Something I wasn't a fan of was the album cover for 143, since it feels too reminiscent of "Smile." Otherwise, I like 143 a little better. "Smile" was great, but familiar, while 143 sounds like it has newer sounds for her.
Smile was the last album of hers that I really liked. I tried listening to this new album today and the songs are just so boring, no spectacular vocals, very empty and vapid imo. The production is also horrible.
I feel like even if smile underperformed she could’ve pushed more with that sound because I feel like it would be more successful for this comeback since she gained much more favor with her residency and the initial hype of her announcing a new album.
It just upsets me thinking about how good this comeback COULD’VE been. She had all the materials for a skyrocket. We could’ve been saying this is her return to pop. The theme and visuals are crazy. ALL she had to do was work with ANYONE else, get with Bonnie Mckee, and just put SOME soul into the record. It didn’t even have to be monumental. This fumble will be studied for years.

P!nk is a legend 😭 I might be biased cause her music got me through the hardest days of my teenage, but Katy's music doesn't have that unique effect. She's good for throwbacks but her old music / messages are outdated. So in a way Katy is forgettable but Pink isn't.
Pink was able to navigate through the early 2000s starting out as just r&b but she really got famous during pop rock and being herself I thinks that's she's had alot of staying power because she's authentic

Six (I think we need to include "Part of Me", even though it was on the "Deluxe" version. Kanye's "E.T." remix also came out after the original album's release). I think that the Universal Music Group (UMG) CEO in 2013 (Steve Barnett) made this much clear in the lead up for "Witness". After Capitol/EMI merged into Universal following the former's bankruptcy, Barnett still noted that "Prism" was a priority for Capitol and, by extension, UMG, despite it being unlikely to score the same string of #1 hits as the "Teenage Dream" era. To be fair, I think even a reception akin to "Prism" would have been seen as a triumph of sorts. "Teenage Dream" was simply a "lightning in a bottle moment" that would be difficult to recapture again.

One Of The Boys is Katy’s best album. Almost every song on it is memorable. I was amazing fangirl of Katy in that era and her unreleased songs for One of the boys are really good lyrically. I don’t know why she didn’t lean more into the pop/rock original music after Teenage Dream. Like be happy you had this incredible album in Teenage dream but I feel like she has kept trying to replicate that success instead of staying true to her roots.

@@perfectallycromulent actually you’ll be surprised that most countries listen to western media. Mariah Carey and many western artists are very popular in Europe, Japan, Brazil, China, U.K. and Philippines
I feel like Katy Perry is making music for what she thinks people will like or what she thinks would be a hit. She doesn’t have that care free spirit in her music anymore.
The whole political purposeful pop bs was never authentic to her. She just doesn't come off as someone who has an interesting perspective to share when it comes to social or political issues, her strengths were always in her more fun and mischiveous songs like I Kissed A Girl. In fact, the only songs I've heard from her that I actually felt some emotional depth are Thinking of You and The One That Got Away. It was ironic that she was the one making Chained to The Rythym, a song about pop music being a drug to numb us from the world, when she's the embodiment of that kind of pop music - and that's ok. It's ok to just be campy and fun, Sabrina Carpenter's newest album proves that, she kinda reminds me of Katy Perry from One of The Boys and I could totally picture her singing something like Ur So Gay (that song would get her so cancelled if it came out today, still funny tho lol) or Hot n' Cold. Even if songs like Peacock aren't exactly groundbreaking, they were still funny and had some personality.
At least Witness and Smile had some gems like Harleys in Hawai or Chained to the Rhythm, but 143? Lazy and hampered by the controversies. Katy can't hold a candle to Mariah btw
It's obvious that Bonnie McKee is the reason why her music doesn't hit the same. If you listen to the Hot City, you can tell that she was the backbone behind her hits NOT Dr Luke
She was born at the right time lol. At her peak, from the late 2000s to early 2010s, she was definitely one of the "it" girls of pop. Her music never really seemed to change though. And I don't think her being a mean person has anything to do with her fallout because plenty of the pop girlies are just as controversial if not more, yet they are more successful than ever. I think it's more of a talent thing. She never changed with the times.
Yeah, I also think there’s something lame about being 40 years old with lyrics that sound like they were written for you at 21. There should be so much more you have to say about life by now
I think Katy would be great if she had more records that were more R&B influenced pop… like Harleys in Hawaii. It’s something you don’t get from her too often and it still suits.
Katy having the audacity to call Mariah Carey a throwback act is so hilarious to me. She doesn't have a fraction of Mariah's career and is now irrelevant in every way. Meanwhile, Mariah goes number one every year and is as relevant as ever. Also, she has shaded Britney and Taylor so many times, which shows how genuinely problematic she is. It’s not just an act; she really seems delusional and doesn't show respect to people who paved the way for numerous artists including herself...
She sabotaged herself and her own career by sh*tting on other female artists but wants us to think she’s a “feminist” now (it’s honestly laughable to say the least) 😂😂😂😂
I have seen many people talk about this album but you have summed up perfectly. "Dead upon arrival" Like damn....but as a Katy Perry superfan, I couldn't agree more.
Her music has sounded soulless and bland to me since Roar. She had enough of a alternative edge in her first two albums that made her then fun personality show, plus most of the hooks were razor sharp. Even on ballads like The One That Got Away
I HATED ROAR and felt so gaslit when it got almost Teenage Dream level success. You want me to believe that TD’s “As you shoot across the sky, baby you’re a firework” is the same as “you’re gonna hear me ro-o-o-ar, oh wo oh oh oh oh”

