There’s a comment Todd in the Shadows once made about a theory he has about two types of pop stars. There are the ones who’d always have a loyal following who’ll scoop the next song or release up and have a strong cult of personality (ones like Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, and more recent musicians like The Weeknd, Harry Styles, and Billie Eilish). And then there are the ones who are dependent on the success of their hit songs, and who go away once their hits dry up (ones like Paula Abdul, Nelly, Robin Thicke, Charlie Puth, Iggy Azalea, and so on). Shawn Mendes seems like the second tier of that, as his popularity has significantly waned now that he hasn’t had as many big hits.
Also, speaking of Todd, it’s funny Shawn talks about his connection with Camila Cabello so much. Both he and Camila seem to have released their TrainWreckords this year, as both this new Shawn album and Camila’s C,XOXO could qualify for that.
To be fair, I don't think Robin Thicke and Charlie Puth fit in either category; Robin was mainly an RNB artist pre-Blurred Lines and he ruined that by cheating on his wife [his RNB fans loved their relationship while the Blurred Lines fans didn't care about that] and Charlie never really had big stans like that; he was just a radio artist, despite having some good songs in that lane.

You can say he's a basic white guy with poor songwriting skills - but I applaud him for being simple & not taking jabs at people in his music. I love Shawn Mendes.
3:19 i think we all know what is the burden he has been carrying within him that conflictuates him so much, the thing you allude to afterwards, but he's afraid of fully owning it this late after all these years of denying it, i don't blame him, it must be hard af
It’s not a BAD album, per se. I just thought the album was incredibly boring. I do appreciate the effort to try something newish. Pretty sure he has said in some interviews he just wants to do his own thing & that’s completely okay. If anything, I’m rooting for him !! But the fact of the matter for ME is that it’s still kind of boring & bland project throughout 🤷🏻♂️ just my opinions though.
I feel like he was trying to do his version of folklore with the aesthetic also being black and white in the woods. It may have benefited him if it was a surprise album. The way it was announced felt like it should have been. But it was announced months in advance and then there was the extra month delay which was pointless. His PR team were not ready for the October release and did the bare minimum with Heart of Gold. PR and label aside, I don’t think he was trying to please anyone, he made this album for himself. Probably the most so out of his whole discography. Is it as good as Wonder? Probably not, but that album was full of bops which had potential to be singles and also deserved better. He needed to make this album to heal after taking such a long time off, cancelling the tour, the break up, losing his childhood friend, whatever the earth Lyle the Crocodile was and the current scrutiny he’s now getting from Sabrina/Camila’s fans. I hope he doesn’t take the performance of it too seriously.
Shawn should have been a runaway supermodel…he got the height, face, body, charisma, confidence…but his voice is just above average but he is sweet and kind guy…
I like his newest album a lot. I never really vibed with a lot of his music because even though they're fun, they just felt like average pop songs. His something big era was his best for me imo.
Usually, anyone who becomes world-famous or consistently relevant as an artist, be it singing, or acting, has something unique about them that catches the eye of the average audience. Shawn doesn't have that. I am sure he's a decent dude, but he has the "cute college batchmate who also happens to sing a couple songs", that kind of energy.
i was a huge fan especially of his very first works and very first album. the lyricism at that age and training was so nice to see. around mercy and post that is when i started losing interest but his vocals have been so damn nice always. i wish he had more solid works given his skills rather than being known for his shenanigans outside of music. missing the potential artistry we could've have gotten. ruin, imagination, life of the party, stiches are such beautiful, precious works
What annoys me about Shawn is how much he has played on his sexuality this era, it doesn't feel genuine, everybody has the right to discover their sexual identity and own it but recently Shawn has seemed to queerbait a lot, like the interviews with him saying he has shirtless pics of guys saved to his phone... Nobody who was "still learning about their sexuality" and not wanting to talk too much about it would have said that in an interview
honestly the only shawn mendes song i can stand on multiple repeats is piece of you, even if they used to play it at my retail job. that beat is just raunchy enough for his singing, he should be doing more of that than whatever else he's doing now.
