    Ideally, you’d have a setup at your house. For example, at my home, I have a NEMA 14-50 outlet. But what if you can’t install a charger at your home like this? Maybe you don’t have a garage or live in an apartment complex that won’t install a charger? That’s when you’ll have to go public
    At home, depending on your equipment, you’ll likely get Level 2 charging rates. This will get you between 20mi of charge per hour which is around 31kph.
    If you don’t want to wait that long, you’ll want to find a DC Fast Charger. Some even call these Level 3 chargers. The most common connector for a DC Fast Charger is the CHAdeMO plug and is popular in both the US and Europe. The last option regarding charging connectors is for Tesla. The Tesla Supercharger could be called a Level 4 charger with the fastest rates available.
    // evobsession.com/?s=charging+101
    With over 1,000 locations across the US EVgo is relatively small but does seem to have decent availability in more urban areas. As far as costs go EVgo offers several plans depending on your needs. When looking at the plan choices, it seemed confusing, especially since they charge based on the amount of time versus the amount of energy.
    Next, we have the most extensive charging network provider, ChargePoint. At the station by my house, the rate was $0.35 per kWh which may sound high, but when you consider our peak rates in San Diego are over 0.40, it’s a good deal. In addition to the per kWh rate, they will limit the amount of time you can charge at a station. T
    Another popular network here in southern California is Blink. Blink reports over 4K chargers and they do offer fast charging.
    A new startup from San Francisco, Volta, is looking to disrupt this market with free charging. The model is based on showing ads on their massive display stations located next to where you plug in to charge.
    Tesla owners get some additional options with the supercharger and destination charger networks. The supercharger network is currently the fastest way to charge of any EV. In about 30min you can get upwards of 170 miles, just under 275km of charge.
    The supercharger network has over 7K chargers and is prevalent in the US, Europe, and Asia.
    For Model S and X owners who purchased before May of 2017 Supercharging is Free. New Model S and X owners that used a referral code, such as ours which you can get at • Who Killed the Tesla R... also get free supercharging.
    public.tableau.com/profile/be...
    In addition to the superchargers, Tesla partnered with many hotels and malls to offer destination chargers similar to what you can install at your home. These chargers are free for all Tesla’s but often are reserved for patrons of the store or hotel hosting them.
    When it comes to finding public chargers, there are lots of options. In my experience the best one is plugshare.
    //Charging
    www.plugshare.com/
    openchargemap.org/site
    www.afdc.energy.gov/fuels/ele...
    EV Match is another startup in this space is working to help pair drivers and people with chargers. The idea here is that people can share their home chargers with others in an Airbnb fashion where the host receives a small fee for providing you with a charge port and juice for your journey.
    www.evmatch.com/
    So with all these options hopefully you can rest easy when it comes to finding a place to charge.

    Finally someone who talks about this. Here in Paris (and all Europe ) it's a big problem because almost everyone lives in appartements and doesn't have a garage or a specific parking spot so you can't install a charging station. In Paris there is actually a charging network and it's actually pretty big but you have to pay for it when your just parking there. So you have to plug in then return to the car and park it somewhere else when you're done charging. I think the best solution would be to make a law so that every house has the obligation to install a charging point (if it's really large you have to put multiple charging points). The problem is that people will be saying it destroys the looks of our house and another problem would be how are you going to pay for power. But I think you could easily find a solution.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 років тому

      With wind and particularly solar energy, the cost of energy will eventually fall to near zero. So the marginal cost is the capital needed to install the charging points, which thankfully is relatively low; as low as a few hundred euros each.

    • @benediktschesch2577
      @benediktschesch2577 6 років тому

      Loanword Eggcorn ok for the energy even though there has to be a cost but the city could pay but for the charging station it could cost a lot so I think the owners should pay for them and the city could help pay if it's necessary

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 років тому

      I agree the owners should pay for them, however, best case, the costs are very low; in the hundreds of Euros each, so not much social support may be needed. For example, home owners who add an EVSE and have existing wiring may pay fewer than 500 Euros/Dollars/Pounds. It's only when new wiring needs to be added that the cost goes up a few hundred more. In any case, the costs are not large, since most buildings have electricity!

