So whats new about it and why are people turning off?
I’ll give you an example of a recent storyline on the modern day Corrie - the street developed a huge sink hole 🕳 and Roy Cropper was involved in an almost ‘disaster movie’ type scenario! They might as well have had Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson in it in Roy’s place - utterly ridiculous! Lol

He could be pretty annoying, but he was an improvement on that cantankerous old sod Albert Tatlock. I thought that he and Phyllis were welcome additions to the cast in the 1980s, and provided much needed relief from the awful Tilsley and Duckworth families, who played too large a role in the show, in my view.

I always remember these episodes when I was 12 years old. I remember asking my dad that he will never ever turn out violent like Alan Bradley and then he gave me a hug and said there's no need for me to be frightened of him. The actor, Mark Eden who played Alan Bradley used to have to give the actress a hug who played Rita and tell her he was only pretending. I'd have loved to meet Mark Eden and tell him how impressed I was with his acting.
I seem to remember the Police got a few phone calls during the famous Blackpool tram episode from people believing it was real life saying things like “he’s coming up the stairs to get Rita” etc 😂
Lol I can imagine that too! People take these things so seriously! I suppose it’s a testament to the brilliance of Mark Eden, he played evil so well.. shame they had to kill him off!
I remember prolific Street writer John Stevenson saying about the calls to the hotel on some Corrie programme, yeah. I guess when the writers devise storylines that blacken their character, the actors get it when they’re out and about. I think Phil Middlemiss got abuse as Des during the love triangle story with Raquel and Tanya. Of course the classic example is the actress who played Mrs. Mangel in Neighbours, Vivien Gray, forced to quit the role cos she got so much abuse from people unable to separate fact from fiction!
The Granada make up team did a great job with Rita’s realistic injuries didn’t they. She looks like a different person altogether in that first hospital bed scene, what a shock for Jenny. I remember Barbara appeared on Going Live answering questions about the storyline and said they used a special kind of wax to seal her eye shut like that.
Rita, brave and or dumb to confront Alan alone. On Jenny's 18th birthday too. Fantastic storyline though, very true to life, I think. As far as I am aware, Alan now owes Rita at least £22,000. Very well done Martin and Jenny for bothering to check Rita ok, they may have saved her life turning up when they did? Surprised no neighbours or passers by heard the commotion.. Alan looked to be trying to smoother and suffocate Rita . First time ever seen this, never had time before. Amazing make up job for Rita's injuries, hardly recognised her at first.
