Not sure what happened with it, but I'm getting the feeling they're dead in the water. Really bummed about it too, I actually have a soft spot in my heart for each of those movies, Resurrection included

I actually don’t think it looks that bad for its time. Look at actual CG models from the 90s and their texture/material. They look so rubber like that its just as obviously fake. Funny story. I saw cgi ET first without knowing. So for years every time I saw the original version, I always wondered why he looked more stiff. I only learned about cgi ET today, and life makes much more sense now.
The worst thing about the 20th anniversary of ET is that they removed the drawn weapons held by soldiers and officers and replaced them all with radios. Which means you end up seeing people "holding radios" while clearly in a "ready to open fire" stance.
@@ipraytovodka Yeah. You can see an example of it in the clip at 8:50. Notice how the guy on the left is holding his radio. That is very clearly a guy holding a weapon of some sort with his finger off the trigger (safe). As the kids start flying, notice the guy on the right. He's also holding a "radio", but for some reason it clearly exerts some serious torque on his wrist as he sort of "gives up". Why would a radio, that is just slightly taller than his hand, do that? Because in the 1982 version, those weren't radios - they were full length shotguns.
Just to make it clear to everyone, all the releases of E.T. since at least 2012 have been only of the original 1982 version. The "enhanced" 20th anniversary version is not produced anymore. Some years after it was released, Spielberg said he regretted doing it and that he would never again make digital alterations like that to any of his films. Good on him for admitting his mistake, IMO.
I would really love if you guys took a look at some of the shots of the animals in the first Chronicals of Narnia series. Was a real blast from the past to see just how far we’ve come since those days of early “photo realistic” animal renders, compared to the amazing work now being done with fur and everything else that makes animals look almost real these days. Don’t get me wrong, Mr. and Mrs. Beaver look okay, but take a look at Mr. Fox, and also take a look at the great way they went from full CGI wolves to real wolves for 5 seconds, back to CGI…quite jarring 😂
yo those wolves are cursed from the originals - they added some real unease to the movie, but it was cool to see that way back when and see how the newer films adjusted the concept
@@josh29221 Absolutely, and it’s funny how just a couple of years can make a big difference, because we have The Golden Compass where the polar bear looks markedly better. But then you have the differences in advancement from company to company to consider as well. I think it’s be really interesting to see the boys do a VFXAR that covers the history of animal renders over the decades or even just over the past couple decades. So much good material they’ve already covered, but it’d be great to do more side by side comparison over time.
i remember seing a bts about them having to digitally replace the wagging tails of some dogs since they where supposed to be angry. that blew my mind at the time.
For the record, I can actually tell you how they did the filming part of the ET clip since I'm the one in the grey hoodie (no joke). I was cast to be Michael's double for the anniversary edition and for the added shot of the older boys seeing the ship land, I looked straight into the camera cause I thought I heard "cut".
Also, for the flying bike scene, each one of the boys on the anniversary edition were shot on separate takes over a blue screen with a very smooth rig with a BMX bike on it (same bike for all boys) with like 4-5 people moving it around in conjunction with the camera to try and make it work with the existing background footage.
The breaking bad shot is mind blowing. Motion and physics is the hardest thing to make feel right with cgi in my opinion and that shot is an absolute masterclass.
8:40 - Niko’s comment here about _E.T._ now offering up two different kinds of jank (the original special effects vs. the “updated for its time but now it’s outdated again” remaster) reminds me of the fortieth anniversary remaster of _Star Trek_ (the original TV series). It gives you this weird whiplash of Shatner and crew crouching behind styrofoam rocks and holding plastic laser-guns on the one hand, and then space battles that are fully CGI on the other. I think taking a look at those changes might be a good subject for a future episode.
I agree. I'm not a big fan of the TOS remasters for that exact reason. The CGI just sticks out way too much. At least by the time of TNG they were already experimenting with CGI, so the updates are less intrusive.
@@jasonblalock4429 It would work better if the remasters weren't done 16 years ago. They sometimes look like PS3 graphics. The original model work wasn't awful but had some lighting issues that the CGI doesn't have, CGI has mostly better weapons effects and planets (especially the scale of planets while in orbit). I think the best use case for the remastered CGI was Tomorrow is Yesterday, specifically the slingshot around the sun, where the sun isn't seen at all in the original effects.
I'd rather they talk about TNG remastered, but that actually did the process they described of recomposting the existing FX composites, to varying degrees between seasons, most notably Season 2, which did not correct errors that had formed in the film negatives over the intervening decades, whereas the team on Season 1 did correct warped composites, noise, and errors that had occured in the original show.
That Breaking Bad scene is soooo masterful. Even from the sound design and everything. They absolutely nailed that, so much so that I still winced and went "oooooh" when those guys get hit. If you ever do anything regarding reacting to sound, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are insanely good aural experiences.
I didn't discover how great the sound mixing was until I watched some episodes recently with good headphones. There were times I literally jumped from simple things like hearing a dog bark in the distance or a door shut. Very subtle but realistic and immersive.
@@DCJayhawk57 somehow they go even crazier on Better Call Saul. This series and its adjacent media are some of the absolute best sound work I've ever heard.
I remember seeing Alien 3 in cinemas when it came out. Watching these clips feels like I slipped into a different reality. They looked R E A L back then, I swear
@@EricLS Yeah, I think it also needs to be noted that the gamma curves on modern displays/players tend to trend towards brighter/washed out. I can imagine it looked more coherent in theaters with a gamma curve that didn't push the black parts of the screen into gray.
@@NoriMori1992 You're right. Back then you weren't used to the idea that CGI could be BAD or GOOD. It was used to sparingly anyways. Also, your suspension of disbelief was cranked to 100% already, because you were watching a movie. That's something I definitely miss from the o l d d a y s
@@murkywters It didn't look great at the time, Alien 3 was a big step down in effects from the first two, but no-one expected perfect CGI in 1992 because it didn't exist. Okay Terminator 2 but that was the most expensive film of all time (up to that point).
I'd love to see some more old school VFX covered like in Big Trouble in Little China! Those VFX should be very nostalgic for you guys as its very similar to early UA-cam-style VFX
I'm 40 so I can't speak to which version a kid, the age I was when I first watched ET, would prefer. But my vote definitely goes to the original. The charm of the practical effects for me almost always wins out against CGI. However using cg to enhance the practical makeup, miniature or puppet can be perfection.
I can definitely say, as a 25 year old, the original is my preferred version. Same with the Star Wars movies and others. I think a mix of practical and CG is best, but there's something amazing about just practical and the skills of the puppeteers and prop builders that adds into the enjoyment of it
There's gotta be a happy medium. Keep the puppet from the original, add the composite shots from the 20th edition. This binary either-or for practical vs CG is a bad argument that _has_ to stop. I get people are trying to keep model makers in business, but it shouldn't be to the detriment of the thousands of underpaid and overworked VFX artists.
There's just something about it. Did you ever see the Neverending Story? Tons of practical effects that were incredibly cool back then but look janky today. but despite the jank, that kinda thing has an unmatched charm to it. Though I think part of it is also one's own appreciation for that sort of thing. You end up focusing less on the jank and you instead think "Man, look at how clever they were back then and how much work they put into these shots."
Yeah like with Star Wars, using CGI to remove compositing flaws etc is fine, but we didn't need a CGI Jabba, that was just crap and every version of it is crap.
I saw E.T. at a drive-in theater recently. Honestly, the only effects that didn't look great were the flying shots. I do think the 20th Anniversary improved on that one area. But I don't think a computer-generated E.T. is an improvement. There's a palpability and a "there-ness" to the original E.T. that is essential to make us feel a connection to him.
Just wanna say huge shoutout to Niko and Sam for creating the most dynamic team on the internet. Corridor crew just continues to create, motivate and inspire! Thanks for that Corridor!
