When I was a teenager I thought the only way I'd be happy is plastic surgery. I am not rich though.. I got my eyeliner tattooed when I was 19 the first lady fucked it up. I got it fixed thank God. But it made me think what if my surgery got fucked up? But I'm 25 with 3 kids I dont care about that stuff anymore lol. Not having social media helps too.
Normal is however you were born. People only think normal because society has brainwashed people into what they think is beautiful. It's sickening. Love yourself the way you are. If you have a medical condition then i get it but not just cuz you don't like the way you look.
I never liked my nose . However since my dad died , I look in the mirror and get a little reminder of him . So I am quite happy with it now . 👃☺😘

I can't totally agree I think he was a bit agressive with the doctors at the hospital, they are plastic surgeons, they do plastic surgery, it's their job and these surgeries need to be done just like any other, even if just for astheatics

I'm Brazilian and I think the problem there is that lots of people are really judgmental. I feel bad for the women who were bullied into surgery cause so was I.

beauty exists, it's in symmetry and sex features (look it up), the guy is trying to make this a sensationalistic piece...it's a short film on corrective surgery with his own one sided narrative that is trying to make an issue where it isn't.

I think the culture we have going on with beauty ATM is so damaging. It's brilliant that people are celebrating curvier bodies that are typically "African" and other features like fuller lips but then other people are really insecure; I'm part Irish so I'm pale as hell and I have curves but they're not 'curves', you know, and I sometimes I feel so unattractive compared to others. Then like you said, people want an 'african body' and a 'European face', you can't pick and choose and there's nothing wrong with 'african features', it's all beautiful. It's so sad that we're constantly choosing one set of things to idolise and focus on rather then making everyone feel good about themselves and celebrating everything
African body I'm not sure about that, because Brazilian women it's kind of small, and I don't think about the European face either, we have our own physical type.

Im always in awww, when I see other races especially the caucasian women and others get their whole bodies done in order to have black women features. I loooove the curves I was born with, I use to not like my nose, because it’s big to me, but I have come to love the flaws I have. I realize that I have what others are paying for, which makes me blessed to naturally have big nose, lips, a big booty, big boobs(which are heavy), and hips. Now if I could afford plastic surgery I would get a breast reduction, because grrrrrrrl, these things are heavy(38DDD)!!! I might have to find this Doc and go to the D.R.!

She’ll continue to struggle, if still alive, to get diabetes meds in a society that is using Ozempic to lose weight. It’s a legit diabetes medication that is now being prescribed off label as a weight loss aid. Yay huh? So, this world is more enamored with beauty than in taking care of true illnesses.
I'm sorry about your grandmother. It's an unusual situation where I live in Rio Grande do Sul. But I think it may vary depending on your state. What I suggest from my own experience is to contact a doctor at your neighborhood health center and explain the case. Ask him to write a special request for medicines. The court has seven days to respond. This is how I got my mother's special medicines which cost 2,000 reais because she needs these medicines to live. She had kidney surgery and has two more scheduled, all free of charge. However, you have to navigate the bureaucracy and prove that it is a serious case. It's very strange not to have diabetes medicine for your grandmother. My family has five diabetics and they receive all the meditations, but I believe it can vary from region to region. Go to the health center and try to find out. Sometimes changing the health post unit can speed up the process. Good luck.

+Aly Lopez Yes, but people are also responsible for how they deal with insecurities. Most women in general in a given society will have some insecurity about their appearance. But most don't feel the need to have surgery to "correct" their natural body. Do we now live in a world where people don't have their own minds and opinions, that everything they think and feel is force fed and they have no options to take a different perspective on themselves.
People can choose to ignore social media, if they want. They can choose to have friends and surround themselves with people that make them feel good about themselves. No one is "forced" to read social media commentary or to be attracted to a man who might be attracted to a woman with different features or to conform to the standards of women around them. There is such a thing as individualism. I understand it is easier said than done, but it is still done by millions of women everyday who choose to love themselves as they are instead of bowing to pressure.
While I believe plastic surgery is a personal matter and choice, I personally would like to see women happier with their natural appearances. Because when they have children, they will resemble their parents. If a parent doesn't like something about themselves physical that is a natural part of who they are, they will only reinforce that insecurity on their children? Should the world start marketing surgery as the solution to every issue a woman has with her body? I think the psychology needs to change more than the body. Because changing your body doesn't mean you won't continue to find other things your dissatisified with about yourself.
They are choosing their response to societal pressure, its everyone's responsibility to deal with these pressures. The vast majority of women dont get surgery.

It’s crazy because all of those women were already really beautiful. Not in a cheesy “every human is beautiful” way but, they truly were all beautiful and diverse. It’s sad that the world makes women feel like they’re less than. I feel this pressure all the time and it truly sucks and it’s too the point that I don’t know I’d I’ll ever truly be confident.