I only like a few songs off of Witness and Smile. But Katy's new music seems lazy. I mean, Doja Cat had a hit with "Say So" despite working with Dr. Luke. But put aside the situation with Dr. Luke. Katy's new songs sound terrible! Again, it just seems lazy. Like she was rushing to put out an album. And being away too long by doing American Idol did not help.
The excuse for many of the new artist working with Dr.Luke is they are "new", many of them don't have a lot of choice. In Doja's case, she signed a contract w Dr.Luke before the Kesha scandal broke out so she was kinda obligated to work with him. Doja stopped working with Dr.Luke on her latest album... While Katy actively choose to work with him. Katy is seasoned, she has the option to work with other producer.
@@criminalmindsgirl2936 dr p*ke Is nowhere near hot pink nor did he produce Say So. He only produced Need To Know from Planet Her. And Doja doesnt even want to work w him..She was forced for that One Song. Hes nowhere on Scarlet either.
I love one of the boys so much! It's Katy's best album in my opinion since it's poprock: she shines in this area the most with her voice. The album also had a lot to offer since it was campy like Hot n Cold but not in a bad way. I really like her songwriting on that album too, she has even written songs on her own on One of the boys.
Is this my favorite Katy Perry album? No. However, I won't lie and say I didn't like this album. The other two she has done before, I did not care for because she is not made to be some sort of a socially conscious pop artist. The main issue I have with the album release is the lineup for the singles. It would have been more talked about if she didn't put Woman's World on the album and let it be the first single.
Madonna actually had two comebacks - the first was mid-90's Betime Stories - which not only contains some great Pop/RMB/Electronica, but it also contains one of her biggest #1's, Take A Bow. Confessions on a Dance Floor was her second come back - but I really think it might not count, because the only time people ACTUALLY wondered if she was over was after Erotica (of course, music she did otherwise around this time still charted well and even went #1, so perhaps that thought was stupid then too and really just the haters speaking loud). I really don't think people expected one weak album to sink Madonna, they figured another one would be around soon enough the right the ship since she had weathered worse before.
To be fair to the situation, there is a reason that people call "Confessions" one of her greatest triumphs. I *love* "American Life" and I think the political songs especially have tragically aged really, really well (which is a bit depressing to think about, honestly), but it was more than just a flop. She had to pull the original music video for the AL single because she and her family were receiving death threats. Even at the height of the "Erotica" backlash, her singles were still getting radio play. Many American stations vowed to never play her again during the backlash to "American Life", and some have actually kept that promise to this day. America is the only country in the world where "Confessions"'s biggest single, "Hung Up", didn't hit number one, and that is partly the reason why. She's done well for herself overall remaining relevant and keeping herself in the conversation as legacy pop royalty, but the only song since "4 Minutes" that's really made an impact on the radio was "Ghosttown" because it managed to chart well on the adult contemporary charts. Radio stations during her "Rebel Heart" era bragged about refusing to play her music. I think sometimes people really forget how much "American Life" hurt her, even though most people love the original uncensored music video and its razor sharp anti-war messaging now.
Bedtime Stories and COADF is definitely one of my favorite album's from her! You can maybe kinda say "Chromatica" by Lady Gaga was also a comeback, as she had 2 no.1 hits (which she never had since 2011, and mostly top 10s) While the album era still fell off due to COVID and some other stuff (like the tour being in 2022, and then ending earky because of technical issues). That album was her return dance music after her considered "flop "ARTPOP", her jazz album collab with Tony Bennett, and her country/rock/americana influenced "Joanne". While Katy didn't follow suit with either Madonna nor Gaga, just made a boring basic dance poo record.
@@mattjastrzeb1724It kinda was, it was definitely kinda difficult. Erotica had r&b influences, but Bedtime Stories really lifted that up! As a lot of of defining 90s r&b producers were credited on there (one of them even did a electronica track, which was the title track) . Human Nature also literally talks about what happened during the SEX book and 5th album era.
We’re writing her off too quick. Mentions of Madonna, Mariah and Cher’s triumphant comebacks, they had 2 decades of a career behind them, and Cher 4 or 5 decades of a career. I’m not keen on her new stuff, but she’s creative and talented enough with global recognition that it’ll only take 1 hit for her to be celebrated again.
I think the worst part of all this is that songs got leaked that were apparently going to be the next album which got scrapped which was a return to pop rock… and she did this instead
Tbh she’s always been boring and stiff. Music is based on the fan base & I literally haven’t met a ‘Katy Kat’ ever. The fact that she’s working with DR Luke on this album literally after everything we just saw is career suicide.