It's the same for me with video games, back in the day, Gamecube games looked so damn good to me, like almost real. Today I look at them in disgust. Our standards are getting so high and we don't realise it.
The best E.T. style CGI replacement for an anniversary edition I’ve ever seen was on the 25’th anniversary edition of ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture’. They added shots at the end using CGI from the original story boards for VFX they had planned for but ran out of money to create. It all fit so seamlessly because it was supposed to be part of the story in the first place and it kinda felt like they’d completed something instead of just gratuitously adding on to it for no good reason. There were other shots too that got a makeover like the Klingon battle cruiser when it first meets VGER’s energy cloud and fires at it. All in all, a really great example of how CGI can add value to a story instead of detract from it. Hope you guys check it out someday!
8:00 i agree with Sam, having those remake parts where they just composite stuff better, using the origonal footage, is just better. replacing stuff entirely seems off. Removing the jank with new tech now that we've learnt how to do the things they did but better, i like that. Replacing ET entirely with CGI... ehhh. not so great.
That's what they did with Star Trek TNG when they released it in HD. They found all the original negatives of the miniature shots and recomposited them without the janky matte lines and VHS fuzziness of the original.
CGI was just not that mature in the early oughts. If they redid the CGI ET today, with enough time, money, and love, it could probably look as close to the original puppet. Or alternatively, they could go with the Mandalorian route of using a puppet with some final CGI touches to make it look more alive.
Yeah, and that’s also a problem I have with the 2011 version of the original Star Wars trilogy: It’s really cool that the colors are much better, widescreen and better effects, but then there are scenes where they added way too many CGI character, especially in the bar scene.
Imagine replacing Bruce with a CGI shark in Jaws. Even if it was perfect it wouldn't work, because Jaws as a film is 50 years old and you can't just suddenly change a huge part of it.
I feel like you could do a whole episode on the car hitting a person effect and how it’s evolved. From the locked off shot of the silent ninja car that instantly appears from the edge of the frame (popular in the early 00’s) to the more difficult and believable effects of today.
There is a german movie called "Victoria" from 2015. It's over two hours long and ît is filmed in one shot without any cuts. Not really any VFX but it's the only movie, I know of, which is filmed in one single shot. Maybe show it to some people and see how long it takes for them to realize there is no editing 😁
I recently watched the 40th anniversary of ET in IMAX and I was hoping based on the thumbnail that it was that version in this video. I don’t believe they used the CG version a la the 20th anniversary in it; I believe they stuck with the original and just remastered it. Would definitely love an episode about remasters, especially a segment on the same movie being remastered multiple times.
That car hit from Breaking Bad is a work of art. I am struggling to see the transition there. It is so well done, my brain can not subconsciously pick up on anything.
I'd love to see you guys take on Dark City's city morphing scenes, which apparently were taken as inspiration for Inception. And any of their other weird stuff while you're at it.
It's funny. The first time I saw the first video about *VFX artists react* I only had a general idea about the use of computer graphics in movies, now I can understand a lot about the 3D modeling, animation, compositing, FX, Roto and all things you talk about... All thanks to this videos, not that I want to be an artist myself but it feels good to be able to better appreciate the effort from artists working on this industry. Now, when a good MOVIE/TV SHOW comes out I´m usually asking myselft...HOW DID THEY DO THAT? *Great Work Guys!*
I didn’t even realize that all the shots of the elephant’s toothpaste in Ms. Marvel we’re CG, I thought that almost all of them were practical because of how flawless those sims looked
CGI ET looked like a Dreamworks animation character. Like he came out of ANTZ. I almost wonder if Spielberg involved some of the animation design team for the art.
I just saw an episode of Binging with Babish were he talked about his career as a commercial VFX artist before he got into making content. I think it would be so cool to try to get him on the show to maybe talk about his previous work or maybe some food VFX
This might be the absolute best episode of this show. I am currently a viewer 2 years in the future. I completely forgot about the hack & subsequent restart channel. Good will to all the tenacious spirits behind the trajectory of this entire channel.
Yes, classic movies! Now that you’ve talked about Alien 3, please do a VFX artists’ reaction to Aliens: some of the best old-school effects ever captured on film!
So I didn’t expect that breaking bad shot to be cgi, I literally just finished rewatching it and I thought they were gonna talk about the plane crash, because I noticed how weird that shot looked but this I didn’t even think of how they did it. Amazing
Yo! That's awesome that my idea got into one of these! A few weeks ago, i asked the team to look at that specific rooftop scene from Ms Marvel, and they actually did it! (granted i'm probably not the only one who requested it but that's still awesome!)
so good. i'd love to see you all react to how psychedelics are portrayed in movies/ film. Movies like Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Mandy or Enter the Void. Or pretty much any music video by ASAP Rocky because his production budget goes crazy sometimes.
I was born is 97, I remember seeing 2 different versions of ET. When I saw the CG version I told my parents to show me the “better one” because he looked too fake. So as a kid back in 2002 I liked the original way more
Personally I loved the jank old 80s ET just bc… that was the technology of the time and it still became a hugely great movie regardless even to this day it’s still a fun movie
Yall should really check out VelociPastor. There's a shot early in the film where they just straight up forgot to add a burning car so there's only a sound effect and words on screen describing what's supposed to be happening. Also the movies a gem
Really glad they finally discussed the effects in the Alien movies. I personally like the effects in Alien 3: janky as they are, they were still able to show us the xenomorph moving in a way that was not obviously a guy in a suit and with much more detail than we saw in Aliens.
I don’t think it’s as bad as people made it out to be, but I don’t really think that the sacrifice is worth it either just to get more detailed movement. It’s same thing in Alien Covenant for me. Yes, there’s a lot of possibilities in terms of what we can see the Xenomorph do, but when the effect just isn’t good enough to make my eyes feel like the creature is actually there, it just takes me out of the movie. I’d rather have the limited movements from Aliens over what we got in Alien 3 and Covenant.
When I rewatched the original Alien, I was surprised at how much of it was just "guy in a suit" and how much _not_ showing it helped to keep the magic alive. Aliens had better suits, plus some puppetry with the Alien Queen. I think it's not until the Joss Whedon one where we get fully-CGI aliens that looked grounded in the scene, and even then not for every scene -- closeups were still puppets. Pity that movie also had the horrendous-looking hybrid. Oh and a batshit-insane plot.
@@romxxii After watching Aliens, it really strikes you just how languid the Alien movies in the first one. And I think of Resurrection like a bonus mission in a game: adds nothing to the plot, can be safely ignored and just exists for fan-service.
I was hoping they will cover that one shot where the characters turn into skeletons. That one was really a bit wonky. Besides that, the show was much better than I expected it to be.
I like both versions of ET. The CGI ET freaks me out just a little bit less since his face is more animated. I would watch the CGI one more often when I was little, but the 20th anniversary edition also had deleted scenes added back into in the final film.
Recently got a projector and made a home theather, and it is especially noticable on a large screen how much more enjoyable the practical effects are in a lot of these older films. That middle period of mid-90's into the 2000's where the CGI wasn't there yet but studio were moving away from practical stuff is the hardest to watch.
I saw the original ET when it debuted in theaters, the 20th anniversary (CGi'd special) edition in theaters, and the 25th edition in theaters; out of all of them I prefer the original theatrical. Same with every movie, especially Star Wars: A New Hope and it's 2 sequels.
Thanks for another great episode. Glitch that bothered me sooooooo much was in the intro of the TV show Fringe (2008). You will spot it. Think its in all seasons. Not sure why it was never fixed. Reminds me of my days doing 3d text, and not having time to fix it
When they killed off Newt and Hicks offscreen in the first five minutes I remember thinking 'there's still two more hours of this to sit through now?' The ambitious but failed VFX were just the icing on that sh*t cake of a movie.
@@kadosho02 it was such a bad experience Fincher didn't want to work with Fox again. It took a lot of convincing for him to do Fight Club with them... thank God he did.