Brazil sounds a lot like South Korea? Different features they want, but similar culture. Discrimination on women's appearances. Jobs tied in to good looks. Lots of clinics, social pressure to get surgery, cheaper options for the "everyday woman".
I heard about South Korea. Just sad.
One thing is pretty similar with Brazilians is how upfront their are with judging looks. Brazilians are more on the mockery/make fun side while SK are just pointing out in a matter-of-fact manner about certain features (like big headxsmall head, skin tone, weight, and so on).
The problems with countries like Brazil is they have too many beautiful women and women feel like they have to constantly compete with each other. Specially the way they’re judged.
To be honest I don't think the pressure here in Brazil is very different from other Western nations. These are just women who follow social media and compete with each other, like everywhere.
The thing about jobs tied to good looks I don't think is true. Apart from shops I wouldn't say there is too much pressure on appearence for a job.
As for South Korea, the documentaries I saw seems worse than here. They sound very, very competitive.

Alex Santoro Many American surgeons (and others in the world) take after the work of brilliant artistic Brazilian surgeons, such as the famous Ivo Pitangui. Growing up in Brazil I didn’t know much about plastic surgery, in middle school to teenage years, but I have heard of Pintangui. That just gives you an idea on how big that guy was. But he was known as an artist, which is probably one of the reasons why he was so famous. On the other hand, the standards of beauty and importance of beauty that is projected onto women is so high that made people like me, someone considered pretty, not to think of herself as being pretty (back then) because of those standards. And I was a thin white blue-eyed blond girl. Well, I was dark blond back then but, nonetheless... Too bad I couldn’t see it back then. One thing is for sure though: if I still lived in Rio, even though I’m still thin, I would probably put more emphasis in exercise and beauty routines if I still lived there... of course with Rio being a beach city, the beach in a way is your backyard, and it’s not like everyone puts an emphasis on looking perfect, for young people though, the way the media picks beautiful people to be their actresses and reporters, and you do have a fair amount of pretty people around, all that influences people. It’s hard not to be influenced by your culture, as much as you don’t always agree with it. There is the side of health though that I admire: people also want to care for themselves fir health. You don’t have to necessarily go to a gym to be healthy, so besides eating well, for example there is a national forest inside the city that people like to go for hikes and bike rides, people naturally walk a lot bc it’s a walkable city, and on Sundays, on the wide double-street boulevards, the whole street closest to the beach (that’s like at least 3 lanes wide), on Ipanema and Copacabana beaches for example, are closed for people to walk: with their families, take the kid on the stroller, or ride your bike (even though there are bike lanes by the side of the side walk, from end to end of the beaches), so people can have a huge amount of free space to enjoy by the beach without having to go to the beach if you don’t wish to and exercise or simply have a relaxed walk and chat with friends along the way. Can’t tell if I miss home or not though...it’s been a while since I’ve been back. Anyway, that was more info than I thought I was going to share 😆 good night! And sorry, will not revise my grammar and punctuation... it’s late and my phone’s glass it totally shattered! 😝 ✌️ (ps: we def use the peace sign a lot! But dont do the ok 👌 sign over there though! I think people are way more obsessed on Rio de Janeiro than in São Paulo because Rio is way hotter than São Paulo and they have a lot of beaches so their inhabitant use less clothes and show way more their bodies, otherwise they are going to fry with Rio de Janeiro's heat or they are going to feel bad when they are walking on the beaches since this activaty is pretty common there.

As a brazilian I can say without doubt, we can be really genial when being mean. Things people usually say to poke fun at others in other countries are too soft and "childish" for us. I'm pretty sure we have jokes about how brazilian problem is the brazilian, because we know brazilian have qualities to make big (like creativity) out there, but we use it to foolish purposes instead of for good things.

As a mixed race Brazilian this documentary was so incredibly well put and respectful, the reporter covered everything and was really kind as well. Race in Brazil is a complex subject there has been a lot of mixing due to a eugenics movement which was so subtle that people hardly noticed (look up Politica de Branqueamento “whitening policies”) - so to this day Brazil is very diverse. Therefore, there is no set beauty standard in a way as most people tend to pick and mix from different ethnic features that they think suits them when they consider plastic surgery. It’s really a shame because there is that pressure for women over here to look as beautiful as possible so opportunities come to you easier. I was saddened to watch Diana be insecure about her nose because I personally saw no flaws in her whatsoever, hopefully one day though women from around the world will look inwards when they search for beauty and realise how they already are beautiful.
Big or wide nose is just a common feature that is less attractive than small nose not matter where you live.

david roskelley I believe your whole point is shallow. Just because we are attractive to beauty it does not mean we can’t be attractive to other things. It does mean we are not attractive to different, to intelligent minds, to honesty, good and kind. I believe most women still choose a husband based on character and not beauty. And if I’m wrong that explains so many bad marriages. To want to change so other people are attractive you is shallow and superficial and guess what one will still age and not realize the important thing in life wasn’t beauty as they might never accept to age normally. Beauty on the outside means nothing if the inside has nothing to offer.

