I’m ex-military and currently in tech. I think everyone should be able to defend themselves, but what’s more important is improving situational awareness when you are outside.
And so should everyone be prohibited from even owning a gun. I don't care about these damn "american freedoms". It works everywhere else, so it can also work in US. US is only the greatest after accounting for its ego.
Agree entirely. Self-defence might be useful as a last resort but situational awareness is key. Some people call it being streetwise but I call it being smart about your observations and choices.
Yes. One should try to acquire as many "layers of defense" as possible. First layer being the ability to spot trouble before you get into one and just avoid it. Second layer is having a pretty good chance(being fit) of just running away if you do get into trouble despite trying to avoid it. Third layer being able to defend yourself if you get into trouble but can't escape. Many people skip straight to the third, but self defense is always pretty sketchy. No matter how good you are with a gun/martial arts etc, some random crazy guy doing one unexpected thrust with his knife or being slightly faster than you expected can quickly end your life. Knife battles especially are one of those you should absolutely avoid ever engaging in no matter of your personal skill level. Just too many ways for it to go horribly wrong even if you do everything right.
People who are accustomed to civilized society sometimes don't recognize that it took very uncivilized people and actions to create it. And on a few rare occasions, a man can be forced into a position in which reason won't help you. RIP Bob Lee.

Not allowed to carry in San Francisco. Big Tech disarmed themselves and advocated for weak police departments who cannot make the streets safe. This is what happens.
I am a Software Engineer who grew up in a developing country. The lack of street smarts in the average techie in the west. Leads to many of them having truly bizarre and out of touch opinions on security and self defence. Worst part is they are so confident when spouting their bad takes.
Same, I grew up in the rural side of a third world country, learned how to hunt, shoot and how to survive from a young age thanks to my parents. I diverted into the tech and computer science area. I still carry a firearm and I stay aware of my surroundings. Safe to say that has kept me out of harms way compared to many of my colleagues. I also try to keep a good fitness routine to train with my kit. Always be prepared. Real life is ugly.
Besides conceal carrying, just improving your situational awareness will greatly protect yourself against accidents or attacks. Good reminder to try to avoid being in stupid places, at stupid times, with stupid people.
+1 Always EDC and be hypervigilant when out in public. Situational awareness is so important. Also maybe not walking downtown San Francisco at 3 AM. So sad, RIP Bob.

It always seems to be the case that physically strong people don't care about knowledge or intelligence, and intelligent people don't care about physical strength. We should all strive to have both instead of leaning on one or the other.
With how much time and effort it takes to be proficient in one and how little leftover time we get after completing duties it gets harder and harder to do both. Cellings are too high to reach for common man now.
Probably because people tend to play to their strengths. For some people it's really pointless to learn hand to hand combat and physical self defense because they're naturally too weak for it to matter anyway. Same the other way around, some people just don't have the mental acuity to avoid certain mistakes. Plus, in this particular case, it could've been just bad luck. He could've been a navy seal veteran and someone still stabs him fatally in a moment where he has his guard down.
@@tripplefives1402 Your mental capability is limited by your IQ potential as your physical capability is limited by your physical potential. I kid you not, every mental outlaw video speaks to me on an incredibly personal level. I work in IT and I am profoundly passionate about everything code and tech related, from AI to Cybersecurity to OSINT, you name it. And at the same I take great care in my physical shape, having practiced karate for a decade and currently practicing boxing for 6 hours a week Maybe I'm just paranoid, but if we're really heading onto a big tech mass surveillance dystopia it will be an incredibly powerful asset, for everyone willing to be free, not only being highly proficient in everything related to code and terminals but also having the full physical capacity to defend yourself by being physically healthy and knowing self defense Again, maybe it's just paranoia, but personally I realized just how incredibly well physical health and prowess goes with a deep understanding of computers and a conscious use of them

This is just my 2 cents but I personally think that 99% of Mental Outlaw's videos are only applicable to you if you are doing something very shady. Spending hours a week on OPSEC or physical self-defense just for the sake of defending yourself is kinda paranoid. You said yourself that everything you do are just prevention-measures for the potential "big tech mass surveillance dystopia". You are your own first responder. You gotta be aware of your surroundings and you need to know what you're doing, though. If you don't have a piece, get one, get the training to use it, and hope you never have to pull it. Better safe than sorry.
And for people who don’t have the temperament and commitment to safely and proficiently carry a firearm (so realistically, half of the population), pepper spray is better than nothing. It takes little or no training, is non-lethal, and is effective in most of the same situations.

