Classic Canadian Canoe trip + INCREDIBLE CLOSE ENCOUNTER with a Moose - Quetico Provincial Park

  • If ever there was a place that represented a quintessential Canadian canoe trip, Quetico would be it. In northwestern Ontario, bordering the Boundary Waters in the US, Quetico is one of the world’s premier canoeing destinations. With dark, clean water, unbelievable fishing and camping there’s hardly anywhere else I’d rather visit.
    In the early summer of 2023 I decided to make the journey to Quetico for another canoe trip. What a trip it was. Canoeing and portaging through lakes, rivers, bogs, and burns. With amazing fishing along the way. I also had an incredible moose encounter early on in the trip to get things going. This was a trip to remember. As I was editing this film I was already planning my next trip there. Quetico… I already can’t want to go back.

    Good god, you made the drive for this trip and then the Yukon...I couldn't. And I just have to reiterate that your IBIS is so smooth it ticks me off a little. Tough to not get a look at that fish. Rapala quality is shit these days. Splendid video my friend, top drawer

      Thanks man. Appreciate it very much. Still have nightmares about not getting to see that fish but there’s always next time. Can’t believe that lure fell apart.
      I love driving so it’s never a big deal but man it would be nice to be a bit closer to places like Quetico. You might be a little jealous of the ibis but we’re a little jealous of your location. Always appreciate you taking the time to watch our videos. Thanks again.

      I was on Poobah twice in 1974 & 75. Quite the adventures yet back then we could use a small outboard to go up stream from twin falls up the river. Poobah fishing was the best in my life having to try to get away from the walleye! I also caught a very rare silver/blue northern we sent info to the authorities. Sad to see all the landscape change from fires. Beautiful area. Thanks for sharing!

    when you were slogging through that marsh/creek you almost looked like Humphrey Bogart in the African Queen, except you didn't have Ashley with you to play Kate Hepburn! and then when your fishing line began to run you took on Captain Quinn (Robert Shaw) in Jaws (Lou, we're gonna need a bigger canoe!) hahaha Lol. Ever thought of tackling some Quebec canoe trips? I don't know very much at all about Quebec, except I heard it is bigger than Alaska !

    Level up again, is it possible!? The overflow of sound and images, no music but only the splashing or snoring. The cello and your face while the rod's rambling on, epic choices man! Etc. Watching you both and dogs for 2 years now, have some experience outdoors so know what it feels like. And sure you take me there every time. It means a great deal to me so Thank you thank you thank you.

    Betty Lou cracks me up every time. I have never seen a lure come apart fighting a fish but have had a similar experience losing a big fish I never saw, assuming a Sturgeon broke me off. Thought I had snagged a log, so heavy! Photo/Videography off the charts as usual. Moose video was incredible, thought the first one was coming up for a neck scratch. Always look forward to your next adventure.

    Being a resident of Ontario (Perth area) I feel guilty for not having discovered all these prime canoeing/camping/fishing areas north of me while I was a younger man. I have never even been to Algonquin park, which is less than a 2 hour drive away. I lived in Alberta for a few years in the 1970's and did a lot of back country camping there, but my home province is still a blank to me. I'm 65 now, so maybe in my retirement years, I can discover more of Ontario.

    Really great video. Took my first trip to Quetico last June, completed the Hunters Island Loop. Our routes matched up on the Maligne and through Sturgeon. Fantastic fishing in Sturgeon as you illustrated. I camped on that tiny island at 52:20in sturgeon narrows. Would have loved to see that fish at the end. Heart breaker. And you did everything right and the lure failed ya! Nothing you can do about that…

    Stunning production! Slogging does give a wonderful feeling of accomplishment doesnt it; I would have chosen that route too.
    I used to fish for bass along the north jetty of Westport Washington with my father in his boat. Very dangerous, must keep the engine running to avoid a horrible death smashed upon the rocks. You repeatedly cast your squid in toward the rocks and quickly reel in. It was there...... I experienced it........ the unimaginable! I cast in and immediately it snatched the lure with such impact and force all I could equate it to is an out of control, speeding locomotive snagged it. The line snapped and flung back. I am 71 now and was probably 30 at the time, will always remember that, can still feel it. Turns out others have seen the monster bass who lurks in a cave in the giant jetty rocks, he's been seen with lures floating outside his mouth from others experiencing what I did. Hmmm bet the old monster is still there.
    BTW, loved the closing graphics with the two loons popping up their heads.....beautiful.

    Keenan - this was a pretty challenging canoe journey - you carried it just about as much as it carried you - lol I love Betty-Lou's excitement when you catch a fish! Does she get to have one of her own so knows how good they taste? I had to chuckle at her snoring as she sounded just like my late husband!! lol What a bummer to not get to bring that last fish in - might be a silly question but what happens to the fish now with that hook stuck in it's mouth? Happy canoeing!

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes Betty Lou does love fishing so so much. She’s quite the dog. I think most of the time especially when using barbells hooks that the hook will fall out of the fishes mouth when there is no tension keeping it set. Obviously sometimes it probably doesn’t work that way but hopefully more often than not.

    Great video as usual! That does hurt losing a big fish. My experience with sturgeon is that they are bottom feeders and don’t typically hit cranks but you never know I guess. If I was a betting man I would say you hooked into a really nice pike. Lots of fun either way fighting those big ones.

      Thank you. Yes I know what you’re saying about sturgeon being bottom feeders and not hitting crank baits but this was something different than I’ve ever experienced. I’ve caught lots of pike in the 40-50” range and although they do put up a good fight it was nothing like whatever this was. Maybe I foul hooked a huge pike??? I don’t think there are lake trout in sturgeon lake but maybe by chance it was a huge laker??? I’ll never know what it was but it was large and stronger than anything I’ve experienced. Still hurts loosing that one. Thanks very much for the comment.

      Thank you. Full disclosure we were given these packs by Ostrom. We really do love them though. Most comfortable packs we’ve used on canoe trips. We have the wabakimi and the barrel harness and they are both great. We like that they are custom sized which makes them more comfortable. Overall definitely recommend checking them out if you need a new pack.

My best friend Gary told me that Great Bear or Great Slave has Lakers that are 50 pound plus. He said 30 pounders are run of the mill. Check it out...there may be a big laker waiting for you on one of those two lakes.

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you. As far as mosquitoes on Betty Lou she does get bitten by mosquitoes but generally she does really well at avoiding them. At camp she can always go into the tent to get away from them if they are really thick. On the water they are generally not around so it's really just the portages which because she's always wandering through the grass and brush they are not really able to get her. The hardest time is loading and unloading the canoe but thankfully thats never too long. Normally most of the mosquitos seem to hang around my head net and leave her alone!
