whooooo!!!!!!!!!!!! That´s the feeling. Never heard any of todays drum-legends that have that feeling when playing "samba".Thank you! I even won´t try copying it, just play, stop thinking, start feeling, listen a lot to batuccadas
At 14:32 there’s a confusing error in the translation. Edu says he always uses the hi hat in the “cabeça do tempo”. The translation says he uses it in the “upbeat.” Cabeça do tempo, as we can hear in his demonstration, means the downbeats (numbered beats, not “and” beats or upbeats)
How did you develop such a depth of knowledge on these topics? That felt like a whole ethnomusicological study of the beat. And what a right hand!! Thank you for sharing, this was a great help.
I've seen Edu play live a couple of times and in the concerts he always talks about what he's playing, tell stories, talk about the instruments and etc. He's brazillian and I think he probably had teachers and masters that had deep technical and cultural knwoledge about this style
5:44 thanks for showing it played the brazilian way! Too many learn it the 'easy' or reversed way starting playing on the downbeat but that's not the way most Partido and Partido-influenced music is phrased - melodically and chordchange-wise! Playing at the "Brazillian" way really freeze the musicians up from the downbeat. (This concept is heard in a lot of music that attempts to transcend the boundaries of the town beat! IMHO.)
Muito bom mesmo! Vou passar o sábado estudando samba.. Eu gosto mt tb de por Olodum pra tocar e adaptar as percussões na bateria, ai acabo pegando vários ritmos novos pra por nos grooves.
Very interesting, and it sounds fantastic. A Partido alto , is it like the cuban montuno? Somewhere in a composition the partido alto is placed, like they do in Cuba with the montuno ( A more intensified and solistic part of a composition )
Partido alto is a type of samba, highly connected to the origins of samba from Angola and Bahia. Like most old-school samba, it's produced within a circle of performers. Usual characteristics are slow tempo and free, improvisational singing on top of a refrain. ua-cam.com/video/xnxR9Qe3ZZA/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/4P1dq3bh9E8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/FsypRAPMgdY/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/Pwmwx-BznaI/v-deo.html
Muito bom. I just think the subtitles are wrong in one thing ' He says he puts the hi-hat na 'cabeça do tempo' literally meant he places the hi hat on 'the head of the beat', meaning on the down beat, not 'upbeat' as stated on the subtitles, right? And what he starts playing around 14: 33 places the hi hat on the down beats, that is , on 1, 2, 3, 4 and not on the up beats (which in my understanding would be the '&' )....please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not a drummer,

I always think of Partido Alto as a slower pattern. I love hearing this as uptempo
Maestro Ribeiro is brilliant.
What a gift to the world. Thank you!!!
