It's a persuasive argument for investing in a very capable electric car that can do the daily commute and long distance road trips too. Very forward thinking. Long live the European road trip!

Wow very impressive
I made 700 miles from Wigan to Aberdeen, I spend 4,5 hours there to watch a football match and back with a 5 yo BMW i3 42Kwh in 23 hours. The conditions were worse by far than these, with temps below 0C, very strong winds up to 60 mph, heavy rain, four heavy adults (over 100kg each, I am 135) and a big dog. Our speed was at the speed limit always, never got the foot from the pedal to save power, lights were always on and the A/C was blasting at max speed all the time to keep the temp at 21 and keep the windows clean. The max distance between charging stops was 100 miles and we charged 7 times.
I will buy another EV if I want to do a longer journey, i3 is not grand tourer, it's a city car, but a very good city car.
I found this a really informative and well presented video - thanks for posting. I've got my Taycan RWD sport turismo arriving later this year and looking forward to taking my wife and 3 young lads on a long journey to test it out. This video has given me a strong sense of confidence that I am not going to run out of charge.
What about stats from the support vehicle? I presume that wasn't an EV?
Excellent demonstration you guys have made here! Let me add that an average consumption of ca. 200Wh/Km (3.12 m/kWh) on such a "beast" and riding at the speeds you travelled most of the time is an outstanding result, too! Hats off for the team and the car, also!
as a point of reference, at similar (if not higher) speeds my Tesla 3 LRDM gets 3.77 miles/kw....about 21% higher efficiency.
To be honest, I think this trip could be massively optimised. I know you took a bunch of detours and didn't really aim to get the lowest time possible, but I'm pretty sure that (ignoring battery overheating meaning I'd have to stop for a night) I could do the same trip with my e-Golf in about 25 hours

Just thought that I would say that if you would like to optimise charge times you are better off getting the car to a low percentage about 5% this is when the car charges fastest and then you want to leave at about 60% when the cars charge speed slows down then go to the next charge point stopping more but for less time it effects cars like the etron and taycan less but it can save you time and I don’t know what the availability of ionity chargers is like in Serbia so I get it if you had to charge to a higher percentage to get to the next chargers anyway just thought that I would say
Great run. Interesting to see how the infrastructure is the limiting factor in these cars, rather than anything intrinsic to the machines themselves. Love the Taycan, too. It'd be interesting to see you replicate the 2009 Top Gear Car vs Stamp challenge where Hammond and May drove a Porsche Panamera from Scilly to Birksay, in the Orkneys, but obviously in the EV equivalent. I doubt it would say anything good about British infrastructure, however.
The Taycan is woefully inefficient hence the use of a large battery. Model 3 75 kw battery will achieve the same If not better range to a Taycan with a 95 (?) kw battery. Plug and charge is supposed to be implemented on the latest version of software but then your still reliant (as you point out) on a variety of infrastructure providers (or Porsche dealerships doing office hours, what genius thought of that?) running hardware based of windows OS, whereas a SC stall just has a modem, it's the car that does the thinking. 2 very different approaches.
@@malcolmhedges7346 Yes, it's obviously not built for efficiency, and as you say, that makes the owner even more dependent on public charging points (or, oh, the hilarity, dealership charge points). It'll be interesting to see how manufacturers deal with the question of range, efficiency, charge times etc. A part of me still wonders if this current generation of heavy battery EVs is the future. It just seems so .... 1970s milkfloat.
They made a classic mistake with the AC. Car systems are usually HVAC which stands for Heating VENTILATION and Air Conditioning. If you want to keep cool and spare the AC you just keep the windows closed, run up the AC until it feels cool and then turn off the AC but leave the VENTILATION running. This will keep the cool air circulating inside the car without using any power from the traction battery. I'm assuming that the Porsche uses the 12-volt battery for ventilation like most other cars do.
Interesting tip! We must try that in the future, but for this run, we wanted to treat the car like a normal car, hence we left the AC running at sat at regular motorway speeds.

We've done 1150km in a Skoda Enyaq from South west France to Brussels leaving at 9h arriving at midnight. Taking it easy with a full car and two dogs. No problems. Ionity charging. Grand tours are very possible
Wonderful to see great efforts are being made to provide an excellent charging infrastructure across Europe. It's a shame here in the UK our focus is/has been on making the country isolated, poorer and destroying community spirit.
The UK government want nothing to do with sustainable travel or non fuel based cars. If they can't tax you on it, there's nothing in it for them.

