Two fighters who didn't reach their full potential!
2 underrated fighters who could cause an upset on any given night when not slacking & properly trained.
Corrie died in hospital after he was wounded in a armed robbery in 2012. He used his body to shield his daughter.

Damn,, Coop. You never knew which version of Bert you would get as far as conditioning and will to stay in the fight. RIP to both of these guys.
Yeah, they were both working at a fast pace (I suppose Cooper's style demanded that) but along with the good shots from Sanders, that pace proved too much for Cooper. In that last round when Sanders first countered with a long burst of punches Cooper's mouth was wide open, I think he was gassing out.

Corrie Sanders had so much natural talent, he didn't train hard enough.
Corrie was a very special character, boxing was a hobby for her, she was never an idealist, she would not train regularly, if she devoted herself to boxing, she would be one of the top three names.

Sanders was an inconsistent fighter but still my favorite in that era. If he had dedicated himself to training and grown more endurance he would have been at the top of the heap for a long time. He also could have benefited from a good American trainer like Emanuel Steward that would have brought his career along more carefully. His natural hand speed and power was his strength and he had size as well as a good chin. And for what it is worth, my wife thought he was handsome.

Nobody wanted to fight the Sniper when he was young because he was left-handed and he could punch.
Would have been interesting to see what he would have done against Tyson because you know Tyson's not going to move away from him either he'd be right in front of him.

Corrie Sanders in his prime had terrific hand speed for a heavyweight and packed a good punch. He had a stamina problem however, and it cost him dearly in some of his biggest fights.
No roadwork,had a belly back issue...Still he earned his paycheck always,would clean up today..
Though joe Frazier and Bert Cooper were both fighter type boxers that closed the distance and fighting style were similar the way they fight is completely different, joe Frazier tuck his chin down and constantly chase down his opponents by slipping their punches and counter punching them once he slips the punches like a gazelle hook and use the cross guard as an extra form of protection if his slips led him in bad positions, Frazier relied on close range to do fight, Bert Cooper however would mostly rely on mid range to fight relying on his cross guard at all times, plant his feet and steadily close the distance.

Being a fan of Cooper, which I was, can be a frustrating experience! This quitting thing that a he did a few times during his career always left me feeling empty. His drug problems no doubt figured into his erratic performances. With his power he should try to stay in the fight as long as possible because anything can happen. He is a classic front runner. Very sorry to hear of his death.
I think his pressure style demanded more fitness than he appeared to have coming into this fight. All that extra weight seems to have been a factor, early in that final round his mouth was open.

Trivia fact: Corrie Sanders' trainer is Harold Volbrecht, who in his day unsuccessfully challenged Pipino Cuevas and Mark Breland for the WBA welterweight championship.

Harold Volbrecht, Corrie Sanders' trainer, fought both Pipino Cuevas and Mark Breland for the WBA welterweight championship in his day. Unfortunately, due to the sports isolation against South Africa, his chances came too late and he was past his prime.
South Africa deserved to be isolated.

Corrie Sanders, in my humble opinion, was a better fighter than the likes of Bert Cooper whom he beat easily here, as well as Michael Moorer, Pierre Coetzer, Alex Stewart, Michael Dokes, Jessie Ferguson, Carl Williams, Bruce Seldon, Ray Mercer, Frans Botha, Shannon Briggs, Razor Ruddock, Frank Bruno and Tommy Morrison. The problem was that he could not get fights against name opponents because none of the top heavyweights were prepared to fight him. He was considered too dangerous and was therefore avoided. He only got his big break at the age of 37 when he fought Wladimer Klitchko in 2003, shocking the world by knocking out his much younger adversary inside two rounds. He then got a shot against Wladimir's older brother, Vitali, for the vacant WBC title in 2004. Although he lost that fight, he gave a good account of himself in the process, hurting Vitali badly in the first round and making him work very hard for his victory. The only heavyweights from the 1990s that I think would have beaten Sanders for certain, were Lennox Lewis, Oliver McCall, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe, Evander Holyfield and Andrew Golota, in other words the very best of the best. Sanders was very underrated and probably the most avoided heavyweight from 1991 right through to 2003. May his soul RIP. In memorium: Corrie Sanders: 1966- 2012.
He lost a big fight against Hasim Rahman on the way up which derailed him, plus he was never really active enough. He was only fighting something like once a year by the time he lost to Hasim and the rumours were that he was doing a lot of golfing and was thinking of becoming a pro. He never really made the big push to get into title contention and basically got lucky when he got called out of retirement to chin Wlad.
Corrie Sanders was literally Natural Fighter, Imagine that he beaten Klitchko when he was focusing on paying golf... Unreal... Massive natural left hand, don't forget... He was ONLY fighter who made Vitali Klitchko in his whole career run away from him badly staggered...and slipped down on the floor... Nobody ever did that to Vitali, not even close... Only Lennox Lewis had good uppercut which wasn't that bad as Corriers counter left...
I kinda think in this fight Cooper just showed up to collect some money.he could of done better in this fight... his weight was way up.he came in at 242...he was 215 against holyfield....I think Cooper was like"ok I fought a few rounds I can get paid now"...cooper had a problem with over eating,drugs and an unwillingness to train.....he had talent he just didn't do no where near as much as he could of with it
Yep, as well as the good performance from Sanders Cooper wasn't in condition, not least to execute his pressure game plan for 10 rounds - maybe he thought he'd try and KO Sanders early on, but his mouth was open in that final round, gasping for air and it was already too late.
I've seen Cooper put his life on the line in some fights.....in others, I've seen him walk away and quit like this. I guess at this point he had already lost the title opportunity (when he lost to Holyfield and had some BAD cuts and just had enough of it.
Even the toughest boxers would have a hard time fighting through that many hits from Sanders.

I can see why people thought Sanders could be a top contender, maybe champ. The issue here was Cooper was still young at 27, but the wars he had fought had taken a huge toll on him.
This was well before Corrie Sanders stopped Vladimir Klitschko. He could punch and he was good on the inside. Cooper was already washed up although his career continued on for awhile.

Corrie Sanders was like Oliver McCall. An extremely dangerous spoiler who when in shape could beat almost anyone.
First time I saw Corrie listed ar 6'2", always thought he was legit 6'4".

He looks pretty fat to me, his shorts are pulled up rather high which disguises it but if you look at that area of his body his belly is considerable (for a fighter).

Bert Cooper was a great fighter, great pucher, but bad defense, bad technique
Drugs ruined Cooper. He had all the skills to be a champion with so many belts available.

Sanders had an immaculate record as policeman in Brits, near Pretoria, and was a man of exceptional courage. In a death befitting the hero that he was in all spheres of his life, he used his body to stop bullets fired by three racist Zimbabwean armed robbers, who sprayed shots into a restaurant full of members of Sanders' family. He urged his daughter to stay under his body and play dead, and he passed away in hospital the following morning. RIP Corrie.

Two Great boxers indeed. Corrie Sanders would have beat Tyson i do believe. He could take a punch or punches and answer back with total destruction to his opponent.
No chance. Tyson was too quick, too fast, and had power.

But Mayweather, De la Hoya, Pacquiao etc made even more money 💲💰 at lower ranks of featherweight, welterweight, middle weight etc than anyone else in any division.
To me it's more kinda lack of marketing strategy. Money is always available if you can fish it out there.

@@xeduxion4698 The guys you mentioned all were in weight classes full of tremendous fighters. The public wanted to see these machups, so the money was there. De La Hoya vs Mosley 1 & 2, Pacquiao's 4 fights w/ Marquez, Gatti vs Ward 1-3 were just the tip of the iceberg.