I remember been so afraid of the government invasion scene. I think that, as a kid, VFX don't really matter if you're really emersed
I've just been watching Toy Story 4 with my 5 year old and had to rewind it when I noticed a film/animation glitch...the scene when Woody and Bo-Peep are escaping the playground behind the frisbee, there are two children in the background to the right, one on a swing, and they both freeze (in mid air)/reset as Woody and Bo-Peep exit the scene! It's probably been noticed before but the first time I've seen it! Great series as always!! Jordan
Interesting directing decision on the long Ms. Marvel shot. Literally could've taken a much easier route and split up or shorten the shot, but I guess decided to challenge themselves and end up with an okay but noticeably janky result. Though you always got to wonder if there's another reason behind the scenes that explains why the shot ended up like that.
I'm sorry but CC seems to be stans for marvel. Which is okay but first she hulk and now this. My problem with the shot isnt even Ms Marvel's moves its the PS3 looking rooftop assets, something that's not "ambitious" that makes it look terrible.
15:27 They probably could have done the foam scene practically, using high expansion foam like we typically use for fire suppression in hangars. But, I'm sure they weighed the pros/cons of practical vs CGI.
17:20 I feel the bandana was flying weird. The knot would be heavier so it should have pulled the whole thing down, instead of the position it has and the speed should be exponential. Other than that, that moment was incredible!!
For the Alien 3 movie, the problem mainly was that the Alien puppeteering was done on a completely different location, meaning the lighting was in no way the same as the lighting on the actual set.
I’m 30 years old and to this day I cannot watch ET without getting nightmares. I had nightmares when I was a child and I get nightmares as an adult. That movie literally messed with my head.

