    Sometimes I wonder what folks are expecting from Brian Wilson. I hear people wax poetic about "Smile", which I never really understood. Innovative? Yes. Enjoyable? One time listening to "Vegetables" was enough for me. The few truly stellar tracks from the album (Heroes and Villains, Surf's Up, Good Vibrations) all surfaced on later albums and the rest were left to rarities collections for the die hard devotees. For me, The Beach Boys have always been the undisputed masters of uplifting songs with lush, layered vocals and Brian was the creative genius behind that magic. "Sail Away" is an amazing song that possesses virtually everything I have always loved about his music. A composition that immediately grabbed me with lyrics that made me feel hopeful and happy, even at a time when I've been somewhat down. Then the vocals . . . is there anyone out there with a voice like Blondie Chaplin? Forty-two years after he blew me away with "Sail On Sailor", he can still sing like no other. And Al Jardine is one of those performers whose outstanding voice has not only survived over fifty years, but in some ways even improved. Add his talented son Matt to the mix and I think Brian came up with a real winner. I love this new song and can't wait to hear the entire album. Thank you, Brian, for continuing to craft music that always lifts my spirits!

      Smile, in its entirety, is beautiful. You're forgetting gems such as "Wonderful", "Wind Chimes", and "Cabin Essence", just to name a few. Also, if you want to talk about "vocals" Smile is outstanding. To me music is always more important than lyrics. That's why groups like The Beach Boys and The Beatles are so timeless. The MUSIC is unforgettable. I agree, however, from what i've heard so far, that this new album sounds amazing. Chaplin's voice is awesome, and Al does sound better than ever. I've always loved his voice but, you're right, it actually sounds better. so melodic. Can't wait to hear this and see him live in Los Angeles this June.

      Peter Sferra BRIAN WAS WRITING AN AMERICAN SAGA AUDIO FILM WHEN HE DID THE SMILE SESSIONS! IT WAS GOING TO BE ON BROADWAY IF HE HAD EVENTUALLY HAD COMPLETED IT!! IT WAS A GROUP VOCAL ALBUM, NOT LIKE PET SOUNDS!! THE BAND WORKED SO HARD TO GET THE VOCALS PERFECT!! LISTEN TO THE COMPLETE SMILE SESSIONS BOX SET, THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT HE WAS DOING THEN!!!

      Heinkle Absolutely correct, his voice has not deteriorated at all to my ears. He actually sounds a bit like Mike Love in the very early days in this song though. Sounds great.

    • @Smooth0vibrations
      @Smooth0vibrations 9 років тому +6

      Hahahaha I agree with both those comments. Brian lost his voice simply from not using it though. Of course smoking didn't help at all, but the simple fact is he stopped practicing for too long.

    • @Smooth0vibrations
      @Smooth0vibrations 9 років тому +9

      Well it's not quite that simple, once you have spent 20 years misusing your voice it's not a matter of going to a vocal coach at 50 years old and undoing the changes with a few good lessons.
      The voice is a highly delicate instrument that demands intense focus to maintain once developed. It's not a matter of your credentials vs. my own, but rather the facts that are presented when taking a look at Brian's vocal evolution over his lifetime. If you listen to him nowadays, he has gotten his voice back a bit. Of course, it's not going to sound like it did in the 1960s though; frankly, he lost it.

    Such a GREAT song! The melody, the contrapuntal lines and the instrumentation are so well crafted and beautiful. It is astounding to think of Brian Wilson's life--what he has been through and survived--and then, at a time when most people are long retired, he can create these kind of quality pop compositions. As a composer and a teacher, I am constantly stunned at the quality of his arrangements.

  • @difab4n
    @difab4n 9 років тому +3

    Yes, a bit puzzled by some comments, what does 'breaking new ground' mean? The man has always written in the same style. And as far as needing collaborators, he always needed a lyricist, from the beginning. He can't sing the high stuff anymore, but so what. His brilliance was in the songs, the arrangements and lush beautiful sound. He has achieved this and more with this album. It is lovely and uplifting. I know 'Right Time' is simplistic, but as in the old days, I keep coming back to it. The title No Pier Pressure is a telling indication of too many years of a sensitive artist trying to please his family and friends and finally, in my view getting the last and wonderful word.

      Let it go. and please press a key that you can find between the "Tab" and "Shift". It is called the "Caps Lock" press it once.

      Derick Sturke Derick,thanks for the defense of that aggressive comment.Smiley smile was released prior(12th BB LP) to Smile.I still don't see the musical value of all 3 of the above stated LP's.I bought the 180 gram Pet Sounds LP and still wonder why.I will admit that I am partial to "Hero's and Villians".I lived through this time and bought the BB since 1962.Some just gets redundant.

    • @Derickbass
      @Derickbass 9 років тому +3

      ***** A lot of the stuff committed to vinyl (and stuffed in vaults for decades) was "experimental" and "unfinished". Or just partial song ideas still needing cohesion. And yeah, I don't fall on my knees worshiping everything on SMiLE. Some of it is... well... odd. But for me, not unlikable. The fascination with something like "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow", comes primarily from the stories of Western Recorders. Brian and all the Wrecking Crew wearing toy fire helmets; the incidence of a building fire down the block during the recording sessions.... and Brian's LSD induced wonderment of whether the song beget the fire!
      For me, it took *decades* for me to not reject the "post surf" era. I wanted pressed striped shirts, clean guitar lines, and stories of somewhat innocent times of Southern California. But that wasn't real in Brian's world and he let us all know.
      What fascinates me as much as the memorable songs is the story of the studio/production approach. While Phil Spector showed the world we could load up instrumentation on early four track recording, Brian showed how that sort of instrumentation could be beautifully and artistically woven together. Almost like an oil painting.
      And he set the bar so high for others to try and follow....

    hmm. it has good parts. still haven't quite tipped toward purchasing yet. every time i hear that jew's harp or some sleigh bells, i keep getting reminded that this is the hipsters surrounding brian forcing another album out of him. when he's gone, all of their careers are kaput. i like smile and pet sounds too, but brian was innovating on those albums, not setting up his eternal sound with coke bottles and taped piano strings... the hipsters are frozen in time just like mike love is.

      When I heard "Sail Away" was one of Brian's new tracks, I thought it was going to be a version from "Orange Crate Art". I'll get the vibe of this new song soon eventually. It's good., but didn't surprise me. So I picked up Ringo Starr's new lp. Brian is next. ; )
