This is so brilliantly shot, the performances are so real it's not like watching actors it's like someone just following these shady characters around filming their daily routine. Totally believable. So refreshing to watch something where the director understands reality and is aware of these kind of lives and people. Most directors nowadays just file through the film school on the gravy train with zero real life experience thinking that for a film to be gritty it needs to be grey and dimly lit with moody serious looking actors mumbling monotonous dialogue with fancy generic camera angles, shit like that is pretentious as it is superficial and synthetic giving the audience very little to relate to. People are getting so used to shit films (mostly pumped out on netflix) that they're starting to accept them by deluding themselves that such dumbed down shit is good when it aint. This film hasn't got a complicated plot but it doesn't need to have to hold my attention as it's so relatable in terms of how people interact with each other and I don't doubt that situations like this have and do occur all over the world. For someone that spends most of his time moaning about the dogshit standard of most modern films I'd say that this little scouse gem for me is a 10/10 all day.

This film is the most realistic depiction of what I imagine that life to have been at that point in time in that place. If you want grit and reality at that street level in the North West I'd imagine this is it. Would like to see more UK films like this as opposed to the stuff that sells in America which bears no relation to real life in England. Great to hear authentic English regional accents and if they're tough to understand in America, and even in other parts of the UK, then so be it.

I suggest Chopper (2000) starring Eric Bana, not many know this but it was actually his second acting role ever and is what many think propelled him into such a succcessful acting career (so much so he might be the next 007)

Oh and Franny was arrested last year while saving a cannabis crop from a burning building in front of fire fighters. The young lad who buys the gun got murdered at the weighing machine in wavertree and Ricky from this had been shot a few years before filming this. Mad how the director was able to persuade these guys to get involved in this way.

Remember watching this on telly and a few of the original scenes have been either deleted or heavily edited. It's still the best gangster film ever made in this country - can't get more authentic than getting proper rum lads to appear. That's a coup in itself lol. This is a really good description of life in Liverpool at the time as I seem this sort of shit with my own eyes as grew up there and seen this sort of shit ,this is nation wide not just Liverpool
