Wrist Drop and the Radial Nerve

  • This video is all about #wrist_drop. It will take you through the anatomy, causes and overview treatment options. I've divided the anatomy into two separate sections for my different audiences. The simpler version is at the beginning, and a more detailed version comprises the second half. It's a complex topic - but when you get your head around the wiring - and this is especially for the medical students - you'll be better placed to understand the clinical examination of the arm! Huge thanks to my 'model' and their 'iphonographer' - a real challenge doing this 'virtually''.

This is very interesting, thank you for your lecture. I was able, I think, to identify my problem. I think it is the Axillery Nerve in my right arm, which, as you correctly stated, was a result of my incorrect sleeping posture.
Would you have any advice for me to alleviate my problem? I like weight training, this is how I cured my Tennis Elbow years ago, and so became an advocate of weight training since. Thank you!

Hi Simon Thankyou for your very informative video... I have had this issue with my right hand for almost 1mth now, I had a the exact same issue with my right foot exactly 1 year ago, the kinda sorted itself out with very little help. I did a nerve conduction test with my foot & it apparently had something to do with my (L4-L-5) I see a neurologist every 3mths since I was diagnosed with epilepsy a few years ago, I'm 42yrs old & was wondering how if there is any correlation between both my hand & foot. TIA btw) I woke up to my foot-drop 1 morning, but with my hand someone drove up the back of my car while I was sitting at the intersection 1 day

Thank you for sharing this video with us. It took me about seven months to fully recover, and now I am considering having the plate removed. However, the doctor mentioned there is a possibility of affecting the radial nerve again. Do you have any advice?

    Hello Dr.
I suffered a badly broken humerus high up in the arm (judging by your diagrams, more or less where the nerve wraps around). When a rod was being inserted in my first surgery, the lower humerus subsequently shattered too. It was only after the second surgery to repair this damage was completed, that the surgeon saw that the head of by radial bone was also broken.
The second surgery was 10 weeks ago. Sadly I am still waiting for a third surgery to fix the elbow (radial head) as the surgeon needs to wait for the lower humerus to be strong / stable enough first.
I have complete wrist drop and no upward flexion in fingers and particularly thumb. I have seen very very little improvement in the 10 weeks. Are you able to offer a 'guesstimate' on total recovery time given that I must yet have more surgery and recover from that before starting physio? Is this likely to be months or even a year or more?
    Thank you

I had something like this after a certain vaccine booster (no conspiracy theory - apparently any vaccine can have this side effect). I had the injection in my right arm and my left wrist/grip went limpish and weak, possibly slightly numb forearm too. It developed a day or two after the jab, and it slowly recovered over the course of a month.

I was diagnosed with radial nerve palsy (wrist drop) at the ER. They recommended I see a neurologist to follow up and gave me a wrist brace. I don’t have insurance, am in the US, and can’t afford a neurologist. It started in July I believe from sleeping wrong or my daughter sleeping on my shoulder/arm the night before I awoke with this issue. It has gotten slightly better, I can move my thumb and extend my fingers straight outward but not hyper extend them still or really lift my wrist fully. Is this something that will go away on its own? That is what I was told by a family member who works as a radiologist and consulted the hand surgeon in her building but I’m just terrified it won’t go back to normal.

Hi...did you have intense pain to start with too?im in exact same position-my son slept on my elbow(inside)woke up and it gradually got worst-the pain-its been a week. Did the pain go away? My wrist is dropped..

I didn't feel any pain, but if you still need a brace, Bracability sells a pretty nice one for 80 bucks. That's what I have currently. I'm 2 weeks in and it feels like it's never going to heal, all I did was sleep on it wrong :(
