The Epic Solar Eclipse In Totality On A Backcountry Spring Canoe Trip

  • This is the first canoe trip of the season for me in 2024. The ice had just come off and all I had heard about on the news was the total solar eclipse that would cover parts of Ontario in darkness. At the last minute, after seeing that Frontenac provincial park laid within the path of totality, I decided that my first real canoe trip of the season would be me chasing the total eclipse of 2024. What a trip it would be!
At the time, I had no idea what I was doing, or how I would capture the eclipse, but I could not be happier or more excited to have been witness to such an incredible experience! During the eclipse, the clouds parted just enough to get some shots that I think really show the awesome beauty of this extraordinary event.
I sincerely loved this trip and could not be more happy to share this experience with you. What an incredible start to the paddling season! This is going to be an awesome year on the water.

Just wanted to thank everyone for all of the nice comments and support we’ve received recently. It’s all very much appreciated.
Just a side note on the drone footage - it was all taken outside of the parks boundaries either from crown or private land. Hope everyone enjoys the video and is heading back into the water. Should be an unbelievable year for paddling. We’ve got some big plans this season and will more than likely have very limited posts for the foreseeable future. Paddle all summer and edit all winter 🎥 🛶 Safe travels everyone.

Probably the best nature videography on UA-cam. Terrific editing, storytelling, and music. I do macro photography of wildflowers and have found the same fascination with another dimension of reality as you. Keep up the great work.

I have to say you are the BEST NARRATOR I have heard on utube. Your style is relaxing with expression not over done, no uptalk or vocal fry which seems to be the new trend amongst young folk these days and is very annoying to listen to I might add. Also you dont yap on. Its just perfect. Your appreciation and capture of nature is splendid! Thankyou so much for all your effort, it is indeed appreciated. Warm regards from Aus 💚 Ps. if you are looking for any music for your vids checkout Judah Earl and Tony Anderson areexcellent creators. 👍

Epic! Your videos are next level quality. That porcupine's face, the spider, the turkey! And your eclipse footage was worthy of National Geographic. We are in Oklahoma and had 95% totality. Thank you for giving us all this once in a lifetime view!

I just wanted to tell you that the videography in this episode was just STUNNING! I lost my older brother two days ago, and needed to be reminded that in the midst of DEATH, there is abundant LIFE- and you did that with this amazing footage: wildlife in abundance, and the “death” of the sun to be overcome by glorious light! Thank you- you touched me and are helping to bring me out of grief to joy once again…THANK YOU SO MUCH…(you may not have known the impact your videos have, perhaps you do now) Be blessed….

From the visuals to the score to even the thumbnail, that was a brilliant piece of work buddy. Clouded up here too so this was great. Did you get a solar filter or just risk it?

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  5 місяців тому +1

Thanks guys. Appreciate that very much. I decided to just risk it. I had an ND filter on and stopped down to f22 when it was a little brighter out. Opened it up when it was near totality. I actually didn’t even realize you could burn up your sensor until i listed to a podcast about cameras on the way home. Kinda made me glad I hadn’t heard that before. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Ashley got a head start on your latest blockbuster so I have some catching up to do this week. Can’t imagine editing a 4 hr monster. That stresses me out just thinking about it. Hope you guys have an awesome spring back on the water. 🛶 🎥

What a special way to kickstart a new paddle season Keenan, with not just the eclipse, but the variety of birds and the beaver in a tree! It looked like such a great group of lakes with pretty easy portages. Give a few big 'good girl' pats to Betty Lou for me - what a well behaved little companion both on land and in the canoe. @@CanoeTheNorth my footage doesn’t hold a candle to yours but I’m still excited to create and share! I’m about to head out for a second spring trip this week so editing will have to wait a bit. Music is definitely a matter of taste but don’t water down your style to suit more people. I think music adds so much more depth of emotion to your stories. You can’t please everyone, so may as well create what comes from the heart! Thanks again for the chat and video.
      Cheers!

    Joel 2:28-32
    New King James Version
    God’s Spirit Poured Out
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward
    That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your old men shall dream dreams,
Your young men shall see visions.
29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants
I will pour out My Spirit in those days.
30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
31 The sun shall be turned into darkness,
    And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
32 And it shall come to pass
That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
    Shall be [a]saved.
For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance,
    As the Lord has said,
Among the remnant whom the Lord calls.

Very cool! I was working that day but where I was it completely clouded over a couple of hours prior to the eclipse and even sprinkled rain for a bit. It was only a 3/4 eclipse for my area anyways but I knew when it happened cause it got quite dark for awhile. Thanks for bringing us along for the experience.

Lovely imagery, again. More quick labels of species would help non-Canadians enjoy it more, well me anyway.
The issue again tho', and ironic considering you talk of beautiful spring flowers, is that she is not here!! Again!! Despite me raising this point before. Yes I admit I look more at the stunning scenery when you do these alone, but..... well just 'but'.
And that darkening sky from the eclipse, that was my heart that was, when I saw you on you own again. I mean what do I do, complain to UA-cam, start a lawsuit??
Seriously, lovely photography etc etc, its just a million times better with the 'English Rose!

Happy to begin another season with you! Back in the '90s my late husband and I hiked in Frontenac Park frequently but strangely never put the canoe in the water there. A favourite 10 km hike took us through lovely country. The dog quartered back and forth ahead of us and probably travelled 20 km to our 10. Muddy, happy and exhausted, he was asleep before we left the parking lot. I miss those days with him terribly so thanks for taking me along with you! Frontenac Park is part of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere.

Ahh that’s a nice comment. It looked to me like Frontenac was an amazing place to go for a hike. Seemed almost like more of a hiking destination than a paddling destination in some ways.

Oh my, it will be hard to eclipse that trip...lol (pun intended)
Yes, that was an immature bald eagle. We have golden eagles in Washington but rare to see. I know of a nest and I go each year.
I was in my travel trailer in Arizona during the eclipse...got 60% but it was still such a thrill. I inadvertantly looked through the plastic vent cover on ceiling of trailer and it allowed me to see the eclipse filtered through dark green colored plastic...I had no special glasses. I took episodes of 3 to 4 second looks just to be safe.
I don't think I can go all summer without your videos....please I may have withdrawals.....
God Bless you and Ashley and the fur children.

This is the first professional quality footage of the eclipse that I've seen! I feel like I got to see it from the woods too! I spent the eclipse running with the dogs on a beach in New Brunswick, it was so cool watching day turn to night and back into day while I ran. Your eagle was definitely an immature Bald Eagle. You can an immature Bald from a Golden Eagle by the head size. Bald Eagle heads are quite large relative to their body. Golden's are much smaller.
The "crows" were in fact Ravens which you can see by their diamond shaped tails.
