Wow Jacques! I’ve not watched a better video on mushroom cultivation. Simple, clear, easy to follow. Amazing! Thank you! I’ll definitely be rewatching once my North Spores arrives!
I tried mushroom growing for the first time this summer/your winter. Grey oyster. 3kg bag, chucked it on a large dinner plate, in our "laundry room", no fancy set up. We are on the 3rd fruiting. 35nzd bag. Definatey enough for a couple. Delicious.
You have such an amazing style of science educating! Its engaging to follow along with, and very little jargon barrier ever. Thank you for the amazing work you put into these videos
I grow mushrooms here in the UK. I have a little propergation tent in my porch which does the trick just fine. One of my farourite things to do if I get a bumper harvest all at one time is to make mushroom jerky. You make up the marinade and leave the mushrooms in it overnight then put them in the dehyrator. It works great with any kind of mushrooms but my favourites for this are shiitake (just the caps as the stems can turn a little woody) and lions mane (sliced into about 1.5cm slices). I would recommend anyone to try this, with either home grown or shop bought mushrooms
Your previous north spore/mushroom video has inspired me to start wine cap and pink oyster in my garden, using the garden straw as substrate. So fun and I’m so excited to see our first mushrooms
I got the automated mushroom bin from northern spore last year and grew some of the most delicious shiitake mushrooms I've ever had, and the funny thing is I've never really liked mushrooms until I grew them myself, I tried to sell some at the farmers market but everyone seemed to be too afraid to try any 😅
I love seeing more talk about mushrooms! I mentioned this before on the epic gardening channel but I plan on going into mycology! Fungi play such a huge role in not only our diets but the soil itself. Without the fungi web our soil wouldn't be what it is today! Yes bacteria is important too but you'd be surprised how delicate yet vital fungi can be especially with trees! Personally I love just seeing how many species we've been able to start cultivating, it's just so beautiful
I bought a lions mane and a shiitake mushroom block from botanical interests on the black friday sale so they werent too bad price wise. Have them in plastic bins (not the boomer bin). They're doing fantastic! Have a huge lions mane growing and a few shiitake fruiting.
Thank you once again for a fantastic video. I have wanted to grow mushrooms for quite awhile but thought they were intimidating. You just crushed that belief with your last video and this methodical explanation and follow along instructions. Thanks so much! Btw, did Kevin ever find your “gift”? 😂
Last year or the year before I’m not sure but I did a lot of mushrooms. I did lions mane oyster red cap. Oh my God and I loved him. I actually got two harvest on each or maybe three but I know I’m just loved my eat of my time they were readyand I did mine like a storage that was cool storage
The asian grocery stores in San Diego always has oyster mushrooms in stock! 99 Ranch is pretty much the only place where I go to stock up on mushrooms, especially if I'm doing a hot pot or making homemade dumplings! 😅
@jacques just fyi all of the mushrooms your growing will absorb lots of vitamin d by sitting in the sun for 15 minutes 😊 I've been deep diving the mushroom rabbit hole for 3 years and they are incredible and very medicinal 😊❤
Just ordered some fruiting blocks from North spore right now. Also got some straw and some buckets on order, hopefully I can keep the mushrooms coming even after the fruiting block is done.
Empower me, Jacques! Bins for my age group? Kuwul! Make a raised platform for the bin so it can be higher than the humidifier. Make the platform hollow and you have some storage/work space. Just thinking out loud. I'd have to do this outside.
Wow those lion’s manes are big as cauliflowers!! Or like Teddy Sunflowers! always wanted to try growing mushrooms - shiitake is my favorite 🤩 Thanks again for the great video!
I first started growing mushrooms from your first wine cap video. I used your discount code and everything. Now I'm growing snow and pink oysters, lions mane and shitake from liquid cultures. Hey one method I like to use, that I haven't seen you or Kevin use is buckets with holes on the sides.
That is awesome, you have taken it to the next level! I am thinking of trying liquid cultures next using just substrate bags. The buckets with holes seems to be the most failsafe method, honestly not sure why I haven't tried it!
Chestnut mushrooms are the only mushrooms I've eaten that the stem tastes as good or better than the cap😊 I've grown them, lion's mane, and 4 different oyster mushrooms so far and they all taste amazing! I just use a large clear tote from Walmart with a lizard humidifier so it's not so expensive 😊❤
Thank you so much for sharing❤. I would like very much to cultivate at home but was afraid of spores in side my house. Now... problem solved. Blessings🙏
If the spores are a worry to you I would for sure get a boomr bin, the little filters should block everything. In general you shouldn't have any spores as long as you harvest them before they get overripe which is when they would release spores anyway!
