The Pavilion was the magic of Myrtle Beach. Closing it was THE worst decision ever! If they're smart, they will bring the Pavilion back and restore the magic that Myrtle Beach is so desperately missing
There are other amusement rides in MB like Family Kingdom and a few smaller ride areas, and some Pavilion rides were moved to a new Pavilion Park at Broadway at the Beach.
Awesome trip down memory lane. I was 10 in 1990, and every summer when my folks made that left turn onto Ocean Boulevard I felt like we'd landed in Oz.
I miss the Pavilion. I also remember when I was a toddler in the late 70s that there was a Dracula's Castle on Ocean Boulevard and a Big Globe close by it. The Castle would have Dracula and Frankenstein out walking around in front of it.
That globe building was the Guinness World Records museum. I remember the haunted house next to it as well, but don't remember the exact name. A bit further down on the same side was the Candy Castle which was also shaped like a castle. They had a big taffy pulling machine up in the front window. The fresh taffy was amazing too, some of the best I've ever had.
I just drove by the pavilion area a few days ago. I hadn’t been back since 1997. Seeing nothing but grass and volleyball courts . I felt such sadness. That Pavillion brought such life, a pulse, and excitement. It really felt like the movie “Lost Boys”. Now , there stands empty volleyball courts. What a huge mistake.
Man I miss the Pavilion!! That was one of the best parts of going to the beach! That rainbow ride was one of my favorites. We spent hours at the arcade across the street right off the beach. Ahh memories 🤗😊
I miss the pavilion. Definitely had great memories. One time, back when when I was 14, I met a girl there and fell in love. We hung out all night at the pavilion, and then walked the beach once it closed. I was from NC and she was from another state. I never had a connection like that, and probably never will again.
Thank you for this video. Omg. I so miss the Pavilion. It was where we went every summer since I was a little girl. The ice cream was awesome and I loved the Ferris wheel. Everything was great and this video made me smile and reminisce about my younger years. Was there the year it shut down. They should bring it back. Thanks again.

I know carousel is still at Broadway covered up around the construction. Look at how busy ocean blvd was and at the McDonald’s and Wendy’s there too.would be cool if u could do one about the old base!
I really hope they do something with that band organ and fix it up...I remember it just sitting out of order at Broadway at the beach and I thought it was such a shame because it used to be so beautiful
Thanks so much I was 10 in 87 & my grandparents took me to Myrtle Beach every summer as far back as I can remember & this video sure brought back some special memories of a better time in life
Dude, thanks for the memories. Gotta say though that I go back 25 years earlier than your video. Right. Early 60s. What you said about it being an exciting place was so right especially for a 10-year-old. The "merry-go-round" and the calliope (aka the Myrtle Beach Organ") are forever ingrained in my memory. And way back then, the paving was non-existent. It was dirt, and wonderful. At the front of the amusement park facing the ocean were twin ferriswheels with the height of romantiic views of the Atlantic at their apex. Moving, even for a kid who still had the sand of the day's adventures under their toenails. The amusement park roller coaster was fun, but the real test of courage was the :Wild Mouse' individual car "roller coaster" in the Pavillion amusement park across the street. Those up-dressed people in your video were still to come. The real meaning of "Family" has been lost to a political ping-pong ball. You want to see families relaxing, having a great time, letting their hair down, being unafraid of being ordinary, everyone revisiting their own childhood with their own children, the 60s were the end of that. Sorry you missed it.
Waaaay back in summer of '83, I worked at that McDonalds across the street from the park. 😳😅 You can see the arches behind the Rainbow ride you didn't like. 🌈 I would pay $1 after every shift to ride the Corkscrew coaster before I walked home! We lived that close to the park. 🤣 Many great memories!
Thanks so much for sharing! I was stationed at Myrtle Beach AFB from 1987 to 1991. I loved the Pavilion and especially the Rainbow. I drove up from Charleston right before it closed to ride it again. So glad to see the love for the ride here.
@@MrMyrtle Haha! One year at Broadway they had one of those sit & spin kind of rides & my husband made ours really spin. It was the first time in my life I actually saw someone turn green. It was him. LOL 😂🤢 We got off & he said "I'm sick , we have to leave!" I said, "We can't, I want to shop, we just got here!" 😆🛍️🛍️🛍️ So I got him a Coke or something & we sat down & he felt better! Great video as always! the fall of Myrtle Beach was the end of the whole Pavilion Amusement Park and the Dances across the street. I rode many of these rides including the Corkscrew, the Pirate , the haunted mansion and many more. The Corkscrew replicated the Carolina Cyclone at Carowinds in both NC/SC, however I believe that the Carolina Cyclone in Charlotte had 2 verticle loops in the ride as well. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories.
