I have 2 different oaks. One that is pinkish in color, but clearly has the longer rays of the white oak (more than 1" long) and the pores look like a mixture, some of them are clogged some are open, some are half open. So this makes me think it is white oak. The other one is darker pink-brown (little purple), shorter rays like the red oak, but the pores are super small (smaller than the other board) and seem also semi-clogged which confuses me, I was hoping they were open. By the way, I planed the endgrains of both, so they are super clean and dust free. :S
Glad to see a splitting video, Tim!!! Nice change of pace. And you carry a lot of punch in those swings, you can get through about anything. Tough guy^5s
Okay so wich is best for boat building? Secondly can Red oak not be made less thirsty by making it drink a solution of diluted acrylic fluid beforehand thus sealing its thirst?
good thanks, but volume varies too much
red oak is more porous. you can blow air through red oak, but not white. get a bowl of water, blow it like a really tough straw, and look for bubbles.
Please control your volume.
