To me, this is the best version of this song that exists. Their drummer especially was really grooving, quite difficult to play the song on drums exactly the same. I recently found this song and I am incredibly happy that I did!
2:04 - Asking the sound engineer in the middle of an absolutely tight performance to amp up his backup singers says it all about the kind of gentleman Bowie was.
When he died, I watched this video 4x a day for weeks. I just love how he fucking cool he was. That solo section where he’s clapping and smiling and then that kick. He always commanded the best musicians, and this band played this song in such a unique way. Really one of my favorite live Bowie videos.

Since David's passing I've spent a good amount of time learning more of his wonderful music he left for us to enjoy, and these UA-cam performances we are fortunate to watch. I watched and read interviews and was a bit turned off by interviewers over his career who in some way inferred he does not have a 'real' job as 'we others do' or similar references. David Bowie was from another world!! Just look at this performance, he's having so much fun and is fully enjoying himself on stage. He was such a wonderful human being and it always showed in his live performances. (recommend you to watch the entire live by request performance) Bowie is by far my all-time favourite artist, throughout his long career he made so many amazing songs and touched many different genres. I don't know why I never found this sooner. This is absolutely the best and most outstanding version live. I just keep playing it over and over and over. David Bowie at his best! Phenomenal!
Oh baby he's so sweet. But honestly how somebody can look THAT good in their fifties? Incredible concert, this song is so good, it's one of my favorites. David Bowie is the man, one of the greatest and most magnificent personages in the world of music (and not only) ever. Such a shame he's not with us anymore. I wish I could've seen him live.
This is the best ever live recording of any artist so far......Hard to beat...truly an amazing live sound, a credit to David.....R.I.P.If any one asked me what is the best live sound ever heard, I would direct them to this clip..... :)

The front man of all front men. 2023 and he remains the gold standard- Uber cool. The counter melodies and textures- so beautiful. Heavily nuanced music. If I could come back as any musician… David Bowie.
I was always a Bowie fan, and being a d.j. I thought I would probably get to meet him as I did many musicians, instead I met him in the oddest of settings, near my home, at a swimming hole in Woodstock. I noticed him the way I notice most attractive famlies. and we nodded, and smiled at one another. As the day wore on, He walked toward me, and as soon as he got close I realized who he was, by the eye color and the accent. "Excuse me, he said , but my family and I are moving, would you happen to know where I might get some boxes?". Well I guess you could try the liquor store, they always have a lot and usually give them away free". Ahh the liquour store, what a great idea"! he said I never would've thought of it". We talked a bit more ,_ ( about what we had in common, family, a love of music, me a d. j. with some backup singing, acting, me a few small parts in independent films, his including the 80 's film "The Hunger" , he was surprised and happy that I remembered it. After signing a tshirt for me, we all started packing our things up, and he said I hope to see you again, but something tells me I will hear from you in the future. I hope so I said, I' d like to make a film someday" " Well I belive you will, but in any event , you' re a star now". Thank you, that mean' s a lot coming from you. And it did just goes to show you we are all stars, and most important of all, David Bowie was a rarity, a star, an actor, a performer, musician, familyman, gentlemen, friend, and well I could go on and on, but I like to think he was and is of another world, one where he has returned to live ,still shining bright! Thank you David for a wonderful day, and all the wonderful art and music you have left behind. My family, my friends, and WKARMA RADIO will never forget you.. Your music will never cease to delight us all. I'm Maribeth, and I. hope you are all safe and warm, sorry weekends over, but I will try to keep the party going, heres David kicking off some great music, remember when there are no stars in the sky its cause we are all on the street! 😘
+Julie Evans : yes he was a lovely person, very kind , and down to earth,( kinda. funny that he played the man who fell from earth,( lol) .. I really enjoyed the time I spent with him, and his family( they all seemed very happy and sweet too). +Maribeth That is an excellent story and so glad that he turned out to be as much of a gentleman as I had hoped. Thanks for sharing! If anyone does a biography on him, your story should be in it!

