    Great advice! But, in my experience, if your car is overheating, the coolant is still in the reserve tank; then it can likely ALSO be Low (to almost No) Oil in the engine. Especially in an older car that doesn't have an oil light. Even a new car with an oil light, the oil light only turns on when there is absolutely no oil flow. Which at that point, you're already damaging at least your valves.
    But yeah... even at low oil levels, I've had an overheating symptom. Great video tho, and definitely great advice! Thanks!!

      +6speeddakota hi sir i have a question . if the radiator is open and i speed up the engine and the water is blowing out from the radiator is it my gasket is damage? the mechanics said that my gasket is damage. is it normal or it's true that my gasket of my honda odessey is damage?

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  8 років тому

      +Meldrid Chavez ok if it's not overheating, then there's a good chance that your head gasket is fine. Watching for coolant to fly out of the radiator is not a scientific test, nor is it s safe one. When you rev the engine, the water pump will create a surge of flow, forcing coolant out of the radiator. If you're concerned that you have a bad head gasket, there's a few things you can do to test it.
      First one is to check the engine oil for a creamy colour (coffee with milk coloured) if that's the case, you're getting water in the oil, which is one sign of a failed head gasket. Another one Is to look for an oily mess in the radiator and in the expansion tank, if you see oil in your radiator, very likely head gasket problem. Another one Is to look at the tailpipe when you first start it stone cold in the morning. If the engine runs rough for the first few seconds, and you have a lot of white smoke coming from the tailpipe, and the white smoke smells sweet, again, likely a head gasket.
      If you're not overheating, you don't likely have a bad head gasket and the mechanic is just trying to get you to spend money unnecessarily. Let me know if this answers your question. And please be safe, the coolant is very hot, and doing things like revving the engine with the cap off can cause very serious burns if you get sprayed.
      Cheers from beautiful Cabo San Lucas, Mexico (I'm on my honeymoon right now)

      Not likely, the fan is either triggered by the computer or it's switched by a thermocouple switch that's screwed into the water jacket on the engine block. So check your fan fuses first and then test the fan itself, they generally go bad before the switch does.

    • @JanaINFlorida
      @JanaINFlorida 7 років тому +1

      I jumped my fan switch so the fan constantly runs. Probably not the best way to 'fix' it, but it was good for three years until now.

    Easy way to know if it's safe to remove the cap is to squeeze the upper radiator hose, if it's easy to squeeze there's no pressure to worry about.
    Having coolant in the expansion tank does not mean the system is full, I've seen this many times. It must be checked at the radiator.
    Many engines need to be bled once the coolant gets low or if it boils. If you do a roadside re-fill you may think it's ok to drive and the gauge may not show high temperature because the coolant isn't reaching the sensor but the engine can still overheat and be seriously damaged.

      DonziGT230 I think that might have happened to me, I have a manual 2013 mustang 5.0. I had it out the other day, it’s not my daily but I was pushing it around this lake by my house and it overheated, the temp gauge was high and it was smoking so I pulled over right away. I called my wife and I checked the coolant and it was completely empty. It was all over the front of the engine, I told my wife to grab some coolant so I could get it home and check it. I let the car sit for 45min then filled it up. I drove it home and the gauge never got hot but by the time I got home the car seemed to squeal loudly when I was getting off the clutch and giving power to the engine while I was climbing up the drive way in first gear, When I lifted the hood the coolant was almost gone again and the car had steam still coming off it. I feel like that noise means I did something terrible. I’ll fix the leaks myself and replace the water pump but I think I did damage bro.

    My engine start smoking a lot from front and back. when I put coolant in radiator about 40% leak immediately and rest leak little by little. I started putting water only on radiator to drive few minutes so I can find a mechanic. Can water only in radiator be the cause of smoke. Evry time I drive for few minutes I put 2 gallons of water in radiator beofre but it's lot of smoke (not sure if it's water evaporating or engine getting 2 hot.