      I'm glad, for this video too. Big city USA, is much the same as Paris. In Chicago, Volta is popular, free lvl 2 for 2 hours. And many municipalities here offer free charging or charge the electric company going rate by kilowatt hour. With apartment and condo dwellers, with no garage, plug ins are popular such as chevy volt etc.

      wouldnt be so bad if they just said f it to the cord type and mandated a standardized outlet and let people deal with their own cords. same as every other appliance on the market.

    For someone who's considering go EV without home charging: ASK SOMEONE NEARBY FIRST (EV/PHEV OWNER).
    From my experience (I'm in WA) EV charging spot is NOT an issue. problem is EXPENSIVE charging cost. If you don't have a home charging and should rely on public charging station, please beware of charing cost. Generally, they're may more expensive than gas (cost per distance)
    - Urban Supercharger will be a solution, but it's only available in few spot right now.
    Thanks for informative video, that was helpful to understand how California's EV infrastructure. and I envy California folks that they have free charging network. :P

Don't forget to solar power your charger if your a home owner it just makes since to charge when the sun is shining and work at night ... LOL -- of course its good to have net metering or a battery to store up the sun if not.

    Please suggest a free standing level 2 charging station for home. I.e., my house is 51’ from the street, too far for the 25’-max. length cord and plug. I cannot charge the car in the driveway (I let my tenants use the driveway). I cannot wall mount a “charger” on the wall. I want to run an underground 240v cord/conduit underground from the house to a vertical post or metal enclosure adjacent to the street which would support the “charger” and a normal short cord and plug. Are you aware of any pedestal style level 2 charger that I can have installed in my yard? Thanks.

    So I am looking at getting a model 3 Long range rear wheel. My commute to work is 100 miles a day. I will eventually have a setup at home but it will be a little bit until that is installed. There is a supercharger 10 minutes from my work and would be able to charge on lunch (they last an hour). I have read though that you shouldn't use a supercharger all the time because it degrades the battery. I would need to charge the car every third day, is that too much on a supercharger?

    I think the partnership of chargepoint with Chevy is that when you purchase a Bolt, it already comes with a wall charger. Like the zoe here in the middle east, once you purchase one, you automatically have L2 charger, and includes installation from a professional company. Sad to say that the zoe sometimes turns into a "charger killer" based on experience, once you plug the charger to the car, thr charger sends sort of like a discharge current which fries the internal circuitry of the charging station

    Ben thank you I’m a huge fan, I live in an urban area, Bronx NY to be exact, my concern is battery percentage drop during north east winters and I live in an apartment complex with no charging situation. With that said there are many and I mean many charging stations not too far where I live and on my 1 hour commute to work many many options even my boss has a charging station at work that I could use so that’s not my issue. I’m not even worried about street parking and damage I live in NY it’s inevitable it is what it is. My sole concern is the percentage drop during the north east winters... i want a Tesla either pre owned or new model S,3 and or Y... do you know of anyone who has a similar situation and can put me at ease ? In Europe, the destination chargers are essentially basic Mennekes connector chargers. In a major shopping mall here in the Copenhagen area (Rødovre Centrum), there is 8 chargers in the lower parking level. Half of the chargers are reserved for Tesla's, the other half are available for all EV's, but they are all the same Tesla destination chargers, no adapter required.

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 років тому

      When Tesla first rolled out the Model S in the U.S., the standard J1772 connector would not handle the high currents they wanted for fast charging, so Tesla made their own connector. For Europe, China, etc., Tesla found the Mennekes connector would work for high power, so they used it. The near future is almost certainly CCS for fast charging, since it's supported by most car manufacturers, including Tesla.
      Having different connectors is dumb and slows down EV adoption, so the sooner the CCS standard is used by Tesla and Nissan, the better it will be for EVs. Almost everyone else is using CCS already, including GM, Ford, VW, BMW, Daimler, Audi, Porsche, Volvo, Fiat, Chrysler, etc.

