Changing from human to animal eye detect AF in photo mode also changes it in video mode, even though it doesn't work. That's burned me a few times, filming myself in squirrel detect AF. It refused to see me as a squirrel even though I spend a lot of time with them. Give us the firmware Sony!!

I think I've seen animal eye AF actually work in photo mode on my a6600 once... Wonderful menu items that either barely work or don't work at all (and a pretty bad menu system at that). Probably would be amazing by now if they bothered to update existing cameras.

I also have to agree with the rant. I have 2 FX3 cameras, an A1 and an A7sIII. I get why the A7sIII might not get the firmware updates but, of all that is good, either make the FX3 a true cinema line camera, and give your flagship A1 camera ALL of the bells and whistles...or just tell me why you cannot do that. Because right now I feel like you just took my money and never even said thank you afterwards.

Something I should have mention in the rant was two years ago when FX3 came out, they released a7siii firmware giving it S-cinetone on the same day so it didn’t fall behind.
I hope they can return to that way of thinking.

    • @DanielDiaz-ym6bf
      @DanielDiaz-ym6bf Рік тому +3

The S-cinetone was a glitch in the Matrix because they are both the same camera. Besides this one time, this is the Sony I know. They tend to “solve” the issues with new cameras, not new FW. It happened to me with the a6500 and a6600. Every single camera that came after was better FW wise and no FW update arrived for my cameras. I have always felt left behind by Sony. UA-camrs using full frame cameras were very happy and excited chanting “Sony fixed it, they listen!”, because they could upgrade to a new camera. They reach the top of the ladder and now, the full frame lineup is stepping into the next cycle. Starting from the bottom, all cameras will be better than the previous one. Like it happened with the a7s2, you have to wait for the next release. If you want a better a1, you have to wait for the a1m2.
I also hope they find a way to do meaningful FW upgrades for cameras that are at least less than 2 years old.

I cannot get simple parts, it fell of a table and broke like a cheap TV remote control. Very frustrating and not an asset in this context.

No, the FX6 doesn’t have S35…in 4K. It only has it in HD which is rather useless if shooting 4K; you may as well just shoot 4K and crop 1.5x in post which will give it the same FOV as the HD S35 but higher resolution, but not 4K. 🙂

Curiosity has thinking about switching from my FS7 to the FX30. I'll be losing out on XLR connections, built-in ND filters, 4k DCI, no-crop 180 HD, waveform monitor etc. But I would be gaining autofocus, dual ISO, lightweight design and many others. Chime in. I'm a documentary and narrative filmmaker. I use a mixture of canon FD glass and GM lenses.

Amazing video as always Philip! Touched on all of the topics perfectly that we needed to hear about the FX30 before buying it. The animal eye focus is odd how it only picks up eyes and nothing else. You were the only one to cover that out of the videos I watched. Sony has to start treating its consumers that spend a fortune with firmware updates too. It's not fair that an A1 can't be updated to compete with the A7C in certain regards.
I'm really sorry to hear about your back problems. I've stopped accepting operating jobs in my early 30s because of my back, so this hits me hard and I can't imagine the pain you must feel. I think you make reasoned and reasonable arguments and I really hope Sony listen (but won’t hold my breath). For many these points may seem arbitrary or, mistakenly, entitled - but I think your point about investment is really important. These cameras and all of the lenses and accessories we buy are investments and it is not unreasonable to expect, in good faith, software updates to be rolled out to already existing cameras. After all, this is what happens with many other types of technology. Thanks again for you videos & for the beautiful images you create - especially of your lovely cats 😻

Thanks Sam. The animal eye autofocus of course is the killer for me, I bought the a1 truly expecting it to get it…after all it’s the flagship and if the entry level had it and they updated the a7c and zv-e10 I assumed it would, clearly a big mistake; I bought it after the a7iv came out too.
I’ve got the a7rv to review and whilst it’s good and has the new features it’s inferior photos and videos in every single way. The stupid thing is I’ve had a camera that does it all for over two years, my Canon R5. I am going to have to start using it an my cat channel camera from now on.

Hello Philip. If you're still struggling with sciatica and haven't tried a grounding mat, I'd highly reccomend you give it a try. My mother had the exact same thing you have. I gave her a mat to try after she had exhausted all her other remedies, and it worked like nothing else. She had tried everything. It truly worked for her. I know it can sound odd, but there are many studies on it. There was a big study published by the NIH about it called: "The effects of grounding (earthing) on inflammation, the immune response, wound healing, and prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases."

I completely agree with software updates! I got Sony A1, and all they added in, science the release, is only 4:2:2 8K and Raw sizes.
I shoot reviews, and the product showcase feature is important to mee, thus it's in every cheper Sony camera!
Also I got Xperia Pro-I, and it recently got update to connect it to camera with cable to use as a monitor and stream video via USB C, and I can't with my A1, cause it doesn't have Streaming with USB, so annoyed. Also the focus brething features, and Cine EI, where is it. So yeah, I love the camera, but every A7R I had before, did get way more updates during the time I owned them so far. We need to make a petition for Sony to start doing something to the flagship cameras. They are running around too much these days with ther Vloging marketing team, trying to get newbies in, and forgeting about the PROs. Sony make a statement, that you are into updating cameras soon, and everyone will be happy.