Absolutely stunning, flawless in every way, they don't make music like this anymore. And even though he's gone now, his music will remain forever. Thank you David Bowie.
Who else thinks that this was shot in a style ahead of its time? The camera sharpness, focus, angles, context, everything--looks way newer than 2000. To say nothing of the fact that this is my favorite Bowie song.
London boy from a Jamaican household who grew up listening to Marley, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse etc. Older brother had the most eclectic music taste and would listen to everything from the Beatles, to Frank Sinatra, to the Rolling Stones to Ijahman Levi, you name it musically he introduced me to it. He was a massive Bowie fan as well. One of my top ten songs of all time, David Bowie on absolute top form. Life on Mars is another all time classic.
I'm in my 60's, was always a huge fan of Bowie, and used to have the recorded version of Ashes to Ashes as my alarm call for a while in the 1980's. Back then -> a rotary timer switch on a tape machine! I'd thought it was the most haunting song he'd ever recorded and wanted to wake up to it every morning. Today, seeing this amazing live performance, and seeing David so happy as he dances ( like an alien ) to this, makes me happy too. But yes, with a little tear in my eye.... What a talented and beautiful man he was.
I'm only 23 but so upset about music these days. So I'd rather listening to music like this. I kept my hope till the day of his death to see this wonderful inspiring human being live someday. I'm from switzerland but I swear I'd go to any place on earth to see this legend. And now this dream is something that will never happen. But I keep my hope in music, that it will somehow find the good way again. I'm jealous of everyone who had the honor and joy to live/growup/being teenie during these awesome times between 60-90. Someday when I'll have children I will introduce them Bowie as early as possible.
+mandoholikerin HI mandoholikerin .... I have spent the last 72 hours reading/devouring tributes/articles/music clips/interviews .... just so damn unbelievable that David Bowie is gone. I was scrolling through here reading comments and if it is any consolation, I am sorry you never had the chance to see Bowie in concert.I was so lucky to have seen him a dozen times from 1974 through 1983. Here's my story from the first show on the Diamond Dogs tour in Detroit Michigan: David Bowie - Cobo Arena, June 23rd,1974 - Diamond Dogs Tour. I borrowed my Mom's Instamatic, and had front row seats. This concert is what hooked me on photography !!! This was at Cobo Arena. June 23rd, 1974. This was my 9th concert that I had attended. There were about 6 or 8 of us and we had Tier B tickets. I was stoked. My Mom gave me her Instamatic to take to the show, as she knew how much I loved Bowie. I started wandering around and walked onto the main floor, with no one asking me any questions at all. I walked right past the usher at the end of the 1st section and strolled right up to the front of the stage. I was there for about 2 minutes looking around, and a guy to my left in the 1st row, was tapping the empty seat next to him and said, "Do you want to sit here"? I sat and asked if the seat was taken, and he told me that the seats were comp from a connection, his friend couldn't make it, and the seat was mine. The lights suddenly went out, he tapped my shoulder, slapped me five, and said "Welcome to the front row, enjoy the show". What a way to see my rock hero !!! And I had my Mom's Instamatic. Fabulous show ... excellent seats, a wonderful memory !!! Let me tell you, the experience of going to a Bowie concert was incredible. I feel so fortunate to have seen David Live !!!
+timishere1925 Thanks !!! This was my 9th concert overall, and 1st Bowie concert. My older brother David, ( I am #2 of 8) brought home the Ziggy Stardust LP after hearing it from a friend. He then brought home Hunky Dory about a week later, and we got MWSTW a month later. I was 15 that Summer of 1972, and 17 when Diamond Dogs was released. I bought Aladdin Sane and Pin Ups when they were released in 1973, and I was so impressed with Bowie's music, his fashion, his artistry. Found a bootleg of the Ziggy Tour at a local record store, and was blown away with the live sound. My brother Daniel, who was14 months younger, we bought cool flared jeans to go along with our 4 inch clogs that we walked miles in. LOL My sister Diane,#4, always heard me playing Bowie, she 12 in the Summer of 1972, and she and I were talking this week about how Bowie was ingrained in our musical blood for so many years, and what a great loss it is.
+denrosz No, it's one of my biggest regrets. I feel fortune to have something such as this on video, although I realize it doesn't begin to compare with seeing him live in concert. You're a very good story teller. I love hearing about the fashion, etc. You're really able to paint a picture with your words. Thank you again.
Amazing! RIP David Jones aka. Bowie. Safe travels Starman. Thanks for being a part of my life. Thanks for your music. Blink to us once in a while from above, so we know it's you. 🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇

Can’t quite nail it !
And everyone I play this for , that never heard it live before , are all in agreement.
They Love It !!!!!❤️🤠🔪🎵
Напишу по-русски, есть ли кто из наших? Господи, он прекрасен!!! Я влюбилась, я в восторге, я в восхищении! Искренность, актёрское мастерство, живость исполнения - это не каждому дано!
One of Bowie's best performances. My goodness. One would have to believe that there is life on Mars.
I'm also obsessed with this video...,what a beautiful man he was , creative not afraid of changes and pioneering the music industry.
A great artist, a global icon.
Our respects from chile, South America.
You should not go.
I don't know why I never found this sooner. This is absolutely the best and most outstanding version live. I just keep playing it over and over and over. David Bowie at his best! Phenomenal!
The first time I hear this live version and it gave me goosebumps. David is sorely missed.
Tears for me! Amazing performance!
This is so beautiful. No one else understands. Thanks forever David.
This is the best ever live recording of any artist so far......Hard to beat...truly an amazing live sound, a credit to David.....R.I.P.If any one asked me what is the best live sound ever heard, I would direct them to this clip..... :)
Calm down.
@@trenchant63 maybe you should calm down lol? this is their opinion and even if you don’t agree you have to admit, david sounds awesome here!
@@emily-xj3xv Agreed. I just don't believe in absolutes like "best ever live recording of any artist to far."
@@trenchant63 oh yeah i can understand what you’re saying
A brilliant & Amazing Man ... Totally agree ... Absolutely ... and then I try to cover a few songs as Space Boy . on YT ... hahahaha .... what a laugh.
The front man of all front men. 2023 and he remains the gold standard- Uber cool. The counter melodies and textures- so beautiful. Heavily nuanced music. If I could come back as any musician… David Bowie.
Well I am a qualified lesbian
No one can ever beat how good he was :) I wasn't even born when this was filmed and I love it.
He was 10,000 steps ahead of any artist, and the best smile ever.......
+Maribeth Stern Sounds like he was a very nice man!I wish I'd got to meet him!
+Julie Evans : yes he was a lovely person, very kind , and down to earth,( kinda. funny that he played the man who fell from earth,( lol) .. I really enjoyed the time I spent with him, and his family( they all seemed very happy and sweet too). I will always cherish the fact that I got to meet a living legend and that he turned out to be all I admired and more. Thanks for. writing.😘
+Maribeth Stern you sound like a beautiful star as well. Thank you for sharing. God bless
+Maribeth That is an excellent story and so glad that he turned out to be as much of a gentleman as I had hoped. Thanks for sharing! If anyone does a biography on him, your story should be in it!
+elucid8 Thank you for a lovely compliment. DAVID BOWIE FAN'S (OF COURSE, WHO ELSE) ARE SOME OF THE MOST WONDERFUL PEOPLE I' VE HAD THE PLEASURE, TO HAVE GOTTEN MAIL FROM. I'm sorry that I forgot ,your name, but to the lovely lady, I think your name is Paula, You said I sound like a b
The bass player takes this to the next level
This Genius wrote the soundtrack to my life ,,,I miss him 💔
Absolutely stunning, flawless in every way, they don't make music like this anymore. And even though he's gone now, his music will remain forever. Thank you David Bowie.
That bass...awesome!
WHO was the bass player???
@@susanhamilton6315 Mark Platì or something like that
Amazing. The bass is fantastic. What a version!! Every piece and person playing is brilliant!
His smile/joy on the hooks is still absolutely infectious 23 years later!
i have listened this song like 30 times today
wow David never disappoints with his live performances. I enjoy his live ones more than the studio version personally
Vidar Landvik he was a great performer.
Who else thinks that this was shot in a style ahead of its time? The camera sharpness, focus, angles, context, everything--looks way newer than 2000. To say nothing of the fact that this is my favorite Bowie song.
I don't think good focus was ahead of its time
London boy from a Jamaican household who grew up listening to Marley, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse etc.
Such a beautiful, exotic creature. Irreplaceable.
His hair his style so perfect
What I liked about David he was so creative in his music he was himself
The way the chorus singing melody leads to the catchy piano hook first verse chord progression change is pure genius.
Yeah you’re right
I'm in my 60's, was always a huge fan of Bowie, and used to have the recorded version of Ashes to Ashes as my alarm call for a while in the 1980's.
Here's my story from the first show on the Diamond Dogs tour in Detroit Michigan:
David Bowie - Cobo Arena, June 23rd,1974 - Diamond Dogs Tour.
+denrosz so just to be clear, that was your 9th Bowie concert or 9th concert in general? Great story by the way.
+timishere1925 Were you ever able to see Bowie in concert?
+denrosz No, it's one of my biggest regrets. I feel fortune to have something such as this on video, although I realize it doesn't begin to compare with seeing him live in concert. You're a very good story teller. I love hearing about the fashion, etc. You're really able to paint a picture with your words. Thank you again.
Such a great live version
Amazing! RIP David Jones aka. Bowie. Safe travels Starman. Thanks for being a part of my life. Thanks for your music. Blink to us once in a while from above, so we know it's you. 🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇🎇

It still hurts.
He was the star of my life. Now he is sparkling for the whole mankind.
Miss the great man..
I am very happy to have personally met David Bowie. An extraordinary man who radiated contagious joy.
People who listen David Bowie go directly to heaven !
No matter when or where, HE WILL BE A STAR ALWAYS SHINNING FOR US!
Still listening in 2024 !!!!!!
This is my favorite Bowie song and performance!
Just watching him enjoy listening to the band play at the end is so great.
Tears streaming down my face while I rock my ass off. Perfect and clean. Every note is personified perfection. Miss him massively. I love you David.
How can this ever be repeated again? this is history right here folks
Just hormonally cried to this song for the fourth time today thank you