    The problem with EV chargers in San Diego is that most of them, especially in downtown are located inside garages in which you need to pay to enter. Rates vary from $10-$20. That's not including the cost of charging itself. Sure, there are public chargers, but it is guaranteed you will be waiting for an open spot (day time hours).

      (due to a misconfiguration of the software to read charge state, not a problem with the battery, Tesla simply wanted the battery as an example of a high use unit to do further testing and configuration for future)

    No offense really meant Ben, but being a Tesla guy, you're kind of out of your element here when talking about non-supercharger chargers. Maybe, just maybe you have a CHAdeMO adapter and have visited a CHAdeMO once? Anyway, let me throw in two tips, from someone who has to use these chargers because I don't have a supercharger network. You did do a fairly good job -- just missed a couple points I think are key.
    1) Blink might be semi ubiquitous, at least when compared to other chargers in the area, but they are by far the most likely to be out of service. They break, and no one fixes them. Generally, they're only L2 or CHAdeMO, so if your car has CCS, you probably won't be using them -- you know, if by the off-chance they do work. There are 5 of these chargers in the parking structure I use down town when going to a ballgame. 2 of them work. Use the blink app and see how many are out there, and how many of those show up as "unavailable." 60-70% is probably a good ballpark number.
    2) While Blink sets their prices based on the area, and I think EVgo sets a price they use pretty much everywhere they exist, ChargePoint rates vary. Blink owns Blink chargers and EVgo owns EVgo, but ChargePoint is locally hosted. Businesses get these and set their own price. The connection and payment is handled by chargepoint, but a portion of the fee goes back to the owner. The price will be any combination of a connection fee (a fee just to plug in), a per minute/hour fee, and a per kWh fee. I've seen chargers anywhere from free to $2.00 to hook up, 30 cents a kWh and 5 cents a minute after 30 minutes, with the fee going up to $4/hour after 3 hours. The owner can really roll their own fee. We have these at work and it's a flat $0.95/hour with a minimum of an hour. After 4 hours the price goes up to $3/hour. This price was set by corporate and is the same fee on every one of our campuses across the USA -- not sure about our international locations. Anyway, if you're looking on plugshare and see a ChargePoint, look at the set fees. You may need to use the ChargePoint app to see the fees for a particular charger.
    3) Not all DCFC are equal. I've seen as low as 24KW and as high as 60kW. It does make a difference. If you're using EVgo, look for the ones with the red ABB on them. Those are the 125A chargers -- the fastest EVgo does, for now.

    LG and Samsung are slated to introduce next gen batteries that can charge about 200 miles in 6 minutes in the next few years. This will revolutionize EV's. This will also be a catalyst for current gas stations to install chargers at their current locations and would be a new source of revenue that could bring profits for charger owners everywhere.

    • @SherrifOfNottingham
      @SherrifOfNottingham 6 років тому

      Ok so here's the issue with this "breakthrough"
      A majority of the public chargers are not fast chargers, the "level 3" and "level 4" charging is still rare compared to level 2 and even level 1 public chargers (though level 1 is getting phased out).
      So even if we introduced this mythical "level 5+" charging batteries, the actual chargers won't exist for it. The problem is the faster you're "blasting" power into the battery the more expensive the charging station will be to put in, and possibly to supply power to. In fact with current charging tech the battery in your phone is actually capable of being charged from dead to full in a couple minutes, but it's just not worth selling cables and chargers capable of such speeds.
      Yes the new battery technologies being talked about, like Solid States being 3x more dense and 10x faster charging, sound really great and will be a huge boon to electric vehicles. But actually charging a car with 100 kWh in 5 min will be a huge amount of electricity moving through a cable into the car. That's the piece of technology we're really waiting on, not batteries.

    • @bigadventure3797
      @bigadventure3797 6 років тому

      True, but I don't see this as an issue. That's why I think places like gas stations, and dealerships will be first to install these. You will need less chargers if persons can quickly charge up and go.