I asked AI to generate song lyrics based on Katy Perry's Prism album and that's what I got in a few seconds. The writing isn't worse than on her new album and it took around ten different people to write some of her songs: (Verse 1) I was lost, but now I see the light, Like a spark that cuts through the night. Free as the wind on the open sea, I’m holding on 'cause I know who I’m meant to be. (Pre-Chorus) I feel the power rising inside, Like a fire that will never die. Everything I need is here within, I’m ready now, let the change begin. (Chorus) I’m shining, I’m burning like a star, No holding back, I’ll go near, I’ll go far. Through every storm, through every fight, I’ll dance in the chaos and find my light. (Bridge) The shadows fade, but I stand tall, There’s a rainbow after the fall. I’m holding on, I’m ready to rise, Nothing can stop me, this is my time.
When Swish Swish came out, her It Girl status was stripped away from her. Honestly, that's a term for me. Like when Camilla released "I Love It" that was her Swish Swish.
The album sounded like it would be on a debut artist ep or first album . Like the songs didn’t sound like Katy . the songs sound like they would be sung by any other popstar who would release it as a single just for radio play and commercial play . The album didn’t seem like any evolution it just sounded like she was trying to hard to cater to the young kids and keep up with the new pop girls
Controversy aside and being a lamb I'd say songs like Lifetimes is okay I'm his He's mine is great And Gorgeous is also great But the rest are forgettable.
Its a failure.. And I call fear.. She lost a lot of ground with Witness and Smile, and desperately wanted to remind us of what made her huge..her Teenager Dream.. Which in itself is another reason why it failed...this album reminds me of the loser lover you dumped and said lover trying all of his/her old tricks to win you back.. it's about moving forward in life, and not looking back..
To paraphrase one of my favorite movies (The Fly), "Katy Perry's an adult who dreamt she was a teen and loved it, but now the dream is over, and the adult is awake."
Hard pill to swallow but constructive. So sad to see but true, in her interviews she seems so dependent on other people’s opinions. But I really hope she brings it back I know she got it
I don’t think a producer that works with Olivia Rodrigo and Chappelle Roan - two artists that have very CLEAR artistic perspectives and voices of their own - could work with a more surface-level pop star like Katy Perry.
Micheal Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, Prince were artist that continued to push the boundaries & evolved as artist. Katy Perry has so much potential to be a better artist but continues to make the most bland & generic sounding music.
Katy, Gaga and Kesha were the girls back in the late 2000’s and 2010’s! Lady Gaga was the creative and wacky ideas and has her controversial moments. But nowadays we consider her an icon. I haven’t listened much to Kesha in a while but she’s doing great and definitely has bangers! Now with Katy, she was EVERYWHERE along with the other girls. But I think with Witness, she was trying to be a little serious. It’s not that it’s a bad thing to want to be serious and talk about things but I don’t she has anything to say. Like what does this Katy Perry have to say?? From Roar that was released way back in 2014 to a whole decade later what does this Katy want to tell us? She should’ve released I’m his, he’s mine first. In my opinion. I haven’t listened to the able yet but it’s a shame she a gone so far down. I think she’s missing her spark. What made Katy special was her passion and the fire she had. I hope she goes back to drawing board and maybe get rid of Dr Luke. She’s stuck in 2014 with a mix of 2017… it’s KATY PERRY!! She made some of the list iconic songs of the 2010’s. With Dark Horse, Teenage Dream, California Girls and many others. She wants to make a hit and she’s trying too hard to fit in. She should maybe revert back to the pop rock sound.
I'm His and His Mine, Wonder, and Artificial are the best songs in the album.. honestly, she could make an EP album with those three songs and it will be a good renaissance era for her
Never Really Over worked because it was a re-work of Love You Like That by Dagny, who is massive in the Nordics. The best song on this album is Wonder, written by? Norwegians. Clearly she sounds best with the Scandi pop style and they should have leaned more into that.