His voice when he first started was very interesting to hear, but the repetitive song writing he does and lack depth is hard to ignore. Why does he kept repeating the same words over and over again over the same beats over and over again? Is it even that hard to not repeat words and change the beats ever so slightly, to bring more depth and story?? It's basically the minimum
I think he should pull a *Katy Perry* at this point & come out with a song titled *I Kissed A Boy* just to break the ice & get people talking about him again 🤷🏼♂️
This is so on point, i always liked shawn but the last few years or projects i kinda had to force myself to listen to his songs to support him, i couldn't really pin point it, but its true, he tries too hard. Its impressive with your mentioned examples, Justin Bieber and Harry Styles they are the perfect examples of they just do it for themselves and in such an unbothered way, its a lot more authentic and no matter if they do a lot of promo or none at all, they'll both still be successful because of it, no matter which method they chose.
I love Shawn. That said, I feel like he's genuinely struggling with himself these last few years. I won't be surprised if he comes out in the next 5 years. He's genuinely struggling to feel like he can be himself and not be a tabloid magnet. But underneath that struggle is a guy who's really genuinely got a lot worth showing up for.
I genuinely always found Shawn Mendes boring. Just a white boy with a guitar with good but unremarkable vocals and music. Ed Sheeran is also a white boy with a guitar but a lot of his music actually makes you feel something, it’s the combination of his sweet vocals and beautiful lyrics. Shawn doesn’t have that, there’s nothing interesting about him.
I’ve been saying this for years, probably since Shawn’s debut back in 2014-2015 - his songs never excited me for some reason. I thought his voice was kinda whiny and nasaly, especially on that song Stitches which was just so big at the time but I absolutely hated. Over the years, I’ve come to develop an admiration for the improvement in Shawn’s vocal ability and genuinely loved a couple of singles like When You’re Gone. That was the song that really got me sold on his vocal chops, but for some reason I still didn’t feel the urge to get sucked into the rest of his music. I think this video kind of summed it up and put into words what I didn’t quite know how to say - Shawn is a great vocalist and musician but his music just doesn’t excite or intrigue. I don’t mean this in a nasty way at all, as a pop star he’s clearly made it and is wildly successful. I think he has a lovely voice and seems like a genuine down to earth person despite his massive worldwide fame. I’m just not excited by him as an artiste but it’s great to see he’s still putting out music and finding his voice
The only good thing that keeps him goin is that he’s an attractive man, and that keeps his fans goin. I don’t have any song of his on my phone. I have not liked any. But yeah he’s only good looking in my opinion.
Harry Styles’ popularity is built on the foundation of being in a famous boy band, his good looks, charismatic personality, and energetic concert performances. He is not an impressive strong versatile vocal talent. Harry and his team have been extremely successful at marketing his strong points. It will be interesting to see how Harry evolves and improves in this the future.

So his rebranding into being Bi -curious but straight ain’t gonna win him more mainstream success. We got a full gay and harry already did the Bi stuff . 🤷🏽♀️ Shawn needs to hang up flat screen. He moment has passed now . He’s a Katy Perry
@@donjai9366😂😂😂
You can say he's a basic white guy with poor songwriting skills - but I applaud him for being simple & not taking jabs at people in his music. I love Shawn Mendes.
I’m rooting for Shawn Mendes, i feel like well see him get bigger eventually. Here’s hoping!
Same!!
why would you issue that someone gains weight he looks very good as he is.
@@againstthepods4316 is this a serious comment…. they meant bigger in the industry not fatter
@@againstthepods4316 lol, I meant as he being an artist, not his weight. He would be beautiful in any weight. You made me laugh! What a troll
HELP 😭@@againstthepods4316
"his music is boring"
My mom already said that in 2015 after listening to Stitches and seems people eventually catched up 😂
Man I always forget he got his start on UA-cam haha
I thought it was vine
@ something like that
3:19 i think we all know what is the burden he has been carrying within him that conflictuates him so much, the thing you allude to afterwards, but he's afraid of fully owning it this late after all these years of denying it, i don't blame him, it must be hard af
The problem in shawn is that he doesn't found his sound yet still in wanting to live in lies more than being truthful.
