in parallel. One is all embracing, the other always putting a condition on her love. It's nature versus nurture, but they're both dominated by self hatred that pushes them to move forward to justify their crimes.

Maturing is realising that Reiner isn't a failure as a Warrior. The Marleyan military and the Paradis mission are complete failures. Grown-ass men gave children Titans, plonked them on Paradis and expected them to bring back the Founder. This disastrous leadership failed the Warriors themselves, the nation of Marley and the entire world. Reiner and the Alliance are the only reason why any of humanity survive the Rumbling at all. Who's really the 'failure' here?
Tbf to Marley, the children obliterated a country practically by themselves so it makes sense the adults in charge sent them alone. Taking into account the fact that they incorrectly assumed the technology of paradise would be centuries behind, it makes their decision seem less ignorant.

I absolutely love Reiner. No other character in media to me has shown so many different facets and nuances of war, culture and the strain of existential uncertainty
Reiner was always my favorite character even before I knew he was the armored because he was strong but still was one of the few people who respected Eren's determination early on and supported him. Even after finding out who he was, you later learn about his troubled past like his delusional mother and trash deadbeat father. He's also the only person from Marley who's truly remorseful for what he's done, which really showed when he almost killed himself, unlike Annie and Bertholt.
Um, Berthold died too soon to put this burden on him. It seems a bit unfair to judge him when he didn't have those 4 years to reflect like Reiner did. Annie, however, had a great deal of time to see that she did wrong, but told Hitch that she would have done what she did all over again. She had no growth whatsoever. She should have had to be held accountable just like Reiner

What i love about Reiner's character is how he believed he would gain everything as a child only to find his own destruction, how he fell from grace to kick and claw his way out of hell and become the man he wanted to be. Who knew going into the show that, someday, this man would become both the catalyst for so much pain and misery, but also a fan favorite despite it? Isayama truly is a GOAT.
I took a break from AOT when I was waiting for the final season to air so it's been a long time. I always liked Reiner and was kinda sad that he ended up being a villain because I was sure he would be killed off. Then I heard that he is Hajime Isayama's favorite AOT character, aside from Jean. Oh boy, I had no idea how epic he'd be at the end. And in the end, Annie, Reiner, and Pieck get a second chance at normal lives once the Titan powers are gone. And the scene where Connie asks Reiner if this is what it felt like to betray them and also the scene where Jean forgives Reiner are some of the most powerful scenes in my opinion. In those moments I realized "whoa, everything that's happened built up to these meaningful conversations." Absolutely incredible. And the thing is, even though Reiner betrayed them, they still have that bond from the time they were in the Scouts together. In the end, they all fight to achieve the same goal. It was so epic to see them working together. Never thought I'd see it happen, but I did.
god i love reiner. He’s so well fleshed out, so complex, and such a good foil for eren that it’s insane. I love watching every minuscule detail knowing what i know now, I’m definitely going to rewatch the show after a couple analysis videos. I think it’s so great seeing him hold some understanding over eren, both when he states it himself as ‘I think I know what he’s going through’ or something of the like when they’re on the flying boat after hange’s sacrifice, and when he says that eren is the last person that should hold such a power, because he’s right. He’s right and he sees himself in those boots because he and eren really are so similar, and watching him go through a lot of the remorse that we don’t see (as much of) with other characters really puts into perspective all that this war really had done to humanity, and how it effected each pawn in the game.
By far the best character in aot. And I absolutely love that he survives, not because I like him, but because its "hopefully tragic" or "tragically hopeful", I dont know.... just love it.
Reiner has always been my favourite character in AOT. I always loved his protector's vibe. I thought his character was so well written, best development in my eyes. His resolve in his mission, and then guilt and psychological state showing us his duality, leading to his redemption and complete devotion to stopping the Rumbling and the Hallucigenia... If he had one bit of this resolve before, he would have wiped out Eren when he was still only the attack titan. Best AOT character ever and he should defo get more love from fans!!
Reiner has always been my favorite character in the show. Even during the whole battle to retake the wall, I was still rooting for him to love. His story from start to finish was honestly one of the best in the show. He wanted to die and give up so badly, yet in the end, he didn't and fought till the very end. Him still being alive by the end of the show is honestly the most unexpected thing about the anime.
I think i misinterpreted idea is that eren has a selfish goal. In fact he is a slave to Ymir’s desires As the first episodes title implies It’s no coincidence that eren sees humanity trapped in a pen. Thr exact inclosure Ymir frees some pigs from There is no motivation or manifestation in erens own life. As eren says , he didn’t always feel like he was trapped It was the dream To you, from 2000 years ago
Reiner has always been my favorite character, i truly relate to him in such a deep way through my own childhood and his identity crisis, I spent years upon years pretending to be someone who I wasn't, denying my identity of being a trans woman. I see him in my old self how I carried myself, looked for every chance to run while still trying my best to be the "hero" to my loved ones and friends all while doing bad things to them and those around me. It was my fault but I was going against my nature for so long I just broke. I see him in everything I was and everything I was trying to be at the time. before I broke out of my identity I ran away traveled 1000 miles and fully assumed this fake version of myself and I couldnt keep it up for very long, being near people who only knew me as my facade my mask my fake identity and eventually it all shattered and I saw myself for who I truly was, a good person someone trying their hardest someone who is selfish but would do anything for adoration but I would never received the adoration I deserved unless I let the facade shatter and allowed myself to blossom into who I truly was inside.
Reiner really struggled with so much looking back. The growth though to put everything thing aside and keep moving forward took guts and so much character
I think its also worth pointing out that Marcel got Reiner to be the armored to “protect his brother.” Sure, Marcel wasn’t malicious in his intentions. But for all intents and purposes, Reiner was the one who was “supposed” to die, and not Porco. Even if it meant Marcel died too. I’m sure, in his own mind, Reiner was a replacement, meant to die so someone else could live. And yet, the one who “condemned” him to this fate sacrificed himself so that Reiner could live. The paradox of worth must have been ravaging Reiner, for nearly 10 years at least.