Thank you for this video Jacques. I attempted a kit once, and learned the hard way. As it wasn't clearly labelled (I suppose), hubby dug into it one night thinking it was banana bread. I almost kicked his azz! I look forward to see if the used blocks keep fruiting in the ground.
I heard from a mushroom grower that shiitake like to be "smacked" or impacted before fruiting. Something about how it mimics the impact they sense when a dead branch or log falls down in the forest...
perfect timing! I bought a north spore lions mane indoor box on amazon black friday and just started it, but was unclear if i was supposed to spray the outside plastic or inside the X opening
that's it! you've convinced me to finally try growing mushrooms. great video! do you have 'ranch 99' market there? if so, they always (at least here in los angeles) have king trumpet mushrooms.
I’m so glad you covered this subject! I got the boomr bin and a lions mane fruiting block. However, I didn’t know I was supposed to squeeze out the air and tape it down so when I cut slits too much air and moisture got in. There were pins all under the plastic wrap. I did get some big clusters but now I’m growing mold… Can I just bury this type of fruiting block, also?
You can bury it and hope for the best for sure, that is the easiest. As for mold you can spray the sections where you see the mold with some Hydrogen Peroxide and it should kill the mold without hampering the mushroom growth!
There's a video for a vegan burrito...I forget the name of the guy who did it, but he took a few different kinds of mushrooms and flattened/semi charred them in a cast iron pan. Then you put them on a tortilla and use whatever other fillings you want. I was really curious about it, so I gave it a shot and ohhhhh my goodness. It was so delicious. Way too much work for me to have done more than twice, but it was seriously so good. So I can only imagine how amazing that lion's mane mushroom "steak" was!
Camera is FX30 with Tamron 17-70 f/2.8 which is my favorite lens, for wide it is the Sony 10-20 f/4 which I actually don't like but use out of need. Editing is all in premiere but I shoot 10-bit log to help balance lightning/color/
Just be aware their spores can get everywhere! i've seen them fruiting in old kitchen cupboards out of the chipbord. after my friend grew oyster mushrooms the season before
I wanted to try a timelapse but I have to get some better controlled lighting. The only difference in the day is how turned the caps are from being maybe bell shaped down to being slightly upturned. It can get really subtle for "peak" harvest but either way I didn't really notice a loss in flavor, at worst they get slightly woodier.
Hmm, that is one I haven't experienced. I would guess it has to do with moisture either wet and rotting or dry and crumbly. You should be able to reset the block and try again
To the ppl crying how much this costs. U shud price what your garden costs compared to how little you save with what you grow. You dont do these tasks to “save money” You do these things to learn self reliance and to create your own healthy food and to stop being mindless consumers. “Oo noo it cost me $30.00 to learn how to grow mushrooms for the rest of my life. “. Despair is solved by exposure to sunlight and exercise. Thx jacques. ✌️👍🇺🇸🙏
Hi there it's me Bonita from Cape Town South Africa I have my own little mini garden I would love to grow mushrooms but don't have the money to buy me the spawn
Some people have luck creating their own spawn using store bought mushrooms, but I have no experience with it! If you search around you can probably find some good info on how to do it cheaply, at least to start!
It is cheaper to do a big bed outside and try to keep it alive for multiple seasons. Shiitake logs are for sure the biggest bang for buck return you can get. Those will produce for YEARS!
Very true! With each block from North Spore costing on the average of $30. that nice collection he's got is more than a couple hundred dollars. However, the actual growing of the mushrooms IS quite fun!! So there's THAT. And fascinating doesn't even begin to describe my interest in fungi. I just LOVE the subject!
That's why I have winecaps growing throughout my garden woodchips. I tried inoculating logs with oysters and shiitake but it didn't work. I tried the smaller kits, but was unable to propagate them into additional substrate once they were spent. Fortunately I have wild edible mushrooms also growing in my garden. Elegant stinkhorn have taken over some patches, and I saw wood blewits once in my autumn leaves, though I never got them to grow back.
I genuinely can’t imagine clicking a 39 minute video called “How To Grow Gourmet Mushrooms at Home” to post that you don’t think people should grow mushrooms at home, absolutely wild.
This is so great and beautiful!! We are so happy we found you! 😁
Wow Jacques! I’ve not watched a better video on mushroom cultivation. Simple, clear, easy to follow. Amazing! Thank you! I’ll definitely be rewatching once my North Spores arrives!
Very glad to hear this! It took quite some time to gather all the footage!