I still prefer her previous album Smile, yeah it wasn't consistent but Tucked and Cry about it later had more energy than any of the songs on 143.
Something I wasn't a fan of was the album cover for 143, since it feels too reminiscent of "Smile." Otherwise, I like 143 a little better. "Smile" was great, but familiar, while 143 sounds like it has newer sounds for her.
Agreed everyone sleeps on Harley’s in Hawaii as well though!
Smile was the last album of hers that I really liked. I tried listening to this new album today and the songs are just so boring, no spectacular vocals, very empty and vapid imo. The production is also horrible.
Smile had harleys in Hawaii, Daisies was pretty good, then title track smile had a gospel flair that I enjoyed.
This new album is just disappointing.
Feel like she just doesn’t care much anymore.. the album was doomed from the start due to you know whose involvement, but she’s capable of so much more. Just seems like the effort and interest wasn’t there
She wanted it so bad she’s just not that creative

Katy is the epitome of "I was rooting for you, we were all rooting for you, HOW DARE YOU" 😂
At least Witness and Smile had some gems like Harleys in Hawai or Chained to the Rhythm, but 143? Lazy and hampered by the controversies. Katy can't hold a candle to Mariah btw

It's obvious that Bonnie McKee is the reason why her music doesn't hit the same. If you listen to the Hot City, you can tell that she was the backbone behind her hits NOT Dr Luke
This! Bonnie passes the vibe check
There should be so much more you have to say about life by now
It's the stunted growth.
@@maloneaquaI think her record label pursued her in that direction. A lot of times artists don't have creative control.

I thought she would lean into the Harleys in Hawaii vibe on at least one of her 143 songs. She could’ve done more on Artificial too.

The thing with the other artists that worked with Dr. Luke is that they are not as seasoned as Katy, most of them are just starting to get recognition

The album also had a lot to offer since it was campy like Hot n Cold but not in a bad way. I really like her songwriting on that album too, she has even written songs on her own on One of the boys.
Real
Is this my favorite Katy Perry album? No. However, I won't lie and say I didn't like this album. The other two she has done before, I did not care for because she is not made to be some sort of a socially conscious pop artist. The main issue I have with the album release is the lineup for the singles. It would have been more talked about if she didn't put Woman's World on the album and let it be the first single.
Hi honest
hi
@@xBINARYGODx yes. Don't forget that MADAME X was also a return to form!
Bedtime Stories was not her comeback. Ray of light was her big comeback
Bedtime Stories and COADF is definitely one of my favorite album's from her! You can maybe kinda say "Chromatica" by Lady Gaga was also a comeback, as she had 2 no.1 hits (which she never had since 2011, and mostly top 10s)
While the album era still fell off due to COVID and some other stuff (like the tour being in 2022, and then ending earky because of technical issues).

Generic!
I mean Teenage Dream was her best work.

Everything I need is here within,

No holding back, I’ll go near, I’ll go far.
Through every storm, through every fight,