Our host is based but also biased, since he thinks a gun will protect you when in fact Bayes theorem will probably mean you won't get robbed like poor Bob did. I once calculated, based on statistics, that if you live in the worst neighborhood (I believe it was Chicago) but act normal (no gold chains around your neck, acting drunk, which is an invitation to get robbed) that you'll end up with a violent encounter about once every 5 to 15 years (I forget the math I did but I recall this range). You can do the math yourself by looking at crime rates and using a CUMULATIVE BINOMIAL PROBABILITY calculator (Google this). So for most Tech Bros who don't plan on being in Silicon Valley for the rest of their lives, probably you'll do OK if you just take normal precautions without a gun. What happened to Bob is probably bad luck, though of course if Bob had a firearm he'd be alive today, but that's looking at Bayes theorem kind of backwards (i.e., any death can be prevented, if you know, a priori, what is going to kill you, for example exercise to avoid heart disease if you know you will die of heart disease). small king! if you want you can change that anyday, starting with regular fitness training. of course height is something unchangable but you would still develop muscle and if you then pick up mma or any other form of self defence, you would be good to go :)
Nice. I also recommend starting with the gym. Not because of personal safety or anything like that, but being smaller does have an impact regardless. I've found lifting and the process to be very gratifying. It has given me a better connection to my body, more physical confidence, and overall a healthier state of mind and being. This sounds very cliché. But being someone who's very nerdy, I think the benefits are even greater. Plus, it's a fun way to break stereotypes.
Good video m8. To a certain extent criminals are getting more advanced yes, but I think it has a lot more to do with criminals having a lot more opportunity. In places like SF they are consistently lowering the penalties for committing crimes. The lack of serious legal consequence opens the door for a lot of criminals to try things they previously may have stayed away from. The places that are reducing and/or eliminating legal implications for criminals also tend to have increasingly strict laws on legally obtaining/owning a firearm (not to mention legally carrying one). So the two major consequences for committing crimes (legal or physical harm) are both getting lower all the time.
We're definitely seeing some absolutely ridiculous things from some places in the US. Like people shoplifting in broad daylight and random bystanders actually helping them and cheering for them both in person and on social media.

