The most common response was that they were aware of companies and governments spying on them but didn't care. Some even said some nonsense like. "I have nothing to hide so I have nothing to worry about." Oh well, at least we have Linux and other free software so why care what the normies are doing. They have every right to give up their rights.

I've got to see the UI changes in Windows too, starting from Windows 98 up to 10, with some exceptions. Can say, it's pretty much like Kenny's journey, and a big reason why when I use Windows 10, I hate myself.
When my lapptp fan cocked up on a decade-old machine I was still using, I was pleasantly surprised when after some configuration, my Manjaro installation worked on another machine. Sure I had to use legacy boot and make the board not use SecureBoot but so long I can use the bootloader, so long the system and home UUIDs exist, GRUB works like a champ. And when it doesn't I just need to punch in a few commands to make it so.
The robustness of free software with some brain power and research from an end-user is amazing in an era where Microsoft Windows needs third-party tools to function as a system-on-a-stick and Apple makes it hard as humanly possible to let average users run OS X in a VM.
The only thing which sucks is when I was trying to play Valheim on my open-source OS, Vulkan and OpenCL both work like ass. In a twist of irony Vulkan on my current Windows system runs that particular game faster than Vulkan in Manjaro with the various AMD Vulkan packages installed, but I am also just getting my feet wet with Vulkan on Linux so it could be a configuration issue from what _to me_ is a non-obvious user error.

To the last point, at least there's good news in that progress is being made and remarkably so in the last few years. Proton is pretty great at what it does _most_ of the time now (with caveats), and Vulkan too is making leaps. The impetus to make these things actually work well seems to be building (with some exceptional cases where a game can out-perform its Windows counterpart).

The big problem with open source software as a programmer is how do you get paid. Programming is time consuming and labour intensive. If I have a job outside of programming I have a lot less time to program. If I spend my time programming and don't get paid I am poor. If 100,000 people use a program and 5% of then donate a dollar to the devs, that's only 5k, but if 10,000,000 people used it then it's 500k. User base makes all the difference, so spread the word as much as can and be the difference maker so that hopefully in the future you and other devs can make a living in a fair way without having to give in to corporate demands.

Did I mention my computer is only 2 years old and my sister's is only a year? Linux and Windows 10 dualboot as of right now, and even with Chrome, I have at least some memory available. My dad and mom have mid to high range laptops but my dad had to do some relearning a lot, although he couldn't find File Explorer, right there in his taskbar.

Then I got a laptop with Vista. Now, I didn't just wanted to switch, i was sure to. 2008 I made the decision to switch from XP to Ubuntu on my main machine. In the early days it was even hard to get audio working in UA-cam. Later I had to install a dual boot W7, to be able to play specific games with friends. Bummer. 2021, yes, 13y later I switched from Ubuntu to Manjaro and landed on Qtile a few days ago.

I'd make the full switch to Linux if more developers were willing to switch over. I have modding tools and programs that work better on windows than on Linux. And not only that, but a lot of anticheat games that I play only work on windows, which really sucks. And using a VM with a GPU passthrough is honestly a major pain in the ass just to play those games, so I find myself using windows 98% of the time. Dual booting does exist, and I do that, but it's still kinda a pain to switch back and forth just to do one thing then switch over when I have to do the other 98% that I already do on windows. Like I said, if more devs move over to Linux, or hell, if actual industries try to make more of a focus on Linux, the userbase would be massive.

All revolutions eventually turn on their allies once the power settles in, becoming the establishment. To solve that, you actually need a breed of person who you don't see a lot of in the FOSS community, and that's UX designers. Yes, the artsy-fartsy types, but they're needed for making software that's usable by _humans._ Two projects that come to mind that seem to have had this realization and are getting it under control are elementaryOS and KDE.
It's also a (good, imo) reason people will want to stick to Apple products. Apple has had style guidelines/rules for many, many years now, and created an environment where following those guides for human interface is actually pretty easy for any developer. Standardization in that respect was a very good thing; another thing elementaryOS is aiming for and seems to be pulling-off alright, without the spookiness. (KDE...I love you, but your default apps are seriously ugly ducklings.)
      Great software doesn't need tutorials.

Can games be proprietary? Or that isn't be considered software at all?
Also not to offense, but has the ridiculous modern popularity of games? Has hurted Linux jumpin'? I know that Wine and friends had helped and stuff, but they still cry about their favorite anti-cheat meta games... not to feel like a boomer, but I ain't a big fan of these MMO's!
Honestly also, my love-hate relationship with Windows has been basically the same, it all went downhill after 7... even though I almost completely left it alone, I still like the fact that Windows is somehow a non-Unix-like OS!
Man, how great would be if the Windows family became open/free software, we could learn more about it, we could finally have real choices and help Apple fall, lol.
Nowdays I use Linux Mint as my daily driver and Lubuntu on my old potato which my parents learnt about ;)
Technically I still dual boot Windows in my main computer, but it's just like you said!
For doing this particular niche task, although I'm also a multiplatform developer and Wine tester, so yeah! (Doing other tasks or even casually gaming, I still spend all my days with my Minty love xD)
Lastly, I'm also convincing most of my friends who hate Windows 10, since their complaints I've heard like... complained about how Microsoft resetted his settings and called his PC slow crap...
I have been asking them about their daily routine and what games they like so I can help them still have fun while being safer and comfier!

FOSS video editors are a complete joke, so no real competition with Premiere. I've heard Natron is good, but is it actually a viable replacement for After Effects? I don't know personally, I've barely used AE or Natron, but I can at least say they operate very differently, so even if their capabilities are similar enough, if you already have a ton of AE experience, basically none will transfer over, which would be really annoying.

Steam works on Linux but will only run native games (which aren't many). You can enable proton compatibility later and 99% of non-native games will work. However, games with kernel-mode anticheats that only work on windows kernel and detect VM bypasses will NOT work. This mainly applies to EAC and Battleye.
Some notable titles that don't work because of said kernel dependencies are: VALORANT, Rust, Escape From Tarkov, and Rainbow Six Siege.
While EAC and battleye DO work on Linux, individual game developers have to request support for it.
VALORANT and R6 will likely never work on Linux. Rust and Escape From Tarkov developers have announced their games will work, but once the specific anti cheat modules have been ported over.
Personally I've given up all of them and mainly play CSGO (which works fine because it doesn't have kernel-mode AC). I just really don't like the idea of running a kernel rootkit just to play an FPS game. It has a myriad of privacy and security consequences.

@@user-ke6gn8pg3u I appreciate your input, I tried to give Proton a try, and a number of games I've been trying to play just simply don't work.
Some of it may just be circumstantial evidence for my individual cases to be so faulty; but it put a sour taste in my mouth. I had to give up my unraid VM system a while ago just so I could keep playing Tarkov in my spare time. And I don't want to acclimate back to something like proton until it really comes into it's own. If it ever does.

Especially open-source software developers that develop in their free time have a certain idea how their project is supposed to be.
So unless your ideas overlap, no one's gonna do your bounty and also merge it to upstream.
Especially not if it's something UI related.
Unless of course it's an optional UI element for example like in RetroArch where there are different modules.

I don't want to deal with wine/proton and stuff. Preparing the move on a virtualbox. Manjaro works quite nicely with virtualbox. If you leave games out of it then it makes sense just to use a Windows VM. Wine for apps works but in my experience there's issues, using an offline XP or 7 VM instance makes more sense. I created a dual boot recently and Manjaro boot loader did it beautifully, I could boot either OS with no work required, it was beautiful. Just make sure you install Linux after Windows because Windows destroys the bootloader.