a soldier is a monster with a cause and people to protect. but that cause is not always morally righteous. reiner killed because he sought positive affirmation and killed and betrayed the people who gave it to him for the hope his family and marlians would give it to him instead. for a soldier to kill they need a motive that justifies taking a life. for some its serving their country, some the weapons, some just like the idea of killing, and there are those who kill to be loved like reiner. but the last group will always question how much blood did it take and was it worth it?

I've had a hard time choosing a favorite character in AOT, Many of the main characters like Mikasa, Armin, Eren, Levi, etc are characters i'm not a fan of, But Reiner is an exception, He's a character that has intrigued me since the beginning, He's just a likeable cool guy with complex and fascinating growth
The brilliant way it juxtaposes the two different eldian groups. The one behind the walls that are protected and free And the ones that are slaves to Marley without walls So where did history get fractured???? How did king Fritz line become the false king with the founding titan residing with the reiss family. It’s even said that it was king Fritz that created the rule to never goto war But I think there’s a lot of killing and brutality that was waged over the ownership of the founding titan.
Although Connie is my favorite character, I understand Reiner, Annie, Bertholt & the warriors. They were in a bad situation with an even worse demand on their lives. Still, Reiner KNEW everything Marley said was a lie. They lived with these people and knew for a fact that they were not a threat. I still don't believ
When Reiner broke the walls he didn't know the truth, even when he did eventually learn the truth there was nothing they could do that wouldn't get not themselves killed but their families will suffer the consequences for their failure back home.
As soon as he told eren the truth nothing but hate however , before that I was a fan of him strong buff scout , a role model , then the rest of the show came , amazing character real life trauma and guilt great video and speculation.
what if Eren desperately wants to absolve his foil Reiner for being the victim of "environment and history" (Eren's own words) so that he (Eren) himself might find a scrap of self-forgiveness?
I think Luke being op isn’t a bad thing at all. He’s the villain so him being very powerful helps to up the tension. As long as they explain why he don’t do surtían stuff
If you feel like you've done wrong. You should apologize. Even if everyone thinks you did nothing wrong, you clearly feel like you've done something you shouldn't have. And the other person does too. You don't have to feed into them. But you should own up to it and move on with yourself. Sometimes asking/offering forgiveness isn't about being right. But about wanting to acknowledge any wrongs being dealt, and wanting to do right.

god i love reiner. He’s so well fleshed out, so complex, and such a good foil for eren that it’s insane. I love watching every minuscule detail knowing what i know now, I’m definitely going to rewatch the show after a couple analysis videos. I think it’s so great seeing him hold some understanding over eren, both when he states it himself as ‘I think I know what he’s going through’ or something of the like when they’re on the flying boat after hange’s sacrifice, and when he says that eren is the last person that should hold such a power, because he’s right. He’s right and he sees himself in those boots because he and eren really are so similar, and watching him go through a lot of the remorse that we don’t see (as much of) with other characters really puts into perspective all that this war really had done to humanity, and how it effected each pawn in the game.
I always look forward to Sage’s Rain video’s. One of my favorite channels, always so insightful. ❤
By far the best character in aot. And I absolutely love that he survives, not because I like him, but because its "hopefully tragic" or "tragically hopeful", I dont know.... just love it.
Reiner is literally a walking, breathing embodiment of imposter syndrome.