Huge respect to you man. I wish more people in IT had mindset like yours. As an occasional IPSC and IDPA shooter I can tell that getting a basic level of handgun shooting is not very difficult, it will take just a dozen of training sessions with a decent instructor, it's also a lot of fun, and who knows, maybe one day this skill can save your life. No matter where you live, it's better to have it than not to have. What's important is that if you are not trained to make a good shot in normal conditions, and act in a stressful situations, then even if you own a gun you will probably have a big trouble to use it properly. Among all gun types, pistols require the most amount of skill from their users, especially small and light pistols, which are mostly used from concealed everyday carry. If you are not got used to them, then they will kick hard, they will be extremely unusually loud, they tend to make misses from small mistakes in your micro-movements. When I first showed my wife how to shoot a handgun she wasn't able to hit a standart chest silhouette target from 6 meters, it's really not that easy as it seems from movies or videogames. You have to absolutely automate gun safety in your head to the level of muscle memory, you have to learn and periodically train your grip, drawing and aiming to be able to use your skill in a stressfull situation. But fortunatly, shooting it's not a rocket science either, just a skill you need to keep up. I live in a country where guns laws here are really anti-people, 98% of civilians (according to official statistics) are disarmed and violent crime levels are quite high (partially because of it). Owning a handgun here is completely illegal, you can only have a longbarrel gun for hunting, handguns can be used and stored only in shooting clubs. If you use a gun on a bad guy, especially a pistol, you will definately move behind the bars for many years, BUT! Does it mean that you should listen to the bullshit government and corrupted politicians try to tell us and convince us it's true? THEY created the world that is convenient for THEM. They are safe in this world, they live in the safe areas, they will never face consequences of their political actions and decisions. But we, the people, don't belong to that world, we have to think for ourselves. What would be your excuse if you will not be able to protect yourself? What if you will not be able to protect your woman and your children? Our society is so rotten these days, folks. Stay safe
@@mycommentmyopinion I’m from Russia. Unfortunately the gun culture, safe, responsible and respectful handling firearms, is in a sad state here. The government put quite a big effort to restrict everything related to guns, and disarm as many civilians as possible, especially in the last 12 years. Guns are mostly spread among people related to army and police, and among shady criminals of course. Very few people outside of these categories ever hold a firearm in their hands during their life. There are unfortunately very limited amount of shooting clubs and very few people are interested in this by their own. Also it’s not even easily available to simply go to shooting club and try to shoot, you have to go through some amount of beurocracy to get a permission to do it. That’s why some part of top IPSC shooters from Russia are also related to police and military - usually it’s children of current or retired high ranking military officers, who gave them an opportunity to shoot and train a lot from a very young age without having to keep in mind such inconveniences like laws, acess to shooting ranges (most of them are not available for civilians) or ammo price (it’s quite expensive). I know it’s a hot topic of whether should guns be restricted or not, and what exactly should those restrictions be. I think there should be some “golden middle” between a strict control, medical and background for gun owners and freedom to own a gun and being able to protect yourself in the situation of life and death. When I see the news from US, I think that perhaps gun market there should be more regulated in some ways, but I pay a huge respect that people in the US almost religiously defend that famous constitution’s second amendment. That is a right deed. Some post soviet countries have even worse situation with gun control, but there are excellent examples of finding that golden middle btw. In Baltic countries like Estonia and Latvia guns are completely legal for self-defence if you haven’t committed any violent crimes and don’t have psychological diseases. And btw those countries are the only ones where there wasn’t much bloodshed, civil wars, or criminal problems in the 1990-s after the soviet union collapsed. They are most developed and prosperous among former soviet republics, they managed to get rid of old communist politicians and integrate into Europe, their crime rates are extremely low. Of course, that is not just because guns and self-defense are legal there, but that is one step to a more civilized society
I'm not from Russia, but it's pretty similar here. It's much easier to obtain a pistol illegally as the legal route requires convincing the Head Commissioner that you need to own. Even then you can only open carry outside your own property if you work in the Police force or an armed security agency. Yet the murder rate was #11 in the world for most of the 2000's and 2010's. No I won't say where it is.
@@iurifarenzena That’s why both countries are in the BRICS union. Perhaps it could mean that the governments share similar values :) To be honest, I do not know what is the actual level of crimes in Brazil. From what I’ve seen and read in the internet it’s crazy high. Perhaps it’s just the big cities like San Paolo and Rio. If my suggestions are right, crime level in Russia is much much lower. I mean, our problem is not that you can get robbed or killed by the gangsters on the street in a bad neighborhood, that’s thankfully a rare thing. However, the society is very atomised, people tend to live in a shitty conditions, poverty and hate each other. Russia is more about a dictatorship than about a chaos. It’s not rare that someone can kill another person while drunk, or because he didn’t like someone. Pointless agression is everywhere and neither police nor the society judge such behavior. The main law that works is the right of the strong, if you can inspire fear in people in your neighborhood, you’ll have a great life experience, if not - you’ll be in trouble. The police just won’t do anything in 99% of cases if someone gets scammed, robbed, killed etc, there too busy pushing political opposition and getting a big salary for that. It is not rare that police staff is picked from the lowest social bottom with all the consequences that come from it. But if someone dares to protect himself from a criminal then he will get a lot of trouble, for police it becomes the religious crusade to put a man in jail, because if people will think that it is normal to stand for themselves, to take the responsibility for their own lives, to unite and achieve justice, that will mean a huge threat to entire regime that is rotten from the bottom to the top, and that would mean that a lot of current police officers will probably move to jail themselves, or get exiled to the lowest parts of society where they belong
Mental Outlaw is the kind of guy I look up to. I also noticed this stuff about most tech bros, and even I was in that boat at one point. Have been in the gym for a little over a year, and brought my sub par 40lbs bench press, up to 155lbs.
I wasnt always a gun person but I saw things changing and decided to get educated on the topic as well as properly trained, all before I purchased anything because a tool is only as good as you know how to use it.
Martial arts are a waste of time, your strongest weapons are your legs. Your life is more valuable than anything so you are better off running if a situation seems to be bad or is getting bad.
I really appreciate how you spoke about your opinions. I’ve been fortunate enough to grow up in places that don’t need guns and I’ve been pretty against owning them. But because of my naivety towards firearms, I typically recuse myself from some conversations. Everyone has bias, but sometimes bias and expertise come together. Thank you for doing your best to present yourself authentically and respecting others’ background
Something that gets always overlooked is a dog. Having a dog around you or better yet multiple guard dogs is invaluable. A good trained dog is deadly and highly observant. Pair that with a strong body, martial arts, weapons, and make everyone know you aren’t a target worth attacking, and also don’t tempt anyone to attack you is a sure way you probably won’t ever encounter a threat in a bad neighbourhood let alone a civilised one. Most of these things mentioned aren’t even costly if you can afford it get a body guard
Dogs AND weapons AND martial arts? The martial arts are overkill (unless you take into account that the other two aren't always there with you). But I agree that dogs are a very effective deterrent. If you are a dog person and concerned about physical security, that is a great strategy.
A concealed carry 9mm pistol is perfect for most people. You can get them in pretty compact sizes like my S&W M&P Shield. Yes it’s only a single stack with 8 rounds per magazine but that should be more than enough for personal protection in close quarters.
Here's a couple tips; if you live alone tuck a piece of paper into your doorway, if someone opens it then you will not see it, if you find a hidden camera, obstruct it with a sticker or marker instead of removing so the perp comes to try and fix it, keep in mind where you can run, read signs, understand layouts, walk around buildings and streets a bit to understand it all more.
I agree: “stay strapped or get clapped” However, even better than carrying a gun into that situation, was never being in that situation in the first place. As the saying goes “nothing good happens after midnight”. Obviously we don’t know the details of how/why, but what was so important to be on the streets at 2:30am?
We had it pass a while ago here in TX. It’s nice to not have to renew concealed carry anymore and now I can arm my girls without them having to get a permit.
Typically people who come from either small towns or privileged families lack situational awareness. The bad thing about never experiencing struggles is that they can make you naive to the real world. I was raised in bad neighborhoods then I moved to a small town and I was shocked at how people are so trustworthy and naive. I guess it's because when you live in a small town everybody knows everybody so they tend to trust each other ... Even mass shootings, it's normally done by spoiled kids who come from good families.
Umm, ethnically homogeneous areas tend to be high trust and low crime. That's not naivety, it's the people and culture of those rural small town communities.
I disagree with small towns. Being from a small town, there are a LOT of guns there. Far more than in "the hood" or any other city. There's just less crime because people tend to take care of themselves and provide for themselves and don't need to steal from each other like people in crowded places seem to feel the need to.
i work in security installing cctv and access control. i always tell ppl that at the end of the day these are good deterrents but ultimately ppl are crazy and dont care. thats why carrying is just the safety option on top of all this. but i live in texas in a city where murder rate is high so this could be advice thats only relevant to my city. but then again i do live in texas so people are usually showing off their gun collection to me while i work
Ironically, the reason I can't get a carry permit/FID in my state (Massachusetts) is because of my juvenile record (CFAA charges and some other cyber bs + some added delinquency when I was a teenager). The irony is that this history actually helped me land my first industry role. I'm still looking into my options but prob going have to hire a lawyer to see what can be done. If anyone has a similar experience here, plss hmu
This is the real deal man. People not understanding they are responsible for their security and not having a gun and training more importantly is such a danger to your community. Keep the good thoughts out there, people need to make the better choices.
If your country doesn't allow guns then get at least a knife. My country heavily regulates guns (ironically it also has very good self defense laws) so it's out of reach of people thta don't want to get a gun illegally (which is... surprisingly easy). I asked a friend that lives in a very bad part of town and he told me he never leaves home without his knife. That was his advice. He didn't even know you could have a gun legally, all gun owners he knew had gotten their guns illegally and use them to do criminal stuff. It's sad.

