Modern Brazilian jazz monster Edu Ribeiro demonstrates how to take the samba school to the drum kit.
========================================================
Hi, I am Edu Ribeiro and welcome to Two Minute Jazz. Today, we are going to talk about samba. Bringing the lines of the percussion from the drum set, we have three special lines to put together here.
The first one is the most important for the samba, and that's the surdo that keeps the time for everybody. And the surdo can be very simple, or it could be a little syncopated, but it's going to be hard to imitate with the bass drum. So it could be played less syncopated.
The other instrument is the tambourine, the small instrument that people play in the school of samba. But we have a special clav like that. I'm going to try to put together the tambourine and the bass drum imitating the surdo.
And another one that I'm going to play is the pandeiro that people play with two hands. I'm going to try to play all the sixteenth notes with my right hand on my hi-hat. Then I'll try to put it all together.
There is another instrument called the agogô. I'm going to try to imitate two songs with my tom and my floor tom.
Okay, happy practicing and see you next time!

As a retired BRASILIAN double bass player, I’m saying: you are a very good teacher. Obrigado.
That right hand is crazy
There is something so intoxicating about the samba rhythm when it's performed by a master percussionist like Edu. He makes it look easy, but surely that's the result of talent plus long years of dedicated practice. I love Brasilian culture so much-that rare magic allowing each day to melt into beautifully colored brushstrokes is the spell that transforms a lifetime into a living work of art.
So so good! I definitely don't get it, but I think the best way to learn something like this is just to watch the master more.
If I may be so bold as to add to this awesome player's wonderful description and advice....... the bosa nova has a lot of the same coordination at a slower tempo. I'd start there. Focus on two limbs only and vary which two limbs. Then 3 limbs and vary them. Then one day.... magic... all 4 will come together... also, get working on that right hand.. he makes it look easy but the ride at that tempo is a killer.
As of 3/7/20, no one has disliked this. Nor should they.
Ah you jinxed it!
@@arranmacgabhann6103 Someone with bad taste was bound to come along eventually.
As of 12/15/20, 7 people only had two minutes to watch a 3:35 video.
Everytime, soon as someone says, the dislikes show up

Edu always perfect...
If you americans wants to learn more about Samba, I recomend the album Batucada Fantástica from 1976. The drummer in this album invented Samba on drums how we knows today. Other good stuff to know Samba is The New Ways to The Brazilian Drums of Sérgio Gomes
the second is a book
Thanks for the tip. Although I’m not American 😉
Pretty sure south Americans got it down man.
ty, I've been trying to find books in English to read about the history of Brazilian drums
@@TheFreemanuk that's enough
I have been trying to play this samba for awhile now. It's hard for me to learn. Great instructional video. I will keep practicing!
this is hard to play. like predicted. great lesson!
Not hard, just unfamiliar.
that's exactly what my drum teacher said aha! @@meftahe3
@@19tet I believe anyone can play anything if you slow it down and "make it" easy/familiar for yourself. I try to get the words such as difficult and hard out of my vocabulary when teaching/learning.
i learned the sudo (i hope i spelt it correctly) beat he played today!! @@meftahe3 🙂 yes i agree!
The thing with samba is that it's pretty difficult to read sheet music for, especially for percussion. The way I learned is to just feel it out
Ahhh... Samba... 😍
Flawless groove. I cant argue.
I’ve been learning from a Brazilian rhythms book and this really helped me contextualize the sheet music I am learning thanks
Wow, 1:49, the way you're getting the sound of a tamboril with that tom, awesome tone/timbre, half a rim-shot, half a tight tom, so precise man.
Please don't end!!!! ok I'm replaying this.
CAN'T WAIT TO PRACTICE THIS
Thank you, Edu!

Wow, makes me wanna dance. Great illustration of Samba.
Being a fan of the Neville Brothers and New Orleans music it never ceases to amaze as to the influence of Latin beats. So much flavor, so much passion, so much fun!
This is fantastic!!! Especially that sound of that syncopated one on just the floor tom... Have wrote it out now and even then it is cray to catch... Some unxepected independence there. Hope to catch it soon. Thanks Edu! Very helpful!!
