Deee-Lite is a house and club/dance group known for their 1990 crossover smash "Groove Is In The Heart," dance chart hits “Power Of Love,” “Good Beat,” and their albums ‘World Clique,’ ‘Infinity Within,’ and ‘Dewdrops in the Garden.’
Deee-Lite was formed in 1986 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn by vocalist Lady Miss Kier and multi-instrumentalist Super DJ Dmitry and became popular in the New York club scene as a vibrant and lively dance act known for their unique Holographic Techno Soul, psychedelic light show, and innovative art direction. Jungle DJ Towa Towa officially joined the group in 1989 contributing production on the first album and both songwriting and production on the second. Deee-Lite broke up in 1993 but all three artists continue to deejay to this day.
We didn't know how good we had it.
Or how bad things were going to get.
It went by so quick
We knew 🎉
I did not know I was going to burst into tears from a UA-cam comment today. Sigh.
Yes we did.
It's criminal that Deee-Lite were not bigger they they were!
Hell yeah
Only in the mindset that bigger is better!
the two dudes went on there own careers and were pretty successful
This group definitely deserved alot more attention.
John armada I have a huge collection of Towa Tei. Love his music.
they were ahead of their time
True that
Absolutely!, They are extremely talented,
Really? They were fucking huge. MTV played Groove Is In the Heart so much it made me hate it. Your comment only shows you weren't there. Ok, zoomer.
As a songwriter myself, I don't think most people realize how hard it is to actually write a happy, fun , upbeat song and have it work. Sad or angry is easy, but to get this kind of mood takes a very specific approach.
Well... Depending on how you See a Thing.... ...🤭
Depends on the person
💯
100%
This group is absolutely awesome!! I have loved their music for decades!!!
I’m 25 just getting into deee lite absolutely obsessed ahead of their time Fs ❤❤❤
No they were very much of their time & what a great time in history it was to be young. I'm glad to say I lived through it.
Not.
Lady Miss. Kier not only was a highly talented singer but also a damn good dancer.
You forgot to mention lookwise absolutely delightful.
@@jeromelambe2449
I still am in love with her.
She has it all I think.
She worked as a gogo dancer before she started dee-lite, stopped designing clothes because she loved it so much and then joined the group !!
It was a really refined and perfected version of how people danced back then. Going to a club in New York back then was a spectacle to behold dance wise.
Fact: I saw Deee-Lite live with Bootsy Collins on bass in 1991 at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Groove Is still in my Heart.
Maybe you have come recordings from this concert?
fun-fact!
Wow!!
@deeegorgeous SORRY I don’t do come recordings. That’s a private thing
.
Deee-Lite still presents the feeling of an easy life of the beginning nineties! Just marvelous! 😊😊😊
Well said 👍
Marvelous! Ooohwahhh!
So so true
This is some groundbreaking shit. It’s almost 30 years old and still fresh.
You know it.
I played some of this for a 19 year old rave chick, she dug it of course. Us Olds were once Youngs and we had great times.
Agree, it's so well done It's crossed over into the realm of timeless. It will always sound fresh
Music was like this in Europe 30 years ago though. And a lot of influence came from Chicago and Detroit. It just took the rest of America 30 years to catch up.
Check out this interview from 94. Halfway through she lists who she played alongside -The Orb, Orbital, Aphex Twin, Masters at Work. All been big for 30 years or more in Europe.
This group was so far ahead of its time they are still ahead of the curve today. Such an awesome group!!!!
There is no curve today. Today's music is industrialized rip offs of true artists of the past. The reason why so many are discovering better older music ... is because it was better.
This era is over, like the whole damn Hollywood clan!
I really miss her and the sound her group had !!!!
Underrated? Broke my heart when everyone called them One Hit Wonder! Between Dee Lite (Ms Kier) and Sneaker Pimps (Ms Ali) people didn't know what the were missing!
Ms Kier, I raise my glass to you for all the great memories, your music and your drive!
One of the sexiest dancers of alltime. She was so naturally fluid in her movements and damn gorgeous. Very underrated.
That woman would look hot in a burlap sack.
She spent a lot of time as a club/ go-go dancer. That style of dancing was very common at the time
@@alfresco4976 she is so beautiful.
Kieran, nom de guerre Lady Miss Kier. She had her own unique style, weird, kind of funny, but in the pocket, and totally her own, that's what made it good!
@@alfresco4976 she's.not.a.woman.get.real.
You could tell me that this was recorded yesterday and I'd believe you. Timeless beats and a timeless look. I hope that Deee-Lite will have a second coming (as Kate Bush is now) because if anybody deserves it, they do.
AGREED!
While they'll never reunite, I _did_ hear something rather shocking a few weeks back that could hint that they're being rediscovered: Their third album, _Dewdrops in the Garden_ has apparently overtaken _World Clique_ sales-wise. If true, that's no small feat: ""Groove is in the Heart" was their one truly massive hit from _World Clique_ and that album was heavily promoted by Elektra Records. In comparison, new (read: younger) fans are heralding _Dewdrops_ as one of the greatest underground rave classics that had no promotion at all outside of the band funding and touring the big raves of the mid-1990's.
@@giggles7179 I wrecked a perfectly good car with Dewdrops! It took me awhile, but I/m okay now. Go Girl!
The 90's will have some Stranger Things-esque callback I'm sure eventually lol. I'll do it if no one else does eventually.
Lady Miss Kier's musical and visual aesthetic is timeless.
FUCKING A. again.
@@BradleyVolk3 Timeless.
What a gem!!
Es de otro planeta...literalmente lo digo.
I'm seeing this for the first time in 2024 and I feel like I've struck gold.
nyc in the 90's...if you missed it, man you FUCKING MISSED IT!
AGREED!!!
mary gent
mary was there. mary knows. nyc's last gasp before 9/11 and hipster oblivion.
SO TRUE!!!!! NOTHING LIKE IT!! WHAT AN ERA!
Wish I'd been there.
Generalissimo X AGREE!!! Goddamn, it was a fucking fun time!!!!!
Just so you know, there is Lady Miss Kier before Lady Gaga. Proud to have dance to this in the 90s. I still have the cassette.
lol lady gaga is shit
One of the most under rated groups of the 90's.
I miss them I like it and want more danceable music similar
No, they were are not. Music TV and radio stations played them over and over.
And "underrated" is an overused word in the last few years, and it's time to retire it.
@@Ellie-v9fSoundcloud is full of dance music produced by great talents. You won't find them on youtube though.
They got a lot of AirPlay on MTV Europe though....
I never even heard this song from them.
You know kids, you can put Deee-lite back into the public conscience by making their music popular again.
Kier is just drop dead gorgeous
Nothing like a late 80s/early 90s NYC dance sitch. Warms my cold dead heart.
This is one of my favorite songs to dance to in the morning when no one's around.
I know...me too :-)
Alyssa Stehle 😏
I can see you!!!
Besides being "my jam", when I don't feel like working out, this song will get me up off of my ass and I love mimicking Lady Kier's moves. It's a great warm up song!
What's your favorite song to dance to in the night when people are around?
You should do whatever you want though ❤
Dee lite was so underrated
Omg yeah
Totally! She's way more talented than Madonna or any other female who touted herself as a vocalist from that era. Lady Ms. Kier is beautiful and could sing and dance her ass off!
Indie Sindie so true!!
Elvis Presley was so underrated
@tinylilmatt p
This is why I love UA-cam
Down into the nostalgia rabbit hole... you can get lost for hours. ;D
Reminiscing is good for your mind and soul, nothing wrong with it if it makes you happy. :)
I watched it on MTV for the last time 30 years ago in Russia. although no, on UA-cam 5 years ago). and here it is again. youtube, spare me.
@ Jose Montana: UA-cam is great when they stop playing ads during videos. Very annoying. 🤬😖 They should play those useless ads that no one pays attention to before or after the music videos.
That's a good reason
This is the real House Music! Only the best, the top, the real creators of a new way of music! Simply the best!
Yep. I believe theres a shit load of her recordings in the 90s to mid 2000s in all those LA clubs: Giggles, Wings etc
God, if you could have only been there while music like this and 90s living was just starting. Thank GOD I was born in 1970!!!!!!