US is only the greatest after accounting for its ego.
yea
sure you do
Agree entirely.

I've always been aware of how small I am compared to the average guy. Being nerdy with a physically smaller body than most other males I came across made me hyperaware in certain places while walking and I always carried a knife while walking to school (I'd stash it under a rock in the woods nearby before going in, I wasn't a psycho). The day after I turned 21, I bought a pistol. Big or small, we all bleed and that's been true forever. There's a reason small people still exist lol.
Smooool boooooi!

Carrying weapons around will just lead to a stabbing contest by making the aggressor even more unhinged. A gun is safer but carrying that is basically impossible everywhere.
small king! if you want you can change that anyday, starting with regular fitness training. of course height is something unchangable but you would still develop muscle and if you then pick up mma or any other form of self defence, you would be good to go :)

This is funny because all signal and IT guys from the military understand the importance of this.
Same with IT guys in general.

It's a lost cause to try and talk people into getting firearms, often they only think of it when something happens to them or someone close to them. Up until that point they think they can fight off 3 people at once with a baton.
You mean with a phone. 😂
Meh, let them then. They don't want to own a firearm, less competition for work for me in the long run.

Someone already drew one on you? Not so helpful. Give them what they want. Any other situation? Probably helpful! And if they shoot you anyway? Helpful to have a gun, because maybe if you're lucky you'll wound them, and that will help them to be caught, which will give your family closure.

Sweet mother of based. This has always been my mindset. If I'm going to walk around with a 3500$ computer in my bag, why not spend an equal or greater amount on life protecting equipment like a firearm and first aid kit? I first learned about opsec and sec concepts in the military, so when I moved tech a lot of the enthusiasm for firearms and personal protection and safety made the jump with me.

“My tech bros should be getting tooled up”
The tech industry needs more people like you in addition to people like Bob Lee.
Stay safe
Understandable mindset. May I ask, from what country are you?
It could easily be Brazil that you are taking about
@@iurifarenzena That’s why both countries are in the BRICS union. Perhaps it could mean that the governments share similar values :)
To be honest, I do not know what is the actual level of crimes in Brazil.

Pair that with a strong body, martial arts, weapons, and make everyone know you aren’t a target worth attacking, and also don’t tempt anyone to attack you is a sure way you probably won’t ever encounter a threat in a bad neighbourhood let alone a civilised one.