    Hey, can someone please tell me what could be the reason that the metal panel above the intercooler is getting heated all of a sudden? It's just the metal part, hood prop rod above the intercooler. I couldn't even touch them. I can also feel the heat blowing on my foot when I step on the clutch pedal. The intercooler fan wasn't running too which I'm not sure normal for cars (that if it's supposed to run only when the thermostat detects too much of heat?). The heating issue started after my car was sent to a bumper painting. And they jump started my car several times because my (old) battery died in their garage. Thanks for helping :-)

    I have a 2001 Acura TL. Last Friday sitting in the drive through lane I noticed my car was all the way in the H. Air conditioner was on, car was running fine. I immediately pulled over and shut it down for 30 minutes until it cooled off. I poured coolant in the radiator yet the reservoir was full. The next day took to a mechanic who advised me to get new caps on my radiator and overflow tank, since both were cracked/in bad shape. fluid was coming from the top of the overflow tank because it was broken to the point I could look inside without taking the cap off. Topped off the radiator; yet every time I get in it, I have to top it off and the overflow has coolant in it. Has not over-heated since Friday, but I'm shell shocked now. I commute about 150 miles daily. I do have 2 oil leaks that need to be addressed: one in the oil pan seal and one someplace else.

    A few days ago, Dec. 25 evening, my car overheated after driving it for about an hour and a half total. The temperature kept going up and almost hit red on the gauge. Turned off air-conditioning, temperature stopped going up. Pulled to the side of the road and the engine suddenly stopped running as soon as I fully stopped. Checked water reservoir, empty. Poured water over the radiator(not inside), and tried putting water into the reservoir but it seemed like it ran out completely right away. I let the engine cool off for about an hour and put water into the reservoir again. This time the water wasn't running out which was odd. I tried starting the car, and it did, with the temperature at its usual level most days. Took your advice, stopped at a couple more gas stations to put water in the reservoir & radiator until I got home safely. I wasn't running out of water in the reservoir but there seemed to be water leaking out from somewhere. What might be the problem? Sorry for the lengthy comment

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 років тому

      No problem at all for the long comment. Giving me more information helps me figure things out. So there's basically 2 kinds of leaks, large and small leaks. Large leaks will just pour right back out when you pour water in, i.e. bad radiator, hose, etc. A small leak will generally only leak visibly when the system is under pressure. You may lose a bit overnight, but not a ton.
      Not sure what vehicle you have, but generally I find unless you hit something that would cause the radiator to spring a leak or your hoses are so crusty that they cracked and broke, there's really only a few spots it can leak from. Generally, the most common place it leaks is the water pump shaft seal, as there really isn't much in the engine bay that has a dynamic seal on it to wear out. As the bearings in the water pump wear, they can develop some play. Think of it like new skateboard wheel bearings versus old ones; new ones are tight and roll smoothly, and old ones are noisy and loose, allowing the wheel to flop around a bit. Because the water pump always has the tension of the belt pulling on it, as soon as the bearings wear enough to cause even a few thou of play, it takes out the water pump shaft seal and causes it to leak. A water pump has a little pee hole on the front of it near the pulley, you'll see coolant leaking out of it if the water pump has indeed failed. Another sure fire sign of a bad water pump is coolant leaking near the front of the engine, near where the belts are. If it's leaking out that fast, you should be able to spot something leaking pretty easily.

    1 tip if your over heating turn your heater on & you'll see it will help temporary & get to a shop or near a auto parts store. Turn off your engine let it cool off. If you see you got coolant then check your oil, your probably running on no oil. That can make it over heat too. Always let your car cool down for safety.

    So my car evaporated all the water or it leaked all of it and well I didn’t check the termo on the car until I was 2 minutes away from my house and saw that it was on red idk for how long so I pulled over realized that there was no water. I stoped because I heard this strange noice and my car wouldn’t accelerate so I pulled over. Went home filled it up with water till it no longer needed. A few hours later I did the oil change and some other things when I turned on the car a bunch of smoke was coming out first I thought it was the oil. But then I thought maybe it over headed and something got messed up and huge white smoke clouds were coming out so I turned it off and now I’m here trying to see how severe is my problem so I’m pretty sure it’s because it overheated because there was no liquid. Can someone help me real quick?

