The best thing about this video for me... is how much fun they were having playing this stellar performance... you see it in their eyes, and in their smiles... they were "killin' it" and having a blast while doing so... doesn't get much better than that for a touring rock band...
Have never, ever seen Robin look like he is having as much fun as he is having in this. He seems to just be having the time of his life up there. he also seems really in tune to the audience.
.....CRIMINALLY underrated, to this DAY - Message From The Country, is a near-MASTERPIECE (and more or less, the TRUE Electric Light Orchestra debut.....)
New Years Eve 1979, Los Angeles, The Fabulous Forum, 2nd row, front and center. One of the very best shows I saw in the 70's. You'd hear something on the radio, you'd get the record, and a lot of times it was hit and miss when performed live in your face. Not these guys. SOLID EVERY TIME.
I always thought Robin Zander was a man of a million voices...plus he has a son and a daughter both named Robin Zander and he's stayed married to a Playboy Playmate for right at 30 years.... he's basically a super-hero without the cape.
In 1979...everyone was going disco. The Stones went disco with "Emotional Rescue." Kiss went disco with "I was made for Lovin' You." Hell they even tried to take the Beatles to disco with the Bee Gees and the "Sgt Peppers" movie. Everyone went disco EXCEPT for Cheap Trick who kept on rockin'.
This song was written by a guy called Roy Wood who was huge in the UK in the early 70's in various bands. The "California" reference in the song title was down to an area in the city of Derby in the English, East Midlands where Roy Wood was born called California.
Imo, THE best live rock album. All the great parties, early 80's used to play this. Saw them in London 5/6 times. Intro...'Epic recording artists Cheap Trick', followed by Hello There...emblazoned in my mind forever.
Grew up not too far from Rockford, Ill. . Greatest group of all time (IMO). Rick is one of the greatest guitarist, Robin's vocals are awesome, Tom is a Master on the bass, and Bun E is such an underrated drummer Only music I listened to in highschool and 40+ years later still my preferred music to listen to.
You either loved them or hated them. They were divisive. I saw them for the first time at Kiel Opera House in St. Louis in 1978 (3500 seats...maybe...first concert without my mother). Ken Burns should do a documentary on them!
Celebrity theater Phoenix AZ? I was there too! I believe that was in the round too. Only time I went to a show there. Ushers were @$$#0!e$. Show was great as usual. Saw them 2 years earlier in a community college theater with only 100 or so people. It was Illinois and way below zero. They did two shows. Stayed for both. Got some picks and a harmonica that Bun E. used during a solo break from the kit. Haven't seen them since the 25th anniversary show in Rockford. My hearing probably can't take it anymore.
Same here..driving around town in my friends mother’s Camaro.. Surrender, and Van Halen rattling the paper core speakers while dreaming of owning a Porsche 924. Sleeping out for KISS and Cheap Trick tickets that cost $7.50. Wondering who I would ask to prom and what college I would get into?
@Nathaniel Adams Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan and Roy Wood! Nobody can beat them. Don't even try. Yeah rock on Birmingham! ( Cheap Trick took a good stab at it and they were good. But ummmmmm sorry. The Move got you beat!)
Just emptied a second restaurant kitchen quality extinguisher and watched it come back in the window it was climbing out of. A hundred yards away from the kitchen it came from.
from day one I think Cheap Trick would play your garage for a few people and completely blow away the neighborhood even the cops would show up for a good time 😜

Awesome remake of "The Move" classic.
“ Goin to a party meet me on after school” God how I wish I could go back to those days….

Written by one of the best of the 60s and 70s music. SIR ROY WOOD.
Amazing songwriter. Amazing musician.
THE MOVE wrote so many catchy pop-rock songs -- this one given a great reading by Cheap Trick.
.....CRIMINALLY underrated, to this DAY - Message From The Country, is a near-MASTERPIECE (and more or less, the TRUE Electric Light Orchestra debut.....)
Perfect rock band; walls of sound, great vocals and harmonies and great stage presence
Best sounding live concert ever.
How can this have only 11k views? Among the best live rock n roll performance bands of all time. And a sick tune to boot.
11,000 views because everyone can't be as cool as a cheap trick fan
Amazing band, amazing song !
It's at 158k now
People just don't know what good rock is 🥴
The magnetism of Robin Zander, the charisma of Rick Nielsen ... and the tunes!
Knocks me out how Robin sings like that while effortlessly playing rhythm guitar right in the pocket

I was born and raised in California and consider this my own personal theme song. Thank you Cheap Trick. Rock on boys!
Written by a Brit, though! And recorded first by British group, The Move! 🤣
the "move" wrote this... if you have not seen the video, its a hoot ! (jeff lynne from E L O and a few others are in it)
I love you so much Robin
Look up message from the country by the move - awesome song
Me too! Born and raised in San Jose, just like the song says!
That VOICE!!!!!
ravello99, I KNOW right? AMAZING! The range is unmatchable, (my opinion alone probably, but, oh well, lol)
I always thought Robin Zander was a man of a million voices...plus he has a son and a daughter both named Robin Zander and he's stayed married to a Playboy Playmate for right at 30 years.... he's basically a super-hero without the cape.
Robin also has two older children, Holland and Ian. Holland also has an amazing voice and range like her dad.
One of the loudest bands I ever saw OUTSTANDING
Your comment just made me think of the great quote in Spinal Tap- “World’s Loudest Band.” 🤣lol.

Pure kickass music, as I fondly remember it!👌👍🏻
America's premier Rock and Roll band!

This has got to be one of the greatest videos shared on this platform. Great quality and so iconic. Love this.
It’s amazing to think that this was from 1978. One of my buddies played this constantly.
Man THIS was the party song!
It all came together on this tour. Slogging it out in bars and bowling alleys in the Midwest, and then...Budokan!
Originally released in 1972 by The Move, who later had hits as ELO, you must give credit where its due.
The best band ever!!!
As a kid I read the credits on heaven tonight thinking R. Wood was Ron Wood 😄 but I Later thank Cheap Trick for getting me into The Move

One of the great rock and roll voices.
If I'm not mistaken, Tom introduced the 12-string bass.
John Paul Jones of Zeppelin played one. Tom worked with the designer and manufacturer on his.