My parents have recently gotten into Once Upon a Time on Disney Plus and I would love to see y'all touch upon some of the good and bad CGI because some parts of the show The Magic that you use just looks bad but then they're able to create full CGI ogres that actually look really good
As a late 90s child who grew up in the early 2000s, the only version of ET I’ve ever known was the original. And it absolutely filled me with childhood wonder, it truly made me want to fly my bike around the neighborhood lol
I would love to see an episode where you guys compare “Oners” in different movies. And talk about the different ways each movie achieved their one long shot.
I recently watched Paul Verhoeven's Hollow Man, and I pretty much spent the whole movie wondering how they did some the FX. It still looks amazing for a 2000 movie. Would be nice to have your insights on it! Also, great video, as usual 👍
Yes, the "becoming invisible" scene bugs me.. his skin gets invisible first letting us see all the muscles and bones etc. I think the skin would be one of the last things to become invisible. We need Wren to figure this out... so, what comes after chemistry? Biology.
@@artuc20 I bet they would answer that it's a staging effect, a creative bias to be visually entertaining and impactful rather than a rational thinking on what would actually make sense from a scientific standpoint. But I get what you mean, since they inject a product in the veins, the subject should start to become invisible from the inside first... But I think we would agree on the fact that if this movie is a success in terms of FX, it's not the same for the writing of its characters and credibilty of context :) But yeah, maybe there is some material worthy of Wren's attention there!
One neat change in ET was the guns: in the clip you guys showed with the kids taking off, the original version had the cops holding pistols. The new versions was edited to have them holding walkie talkies.
Please react to the "Alien Planet" tv special! It is so cool. Docu fiction film and I remember the effects being good, but I bet they are wonky now because it is almost 20 years later. Interesting world building for that time.

