The thing about polyphia/tim Henson is it’s like Mozart or Bach but without the harmonic and melodic development. It’s technically difficult but incredibly harmonically simple and so it just ends up being too repetitive for my taste. It just sounds like an arpeggio etude. I actually find this song great because of all of the many melodies that go on. You could hear all the notes and get overwhelmed, but I instead hear many melodies that will repeat and they are all perfect ear candy for me. It's the same reason I love all of Queen's catalogue, constantly changing and advancing melodies, I just can't get enough of it and very few artists do it.
Tim started in EDM. For people who listen to EDM, it’s mainly the drums that make it sound like there’s a ton going on. Melodically, lots of EDM sub-genres have a lot more going on. It’s just obviously less impressive because it’s not being played on an instrument.
4:29 and 5:09 I think with all the notes, and the fact that they are almost exclusively picked can lend the track to almost sounding like a Koto, at times.
Dude YES- first time I've seen someone echo how I feel about the nylon sound lol. I tried liking it for a long time, then eventually realized that yeah, no, I'm juuust not into it. Kinda like banjos- although banjos are quite a bit worse imo lol.
I think you guys would like Polyphia's earlier albums a lot more based on how you guys described your tastes (their songs James Franco and Champagne are bangers). I love this kind of music, but their new stuff I have to sit down and listen to since so much is happening at once. They're older stuff I can comfortably have in the background and still jam with.
Totally agree on the piezo on a nylon. But probably gets that sound because of them using picks and playing so aggressively. I saw Polyphia live and the sound was clear but almost so treble heavy that I couldn’t hear what the drums were doing between the main beats. I still enjoy the studio version but can see why it might sound better on electric for different ears
Based on what you said about liking a sort of melodic through-line, I think you *might* dig Ego Death. That song is just one big narrative piece using theme and variation. It sets up an initial theme that gives you something to latch onto and watch grow over time. Killer piece.
Personally I really love the note heavy kind of electric guitar instrumental music especially the neoclassical or very shred oriented stuff. Vinnie Moore, conquering dystopia, Gus G's solo project I can't get enough of that kind of stuff it has so much to digest there's so many different things to listen to which makes it highly replayable
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I will say ...I had heard them a few years back and I was... It's not bad and never listened again. Then last year listened again and now they are by far one of my favorite bands!! Keeping you hooked with a masterpiece of misdirection and then it starts again.
I'd be really interested in hearing you guys react to a song like cory wong by vulfpeck based on what you said where it is instrumental electric guitar however based on what you said you might enjoy it more because it does have a solid back bone and it's not overly solo or whatever.
My favorite band! I own 2 of Tims signature guitars the BB10 and the nylon even though I may never be able to play like them I had to have them! Also Tim + Marcin is astronomical!!!
"high-concept Nintendo music" indeed. I also have massive respect what they do, yet have never felt a need to buy an album or add their music to playlists for regular listening. :)
I agree with both guys on this. The amount of talent and technique from Polyphia makes most people insecure about their own playing, BUT these aren't really songs to me, they're more like movie compositions. I love the chords used, but I dislike the A.D.D. nature of the composition.
After hearing your opinions I think you would enjoy Chon more. Not sure how much you’ve heard of them but most of their catalogue is more digestible than Polyphia even though they are just as technically capable
Ngl, I think its kinda crazy that you managed to not listen to this in 2 years! I mean, I love polyphia, own the vinyls and have their music on repeat but I feel like it was kind of everywhere for a few weeks after the release!
the video game/nintendo music is hilarious... Because that portion of the song sounds alot like several different portions of music from the wii console.
That signature guitar is actually an Ibanez Sc500n millennium failure. I think it's funny that They brought it back for Tim. I haven't played in years. Turns out it's because my tone gets mashed up with Nashville tuning and drop b.
The first video I checked out by Tim Henson I could’ve sworn the video was periodically sped up but the guy is just incredible. I agree with the opinion it’s a type of music I wouldn’t sit down and listen to an entire body of work. There’s just too much going on, that’s purely on me and my brain’s limitations. I just need more spacing, it’s kinda like someone talking so fast it’s unintelligible, again just me. Incredible playing nonetheless, if I included a list of all the great guitarists I personally don’t care for, that list would be someone’s favorite guitarist list.