It’s not just a matter of fixing their insecurities. It’s the fact that they are insecure to begin with that’s wrong. Women are clearly pressured to “fix” a perfectly functioning body because the standards of outer “beauty” require that of them. So yes you could say “leave them alone, they’re doing what makes them happy” but isn’t it sad that it takes a whole surgery to make them happy? Can’t they be pleased with how they look already? They can’t because they see that others have “made themselves happy” and feel pressured to keep up with the standard.

When I was in Brazil 15 years ago, I was amazed at how beautiful the women were and how NATURAL they all were. They didn't wear makeup, no padded bras, and wore tiny outfits without shame when it was hot. At the time I was still coming off of teenage insecurities and working on my confidence, and spending time in Brazil where there was zero emphasis on makeup and big boobs, for me was a turning point. So I don't know what changed..

Nothing changed! This is a sensationalist video! I've lived in Brazil for many years and plastic surgery is not something normal that everyone speaks about it as the documentary tries to portray. There is indeed a big part of the population who cares about that but there is a much bigger part of the population that doesn't.

I relate to this all too much as I’m still recovering from my surgery that took place a month ago. I travelled from Australia to my home country and underwent rhinoplasty surgery that I, a 17 year old girl, paid for all by myself. This is only because the procedure was so cheap, you wouldn’t believe it if I told you the price. When I sat down with my doctor in the consultation, I realised just how common a nose job is over there, for both men and women, even those my age. In my home country getting a nose job is like going out to get milk. My nose was a stereotypically “Arab” nose that was long and hooked on the sides, and I will never forget the torment and bullying I suffered from all my life because of it. Now I’m very happy with the results, and happy I saved up my own money for the procedure.

I've noticed that in Brazil where I went two times for few months, but it's also the only place in the world (and I traveled a lot) where I felt totally free to wear anything, and saw many overweighted ladies in bikini with even very muscular handsome guys. I never got it, how they can feel so free be to as they want to be and at the same time doing so much surgery.

*I'm brazilian and I can tell you how much this whole situation scares me! People here are super judgemental on other people's looks and it does affect your life in many different levels - from your love life to your career! Yet, I'm against plastic surgery just for the hell of it because there are so many risks and costs involved and a lot of people just wait for a miracle to happen, they don't follow a proper diet and don't exercise after surgery then they go back to their original shape real quickly. Plus it costs a lot of money in a country where the minimum wage is about 300 US dollars per month. I never did any procedure myself, but I know a lot of people who did, and honestly most of them remained very close to what they used to look like before surgery...*

Just because you would never get one for YOUR reasons doesn’t mean NO ONE should be able to get plastic surgery. I’m Brazilian. People made my life shit because of my nose. I hated myself. I cried everyday looking at the mirror because I looked disgusting.
I just got a nose job. Simple as that. I knew the risks, I had the money, I found an amazing doctor. My best feature now is my nose, everyone loves it. I love it, I feel a lot better.
All of that just to say that: EVERYONE has the right to do WHATEVER they want with their bodies. You can’t judge people for getting plastic surgery. They’re doing it for themselves, because they want to. Again: knowing the risks, having the money and finding a good doctor the person should be okay.
I lived in Indonesia and it's the same here. People are being very judgemental even when they didn't look pretty themselves.

actually, it's not so common here in Korea to make a serious invasive plastic surgery. As was mentioned an eyelids surgery is the most common type, which is in fact not really a surgery more like a cosmetic procedure such as a acne scars removing.

Well, I’m Brazilian and I am absolutely shocked with this documentary! I knew Brazil was one of the biggest countries for plastic surgery, but I never thought it was that bad. I’m not trying to sound obnoxious, but it seems like this fixation is stronger on families with lower levels of education. I’m not rich by any means, but I got an scholarship to a very nice privet school in Brazil and because of that, I got the chance to enter a very good university. NEVER in my group of friends and colleagues have I seen such obsession for physical perfection. Yes, Brazilian women love to look good, but spending every penny on plastic surgery is still alarming to me. The very few people I know who had plastic surgeries had enough money to pay for it without much trouble. So seeing these women struggling so much to pay the bills and still prioritizing surgery shocks me tremendously.

Most of the women I know have said they want to get breast implants or get their nose modified or so, and even I have caught myself thinking about getting a plastic surgery, which is something I don’t think I’d do unless it was a necessity for my health. It doesn’t make sense for a single parent who probably struggles financially to spend money on plastic surgery. They’re worried about their children’s essential needs being met, but have no problem shelling out hundreds or thousands unnecessary things.
As a Brazilian woman, I have to say that this shallowness , over sexualization and obsession with being young forever is appalling and delusional. I am so happy I left when I did. Watching them sink to these absurd standards makes me sad. It is all about how you look and how young you are. They are actually allowing these people to get the procedures for vanity through the public health system while people are dying on the waiting rooms while they wait for actual life saving treatments. To think these people can vote. No wonder the country is in absolute shambles.
It's not all like that. I've been here since 2008 and I feel really free to be in my skin. Rich women who overdo plastic surgery look ridiculous here.