This group was all about fun. In their day they were, very, groovy. Very, now. Very, new. And very, "Deee-liteful." Also very short lived and very, deserving of more success. Thank you, "lady Kier."
This song changed my life. Deee-Lite has changed my life. They're amazing !
I remember well when this track and album came out. Definitely inspired me to get into dance music approximately 1990
Mesmerizing...
i dont think there are any decent human brain or soul that would enjoy the huge piece of musical garbage that "groove is in the hearth" is.... but this song is a pretty nice dance house composition i must say.
You got that rite doll😆
1990 I was a sophomore in high school. Living my best life. This music was everything ! Acid jazz, lots of colors, dancing clubs and having lots of fun💃🏾.
They deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame !!!!!!
there should be a special hall of fame with *just* them, B52s, DEVO, and Talking Heads, and maybe Les Rita Mitsouko. They all made pop music that was deeply psychedelic and free, totally a class of their own.
I saw Deee-Lite a few times, they were always very funky! Once I saw them in Malibu at a tiny club, on a very tiny stage, a few feet away from me when I wanted. Love them!
They were so far ahead of everyone that no one could catch up.
Fr i heard Groove in the heart and thought it came out in this era of time 😭
It’s 2020 and I still feel this jam Dee-lite was so good
good music is timeless, we're still jammin' to Bach and Beethoven and the Beatles