I think with all the notes, and the fact that they are almost exclusively picked can lend the track to almost sounding like a Koto, at times.
Tim Henson is my lesbian crush
❤Vinnie Moore. Saw him in the early 90s. Monstrous player, but highly melodic
I think you guys would Genesis from the same album it's a bit more chill.
Def not on my playlist , but they’re all incredibly talented .🎸👊🏼
I kinda agree with the video game background music. You got that right samurai
Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but I will say ...I had heard them a few years back and I was... It's not bad and never listened again. Then last year listened again and now they are by far one of my favorite bands!! Keeping you hooked with a masterpiece of misdirection and then it starts again.
High concept Nintendo music is spot on 😂
I'd be really interested in hearing you guys react to a song like cory wong by vulfpeck based on what you said where it is instrumental electric guitar however based on what you said you might enjoy it more because it does have a solid back bone and it's not overly solo or whatever.
Finally someone else that hears the Nintendo music link! I think of Zelda OOT during the slow melodic section.
Imma guitarist for 27 years and literally not my cup of tea, but u have to respect it..period
Yeah - Polyphia can be awkward. I'm curious what you think of Band-Maid's instrumental, From Now On. More palatable
Sammy G - I’m a Blues dad
Sean - I’m an indie sad girl
Checks out haha
Comparing Polyphia to Terrence Howard somehow feels appropriate 😂 it's new math baby! 🤣
"I feel like they like Steve Vai" their next hit was a collab with him 😂
"Sounds like Japanese music" there's an awesome Koto cover on UA-cam.
Ratatat is soooo good. I saw them in St. Louis years ago at a university and it was awesome.
Check out his ‘unplugged’ version. Guitar work is amazing.
Turns out it's because my tone gets mashed up with Nashville tuning and drop b.
hope to see you guys react to Band Maid. song titles like "from now on", "without holding back (instrumental)", & "onset". 😊😁
John Fahey to me is very listenable and engaging instrumental guitar music
So damn refreshing to see people not vibing with the music. I personally love this song but 95% of music I try I dislike.
you gotta listen to plini i suggest, electric sunrise, paper moon and, selenium forest.
You guys should watch the pain remains trilogy from Lorna shore. Epic heavy masterpiece
u should listen to chimera, it has both instrumentals and metal. they also have a song with chino moreno called bloodbath
Yea, Im mad I can't play like this too.
If you like playing videogames while listening Polyphia you can try the 8bit cover, it's Too Gud
It hits the adhd people with lots of interesting jumps and pays rewards….
ya'll need to check out Ego Death next. this band is crazy
Should watch the acoustic version
As a mantic programmer. I lol.. oh boy? Listen to this to calm my nerves.
They have a song with Steve Vai that's awesome called Ego Death you guys should react to
Maybe you are late on the train, but this is a good reaction. "I don't like but I understand." 👍
Have to call out the SYSK shirt. Nice!
If you like Ratatat check out "Nasty" by Polyphia.
Cover it on electric guitar please and post it❤ It would be a massive hit
They actually did a great song with Steve Vai. Ego Death
New viewer and that intro almost made me spit-take 💀
Some of it sounds like the music from the game Persona5
Just like a guy said to me in the motorcycle industry years ago. "There's an ass for every seat".
Honestly, I would prefer reacting/watching to Tim's cover of it, than the MV itself.
damn, son. so many hate comments. so many butthurt polyphia fans in the comment section 😂. they clearly said that Polyphia is extremely talented but not their taste. why are people so mad on others for having an opinion? 😮
Wow, a reaction video already? The song's only a year old
Try to react to Cueshé songs Back 2U, Now, BMD, Back To Me, Borrowed Time, Sky, Sorry, 24 Hours, There Was You. It's worth
they look so defeated in that thumbnail😊
Anyone who says they don’t know polyphia be capping 😂 there was a dude at a guitar shop helping me said idk who this Tim Henson guy is lol ok buddy
samurai : before we play the song I want to make it clear that I don't like it.
5:35 they have a song with Steve Vai, called Ego Death, maybe try listening to that?
They haven’t heard of Marcin 😂
Traumatized by nylon strings associated with elevator music, but he prefers the part that sounds the most like elevator music 😆
This has got to be the most bitter review I’ve seen hahah, at least it seems like it to me
Does the thing look like a classical guitar??
