Everyone always says that about dead musicians, imagine if they were still alive today? They would still be doing the same thing. Eddie Van Halen hasn't changed since 1978, Eric Clapton doing the same shit he did in the 60's. Angus, Page, Vai, Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde all the same. Your style is your style. Yes you do progress but historically the most innovative years are in the beginning of their careers. Cliff wasn't even that good, adequate better describes him. Check out Brian Beller. He plays metal, jazz fusion anything, he's incredible and still not the best. Check out Victor Whooten

@@thehonkening1 okay you clearly think you're much smarter than you actually are or you just have a very basic understanding of the english language, so I'll explain this simply. Lund is metaphorically stating that Cliff knew Orion better than any of the other musicians in Metallica by saying that he knew the lyrics. This, of course, is not literally applicable because Orion had no lyrics. However, it's generally assumed that if one knows the lyrics to a song, they understand it better. Thus by stating that Cliff knows the lyrics to Orion, it's a *metaphorical* way of saying he understood the song better than anyone else, since he cannot literally know the lyrics to a song with no lyrics.

      M. X. Music has no rules. If you don’t believe that, then you aren’t a musician. ”Breaking rules” is usually what makes things memorable, just like this solo. This is not the average solo, not just with the tone and melody, but also the performance, everyone has a different ear for music, and I personally like this solo more than a bunch of Kirk solos. Making insults towards people for not liking the same stuff you like is very childish. And also, cliff, at that time was arguably much ”better” than Kirk. He had been training for years, 6 hours a day before joining metallica, and even while still in metallica. So stop making childish arguments when you get mad.

If he continued with the same personality he was at his twenties, I'd reckon Metallica would not have become a frontline band, but stayed at tops in the middle league. Musically different, sure.