True, though Aslan had way more emotion than anything from Lion King 2019

I love the idea of realistic camera perspective of Chronicle, its like all throughout the movie
Have you suggested this on their Reddit suggestions posts!
Yup, there is very little CGI in Breaking Bad but the CG is great.
You guys should really check out 1988 The Blob. The special effects especially when the blob is digesting it’s victims is really astounding.

This scene literally made me gasp the first time I watched it. That's how good it is.

Modern digital monitors/TVs have vastly different gamma curves, it probably did look way more real.
@@EricLS Yeah, I think it also needs to be noted that the gamma curves on modern displays/players tend to trend towards brighter/washed out. I can imagine it looked more coherent in theaters with a gamma curve that didn't push the black parts of the screen into gray.
I always remember stuff looking better than it did. Like, the Crash Bandicoot remakes? That's how I remember the _originals_ looking.
I love this format where their sudden thoughts and ideas underway about other films and series segways into them talking about said works
I'd love to see some more old school VFX covered like in Big Trouble in Little China! Those VFX should be very nostalgic for you guys as its very similar to early UA-cam-style VFX

Yep.

DO EEEET!!
Or even special effects from old silent movies.
I'm 40 so I can't speak to which version a kid, the age I was when I first watched ET, would prefer. But my vote definitely goes to the original. The charm of the practical effects for me almost always wins out against CGI. However using cg to enhance the practical makeup, miniature or puppet can be perfection.
Definitely the charm of the puppet over CGI that hasn't aged so well, the remastered bike shots were a huge improvement though.
There's a palpability and a "there-ness" to the original E.T. that is essential to make us feel a connection to him.
lighting/shade. the og model help sale. cgi. god no.
Redoing the ET character as CGI seems entirely unnecessary, because there is absolutely nothing wrong with the original puppet.
Original is way better. Agreed.
I agree, the bike effects were well done. I wish they could release a lightly enhanced Special Edition...or maybe a fan cut.
Too much texture was removed, he looks too smooth :(
Just wanna say huge shoutout to Niko and Sam for creating the most dynamic team on the internet. Corridor crew just continues to create, motivate and inspire! Thanks for that Corridor!
I remember watching Alien 3 in like 1995 and the effects seemed completely convincing to me. Wild how different it seems now.
Spielberg hates the 2002 version and regrets doing it, so that's probably why
I don't think that 3rd eye effect from the second Dr.Strange movies has been on this show yet, but it definitely deserves to be.
That car hit from Breaking Bad is a work of art. I am struggling to see the transition there. It is so well done, my brain can not subconsciously pick up on anything.

The Alien 4k remaster you speak of is a fanmade project by @Project A34K, not an official studio remaster. I suggest people look it up. It's awesome.