At the height of the original A9/A7III Sony was best in class regarding firmware updates and released some real nice upgrades through software but now for some reason they have fallen far behind Nikon, Canon and others. If I payed 7 grands for a Sony A1 I would be rather pissed. Lets see if the new cameras from Canon/Nikon forces Sony to lower prices or start releasing firmware updates to keep their cameras competitive.

another informative review, thanks. I think Sony need to look at the consistency over the Cinema line range of cameras, ie focus breathing, menu layout, software features. Fine if hardware differs like internal ND on Fx6 and not the Fx3, Fx3 smaller to suit gimbal better etc. I want to be able to move seamlessly from Fx9 to Fx6 to Fx3 without having to remember "oh which one has focus breathing, is it on or off on which camera, why does the menu layout not match, which page is it in again" get my drift Sony ! Surely this has to be the easiest thing to achieve !! Sony want a Line of Cinema cameras but the "line" is not very straight !!

FX30 is a missed opportunity to revitalize the abandoned APSC range. If one was to play to the strenghts of a smaller sensor size, you'd want faster readout, ideally global shutter or at least 30fps burst. If it had 'big' pixels 12MP sensor one could hope for better low light performance also, a problem with smaller sensors. Unless you want and do 8K there's really no need for a 'Cine' camera with lots and lots of pixel count. Remember the issues the 6400 had, having to line skip for 1080 which led to soft unusable image. Same here. Where is 6stop IBIS? Where is the innovation? I don't need focus breathing comp, happy to see it, as it prompts my brain onto focussing to another subject when I see it. This is for me as natural as seeing 24fps 'cinematic' flicker when panning. What I do want in a Cine camera is eND, global shutter, timecode (my A7S3 is left behind once again) and a decent menu with shutter angle and waveform. If Sony doesn't have enough crew to create decent firmware, open the SDK and let 3rd party take over. Ricoh has plugins for their Z1. Sony has abandoned Playmemories. Panasonic is looking better than ever and I am still waiting to reinvest the money from my sold A73 into something worthwhile 10-bit. But I cannot say the FX30 is it, apart from being cheap.

Leaving the obvious issues with Elon on the shelf for the moment, Teslas frequently upgrade the existing vehicles with new features, big & small, resulting in happy customers that spread the word about their happiness. In 2022 there's no excuse for a car, truck, boat, camera to be the exact same car 6 years later. Car manufacturers have yet to wake up and recognize this expectation.

