As Tench Coxe - one of the gentlemen tasked with WRITING the constitution and bill of rights at the Continental Congress back in 1788-89 - said so very well: " The powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty. The militia of these free commonwealths, entitled and accustomed to their arms, when compared with any possible army, must be tremendous and irresistible. Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom. Congress has no power to disarm the militia. Their swords, and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of Americans."

The B.O.R. (Amendments), was specifically written as law for the federal government to abide by. Militia clearly indicates at the time of the framing and now, military capable citizens and insures contemporary infantry capabilities for each individual.
The Founders knew that Government was as great a threat as any other, if not more. So much so, that the 2nd Amendment is the only one with the stipulation of "shall not be infringed"
My biggest concern with these angles is always that they’ll twist it to say, “you can keep the AR then but only in the home for defense, but as you point out the handgun isn’t useful and we therefore restrict the possession and carry of that.”
As Tench Coxe - one of the gentlemen tasked with WRITING the constitution and bill of rights at the Continental Congress back in 1788-89 - said so very well: " The powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty.