This is a great walk down memory lane! Thank you for posting. By the way, 'The Attic' used to be called the 'Magic Attic' before they shortened the name of it. A really great local band called 'Sugar Creek' played there all the time and then they shortened their name to just 'The Creek'. I used to go to The Magic Attic in my early teens. Such great memories. All good, innocent fun. I"ll never really understand why they tore down such a magical place. So much history gone.
It was a business decision by the owners. The park's attendance dropped after they fenced the park in 2000 and started charging admission. They also expanded the park and removed a road to build rides like the Rapids. At least they relocated some rides mostly flat and kiddie rides to a new Pavilion Park at Broadway at the Beach, and Family Kingdom is still there. But, the Pavilion log flume, Haunted Hotel (formerly Haunted Inn) Antique cars, and a few other rides and buildings were razed in 2007 after the park closed. There were supposed to be condos built on the spot that never happened. And a pirate dark ride was relocated from Broadway to the Pavilion a few years before the park closed, they should have just kept it where it originally was, now it's probably gone for good.
It had so many crowds when it originally opened. I only go their on vacation because I live in New Jersey and when I go to Family Kingdom I almost never see people
the former surfrider hotel (now owned by boardwalk) between 23rd ave N and 24th ave N in Myrtle had that same arcade version of off-road. you are right, Sir, it was one of the best!
Wikipedia indicates the Pavilion had "Rainbow" (serial number 48368), originally produced as a park model by HUSS in Germany back in 1984. The ride was brought to the Pavilion in 1987. After the Pavilion closed, the "Rainbow" made an appearance on UA-cam (search "Maxwell Ivey Rainbow"); the video was made to showcase the "Rainbow" as it was for sale on "midway marketplace". i assume the "Rainbow" laid in a field for six years before being shown on UA-cam. The "Rainbow" was converted to a trailer-mounted model and sold to a traveling midway that operates out of France. Wikipedia indicates "Rainbow" 48368 was scrapped in 2014. Hopefully it brought two years of joy to kids in Europe. The Fleur Family operates a traveling midway in France, so i hope any useful 48368 parts are being used on "Rainbow" #13 the Fleur Family has owned since 1983. Another "Rainbow" (#28) exists in an amusement park name Antibes Land in France...maybe parts of 48368 live on as part of this machine? Both French Rainbows can be seen on UA-cam (search "Fleur Rainbow" or "Antibesland Rainbow"). Our closest "Rainbow" made by HUSS is located in Rossville, Georgia and is named "Conestoga" (#28) complete with Wild West theme. #28 was also built in 1984, but the seats are sideways and designed to look like riding in an old stagecoach (UA-cam search "Lake Winnie Conestoga"). i can't believe you read all of this, thanks!
Man I miss going to the pavilion amusement park back when it was open still in 2004. i remember riding the hydro rapids water ride that they had as well as seeing all of the other rides there. Another ride that I wanted to go on back then was the Hurricane Cat 5 wooden roller coaster. But now I will never get to ride it ever. i also heard that the broadway at the beach area is going to expand the pavilion east section and add some new attractions there in its place. But it was just a rumor for now. I hope it becomes true though.
I was there many times as a child and later took my own kids there. It is sad that I can’t also take my grandkids. It was more fun and a lot less expensive than going to Disney World!

The Pavilion corkscrew roller coaster may have been the same one a woman was killed on when it was installed at Magic, aka tragic, Harbor amusement park. I found that out AFTER I rode the Corkscrew when it was installed at the Pavilion
I remember years ago I think a teen boy fell from the Ferris Wheel. Am I correct Mr. Myrtle? Seems like someone had been shaking their seats or something. Horrible...😢
Myrtle Beach Things I’m looking for videos back in the Castle Dracula/Guinness Museum days. Also it’s pretty hard to find any info on the old Lighthouse Motel, or the original Days Inn hotel further south.
I feel so lucky to have been the last gen who grew up with the Pavilion being a weekly thing every summer break. Myrtle Beach isnt the same since it closed
I've been there once, but didn't go on any of the rides there, we spent time in the arcade though. I've been on a Rainbow and a little known park in Niagara Falls Canada called Maple Leaf Village, it was pretty fun and gave good airtime I remember. Most of the rides that were at the Pavilion were also found at my home park Darien Lake, so that was probably the reason we didn't go on any rides there.
