    Excellent build and well thought out. I’m “ borrowing “ your fishing rod holder idea for a 1990’s MTB I’m converting to a touring, riding to the beach bike. In fact I’ve already mounted the rear rack snd have been deliberating as to the best method to mount my rod holder. Thanks for the tip.

    Nice build. Hey that’s the shock top seat post (not stem). You can try the shock stop stem - it adds a lot of comfort on rough surfaces, but I think the shortest is 80mm, so it may not work for you. Consider the spur cycle bell. IMHO it’s the most elegant one.

      Thanks! Bar tape was something i had sitting around. I ride to the office occasionally, but I'm rarely there. I did not. The M.S. is typically a 650b setup according to Surly, even though I think you can go 700x38 with fenders on it, but I'm 6'4" and this bike is setup for Rando rides more or less and I really like the 700x42 supple sidewalls

    I’m curious: Surley rates this frame for max 41mm clearance. How are you running 42mm with fenders? Other thing: I’m considering buying this stock setup for gravel/road towing my Burley trailer with my toddler daughter. Your the first vid I’ve seen to mention towing. Any concerns with towing off-road? I’m also switching from fixed to geared; once you get that child weight behind you, you definitely need some more gears under your foot lol.

    • @MulksBikes
      @MulksBikes  3 роки тому +2

      Man, this is right up my ally! So I've seen people run 47's on reddit. The 42's are barely wider than the 41's that come on the complete build. My 41mm Surly Knards actually measure wider than my 43mm Panaracer Gravel Kings when measured with a caliper. I don't like to push the limits, but 42mm is perfect for this frame & fenders. Also I really, really wanted the Teravail Ramparts 700x42. I pull a Thule Chariot Cross trailer with my bike. I had to swap the QR axle for a Bolt-on immediately or else you'll pull the wheel straight out of the drop-puts. I also swapped the 42t chainring out for an absoluteBlack 38t Oval Chainring, to give me a little bit lower gearing when cranking up those steep hills. It helped a lot and I haven't hit a hill yet where we can't get up it with little extra effort. As for off-road, I have only flipped the trailer over once. We were on some gravel in a river bank and crossed pavement lip at a diagonal. Luckily my daughter was strapped in tightly and I don't think she even knew anything happened. We always secure the straps tightly and make sure her helmet is snug. Also I bought an extra seat padding kit and that seems to make a big difference. We started out with a trailer we got as a gift and we didn't get too far down the road before my daughter started crying, I think it was due to discomfort. I was told to buy the most expensive bike trailer I could. Now we can go out all day and she has no complaints. It's water tight, has shock suspension, but Like you were mentioning, you'll notice that extra weight from time to time.

      @@MulksBikes Thanks so much for the info! Anecdotes like this are the most helpful. Glad to know this model can tow effectively with the right upgrades. I’ll probably end up doing the same. I was concerned it might be too “squirrely” with a trailer and kiddo on gravel, but sounds like you’ve put plenty of miles on it. I was also concerned that I might want bigger tires than this frame allows, but I suspect that around 41/42 will be enough. At some point bigger tires detract from the quality/enjoyment of the ride and also take away the accessibility to cross over into longer pavement rides. I 100% agree on the trailers: we also got an entry level trailer and returned it after one ride and a lot of crying. We upgraded to the Burley’s D’Lite X with all the padding and reclining seats, and it’s completely worth the money, just like I imagine that Thule is.

      @MulksBikes  3 роки тому +5

      @@8Ryanaugust absolutely! I love interactions like this, it's the reason I'm on UA-cam. If you suspect that you will EVER want bigger tires then you might look at the Surly bridge club or midnight special.

  • @TheTWhite

    Is the purpose of the dropouts being that direction for wheel repair while loaded or something? Seems odd that you could pedal and yank the wheel out of the dropouts before your modification with the bolt to stop it.

    • @MulksBikes
      @MulksBikes  Рік тому +1

      I'm not sure. They're just common road bike dropouts instead of track dropouts. Stomping on the pedals going uphill caused me to pull the axle forward and loose chain tension because I couldn't get the camlock on the axle tight enough with my hand. I'm also heavy and pull a 60lb trailer. I havent had the issue since switching the axle and adding the factory tension screws. The tension screws make for a pain in the butt if you have to change a tube or tire on the fly tho.

    I notice at 6:40 while showing youre dropouts that the Hub/Wheel is slammed to the back of the dropout. Are you noticing any lack of shift quality? As far is I know the Hub should be sitting at the front of the dropout when running a derailleur setup. That way the distance between derailleur and cassette is much closer and the whole geometry of the drivetrain looks way more "normal" to me. Im a bike mechanic, and proud owner of a Straggler myself. But finding the correct way of using those dropouts wasnt easy for sure.

      Thanks for watching!! I wish there was! I'd love to have a justifiable reason to swap the group set or change something, but it's been stellar since I got it. I've kept it in the same spot as how the shop built it originally, based on the paint marrings from the axle washers. Never had any issues with shifting, and haven't had any issues with axle retention since I added the set screws and changed out the axle. This bike has now exclusively become my rando bike - completed a good amount of long distance rides last season, including a 200k.