I am updating this pinned comment to address the recent video about the sponsor of this video being a "scam". First, here is what I originally had as the pinned comment, which is still important.
Warp glitches: Two shots from around 14:05 have funky warp stabilise, which I used as it was so windy. In the final export, I accidentally left it set to no motion; that's why it looks super weird.
    ua-cam.com/video/3mFmgVKUoi0/v-deo.html
    ______________________
This comment is a response to the video by Scott Shafer's catchily called "Established Titles Scam -UA-cam's BIGGEST Con! Graham Stephan & Andrei Jikh" in it, he claims they are a "scam."
Whilst this was initially concerning to hear, most of what he said repeats what is obvious when buying from them and is on their website. As you should be able to tell from my flippant and tongue-in-cheek sponsor slot, this a bit of fun to give to someone who has everything; this is nothing more than a novelty gift, like my "credit card" from the "Bank Of Barbie"!
I accepted this sponsor spot as I knew I could have a bit of fun with it as it was for something ridiculous but funny.
Let me address the points made in that video.
1: "You aren't a real Lord or Lady if you buy one of their title packs."
Of course, you aren't. Established Titles state that with the "historical custom" of owning land in Scotland, you can "refer to yourself as a Lord". This has no official bearing on anything; if owning land in Scotland meant you became a Lord or Lady, then every homeowner there would be one! I can refer to myself as a banana if I want to 🍌. You can change all sorts of things to have a prefix but nothing official. I cannot change my name to "Lord Philip Bloom" without being done with a deed poll, so my first name becomes Lord, and my middle name is Philip. 🤣
Getting a life peerage (becoming a Lord) is not something you can buy, well, not legally! If you could buy one, it would cost substantially more than $45! You could, for example, be awarded one for services the government recognise; you can also get a hereditary title if the King thinks you are worthy. I am not, apparently! Getting a proclamation declaring you as a Lord is exactly what t looks like, a bit of fun, a novelty gift.
2: "The tree planting in Scotland isn't real."
Established Titles say they are preserving Scottish woodlands; Scott has somehow translated this as they plant new trees in Scotland; this is never claimed anywhere on their site. They say they have bought "hundreds of acres of land" and show them all on their website, owning these and not building on them is how they are "preserving Scottish woodlands." The tree planting is not done by them but by the two charities mentioned that they give money to for each sale. One Tree Planted's website says that over 2 million trees have been planted through Established Titles. I cannot verify this, but I will contact them to ask, as this is the only part of what you are paying for that does matter. The charity tree planting is global, not localised.
3: "You don't actually get any real land."
On the FAQ, the land you pay for is called a "souvenir plot". It's not real; you can't visit it and certainly can't build on it! Do they mark off a real 1 square foot of it for you? Maybe, but it doesn't really matter, as it makes no actual difference. You may as well go to your garden centre and buy a 1 square foot bit of turf as that's a more useful piece of land. I have the coordinates of my plot though, I must visit it at some point! If you are nearby and fancy taking some of it, please email them to me. :)
    55°44'32.875086264"N 3°15'33.54640517844"W
4: "The owners of the company are shady."
This was the weakest part of the video; nothing he showed was particularly shady concerning this company; they aren't hiding anything; they just have a weird name for the umbrella company. Their registered office is in Hong Kong and not Scotland. It doesn't state that the address on their website is their company address, which isn't anywhere on their site.
Please remember this is a novelty gift, like getting a fake newspaper front page printed with you as the headline or paying £39 to have a star named after you. Is that star now called "Dave Smith" because you paid that company for it? Of course not, I am sure if you could travel there and there was intelligent life they would not be very welcoming of you insisting they call their sun "Dave Smith"! That's more absurd than becoming a real Lord with "Established Titles"!
Other companies will let you buy "land" and get a "title", they also cannot give you a real title. I received a gift of one of these many years ago, I treated it as a funny present, and I haven't referred to myself as a Lord after it; that would be rather absurd! The certificate telling me I am is framed and hung on the wall in my toilet! That gift cost A LOT more than the $45 one from Established Titles!
The hysteria around that video and this "scam" is so overblown. This is very much what is on the tin, a novelty. Whether Scott made this video to get views or genuinely took what "Established Titles" sell as real, I don't know. I always thought it was perfect as a gift for my American friends, who would probably take it seriously!
In my opinion, the people being outraged over this based on that video or by reading the website are just embarrassed that they are gullible enough to believe that you actually would become a Lord or Lady!
Something important to highlight is that your purchases are fully refundable within 60 days; not many "scams" give you a full refund! To check this, I emailed them to get one for my purchase in late October, and I was refunded with no questions asked. If you bought a title thinking you were now a genuine Lord or Lady and are upset to find out you aren't, email them to get a refund. 🙂
There are many real scams out there, like the comments on my videos alleging to be from me saying you've won a prize and to contact me on telegram. Please don't; they will ask you to send money for shipping and possibly import tax. Don't contact them; instead, please report those comments, as UA-cam seems unable to stop them. Even accounts I've blocked still manage to get comments through!
To sum up, it's a shame people have become hysterical over something so daft. Unconnected to it, they are not sponsoring any more of my videos as it seems not enough of my audience bought anything from them. Oh well! The proclamation here includes my cat Harriet as a lady to encapsulate the absurdity. She isn't; she's my Princess! Now, where can I buy something to make her one officially?

An unexpected side effect of your videos: I'm a Brit that has lived in Japan for the last 16 years and your videos always make me want to move back home. There is a type of beauty that you manage to capture that makes me forget about the kebabs and Wetherspoons and pine for the homeland.
I actually think that is the primary reason I now watch. I'm rarely excited by new camera products anymore.

Philip, i have had degenerated disc issues on my lumbar spine since 2008. I stopped everything and only just before the covid pandemic i started doing yoga, stretches, core strengthening, walking, cutting out inflammatory oils (vegetable oils - corn, soy, canola, sunflower) replaced with extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, ghee. Optimized sleep, embraced daily sun exposure and so on! I am a new person now, my back pain is totally under control. I am even lifting weights now for resistance training. I am fortunate i never had any surgeries. My early forties is better than my late twenties now. I implore you to applying the aforementioned tweaks. Wish you well brother!

Once you become aware of the games the Japanese camera manufactures play you'll never be completely happy. Often it is possible to add a feature or update a camera but in doing so it might compete against another model or the fix is viewed as a selling point to get you buy the next version. The strategy is make every model they sell have some feature that the other ones don't so you will need to buy more than one camera and every few years you'll want to buy the next version.

Manufacturers are careful about creating products that are too good. They want you to buy multiple products with specialized functions, and they want to create avenues for upgrades and accessories that you will have to pay for. There is no incentive to create a flagship product that is so good that you will not have to upgrade or accessorize for a long time, or that has a base price so expensive that very few can afford to buy it.

2:16 Excellent point. Most shots from most cameras often look similar after grading. Extremely depressing for gear heads. Also depressing, most cameras look great when shot by a highly skilled filmmaker, like Philip Bloom. Philip could shoot a VHS camcorder from 1985 and make it look great. In fact he probably has. This is the problem with all camera reviews. Talent is the key variable and you can't buy it. Unless you hire PB to shoot all your movies.