This was the soundtrack to my life as I transitioned from high school to college. Even got my roommate into this album and he was a die hard Hip Hop guy.
There are some classic cameos in this video
Bootsy Collins
Shelia E
Willie Ninja
This is a fierce song that seems to have flown under the radar.
+pendavis89 -Where is Sheila E.? If you're referring to the woman playing the bongos, that isn't her.
Not in the New York club scene back in the 90's I used to go to.
where's sheila e????
Other cameos include Prince, Meryl Streep, Bruce Springsteen, Jack Nicholson, Joe Montana and too many others to list.
Willie Ninja xoxoxo
She was a delight... club queen
I heard this classic on hot 97 fm, in NY. There were dj remixes every Saturday night. From 1991, 1992 (awesome year), 1993. 1994 sucked, everything died. I did not have cable. So I saw this video on MTV international, ch 47, telemundo, hosted by Daisy Fuentes. Another show was 2nd generation. Hosted by Andy Panda and Tony Moran. 2nd generation was MTV affiliated, on ch 11 in NY. Another show was Video Music Box. First on ch 31 then on ch 25, uhf on broadcast tv. Wow what an era. I acquired dee lites cd at the mall in Watertown NY. During my army days. I could never find the cd in my neck of the woods. What fun!
You listened to the all night house party on hot 97 with djs Glen Friscia and Jeff Romanowski. There are many sets available on UA-cam
@@spamham1976 You are correct! And thanks for the info!
i think I (and the rest of the world) were so obsessed with "Groove is in the Heart", we (certainly me) forgot just how damn good the rest of "World Clique" is as an album. When "Groove... " finally turns up at track 8, you hardly remember exactly why you put the album on , cos you get totally caught up in all the other great tracks. if discos and night clubs even get to exist in this day and age, i recon you could still play this and fill the dance floor

"World Clique" was a masterpiece!
*Why Deee-Lite will never reunite as told by Miss Lady Kier*
"I needed to address this as many people don’t understand why Deee-lite won’t tour …i’ll just say this…we all live in seperate countries, we have very different lifestyles and tastes in music and we broke up because we weren’t getting along . I never discussed my lyrics with the other two while i was in the band for the entire time, and we had very different philosophies on life then and now …I hope the fans can understand"
sad htey did great music smh
I can understand, yet it's sad because they made great music together
I might have gone with "hey, we thought the braided pigtails with sideburns look was hot, but it never caught on so..."
Her breather is rollion with me a day once math geo-space and powerplant laws and earbuds will sound .