Justin Bieber is definitely a try hard he was begging and low-key punishing fans for not playing his music enough 😂 like damn 😭
If I was Shawn, this review would have broken me. Ouch.
It’s not giving Cher-(His career and fashion)
He's signed to Island Records and they horribly promoted him
Sabrina was ROASTING him in short 'n sweet. Honestly, you can feel her anger under the laugh.
I like him as a human but as an artist, he’s Yawn Mendes 😔
He was pretty handsome back in 2015-2019.
he's John Mayer in a wig ...
Hes a flavorless chicken
He’s just soooo safe .
"and I promise the mushrooms aren't changing your life" [comment engagement 💜]
I truly forget his existence until someone brings him up every now and then..
and girl, NOT TASTE BY SABRI BRI PLAYNG AT THE END, LOL
i was a huge fan especially of his very first works and very first album. the lyricism at that age and training was so nice to see. around mercy and post that is when i started losing interest but his vocals have been so damn nice always. i wish he had more solid works given his skills rather than being known for his shenanigans outside of music. missing the potential artistry we could've have gotten. ruin, imagination, life of the party, stiches are such beautiful, precious works
I think if Shawn embraces his 💅 side, he probably will be more authentic and interesting which may translate into his music.
I have always known his name but ask me if I can name one song and I would be like.... 😬
Hi Honest can you make a video on George Michael and his impact on the music industry similar to a documentary.
I think he should pull a *Katy Perry* at this point & come out with a song titled *I Kissed A Boy* just to break the ice & get people talking about him again 🤷🏼♂️
Another BANGER shady outro instrumental 🥹
The only song I know from him is Señorita 🤷🏻♂️
I genuinely always found Shawn Mendes boring. Just a white boy with a guitar with good but unremarkable vocals and music. Ed Sheeran is also a white boy with a guitar but a lot of his music actually makes you feel something, it’s the combination of his sweet vocals and beautiful lyrics. Shawn doesn’t have that, there’s nothing interesting about him.
I think Lost in Japan was Shawn at his peak, imo
I really like your voice
Great channel 🖤
it feels like the album still needs to be finished
YES D’ANGELO GO OFF
im only listening cus I hear supermodel by sza in the back
I knew you were gonna bring up Dumb and Poetic. ☺️
Shawn Mendes was never going to stick around.
That was obvious from early on.
His days as a main pop boy are done I feel.
The songs are a bit short.
I’ve always felt he wasn’t a musician but was playing the role of a musician😂 a bad tv movie at that.
If Ed Sheeran couldn’t make his guitar songs stick with this new age of music.. idk why Shawn thought he would
ive never been this early lol I love your channel! been following you since 2018
This is exactly what I said about Chloe’s debut album.
The gays tore him to shreds thirsting over him. 😭
media really wants to bully this man, if it's not his sexuality, its the music... then Liam Payne happens, and everyone sobs fake tears
I gotta say this is his first album I could really appreciate, but yeah he’s vanilla
Lmao im so glad everyone caught the shade with the outro music 😂😂
The only good thing that keeps him goin is that he’s an attractive man, and that keeps his fans goin. I don’t have any song of his on my phone. I have not liked any. But yeah he’s only good looking in my opinion.
Harry Styles’ popularity is built on the foundation of being in a famous boy band, his good looks, charismatic personality, and energetic concert performances. He is not an impressive strong versatile vocal talent. Harry and his team have been extremely successful at marketing his strong points. It will be interesting to see how Harry evolves and improves in this the future.
we know exactly what he's running from.
Can we get a video on FLO they are a great group underrated and drop an amazing album!
Why why why for me is his best tracks in years. The video too is just fun
