Aw man. This seems like one of the best Brian Wilson & Carl Wilson interview, and there’s only 2 minutes worth. That’s like finding one verse from the Nag Hammadi
Why would they be interviewed for Forrest gump? I don’t remember them being part of that movie or even hearing any of their music (off the top of my head) being in it.
One of the things I love about Brian is how he doesn’t use complex terminology and how he even forgets what he’s used and certain musical definitions. He’s very laid back about it. It gives him a real innocence No showing off and no music theory. Anyone can learn and play and know music extremely well if they want to, but very rarely are people TALENTED with music and songwriting abilities.
I remember seeing an interview with Dennis where he said early on he was so amazed when Brian played him a new song - i believe it was IN MY ROOM - and Dennis asked Brian "how do you do it" - he was in awe of Brian's talents - you grow up with your older brother, live in the same house, same room and all of a sudden your brother is able to do almost other worldly things musically
BEAUTIFUL! I love creative human beings. 🌱 Brian Wilson's genius resonates with the ENTIRE WORLD! I'm grateful to have been sharing the planet along side his sounds.
The Beatles are very tough to beat… the Beach Boys at their best were better; their genius moments were more genius than the Beatles, but the Beatles win in longevity
I love this. More please. Im off to listen to it. I just remembered my father telling me how much he liked this song. It had just been released and I was surprised because he was at that time a country fan. Good music is good music.
Never seen this before. What a bunch of eccentrics the Wilsons were. Good thing they had such musical talent. I can't see any one of them working any kind of Regular Joe 9-5 job.
Paul McCartney can't read notes and Brian Wilson doesn't know technical terms like 'inversion' and yet they're among the greatest songwriters of their time. I think this says something about the reductionist approach to music theory, and maybe to a lot of other things as well.
Eddie Van Halen couldn't read music, either. Seems like the great ones just use the instruments to express what they're feeling. (And, as opposed to the chicken/egg question, we know that instruments, however simple, came before sheet music. So ...)
Learning everything there is to know about grammar and vocabulary doesn't mean you'll be able to write a great literary work. It's the same with music, it's a talent to be able to express yourself like that, which is why many studio musicians schooled in theory cannot actually write successfully
Sure, Paul and his fellow Beatles couldn't read music, but opera singer Ezio Pinza and singer/ actress Shirley Jones never learned how to read music either.
Just watched a programme on the making of Pet Sounds followed by a concert in 1976. Wonderful stuff except for Mike Love prancing around the stage like a big girls blouse !
The Beach Boys, led by Brian Wilson, basically created a new version of rock'n'roll music, using repeating rhythms, and phrases ... to the point that it caught the attention of the four lads from Liverpool, whom made a very specific point of recreating it on subsequent albums. And, yet, somehow, Brian Wilson had never heard the term "ostinato" before? Ok.
you can kind of tell that there was still that rift between Carl and Brian here and sadly it probably existed 'till the end. Carl was very hurt by comments made in Brian's "autobiography".

"And you know, the (....) in Vietnam are so shattering, so real." Thanks, anybody.
The first one is "I guess that sort of really stood out to me" and the second sounds like "the sequences in Vietnam". I think he's alluding to the Vietnam scenes in Forrest Gump.
Is this from a documentary? If so, where can i find it? 😁
It's from the Forrest Gump VCD 2 disc version from 1995. This is the complete segment with Brian and Carl. I wish there was more :(

All three of the Wilson brothers seemed to have a great deal of depth. I like to think that Carl was a seeker of peace and spiritual truth.