Rapid chargers really are not cheap. Ionity is wowowow expensive.
Yes, I was surprised that Doug and the editor didn't calculate the ICE car equivalent for this 1199 mile journey, based on current petrol / diesel prices.
At the 'Porsche-discounted' 30p/kWh rate and approx £1.80 per litre for diesel, that would equate to around 85 miles/gallon in an ICE car.
However, at the regular 69p/kWh rate, that plummets to a mere 36 miles/gallon...!
Yes, EV owners (like me) will state that "paying Ionity prices is like ONLY buying your diesel at a motorway services prices, which people never do..." but, at the moment, if you wanted to replicate this type of journey at those type of charging speeds, then you don't have any other workable choice BUT to pay those Ionity-type costs per kWh - even our own (excellent) Gridserve 350kW charger prices range from 39p to 45p, depending on their location.
However, having said all of that, there are 2 points of note to end on:
1. Driving an EV causes less local air pollution in the populated urban areas where our families live - and, for the future health of future generations, that has got to be worth the little bit of 're-fuelling' anxiety some people might have, some of the time... put it this way, for the first 20 years or so of the existence of petrol cars, owners had to visit a local chemist to buy their fuel...!!
2. Society is a mere 12 years in to the evolution of running an EV as a mass-market solution - compared to over a century of running ICE cars - so, as battery tech and charging infrastructure improve, so will the overall experience of running an EV.
EVs aren't for everyone in every situation, just yet - but that day will absolutely come.
@@jonathantaylor1998 Points very well made. At a tangent though … We need a proper full study on the environmental cost of producing an EV, and on how we will be disposing of old batteries.
I would add, there are two pollution angles (lungs & climate). Sounds harsh, but we continue to live longer and longer, and that’s a massive problem! And whilst India & China carry on producing half the world’s CO2 … in the UK we are but pi**ing in the wind re climate issues.
@@MoJoAssets you might want to look up the Union of Concerned Scientists white paper on the subject “Cleaner cars from cradle to grave”. They did the analysis of environmental impact from battery sourcing to final disposal of EV vs ICE. Even assuming non renewable energy source for charging the EV, EV are far more environmentally friendly then combustion cars. You are concerned about battery disposal in the future. They are being increasingly recycled for their valuable materials and that technology is improving. You really should be more concerned about the daily massive oil spills that occur to power out combustion economy that aren’t reported on because they are so common they have stopped being newsworthy.

Also, here in Sweden Northvolt is already setting up recycling plants.

How far a car can drive on one tank/charge is not really relevant, what is relevant is whether that range is further than you can go before needing a stop... and for me that range isn't so great, 100 miles and I'm bored and wanting to stretch my legs.

Here in the states especially in the NE suburbs EV Stations are still far behind. I have a BIG problem with the loss of energy just from a car sitting overnight in the cold, or very hot days. What about half the people who live in High Rise Apt. Buildings Everywhere with hundreds of cars for each. How are all these going to charge over night?
What was an average consumption?
Based on someone else's comment, they calculated it at about 3.2 miles/kWh which, for that 'class' of (performance) car, fully loaded was actually pretty impressive...!

I took my ev6 air 3850 miles at 3.9 m/kWh. From Scotland to Norway artic circle. No hassle with charging. Used Ionity for most but even north of tronhiem where Ionity stops there were plenty 150kwh chargers.

You chose the wrong car. Tesla has a widespread, reliable, fast charging network married to software that provides accurate range predictions and seamless mapping and charging. But you know all this. I tend to drive to Liguria in Northern Italy once or twice a year. I’ve been doing it for 20 years. We tend to take the same route, France, MB tunnel or maybe Fejus. We stop at the same service stations we always used to in our ICE cars and the journey takes the same time. We were never racing, if your travelling with children you run at their pace (anything for a quiet life). And now they’re at Uni and we’re older… it is that needs to stop. So Tesla is the standard that the rest needs to match. So next time, multiple EV’s vs each other.
I believe this "race" may have been sponsored by Porsche, hence the use of suboptimal hardware!

Cool video. Not sure the choice of electric car was optimal. Would have made sense to pick a more efficient car with similar (if not better) charging speeds. According to A Better Route Planner you could have accomplished the same route in about an hour and a half less in a Tesla Model 3.
While you say "we're a long way off from equivalency to IC", I say that's largely due to the use of an inefficient EV with a less than great charging infrastructure. In fact the "what we need to see now" conclusion pretty much exactly describes what's available from Tesla today. And while the car you used cost ~86k, you could have achieved better results in a car that cost ~30k less.
While I live in US, I regularly drive 1,000 miles between the SF Bay Area and Jackson, Wyoming (a part of the country with high speeds and limited charging infrastructure). This is in the aforementioned Tesla Model 3. No matter the season I am able to do this trip in the same time as with my earlier petrol cars. Have never had to wait for charging and have never had any issues making the trip.
only in Croatia you will lose up to 6 hours because of tourists coming in Croatia,its not possible to make for 24 hours all those countries

