As someone who has worked in pools for more than 10 years I can tell you that this happens a lot. My advice to people who are looking for a pool company always check license and go with the biggest company. Bigger company means more money if they should happen to mess up. Never ever pay more than 10-15 percent before pool is completed. When it’s completed get two different pool inspectors to inspect pool. If it’s good then you pay them the remaining balance.

As a contractor myself, you go into the business knowing you’re probably just going to take a loss for the first 2 years or so because of overhead and you always have to take into account that something could go wrong. Also please to anyone thinking of getting a pool, NEVER GET FIBERGLASS, it’s terrible for the environment and because it’s cheap it won’t last you more than 20 years before a huge issue arises with it. At least with plaster you can repair small cracks that go up to 1 1/2 feet. Pebble is the best overall due to durability IF INSTALLED CORRECTLY if not it will crack and fall apart within a year of installation.
you don't know anything about fiberglass pools if you think that, i service multiple fiberglass pools that are 40+ years old, only thing they had is some refinishes. The problem with most pools is the homeowner has no one take care of it so they go to shit.
Never been a contractor but I studied engineering and also did construction work through my life, my dad owns a counter top business and I have worked with countless contractors on both a work end and business end. Absolutely agree with what you have said here. It should be common sense but it's definitely not. A lot of people think they know but don't know. I don't know how many customers we had to tell "no, you cannot just set hot items on your solid surface (acrylic material) counter tops without damaging them" even after explaining the type of glue is used and the material that is used. It's a high end and durable plastic resin basically. It looks pretty and it can last forever, but it's not something you can just abuse. My dad would usually repair one or two issues before charging for solid surface repairs. He also usually tried to talk people that obviously weren't listening into the higher end quartz material, which really is damn near indestructible, instead.
My parents had a fiberglass pool installed in 1982. It started getting black marks on it around 2005 that drove my mom nuts. They called some people out and nobody would work on it. They had to fly a guy in who was an expert. He said if they drained the pool they risked it folding in on itself. Anyways their solution was to sell the house and move to one with a concrete pool.
@@skaughtsmith firstly a fiberglass wont fold, it MAY pop out of the ground but wont fold, the black marks were it just needing to be refinished....idk what the problem was with the companies they called but its really not that big of a deal to fix.
The crazy part of the story is that he really did know how to market his business extremely well. He could have just hired a few people who actually knew what they were doing and still made a lot of money. But he chose the get rich quick, screw everyone over, and live the Instagram lifestyle route.
This is the thing with these idiots: too stupid to calculate they're good enough bullshitters they can hire someone else & pay them peanuts to do the work and still make a ton of money .

What a pissed away opportunity
As someone with a Dad who runs a pool remodeling business, this makes my blood boil. Doing actual contracting work is HARD and takes effort. Some douche who has no clue what he’s doing should not be able to scam people like this, which is why licenses are important and CONFIRMING THEM before you contract is important from the customer side too.
A pool guy was doing the same thing here in Tampa and he was arrested recently and his bond is 2.8 million dollars. He tried to get the judge to reduce it and he said no.
0:54 Any contractor that calls himself and his henchmen "an intimate group of young hustlers" should have alarm bells ringing with every potential client.
I am completely put off by contractors showing off their “riches”. All it says to me is that they charge way too much for their services. Show offs are usually epic con artists.
Exactly. If you're that obsessed with showing off your wealth, money is likely the only reason you're in the business, and so you don't care about doing a satisfactory job.

Dumb idea to pay all of it for sure, but pretty much most construction/masonry jobs are going to require around half the cost up front or they wont even start the job or order the supplies needed.
@@someone-ji2zb in a high demand economy, maybe.. the way you get around that is you either place the money with a notary to be released with BOTH signatures, yours and theirs. or as job progress continues. there are ways. But shoddy work that won't pass inspection won't show until completion.
As an architect I always check new contractors social media and google them. If they show off their money it means generally 2 things: 1. They spend money as fast as it comes in so they are most likely to have no reserves when something goes wrong and disasspear from one day to another. 2. They most likely overcharge their customers for their own sake, not for quality. Needless to say, they never get a job from me. Another red flag is the high down payment. Never pay more than 20% an any job in advance, if that much. If they deliver the materials first, you can pay for them as soon as they are your property. But never pay labor in advance.
As someone who has been swimming before I can confirm with absolute certainty that those were in fact, unfinished swimming pools. . . And given my unique life skillset of being financially impoverished I cannot understand why anybody would pay for the pool entirely upfront.
It's really hard to feel sorry for people who'll write a check for tens of thousands of dollars without even doing the bare minimum of research on the contractor first. And, if you pay 100% up front, you may find that many contractors will lose all motivation to finish the job in a timely manner, as they'd spent your money long ago.
I advise Boards for apts. all the time to NOT pay off the contractor and they will do just that. Then call me and want me to finish a job I'm not qualified for, as we have such huge contractor demand in Canada right now that even the IDIOTS are busy. A scene ripe for rip off artists.
@@oil_painted_dessert your comment has absolutely nothing to do with mine. The laws you posted mr UA-cam lawyer also have nothing to do with the original post.
As I usually see people say on these videos definitely avoid paying contractors up front beyond an agreed-upon percentage, especially if it's the first time you're doing business with them. What I saw was a good system was a retired contractor say pay 40% up front, 30% halfway, 20% at the end, then the final 10% 30 days after the work is complete. That way everyone's honest and the builder has the motivation to keep it up through the job and to meet deadlines.
What's the difference between "at the end" and "when the work is complete? Personally, I require customer cover cost of all material and 50% of my labor up front.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

Good to hear this. Reading thru all the responsive, everybody has their own system, it's all over the map. You'd think there would a national standard, rather than what seems like the wild, wild west.
Respect to you sir. Advice like this this hopefully helps.
How do you go about checking licenses ?
@@eomyenom1 depends which state your in but for me I’m in NY so you go to the City website Department of state city license Center and you put company’s name and info.
Concrete with tile liner, the last for decades if maintained.
you don't know anything about fiberglass pools if you think that, i service multiple fiberglass pools that are 40+ years old, only thing they had is some refinishes.

@@Pete559Gaming not a good thing.
As an architect I always check new contractors social media and google them. If they show off their money it means generally 2 things:
The clips of him playing with his nipples on multiple occasions was priceless. 😂