    6SPEEDDAKOTA,
    1.) How do you check if your radiator is blocking Air or has good Air flow, how can I test it?
    2.) How do you check if the water pump is working correctly?
    3.) The Radiator Fan turns ON at 210F degrees on ALL cars?
    4.) Why do you have to use Distilled water and can't use House Tap water in the Radiator?
    5.) Thermostat OPENS at operating temperature at 182F degrees? by squeezing the upper radiator hose you can feel if the radiator fluid is flowing and closed at 180F degrees to check if the Thermostat is working correctly?

    hey im not sure where to turn to but here it goes......So my engine overheated for maybe 1-2 seconds passed by until i turned it off. it ALMOST reached the H mark. i had coolant everywhere and it sprayed from the cap. At first i thought it was the cap so i replaced it. i topped the coolant off and it idled fine. (my car is parked on the street at this point). I notice that coolant is not circulating through the hose...so i give it a good squeeze to force coolant to circulate and my engine temperature needle immediately drops to cold (it was at normal operating temperature and it dropped to almost cold...i assume in result of finally getting coolant to circulate) i also notice that hot air is not coming from the vents, just cold. At this point i turn the car off, i start it again with no problems a few times. im like alright car hasn't overheated at all besides that one time for 1-2 seconds. I decide to move the car inside my driveway which is like 30 seconds away, as im going up my driveway im carefully making sure my car doesnt overheat and then out of nowhere the needle starts shooting up to hot. i immediately put the car on park and as im going to turn the car off i see that the needle reaching the H mark, this happened maybe between half a second to a full second but turn it off really fast. i have coolant everywhere again (came out from the new cap i had just installed on the radiator) and im just scared out of my mind since i dont have money to fix this, even if a headgasket blew i cant afford it at the moment. anyways, i proceed to top it off and let it sit for almost 10 minutes. i go to turn it on and it cranks but wont turn on....at this point im scared as hell that my engine is gone since its my only way of transportation. i crank it a few more times and it feels like it wants to start like it only needs a little bit more but wont turn on. I finally gas it and and it turns on..... once its on im watching the temperature to keep going up the driveway, i check for any white smoke coming from the tailpipe but it feels fine. car didnt shake or rattle or make any funny noises. i go up the driveway like nothing is wrong. i reverse into my parking spot cars temp is fine and i proceed to turn it off.
    Things that i have checked for:
    -radiator fans spin
    -waterpump was apperantly changed by previous owner (ive only owned this car for like 2 weeks)
    -cannot find a collant leak anywhere else besides the cap
    -no white smoke from tailpipe and when i gassed the car to turn on it felt fine.
    -also oil looks fine, no milky like substance
    .......i have ruled that it might be the thermostat so any opinions would help. I am really scared to try to turn on my car again in case it doesn't want to turn on and in case of messing something up. Has anyone had a similar experience? do you think i warped some heads despite the really short time that the engine overheated....its not like i kept driving minutes or miles like some people do. i was on an uphill when the car cranked but didn't start....not sure if that has anything to do with it.....this is urgent so i really would like to hear your guys experiences.

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  8 років тому +2

      That can be a ton of different things, make sure that your coolant level is adequate, and that the radiator isn't full of crud and bugs, that will restrict airflow a lot. Be sure that you're not leaking any coolant either, if you can't maintain system pressure it'll overheat. Worst case scenario, it could be the head gasket. Be sure that the radiator fins are in good shape and not rotted out as well.

  • @Theshark15z

    I know my coolant is bad and I need to change it!! It brown and sludgy. I noticed I started tosmell a strong order of coolant and it started spilling out in the bottom of the car and I was hearing a loud hissing noise. The engine wasn't overheated the temperature was normal and the fans were turning on like they should, but I think coolant is backing up because it is sludgy. If I flush out the radiator and the system real good and put in brand new coolant I won't have any problems afterwards right??

    • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  8 років тому +1

      It wouldn't back up, there's nowhere for it to back up. If it's spilling out through the overflow, then you're boiling the system over. What I would do is flush the cooling system, and replace the thermostat, and see if that fixes it. It's likely that the sludge plugged up the thermostat and is causing you to overheat. If it's all sludgy, you may have a head gasket issue that would have caused the coolant to become sludge in the first place

      That's a sign of the transmission cooler going bad. A lot of vehicles use the radiator as a transmission cooler as well. So if the transmission line ends up getting a pinhole leak, that's what causes transmission fluid to invade the coolant

I was really surprised when I saw that. So Anyway, I left the car to cool down a little bit and I refilled the radiator with water, then I went to a mechanic and he said my radiator cap had a hole in it so It leaked the steam out. I replaced the cap but now my car makes all kind of noises when I went home after, they said its normal the car does that. • @6speeddakota
      @6speeddakota  7 років тому

      As the engine gets hot, it increases the pressure in the cooling system, once the pressure becomes too great, the cap burps the pressure off, if there's way too much coolant in the overflow tank, it'll spray everywhere. The plus side, is that it's not overheating from loss of coolant, the problem is now finding out what the issue is. It could be anything from a bad thermostat to a blown head gasket

Fix with jb weld? And what steps should I take after trying to seal it and adding more coolant before I start it? Also what should I do with the extra coolant that's in my over flow tank, it's filled to the brim! But my radiator seems low.

      I have no idea why your reply isn't popping up, but I'm starting to think that the crack in the radiator tank was from excessive heat and pressure, and wasn't the cause of the overheat. JB weld may work for a very temporary fix, but make sure you scuff the area around the crack before applying it so it'll stick. The overflow is full because the coolant was beginning to boil and it was pushing past the cap into the overflow.

      Could be the head gasket, you might want to have that checked. Also make sure that the radiator is not plugged up with junk. it also could be internally plugged, the best way to determine that is to use a thermal camera, problem is that they're expensive. Most places should be able to test for a head gasket leak easily enough

      I doubt that the blower and the cooling system issues are related. First thing I'd do is replace the coolant cap, if it's stuck and causes the system to over-pressurize, it'll cause all kinds of issues. The problem is what's causing the pressure to be very high. Normally it'll be around 5-7 psi, but it can go much higher if you have a problem like a head gasket failure.

      My shop is in Delta, I don't do a lot of work on European vehicles, but it depends on what it specifically needs, I do some work on them. Feel free to shoot me an email at 6speeddakota@gmail.com

      6speeddakota I got a quick question for you that's radiator related. I try to flush my radiator and of course I make sure my car is completely cool (usually 3 hrs) but after taking off the radiator cap and then pulling out the drain plug for the radiator, it barely leaks out any coolant with no pressure behind it whatsoever. What might be the cause/and or how can I fix this?

      Change your radiator cap. It’s leaking and evaporating

    I just take off the hood and strap it to the roof, I also take out the radiator and clean it and maybe even a good shake.

    I have a 03 Buick century and my radiator is leaking plus my car started smoking and making a hissing sound what else could that be

      Smoke coming from under the hood is most likely steam as the coolant is under pressure so it boils at a higher temperature, the hiss is the pressure escaping. Replace the radiator and you should be ok

    6SPEEDDAKOTA ---
    -- I don't know how to test the temperature sending unit or where its at in cars. I'm not sure if the sending unit means a sensor.
    ---1.) How do you test or what do you use to test the temperature sending unit?
    -----2.) Can I buy a digital gauge at PEP BOYS and install it in the fuse box wires by slicing the wires to test if the analog temperature gauge in the car dash temp gauge is reading false reading measurements of the temperature?
    3.) Can you make a youtube video showing how to test the car dash gauges to see if they work correctly and not reading false readings and how to test the sending units to the cars gauges?
    4.) I don't know how to test the cars gas gauge, oil gauge, temperature gauge using a ohm meter or what other test tool can I use to test these gauges are working correctly and not giving false reading or not working correctly?