These classic beats & songs never get old !!!!
This whole album is still in heavy rotation in my world in 2024🎉
The follow-on record "Infinity Within" is also on my heavy rotation list.
Even thirty years after the release of this album they are still unbeatable and thirty years ahead
Still sounds fresh and unique AF in 2021. Love it!

I’d been trying to remember this song for literally years and years. My HS aerobics teacher used to play for us. Finally found it!
1990....and this was a hit. And still is.
Wow, it's still so good! I used to listen to this cassette often on my crappy Walkman in 1991. Then after not hearing it for about a decade, I relistened to it on some good speakers in the early 2000's & it was like listening to it all over again. Other than the obvious overplayed "Groove is in the Heart" (& occasionally "What is Love?"), the album didn't get nearly enough exposure that it deserved! This song was always 1 of my favorites on the album. I wasn't old enough at the time, but I bet this was a blast to dance to at clubs!
It was great dancing to this at clubs!!
i've only just discovered this song, Power Of Love, Runaway, as well as others this past week. i was 6 when Groove Is In The Heart came out and i thought that's all they did and they were a one hit wonder. Can't believe after 30 years i didn't know how good this band actually was. I'm a huge house music fan too 🤦🏼♂️
haa nice! i got this cassette in a pawn shop in jacksonville NC in 92/93. ive never heard it on a good system tho.. always loved this album. rave days!!

It was a blast! I was 20? I was friends with a DJ at a night club and he played all my fave Dee lite tracks ,I was a happy girl on the dance floor!
Having a two-person dance party in an elevator with the Lady Miss Kier is near the top of my bucket list.
I found my mum's cd of 'World Clique' that she loved more than anything, and I remember discovering it and falling in love with Dee-Lite the same way my mum did. It forever changed me and for me nothing will top this album. Lady Miss Kier's vocals are incredibly amazing and the beats are life altering. Music nowadays just does not compare to this. Forever grateful to mum for keeping such a great album because it truly is one of the best albums in my opinion.
Yes, Lady Miss Kier, Dmitry and Towa Tei! Miss those Club MTV days!
Dance floor massive! When it came to house music.. the late 70’s 80’s & 90's were the best years!
What a blessing for those who’ve truly lived them!
So glad I was a young man in the 90's. World Clique still sounds good today.
Could you imagine being any of them, coming up from nothing and having that kind of pull and access on the scene in New York back then?
This is timeless!!

The best ever from the 90s.
I don't listen to dance music all that much but this band is GREAT
The music still sounds fresh!
durbeyfield It has Towa Tei who is still making good music.
This was a track of liberation... they were one of the top artists who truly lived the experience and felt and supported the LGBTQ community and the house/latin/ reggaeton vibe. I'm a heterosexual woman but artists like them opened my mind as a teen to the whole scene without judgement. Anyone notice that people were dancing without cellphones? Dance like no one is watching.... true courage! I'm sorry for those who missed it... and haters gonna hate. Hats off kittens... thank you!
You are perfectly correct! It's so fucking lame when people bring out their cellphones. Like WTF do they do that for?
It’s horrible because now you can express yourself and act a fool cuz you never know if some wack ass iPhone bopper is recording. We need to start teaching society the right etiquette
Reggaeton? What are talking bout? This awesome music doesnt have anything to with that shi..... Ty noise.
@@MrMackmonster that was a typo... sorry you're so easily offended lol. I meant to say Reggae vibe. You can hear it in thier track "Two Clouds above Nine"... that's IF you really know their music.