I rode the rollercoaster when it was at the Magic Harbor next to Pirateland. It wasn't very smooth if I recall correctly. I miss the Magic Harbor. It was a bonus when staying at Pirateland. Please do one on the Magic Harbor Mr. Myrtle

Well done. I know how you feel about those rides. I quickly learned I can't do those rides either. I don't do well with negative G's!
I always loved riding the Rainbow!! I would try to keep my arms up full circle as it would go around.
Awesome video. Good memories.
I love this video you make it look like you are their back in time
omg this brings back so many memories!!!!!!! I wish they never would have tore in down.. and now sits a zipline I never see anyone use!!!
It had so many crowds when it originally opened. I only go their on vacation because I live in New Jersey and when I go to Family Kingdom I almost never see people
There was a ride there that looked like a UFO. When inside it spun around and stuck you to the walls of it by centrifugal force. Loved that thing
The Gravitron!
the former surfrider hotel (now owned by boardwalk) between 23rd ave N and 24th ave N in Myrtle had that same arcade version of off-road. you are right, Sir, it was one of the best!
Would love to see the firework shops lining the street coming from south of the border to myrtle beach. Thanks for the great historic footage!!
I am 67 years old and rode the wild mouse when I was 10. Miss the pavilion.
Alot memory's there at the pavilion I never thought it be grass now
Man I miss going to the pavilion amusement park back when it was open still in 2004. i remember riding the hydro rapids water ride that they had as well as seeing all of the other rides there.
Good old days in Myrtle Beach
I was there many times as a child and later took my own kids there. It is sad that I can’t also take my grandkids. It was more fun and a lot less expensive than going to Disney World!
Please do more time travels !!
I will!
@@MrMyrtle Do you have anything from Surfside pier & Garden City Arcade? Are they going to rebuild the Surfside Pier? I remember walking out there & looking down we could see in between the boards. It was kinda scary seeing the ocean underneath at night.
@@MrMyrtle Hey Mr. Myrtle, I made 2 main posts & they disappeared. I was talking about graduating in 1990 etc. Do you see them anywhere? I made one & it disappeared & then I posted again & it's gone. Thanks for the video! Have a blessed day!
I don’t see them Jules.
@@MrMyrtle Weird huh? I wrote them twice. I was saying that I graduated high school in 1990 & was there that June. I remember seeing the girls in the video wearing white Keds with the slouch socks like I did back then.
😂😁 Also I thanked you for taking me back to those days.
I miss the Pavilion. I never rode anything except for the Caterpillar & something similar. I remember the loud music & going backwards! It was fun! I'm glad Peaches is still around! Have a blessed week Mr. Myrtle!
🙏🏻✝️🙋🏼♀️😁🌭🍦🎡🎢
Just got back from the beach. It is sad they tore it all down. I am happy that my children enjoy Family Kingdom. My 8 yo rode their roller coaster 7 times. He will have good memories at least....just not the same as mine.
Man I miss this place
The rainbow was an awesome ride. I miss the Pavilion I can't believe they tore it down for nothing so disappointing
Robert, it was not. The girl was my friend. We were in 8th grade and her name was Sherri. The coaster was called the Black Witch. 🖤😭
I read an article a while back and I believe that you are correct.
Wish there was video from back in 80/81
I can try go find one.
Myrtle Beach Things I’m looking for videos back in the Castle Dracula/Guinness Museum days.
Also it’s pretty hard to find any info on the old Lighthouse Motel, or the original Days Inn hotel further south.
I'd love to see videos of the 70s at the pavilion.rides& all.please!
I haven't done 70's yet but I do have some footage from 60's here ua-cam.com/video/wmfNvRA9Mn8/v-deo.html
I feel so lucky to have been the last gen who grew up with the Pavilion being a weekly thing every summer break. Myrtle Beach isnt the same since it closed
Yes love it wish u could do one on the Haunted inn ....in depth. Ty for the video 🙂
Great memories but I was lookin for M.C.Hammer pants i was there that year an they were in all the surf shops,an yes I did get a pair!
I rode the rollercoaster when it was at the Magic Harbor next to Pirateland. It wasn't very smooth if I recall correctly. I miss the Magic Harbor. It was a bonus when staying at Pirateland. Please do one on the Magic Harbor Mr. Myrtle