Oh that sounds delicious! I have bought mushroom jerky before but haven't thought to make it myself!
How fun is that those oyster mushrooms really turned out cool out of the box. I want to give this a try thanks Jacque. Super educational❤
Super fun to watch and see how much they grow throughout the day and overnight!
Your previous north spore/mushroom video has inspired me to start wine cap and pink oyster in my garden, using the garden straw as substrate. So fun and I’m so excited to see our first mushrooms
Awesome! It is so exciting to check on the mushroom beds and when you see that first mushroom its exhilarating!
Huzzah a new Jacques video!
Love this video!!! The shed looks great!❤
Thank you! The shed is feeling really at home now!
I got the automated mushroom bin from northern spore last year and grew some of the most delicious shiitake mushrooms I've ever had, and the funny thing is I've never really liked mushrooms until I grew them myself, I tried to sell some at the farmers market but everyone seemed to be too afraid to try any 😅
I will say I actually really do prefer the shiitake grown at home, they are much more tender than the other ones I've had.

I wish you shipped internationally; not just for mushrooms but all that the store offers. Australia is waiting. Brilliant video!
It would be super cool to be in the Australian market, alas the oceans divide us!

Great interesting video. Thank you. I received a mushroom kit for Christmas so I can't wait to grow them. 😊

YES MUSHROOMS!!!
Interesting video - thank you for your well-spoken explanation.
What a great technique! Thanks for these videos, always very helpful! 😊
I am so clad you made this video. I have been reluctant, but you have made it look so easy I am definitely going to give it a try. Thanks you.❤
It is surprisingly easy, the main deal is simply waiting for them to fruit!
The asian grocery stores in San Diego always has oyster mushrooms in stock! 99 Ranch is pretty much the only place where I go to stock up on mushrooms, especially if I'm doing a hot pot or making homemade dumplings! 😅
I looove that Asian grocery stores always have amazing mushrooms for pretty cheap! Wish there was one closer to where I live now!
Mushrooms are the next step after growing fruit and vegetables 🤣 🍄🟫
99 ranch and specialty produce always have oyster and shiitake in stock!
Thanks for all the information! This makes me more confident to try them, will be ordering soon! Can't wait to cook with them.
You are so welcome, anyone can do it for sure!

The lion's mane is the most fun to see grow, they just keep getting bigger and bigger and shaggier!
Wow! Nice work❤ mushrooms.
Derek Sarno Lions Mane Steak represent. Such a fantastic way to enjoy Lions Mane.

I just finished making my Martha tent. Last year I grew them in buckets and it worked great !
Nice! That is a legit setup for tons of production!
It seems extremely satisfying to take the mushrooms off
It really is!
So versatile!

I heard from a mushroom grower that shiitake like to be "smacked" or impacted before fruiting. Something about how it mimics the impact they sense when a dead branch or log falls down in the forest...
This is interesting. I love mushrooms but haven’t adventured into grown them.
It is a lot of fun to just see just how quickly they grow, in the warmer months the oyster mushrooms will fully fruit in like 2 days!
Can you do an in-depth video about how to prepare pots for fruit trees like guava or lemon
That would be an interesting one, I'll keep it in mind!
Do you set up the fan to blow air IN to the bin, or set it to suck air OUT of the bin. Mine does not get nearly as cloudy as yours does
perfect timing! I bought a north spore lions mane indoor box on amazon black friday and just started it, but was unclear if i was supposed to spray the outside plastic or inside the X opening
It sort of vague but I think outside spray reduces chance of mold!
that's it! you've convinced me to finally try growing mushrooms. great video! do you have 'ranch 99' market there? if so, they always (at least here in los angeles) have king trumpet mushrooms.
you have to try battering & frying the lion's mane next. lots of recipes on youtube.
I do have 99 ranch, I forgot they do always seem to have Shiitake, Oyster, and King trumpet mushrooms!
Why do mushroom children behave so well? They don’t want to get in truffle.
🥊
😂🏆
I’m so glad you covered this subject! I got the boomr bin and a lions mane fruiting block. You can bury it and hope for the best for sure, that is the easiest. As for mold you can spray the sections where you see the mold with some Hydrogen Peroxide and it should kill the mold without hampering the mushroom growth!
What about drying the extra mushrooms for later?
I think I first saw you use field and forest before north spore.
I have used both from the start! I was happy with Field and Forest as well but I started getting from North Spore for variety and consistency.
Awesome video! I wish I was in the USA to order mushrooms from your supplier 😊
Hopefully you have some cool options where you are!
This might be a silly question, but could you inoculate a large (Say a half an acre) and also continue to plant as per usual?
How often for how long were you running your fans on the Boomr bins?
What is better to grow indoor? Grain spawn or sawdust spawn?
Cool video Jacques I might have to give the different varieties
It was fun to try stuff you can't buy anywhere!
I didn’t realize there was indoor shiitakes! Will be looking into this.
Outdoor shiitake is definitely the most economically friendly but indoors is most accessible!
@@jacquesinthegarden I DO have live oaks in my yard (and therefore branches)....

maybe use a fresh utility blade too?

can you ship to Hawaii?
Hmm, I am not sure on the mushrooms, you would have to reach out to customer service with North Spore on their shipping policies.

Interesting. A time lapse would be cool. You mention "it's a day late" how much happens in a day? I'm unfamiliar!

I didn't until I started cooking them for myself. I like them cooked way crispier and dryer, no wet texture for me!