      It's a bad analogy especially with the wine glass visual. It's more like trying to pour water into dirt, when you first start pouring there's more places for the water to go so it absorbs into the dirt quickly, but when you get close to fully saturated the water just sits on top of the dirt slowly seeping into it chargers being extra careful not to put more charge than the battery can handle... Because that would lead to an explosion.

    I keep hearing everyone talking about L2 and supercharging being ubiquitous, like you can't turn around and take 3 steps without tripping over one or the other in your bathroom. While this MIGHT be SORT OF the case in SoCal and Silicon Valley, outside of the bubble that is definitely NOT the norm.Most folks looking at these things have AT LEAST a 25 mile trip to the nearest supercharger, and God only knows how far to the nearest non-proprietary. If I were to get an EV, I'd HAVE to get a Tesla, then hope it didn't lose too much juice overnight as we have one of our 18F nights and mornings, before driving SIXTY miles to Boise, and waiting AT LEAST 50 minutes for the car to charge up to 90%+ before driving 60 miles BACK and going to work. Otherwise, I'm on house current and losing more and more range every day, since it can't keep the pack charged AND run the battery management system full blast at the same time.Does this sound like a MINOR hurdle to EVs becoming mainstream?

      Eventually all cars will have inductive plats for wireless charging, and parking lots will have inductive plates installed in the parking spaces. Charging will likely become a freely available thing as the competition starts killing off the price gougers.
      The plug will always be a part of the car however, but in a future where inductive plates are available enough to bury under the ground at stop lights and give free power to people sitting in traffic, the plug is going to be easily accessible. If you can charge at home with off-peak rates, an EV is cheap to fuel. But once you have to pay $0.35/kWh in a car that goes 4 miles/kWh, your cost is about the same as a gasoline vehicle getting 36 MPG. And at. $1/kWh, most gas hogs are cheaper to fuel.
    And if you use model S/X 3 miles per kWh it’s even more expensive. But anyone who can afford that should be able to afford a nice place to live or the extra charging cost.
    The free chargers are like the local drug dealers, first taste is free, later when you are hooked you will need to pay $1/kWh. That free charger showing ads is going to be charging money once they get demonized. LOL

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 років тому +2

      Fortunately many people pay $0.05 per kWh off peak. Even if the price of electricity were the same as fossil fuel, the Carbon footprint of an EV can be much lower when the electricity comes from wind or solar. And the grid gets increasingly cleaner as more renewables are added. The same cannot be said of the fossil car which remains dirty.

    • @imho7250
      @imho7250 6 років тому

      Loanword Eggcorn, burning fossil fuel makes plant grow better. The same cannot be said about consuming green electricity. Ironic.
      But environmental issues aside, the majority of people who drive cars don’t care about making enough CO2 to keep the world green, they care about what will get them to work cheaper and more reliably, with less hassle. The tipping point will be reached when the majority of consumers can own and operate an EV for less than an equivalent ICE car, without the hassle of charging it being greater than the hassle of buying gas for their car.

    • @adrianpike4649
      @adrianpike4649 6 років тому

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn 6 років тому

      +IMHO I realize the topic of this video is public charging, but a large majority of existing EV drivers charge at home overnight. Plugging in at home is far easier and more convenient than the hassle of going to a gas station. Total cost of ownership for some EVs is already lower than fossil cars if several years of fuel costs are included. Total cost of ownership will continue to fall as battery costs fall. The curves will cross sooner and sooner.

    • @imho7250
      @imho7250 6 років тому

      Loanword Eggcorn, the first adopters mostly have homes. But this video is not about first adopters, it’s about what happens when the masses start to drive EVs. And that won’t happen until it’s more cost efficient and less hassle than driving their ICE vehicle.
      The EV is getting closer to being viable each year. It’s still not viable and won’t be until batteries get better and/or cheaper, or oil prices go through the roof (and I don’t think they will make that mistake again, that’s what let Tesla get it’s foot in the door in the first place.)
      Right now there are some pretty hefty incentives which basically offset the initial purchase price and knock a huge chunk of the massive depreciation off the shoulders of the first buyer. But the incentives run out and get cut back as more people adopt. We already see that in some countries and some states inside the US.
