- ELO - Electric Light Orchestra - Jeff Lynne - Songwriting Video Ideas.
This week I listened to nothing but ELO and tried to write a similar rock song. I came up with a few tips to help my fellow songsters. I was also challenged by the Subreddit, Song-A-Week, to write an OLD SCHOOL song. I think this fits the mold seeing how ELO would also incorporate classical instruments like violins and cellos as well.

Thanks for the comments and the love. -Ben
ELO is one of my favourite groups.
Want to write like Jeff Lynne? Make sure your music is light, and flows smoothly, like a cool wind on a beach at sunset. Or cool wind WHOOSHING through the streets of Birmingham.
And before you're done, make sure the words are simple enough for the average englishman to understand and relate to. You cannot have a pop song otherwise.
NotOrdinaryInGames - Great advice! I wish I would have included these thoughts.
I spent years trying to put Jeff's style into words.
I saw them at a huge stadium venue back in the 80s. Here in Cleveland we used to have these massive rock shows called The World Series of Rock. Each show would have four or five bands, three of which were legitimate headliners themselves. They were so fun. The ELO stage show featured a huge white spaceship that hovered over the band and slowly ascended to open the show. It was so exhilarating and exciting! Years later at a party here in the Cleveland area I met one of the cello players from the band who happened to marry a local girl in this area. I asked him about the show and he remembered a lot of really cool little details and shared them with me.
According to Bev Bevan, ELO's drummer, in his book "The story of the Electric Light Orchestra" their largest audience so far was in "Out of the Blue's" tour, in 1.978, in Cleveland Stadium, 78.000 people.
That was awesome Ben that was so ELO you really found your inner Jeff Lynne with that one Ben awesome mate I loved it my friend
Awesome Dude! Thank you very much! Keep on doing this format, please!!!!
What I noticed jeff lynne did a lot in ELO was go from major to minor on the same chord, a very Beatles sounding thing. Very cool!
Ya and Pink Floyd does that too
Elo is great. Love Livin thing. Very cool original. Super work
Great song; I've got it stuck in my head now.
ELO are awesome, nice song Ben!
Awesome info and great video...Long live Jeff Lynne's ELO
Thanks a lot. Long live, Jeff Lynne!
Love the story & the up tempo beat.
Great information Ben!!! Awesome video 😉👍
Well done!!!!!!!!!!!! I did like it a lot!!! And I'm a huge ELO fan.
Thank you very much, Jorge. I love ELO.
@@benaaronmusic , thanks for your reply!!!!!
Haha I always get a chuckle at that last bit... a mish mash of random comments! So funny!
Hey Ben, this is genius as usual! I’m playing a bit of catchup with your posts. Saw this one was ELO and had to click on it... I’m a huge ELO fan though I don’t admit that often. Lol
Enjoyed your “ELO-afied” original. It was catchy music and interesting lyrics.
I still get a kick out of your twin in the intro who always brings you the LPs! Haha! Good stuff my man! 👍🏻
Jeff Lynne had a killer 40 second demo thats on UA-cam called "2nd time around" it'd be badass to finish the song, you should try it, it'd be pretty cool
That's a great idea, man. I'll have to go find it and take a listen. Thanks for checking out my video.

@@benaaronmusic no prob man! I covered a few ELO tunes on guitar on my UA-cam page
Ok so all the songs I listened to today have been good and the queen one was good, but I think your really on to something with this one. I really like how you cut certain instruments parts out at times it gave it more flavor. Please give me more of that.
A great analysis of ELO, but the song sounds like a tortured version of Mr. Blue Sky.
Ed Collins I think that is the point!
Cannot wait for Roy Wood songwriting experiment.
Definitely got that ELP Vibe going Ben..very nicely done
Emerson, Lake & Palmer? ;-)
'Happy Anniversary' is a darn toot'n high calibre tune.
Thank you for listening to my ELO inspired song!

Cool song! The bounciness is a lot of fun
That was fun
Awesome ELO style song!
In my best Jack Nicholson voice, Ben: “You make me want to be a better commenter.” ;) I really admire your musicianship. You impress me as very dedicated to your craft, a great musician and songwriter! Respect for your ELO inspired song. Excellent! :) Janet
ELO! ❤️❤️❤️
Hmmm, might’ve been the late 70s now that I think about it.
Great job!
This is a great video! I like your taste in music a lot!! I hope to one day to edit as well as these videos are!!
YES ELO THE BEST!!!!
Thank you so much for listening and I also think ELO is the BEST!
-Ben Aaron
As alwasy a great Video!
Impressively crafted!
Like the video Ben, but I remember the early ELO stuff which was kind of freaky.
Funny how your song sounds more like a Macca song than a Jeff song!
#1 was a tip how?
A bit of Brian May too
not bad
Very much enjoy your channel. love to see your thoughts on our channel!
Ouch, it’s got everything Jeff Lynn would have wrote except a hook, decent story board lyrics, tuned guitars, intermittent vox harmonies, solis verb and fx, glue compression, mastering, and the ear worm wow factor or bling that makes a song like Jeff’s a hit also you are riding the blue sky’s cadence enough to make it sound like your obviously trying to sound like ELO and generally when “template writing” people latch on to the familiar that gives them the feeling they heard this song somewhere but that’s not enough to make it a good track
I'm not sure what I'm hearing, but it's not ELO. (I'm sorry)
My name is Ben Aaron. You're hearing Ben Aaron, not ELO.

Copying ELO is not possible.

Do the who
Now that's what I call a Strange Magic. Get the joke?
Sounds more like ragtime than Jeff Lynne to me. I wish it were this easy to get the Jeff Lynne sound. I'll keep searching
Always liked the Evolutionary Light Outlet band. Jeff had some cool lights up on stage.