We recently did a similar trip to Croatia in a Taycan Cross Turismo 4. Very similar experience using IONITY wherever possible. Needed some planning, but went brilliantly. We found at motorway speeds a stop every 2.5 hrs was about comfortable and the ultra fast charging had us back on the road after 30mins.
The car is a superb grand tourer, and the cost for 2900 miles was £215. This did include some free overnight charges at hotels.
The success of EV’s will be dependent upon cars being able to take very fast charging and a reliable network of chargers. With this in place total range is less of an issue

If this had been done before 2006 then you'd be right.
We have a VW ID.3 and have traveled with it around Europe (4000 km in France and Italy, 1500 km in France and Germany just this summer). The car does everything we need, no problem. The only (possible) inconvenience is the charging infra. Along the highways the rapid chargers mostly work, but in some more remote places it's sometimes a bit of hit-and-miss, with maybe 1-in-10 chargers being out of order (not very accurate estimate). We never got stranded, though. There have always been other options nearby if one charger didn't work. Still, it's an inconvenience and room for improvement.

only an absolute fool would expect the peak 270 kw when they plug in their car at 51% state of charge. why do conventional car magazines don't have competent people to review and drive electric cars? it isn't that hard, you know?
What a great challenge! My Taycan Cross Turismo 4S hopefully arrives in a month or so, I don’t think I’ll ever copy this but I would love to take it around the UK and Europe once I’m comfortable with the technology and how it all works.

It can be seen that you don't have an electric car, first of all, why did you charge so much in France, where it's even harder to charge, to reach 30% in Germany, at least if you go fast on the autobahn, you'll still recover, anyway 10-30% it charges almost instantly, and after staying up to 80%, not up to 90-100%, and so you stop for 20 min maximum, not 30-40 minutes, you could done also Romania and Bulgaria if you are a pro at electric cars
Thats a young persons game. Not sure these ionity motorway daisy chain trips mags seem to do tell the normal person much. I would much prefer you to take a niro ev6 etc on a long weekend trip around say mid wales or the lakes or Scotland(NOT NC500) and camp or stay in B&B so it is not easy to charge at night. Basically emulate a family holiday in the countryside

Can you do the same in a Tesla model 3 LR to compare. To go green charges should have solar chargers. This will help the grid.

How much it would have cost in a similar gas powered car?
Without the Taycan temporary KW discount, about the same £60 per fill up, 300 miles per tank (diesel), 4 fill ups, so £240 (diesel) vs £260 for electric. So no saving 'fuel' wise, and don't forget to budget for the extra £10K to pay for the battery and the shorter lifespan of the car to replace the battery :-)

Are you guys sure, the Taycan is preconditioning the battery when navigating to a charger using Andoid Auto? I doubt that. First charing might be related to that. Also charging to 100% isn't really ideal, you might've lost a lot of time there.

So in a 24 hour trip, with 6 stops having a minimum charge time of 1/2 hour each stop. That's 1/8th of the trip charging up the car when a petrol or diesel car would have only spent 30 mins in total refuelling (That's if it had to stop 6 times, which it probably wouldn't!).
That aside. Very informative video. Love the Taycan. However, I'd opt for the estate version if I could afford one which I can't.

You lost me at the slow rates of charge. This is not the future. This is a scam
It's best to think less about the absolute number and instead look at how you actually do your journeys. Most folk, especially with a family onboard, drive 2.5-3hrs between stops and then stop 30-40 mins for a pee, food etc. If *you* travel like that, then a longer range EV will not be a minute slower than your current car. If you tend to drive 5 hours between stops, then there will be some inconvenience, yes.
they could have achieved a significantly better time by using a Tesla rather than a Porsche....but it seems this "race" was sponsored by Porsche....so it was what it was.
@@dangrass Maybe not much faster. but certainly a bit easier. I think the world is a little tired of hearing about how great Tesla is though (and i speak as a Tesla owner), and a demonstration of capability with a non-Tesla is good to see. It's just that Porsche isn't exactly a "people's car", so i would prefer to have seen this done with an EV6 or something more affordable.
I would note that they could have saved quite a bit of time by just starting further south in Germany or Belgium

If the idea was to make a RECORD with EV, why would you pick a car that can't do it? It's called failure before start. Tesla Model 3 could have done this same trip, or many other EV's, but not city cars.

Agree. Apparently Porsche has one of these in the press fleet, since it seems to be showing up everywhere. Why anyone would actually pay for that color is beyond me.
