In Australia we make rosella jam from the hibiscus calyx - it’s delicious, sweet and tart, highly recommend. The inside green ball part is really high in pectin so you can put them (whole) in the mix to thicken the jam and then remove those parts before jarring/eating it (or just use jam sugar)

Most of the time spent in my backyard is at nighttime. I have this really nice handheld floor light and a black light to look for critters going after my babies. It’s super fun and it’s nice to look up at the stars while gardening
It is fun to walk around the garden at night and check it out. Whenever we get back from a road trip it is usually dark and I go around looking at everything with a flashlight!

If you poke the cake with toothpicks, it makes the glaze go more evenly throughout the cake. I’m surprised you haven’t made lemonade. We used to have fresh lemonade all summer with our lemon tree.

Your garden is looking terrific. I've got those same Hoselink string lights and second that they are excellent. Mine have survived through a rainy winter and blistering summer and are still going strong.
Last year we didn't get any Fuyu persimmons due to animals when we normally would get 300 to 600 from one tree. So this year we bought 5 pounds of cayenne pepper and a DE puffer (duster) and this year we are enjoying our persimmons again. In the past I have seen racoons as well as evidence of rats. They don't like the cayenne pepper. Also, we have a container of crab shells that will help keep out nematodes.
@@jacquesinthegarden Yes. We puffed the tree and wherever it landed was fine. We have been eating the persimmons for three weeks now and haven't had the slightest taste of cayenne. We do wash them off, of course, but not excessively - just normally. We will probably get 400 plus fruits. We eat 3 each every morning and we probably have another 3 or 4 more weeks (even though we have been giving some away). We do not have the slightest wish to eat any other fruit right now as they taste so good. (We do the same when the peaches are in and also the pluots.)

Once you make your hibiscus tea, don’t throw away the flower. You can make tacos with it, chop it a bit and cook with pico de gallo. You could also make chamoy, putting them in a blender with some dried apricots or some sweetner and tajin.
I think you need some game camera to us all your wildlife. Ps my dog acquired a taste for kale and ate my tree kale stem and all. Do your dogs mess with anything?
I have solar string lights throughout my garden! Just some cheap ones from Amazon. I get about two hours of charge, in the summer about 3 hours. Enough to get some additional gardening in! Thanks for sharing!
For the bed that the raccoons keep getting into. Once those plants are done you may want to pull all of the dirt out and sift for grubs. I had three birdies beds that the raccoons kept digging up here in Lakeside. I just finished pulling all the soil out and all three were loaded with huge grubs guessing over 120/ bed. I tried the beneficial nematode brand a month ago but it didn’t work for the grubs, not sure if I kept it damp enough. Also, are you planning on trying to over winter the Rosella? I cut out 8 plants but leaving one in to see how it does in San Diego. If you plant them again next year go denser. I had 7 in a short/ med birdies bed and they didn’t mind. A little slow at first then they all took off.
It is for sure grubs! The grubs really seem to love the loose raised bed garden soil. I haven't applied nematodes yet but I plan on trying for whatever that is worth. For the roselle I do plan on leaving it in place, that was just a single plant!

I just came in from hanging solar motion detecting lights to see if I can discourage my friendly neighborhood raccoons from racing down the fence outside my bedroom window at night. I don't care if they dig for grubs in the compost, but they're too chunky to be running on the wood fence. So far bamboo sticks and black tulle have kept them out of my raised beds. If they ever learn they can just tear it, I'll need to find other solutions. Great video; love the ambiance at night.
Sadly the lights do not scare them off at all! Spreading pepper flakes where they dig works. Motion sensor sprinklers (orbit sells one) also apparently work!
@@jacquesinthegarden Unfortunately they are using the old wood fence as an overpass to get from their sleeping trees at the front of the property, over the house roof, then plunking their chubbiness onto the fence to run across to the neighbor's property. They don't always stop to dig in the compost. Landlady doesn't want to cut the trees farther back from the roof 'cuz they're pretty. The masked varmints used to run down the retaining wall to traverse the property, so I'm trying to get them to revert back to that highway. So far the lights seem to be helping as I haven't heard them, and the cat isn't rushing to the window to see them go by. I had success with lights at my old home to discourage them from roosting in my oak tree, but they didn't keep them out of my neighbors koi pond. Too tempting! I don't have a water source for the sprinklers.

We had tried distributing them in the past but I think currently we don't have a good sales channel up there. You can try asking at customerservice@epicgardening.com and if there is an option they will find it!
Have you considered setting up a distribution center within the EU? It would make it much easier for those of us living here to order your products without worrying about expensive shipping and customs fees. Many companies use this model to better support their international customers. Just an idea - hope it helps!
They are giant Agave Americana! I have a few across the yard and never view them as special since I am so used to seeing them all the time where I live haha
@jacquesinthegarden I thought they might be Agave. I lived in Costa Rica for a while and I saw Agave plants growing wild there that were at least 10ft tall. Wish I could grow stuff like that here in NC.
I have mine in containers and just let it ride. Every other year I may lose a little section to rot but the plants are totally fine! Having smaller containers really helps as they don't actually need much and too much is a liability
I have cured before using a heat pad and some plastic bags. I haven't decided how to best do it this year. I honestly am not sure if you get any benefit to curing outside of storage life as I've had some uncured and they were still delicious!
Luckily I haven't had to rip up much in the actual garden space. For the greenhouse though I had to rip out a decent amount of tile and concrete first.

The pathway lights are the only ones I leave on as they are automatic and they are angled down thankfully and yellow tinted. The string lights only get turned on for entertaining or hanging out and then are shut off for the rest of the night!

skewering chicken on the rosemary stems is delicious. I wanted to grow turmeric and ginger this year and never did. Next year for sure.

Jacque, reminder, strawberry is a winter crop. Of course it will do great.

@@capeeddy there are hardier varieties of agave. We had one here in MD until we had a really mild but WET winter. It rotted. 😢
Since ur plumeria is outdoors like mine, will the winter rains make it weak n disease prone when it gets soaked? Is urs in grd?

It can be grown as an annual in cooler climates.
I do know it can be grown just about anywhere as an annual but here it will survive and produce through the winter!