I love Reiner analysis
Reiner has always been my favourite character in AOT. I always loved his protector's vibe. I thought his character was so well written, best development in my eyes. His resolve in his mission, and then guilt and psychological state showing us his duality, leading to his redemption and complete devotion to stopping the Rumbling and the Hallucigenia... If he had one bit of this resolve before, he would have wiped out Eren when he was still only the attack titan. Best AOT character ever and he should defo get more love from fans!!

Reiner is my favorite character. Always has been, even from day one.
Reiner has always been my favorite character in the show. Even during the whole battle to retake the wall, I was still rooting for him to love. His story from start to finish was honestly one of the best in the show. He wanted to die and give up so badly, yet in the end, he didn't and fought till the very end. Him still being alive by the end of the show is honestly the most unexpected thing about the anime.
In another universe, Reiner would have been the main character of the story.
I think i misinterpreted idea is that eren has a selfish goal.

Reiner has always been my favorite character, i truly relate to him in such a deep way through my own childhood and his identity crisis, I spent years upon years pretending to be someone who I wasn't, denying my identity of being a trans woman. I see him in my old self how I carried myself, looked for every chance to run while still trying my best to be the "hero" to my loved ones and friends all while doing bad things to them and those around me. It was my fault but I was going against my nature for so long I just broke. I see him in everything I was and everything I was trying to be at the time. before I broke out of my identity I ran away traveled 1000 miles and fully assumed this fake version of myself and I couldnt keep it up for very long, being near people who only knew me as my facade my mask my fake identity and eventually it all shattered and I saw myself for who I truly was, a good person someone trying their hardest someone who is selfish but would do anything for adoration but I would never received the adoration I deserved unless I let the facade shatter and allowed myself to blossom into who I truly was inside.

Reiner really struggled with so much looking back.
The growth though to put everything thing aside and keep moving forward took guts and so much character
I think its also worth pointing out that Marcel got Reiner to be the armored to “protect his brother.” Sure, Marcel wasn’t malicious in his intentions. But for all intents and purposes, Reiner was the one who was “supposed” to die, and not Porco. Even if it meant Marcel died too. I’m sure, in his own mind, Reiner was a replacement, meant to die so someone else could live. And yet, the one who “condemned” him to this fate sacrificed himself so that Reiner could live. The paradox of worth must have been ravaging Reiner, for nearly 10 years at least.

a soldier is a monster with a cause and people to protect. but that cause is not always morally righteous. reiner killed because he sought positive affirmation and killed and betrayed the people who gave it to him for the hope his family and marlians would give it to him instead.
for a soldier to kill they need a motive that justifies taking a life. for some its serving their country, some the weapons, some just like the idea of killing, and there are those who kill to be loved like reiner. but the last group will always question how much blood did it take and was it worth it?

Although Connie is my favorite character, I understand Reiner, Annie, Bertholt & the warriors. They were in a bad situation with an even worse demand on their lives. Still, Reiner KNEW everything Marley said was a lie. They lived with these people and knew for a fact that they were not a threat. I still don't believ
When Reiner broke the walls he didn't know the truth, even when he did eventually learn the truth there was nothing they could do that wouldn't get not themselves killed but their families will suffer the consequences for their failure back home.
As soon as he told eren the truth nothing but hate however , before that I was a fan of him strong buff scout , a role model , then the rest of the show came , amazing character real life trauma and guilt great video and speculation.
what if Eren desperately wants to absolve his foil Reiner for being the victim of "environment and history" (Eren's own words) so that he (Eren) himself might find a scrap of self-forgiveness?

If you feel like you've done wrong.
You should apologize. Even if everyone thinks you did nothing wrong, you clearly feel like you've done something you shouldn't have. And the other person does too. You don't have to feed into them. But you should own up to it and move on with yourself.
Sometimes asking/offering forgiveness isn't about being right. But about wanting to acknowledge any wrongs being dealt, and wanting to do right.
